It should be noted that part of the reason it took so long for Teemu Selänne to get to the NHL was the fact that he was required to serve in the Finnish military when he turned 18.
Yeah, it is not a good argument. Minimun service time is six months and they have a special ”sport troops” where all the athletes do their service. Everything is easier there, lot of vacations and everything is done sport and training first. Had a brother there, it is easy, I know. As maybe a weird musical comparison, Teemu Selanne's NHL career reminds me of that of The Cars: a Hall Of Fame run with a lot of great work done and accomplishments made along the way, but for better and for worse *nothing* will ever top their debut outing.
A big "What Could Have Been" with regards to Selanne that sticks in my Flames fan mind is that in the summer of 1992, since he hadn't signed a rookie contract yet, Teemu Selanne became a restricted free agent as per the rules of the time, and so the Calgary Flames, still stinging from the Doug Gilmour trade a half-season prior, signed him to an offer sheet: 3 years, $400k per year, $32k more than the league average back then and more than twice Winnipeg's offer. Obviously the Jets matched it and Selanne went on to have an incredible season and career; and so some of us are left to wonder how Selanne as a Flame would have panned out...
Didn't know about that Perry connection, wow. And thumbs up for mentioning that Niedermayer-Pahlsson-Moen line, these guys were truly incredible during the 07 run.
When you think about it, it's because of this trade that Anaheim has three numbers in its rafters right now. Obviously Teemu. But Rob Niedermayer is the reason Scott came to Anaheim, specifically to play with his brother for a few seasons, and he put up numbers for us in his time. But while Kariya had a great first season, Selanne (and Rooch) unlocked him and turned him from great into a HOFer. So yeah, thanks Winniphoenizona. If you need ideas for a trade tree: December 30, 1997 - Edmonton trades Bonsignore, Bryan Marchment and Steve Kelly to Tampa Bay in exchange for Roman Hamrlík and the rights to Paul Comrie This is how Vincent Lecavalier ended up in Tampa and how they won their first cup. It's also a pretty big trade tree.

What's even more amazing about Selanne's 76 goal season is that he still only was tied for the league lead. Mogilny also had 76 that season.

Any thoughts on doing a Mikael Renberg to Tampa trade?
Robert Reichel, we picked his nephew Lukasa few years ago and he should be ready as soon as this year. I am excited.
I'm hoping you have either done are are working on the Cam Neely to the Boston Bruins trade tree. I find that one fascinating
He had a broken knee since the last season with the anaheim, sj/col era was with a broken knee, got it fixed during the lockout and they got back the old goal scorer.
25:16 - Ok, I'll just ask about the Brett Hull (CGY to STL) trade tree instead. ;P
Oleg Tverdovsky was tagged as the "Russian" Bobby Orr. So no pressure there then. 🤔
If you need ideas for a trade tree:
December 30, 1997 - Edmonton trades Bonsignore, Bryan Marchment and Steve Kelly to Tampa Bay in exchange for Roman Hamrlík and the rights to Paul Comrie
This is how Vincent Lecavalier ended up in Tampa and how they won their first cup. It's also a pretty big trade tree.
Can you sum the games played, goals, points, awards totals of each side of these trees. Would be interesting to compare them
Have you ever done the Sedin Trade tree? Yes I'm thinking all the major players in the trade that got VAN the 2nd overall pick. So VAN, CHI, TBL and ATL. 2 real short branches and 2 longer ones
love the trade trees keep it up
Amazing vid! I'm a little sad you don't say the managers name, because the Ducks manager should get some love here. Just remarcable job. Also in one of your previous videos (year ago) flames trading a veteran to the Caps for picks eventually getting Kylington, Lindholm, Hanifin and three seasons of Hamilton. If that was Treliving, this guy is probably top 5 GM in the league, if you consider this years off-season magic......
Loved Freddy Sjostrom. Dude was so fast.
The fact that Paul Kariya wasn't on that 2007 Ducks team was criminal
Awesome video!
When can we expect a EK65 tree?
i was expecting the intro to be this is a trade essay or book
Huh, Steve says "Aki Berg" like Kings fans say "Aki Berg". Well done sir.
A curiously interesting (sorta) note on the Coyotes/ Flames trade involving Carney, Freddie Sjostrom played for the Calgary Hitmen of the WHL. Also, I'm a long time Flames fan and I dont remember Carney at all. I do remember Kobasew and Taratukhin. Disappointment all around
I miss hearing the music. It makes the video slightly more enjoyable to watch.
It’s still my favourite series of videos to watch though
Great Video
I thought Modano was an actor
Even though this isn't direct trade, the ducks acquired Scott Niedermayer because he want to play with his brother Rob.
Didn't even mention that bringing in Rob Neidermeyer brought them Scott Neidermeyer.
The Gilmore trade tree is also involves another trade tree that hurt the flames and it’s not the leafs deal. Also side note. It ended in 2020.
Interesting Oleg Tverdosky played for New Jersey against the Mighty Ducks in the 2003 Stanley cup finals
Even though kilger and tverdovsky were top 5 picks, the fact that this trade was 3 for 3 was insane. If this trade happened today it would have been selanne to Anaheim and 2 1st round picks, 2 top prospects, and 1 good roster player to Winnipeg
