RICOH GRIII - A project that changed my life

- This idea came to me in the closing days of December 2021, a project that would last the entire year. The concept was to create a body of work that each image seemingly on their own would hold no connection but combined became a layer in a year of my life almost like a slice through a 52 layered cake revealing the strata of life within.
I picked Tuesday as I often find Monday a chore and would I see it through on a Monday...
Thinking back, in late 2021 I had no idea the significance of this choice and the journey it would take me on.

Wow. I found this video and I expected that it would be some kind of a review or POV or some impressions of GRIII. But this video turned out to be unexpectedly deep, meaningful and philosophical. Great job, wish you the best on this life trip.

100% my experience too. The 28mm eq. of the Fujifilm X70 was too wide for me until something clicked. I was in a very disgusting town and wanted to capture all the filth I could in one photo - suddenly I was composing clutter, and soon clutter became context. Busy frames grew on me and when I had the choice to buy into the Ricoh GR III or the X, I chose the classic III.
Now I don't think I could go back.

Wonderful project. Thanks for sharing this with us. Loved the photos. I created a photo book of my photographic journey for the year of 2022. What is a little different about my life is that I hardly travel. In fact I didn't go further than 1 hours drive from my home all year. Like you I made the book primarily for myself I go could enjoy my photographic journey without having to look at the images on the book. In terms of technical restraints, I shot 95% of the images with a 50 mm lens. Thanks again for sharing, I am a big believer in projects and photo books for going deeper into one's photography. By the way I grew up in Cheshire not far from you, live in the USA now, so I appreciated the taste of England through your images.

Absolutely amazing video, and story! Thank you for sharing. I went to uni in Nottingham 2014-2017, and now live in NYC, so watching your walks around Nottingham are particularly nostalgic. My wife and I are currently in a transition moving away from NYC, and even though I’m ready for the change and I’m the one pushing for it, the feeling of not being able to go on my usual photo walks here hits me every now and then. I have a couple more months in NYC, and your video has inspired me to make my own book documenting our last summer in the city. Thank you, thank you, and thank you.

What a beautiful project and share with this video essay. It was a wonderful 12 minutes spent listening to your story and the concept of the project, and how it evolved as you entered and progressed through the process. The way you shared your story, your editing, your pacing, how you inserted your narrative breaks, allowed me to just take in your story at such a calm and reflective pace.
If you were to make the book available, I would certainly buy it. It would sit on my shelf as a reminder that developing a concept and sticking with it, while allowing yourself to discover and evolve can lead to new ways of seeing, and that, would be invaluable. Thanks again. 🙏

I rarely ever care about Black and white photos, nor would I usually watch a whole video involving only bnw photo content, but this video is what photography is about. Creating meaning through documentation and taking notice of things your eye maybe wouldn't appreciate if your hand wasn't holding a camera. This project is very inspirational and you now have an extra "like" and an extra subscriber because of it. Looking forward to more of your work!

Man, the photos look amazing and the project itself is really great and inspiring. But I need to say something about the blank page day. I think to include that was the most interesting thing (and I really loved all the rest), not only because it's such an example of creativity and thinking outside the box, but because it takes balls to do something this... strange. Sometimes the simplest thing is the hardest, that's something I probably would not have the courage to do and probably would have surrendered to the feeling of "I need to shoot something" and would have ended up putting a picture I'd not be proud of. Congratulations on that, it was really inspiring.

What a beautiful video. On top of all the things you mentioned about the journey you went on, you also captured Nottingham really well. It’s hustle and business but also it’s quiet calmness there is on certain days. I havnt lived in Nottingham for 3 years now, it has quite a dark spot in my head because of my mental health due to a job I was working at the time, but this video may have just started to turn it around and make me think of the positives that are there. Thank you 🖤

Yes! this is really what i love... i much prefer thinking about how we all make work and what the story says than specs and gear, gear ,gear.... but don't get me wrong i love gear and the cameras i think there is just interesting ways to weave that into my work

This is wild... you want to know something crazy... your video "Fujifilm XT3 - Picture Profile and skintone Test with my favorite profile" is the reason I bought my XT3 and started taking my street photography seriously!
I bought it to shoot video... and then just fell in love with how it captured
photos and then the journey went from there!

Thanks for posting this, I must say that I really enjoyed looking at your photography. Your images have a lot of contrast and blacks in them, I was wondering how you metered your beautiful photos? Thanks again.
Cheers Steve... erm most of it was just setting the camera manually scene to scene but at times i did use the GRIII's spot metering mode when i was playing with strong light and dark

I’ve noticed if you hold the camera with two hands in front of your chest, look at the LCD screen as you talk out loud, people assume you are shooting a video or live-streaming and they don’t realise you are taking there photo. I know this sounds daft but I spent hours in Newcastle with nobody asking what I was doing.

I've been doing something similar with my GRIII's high-contrast B&W mode, but perhaps a little less structured than your project. Really enjoyed your film and the photos were terrific
