  • Join Lukasz as he visits the RICOH 3L Building in Tokyo Japan, to meet Mr Inaba the designer for RICOH GR.
Mr Inaba shares his insight into some of the challenges that go into designing the RICOH GR. He explains the level of detail and intricate changes that enhance the GR as a powerful snapshot camera. Many of these features we may take for granted, or perhaps only notice subconsciously; but as Mr Inababa goes into detail, we can suddenly appreciate how these subtle changes can make a huge impact on our everyday shooting.

Build quality must be better in GR IV. And hopefully a solution to avoid dust on the sensor🥹
The Ricoh GR is otherwise a very refined camera and one of my all time favourites 🫂

Very interesting insights Inaba-sama and Lukasz domo arigatou!
I wished for a 50mm version and you fulfilled my dream (40mm is close enough) - Thank you so much!! My GRII and GRIIIx are my constant companions.
Now I have only one last wish for the GRIV, in order to be the 100% camera for me:
During daily use I noticed that I like the "wheel" (D-Pad) of the GRII more than the scroll wheel of the GRIII. Mainly because the scroll wheel is too thin, has a wonky feel and can be fiddly to use. I accidentally adjusted the exposure compensation a few times without noticing. The old wheel in combination with the +/- buttons has more haptical feedback and usability for me.
I would be glad if the GRII wheel celebrates a comeback. However, if you keep the new scroll wheel please broaden it and give the clicks more tactile feedback. Also an option to disable the scroll function would be nice.
Keep up the good work! :-)

Lukasz, what a great service to the GR community. This was a great interview and I sense that it brought all of us a little closer together as a GR family. Very interesting insight into the cameras that we love and use....and just a bit of a teaser at the end that was very encouraging....not a "do all" camera but one that push forward the GR "snap shooter" focus... (GR IV).... ? Thanks for all you have done, are doing now, and will do in the future, Inaba san! Please let Lukasz visit again in the future.

Interesting - thanks Lukasz and Mr. Inaba! I can totally appreciate everything that the Ricoh GR is (and is not). Great interview, I’m holding out until the gr4 comes out as it should be soon. I sold all my Fuji gear as I kind of need one handed operation now due to my condition. Hopefully the new camera comes with better screen resolution, better autofocus, better battery life and weather sealing (I keep reading issues with dust on the sensor but not really sure how true that is).
Man if they could incorporate a small zoom and still maintain f2.8 that would be something special. Fuji had the x10 a long time ago but unfortunately they dropped it after the x30 but there was really no need for the electronic view finder. There is something to be said about just holding the camera in front of you instead of raising it to your eye to be less conspicuous.

Interesting that Inaba started at the GR2 and not the (many) revisions before that. There really hasn't been much progress in design post the GRD IV (which in my humble opinion was the best digital version of the GR). In my opinion, I believe that going with an APS-C sensor was a mistake. As a street camera, the GR needs the deep depth of field, and this is where the old CCD design excels. If only Ricoh were to make another CCD GR, but with the speed that the newer GR3 has. Secondly, only guessing here, but my money is on the forthcoming GR IV being a new film camera, not digital?!

With that in mind, plus the fact that nothing official has been announced, you could consider how much use you would get out of a camera. We can also share the GR philosophy that camera models don't requently change models, or have features added just to keep up with trends. Whatever you decide, you can be confident with the capabilities of the GR 3 as a powerful everyday shooter that would not disappoint.

Good to hear that Ricoh is NOT listening to the people who want all sorts of changes to the GR cameras.
Of course it would be nice if the camera had an EVF, a foldable display, a larger battery, a zoom lens from 5mm to 1000mm with a continuous aperture of F1.0, a flash,...
But that is not possible if you want such a small camera!
If the GR became significantly larger, there would no longer be any reason to buy it!
Yes, the dust problem could get improved
And the autofocus. And maybe weather sealing.

I really hope they don't go with the one inch sensor. What really makes the GR3 great is it's sensor. I may have to spring for the X next if they decide to shrink the sensor; unless he misspoke ....

This camera is really a pocketable wonder, and the optics are superb. I've owned several GR cameras, presently I shoot a GR2 and GR3. The only changes I'd ask for would be a tilting screen for low-angle shots and getting rid of the video function. My longshot wish is for a wider max aperture lens, say f/2 or f/1.8.

    • @EYExplore

The #1 thing I'd love to see is an f/2 lens...wow that would take the GR to anther level. It would have two major synergies too: improved low-light AF, and less reliance on high ISO. :)

Ricoh please, make the font of the text at the bottom of screen adjustable, or, much better, when I change aperture setting can you enlarge the text on screen for aperture into large numbers, and then go normal again after 0.5 seconds.
Can you make shutter speed work this way too, so that when I make an adjustment, the adjusted parameter is overlayed in a large font , briefly

I suspect it was the need to keep the body small + crop sensor + image stabilisation, you can only fit so much into a small thing.

@@shubhmohansingh8159 I have no need of a flash permanently on the camera, that close to the lens it makes hard shadows. Size and IBIS matter to me as does a decent sensor. Otherwise buy a Sony, it has the tilting screen, flash and viefinder that I don’t care about and a little sensor that makes lovely images with great autofocus and a zoom!

GR never fully convinced me... bring GR4 with EVF, tilt LCD, WR (too many reports that lens takes dust) and I will consider it. I like 40mm lens in GR IIIx but why not f/2 instead of f/2.8? - front lens element is tiny compared to housing size. And make 16mm + 50mm WA and Tele attachable lenses and you have a hit,

Like he said Ricoh will never be a “does everything” camera and that’s fine. I don’t need 4K video etc. just want the larger sensor.
The griii is honestly too small for my hands. Making it larger will help with other people whose grip is bigger. And it will def. Still fit in a pocket.
Sony a7c and sigma fp are so close but without a retractable lens Ricoh is the only one who can make it the smallest. I have faith! 🤞😮
