Yes. It’s what prevents me buying a GR. I don’t own one, I really want one but there’s no way I’m dropping several hundred £££ on a camera that will suck in dust the way I use and abuse my gear.
🤣🤣What are y'all doing to your cameras?? I bought this camera 2 years ago to take on my daily rides, no dust. I just keep it in a small pouch in my jersey pocket.
I had the same issue with the wheel but took someone’s advice: spin the wheel clockwise for 2 minutes, then anticlockwise for 2 minutes. It did the trick for me
I don't have a GR yet, but I guess the GR IV would change that, since I'm waiting for better AF and dust sealing. But this release just shows Ricoh is like any other company trying to milk there cash cow regarding the demand on the GR cameras - nothing wrong about that, I would do the same. But in my opinion they could have easily released an HDF version for the GR IV line up and sell the new feature over the new line up. Just my 2 cents about this release :)

It is genuinely cool that Ricoh has built a mist filter into this camera, but this announcement is mostly just a reminder that Ricoh has continued to drop the ball on releasing a GR with modern autofocus and better weather sealing. This is a golden moment for pocketable, high-quality, user-friendly cameras, and Ricoh is leaving so much on the table by failing to release a GR camera with those basic quality-of-life features. Other wishlist items that feel like reasonable asks: an add-on hotshoe EVF (like the Leica EVF3), sturdier buttons, and a locking exposure comp dial. Let's get rid of video capabilities altogether - nobody is buying a GR for that - and lean into photo-centric upgrades. Pie-in-the-sky magic engineering wishlist items would be a faster lens, bringing back the flash, longer battery life, and a tilting screen. Ricoh should provide a compelling solution for people with X100 money who want something close to its photo specs that they can actually fit into a pocket. Small, simple, sturdy, sold.

Good job Sam! You kept a good balance btw ambassador promotion and personal honesty, especially with the jazz song! I think many people may actually be using the ND filter without realizing it. My GR III Street Edition (purchased 13 days ago) came with the ND filter set to “Auto” be default.
Had my GR3 for 4 years now. First critical failure was less than a year in when the lens couldn't retract back into the body. Then the wheel obviously stopped doing it's only job like almost all GRs. Last week while shooting it died on me while the LED light blinked green repeatedly. Then it overheated. Now I can turn it on or charge it. Just sent in for diagnosis and hoping for the best. Not really feeling great with Ricoh at the moment and then saw this launch like 😑😑😑😑😑😑😑
I bought the Ricoh GRIIIx for its 40mm equivalent lens. I got the HDF version so it would sell better when I would sell again. I now took a few shots with HDF on and seeing your video, I am convinced it was the right choice. I hardly ever used the ND filter on my X100/X100T back in the day. PS this buddy is going to stay next to my Leica Q. Thanks for this great video!
As someone who does not have a GR at all (played with them now and then), this model is enticing...but I also know that Ricoh might drop a GRIV within the next 12 months and that kind of gives me trepidation to purchase this camera. I really do not like selling cameras (it's just a big pain) and I prefer to hold onto a camera for multiple years and use it daily; so buying this lets say a month from not and then selling it for a GR4 at the end of the year would be so annoying. I can feel Ricoh will provide a lot of smart updates to the GR IV that I would really love and appreciate. The potential of a better sensor, better sealing, better battery life, bringing back the flash, better AF, better build quality, refining the UI, feel & ergonomics and so on are all on the table and things I care about. This model is fun but it is difficult to want to invest in it so far in the GRIII life cycle.
I find the "fight" of GR vs X100 Fuji laughable simply because to me both are outstanding cameras offering particular focus on different things. While they can overlap in a great JPEG engine, it boils down to which lens you like more focal length wise and of course the size.
@@joyouslandSuposedly the GR3 and 3X have a very weak IR cut filter and you can already just slap a R72 on it to do IR photography without any other modification. No hot spot issues. Also, it would be possible to adjust the AF by an offset for the wavelegth of IR light, no?
@@dan-le-brun IR hot spot does exist. Have tried it myself on gxr 50mm a12 module. The point is Ricoh is to lazy to do that as a toothpaste factory. With no real progress
I own the GRIII and GRIIIx. Makes no much sense as you can get an adapter for the GRiii and put any filter that there is. An ND is much more useful IMO as a permanent filter. You can also mimic mist effect in Lightroom by sliding the clarity to the left, a bit less of dehaze and play with the whites and exposure. And you can isolate the areas affected with the brush mask tool. A total money grab in my opinion rather a try new camera with better battery and useful video specs. As the GRIII models are near perfect!
Ricoh is far more likely to remove video functionality from the GR completely than enhance the video specs, akin to Hasselblad and Leica removing them from the X series and the M series cameras respectively after just one generation of including it. It would be keen for Ricoh to realize the GR's strengths and its userbase are snapshooters and street photographers who don't give a damn about using the camera for video whatsoever, and the people who do are an extreme minority. I'd rather them remove the video functionality, get rid of the mic & speaker holes on the camera to improve sealing and solidity. If I wanted a video camera I'd get a Sony or whatever. If you want a compact video camera, there's many many companies that get that job done and know far more about that space than Ricoh does. Even the iPhone 15 Pro's video quality runs circles around the GRIII's, even though the iPhone has a smaller sensor and plastic lens.
I've been using the Glimmer Glass on my X100 cameras ever since GxAce recommended them over the Black Pro-Mist. It's an expensive little filter but it really does elevate your pictures with regards to creating a filmic look. For B&W photography they're incredible. I've got far too many Fuji cameras so I'll definitely be selling one (or two) to get my hands on the HDF. The thought of having a truly pocketable camera just makes so much sense. With the X100 series I've had to buy specific coats with larger pockets to fit them into my 'Streetlife'. Don't know why I've held off so long.
Yeah idk man, this kind of sucks. If they want to make this a UVP they should’ve brought it with the IV. Not that it’s a bokeh monster, but I imagine the lack of ND is going to mess with bokeh quality at high shutter speeds. Feels like a cash grab on refreshing really old hardware at this point.
I would definitely call the Street and Diary editions cash grabs because they offer no added benefit. At least this version adds a physical feature that's new. Just my 2 cents.
It wouldn't matter if it did anyway. you wouldn't be able to buy it. Every single shop in Japan has discontinued orders for the GRIII because they can't get stock. It's impossible to buy.
@@marcust123 I don’t know? But I’m just telling you it’s completely out of stock throughout Japan with no ability to order it. I don’t know what the plan is here either.
@@zoeherriot yh seems very odd mate ive got the new fuji x100vi now like most others who were tired of waiting and disappointed with this crap release you would of thought they like to keep customers and gain new ones but seems not with ricoh
I always appreciate your content, but as a GR ambassador its a shame we cant hear your completely unaltered opinion, given how honest you were about the disappointment of the X100VI. This is a disappointment for those waiting for a new GR IV.
You need to know that I heard about this model last year December. I went through all the stages of frustration everyone is going through right now :D I am way less emotional about it today. That's why I am neither "yeay" nor "boo" about this release. I honestly had fun with it and was challenged to think differently when taking pictures. For me this provided a new experience which I treasure more than spec upgrades.
@@SamuelStreetlife I'm sure that's true, but then why not wait to make a X100VI video until after you've gone through all the stages of frustration...?
@@SamuelStreetlife I wasn’t sold on the new filter until you explained it to me. I’m not a professional but I have wanted a filter for the same purposes you went over in the video. I guess I can sell my Gr3x and grab the new one. Thanks for all the great videos
@@alhOOO2O Because I don't want to spend 3 month with a camera that I know I won't use beyond that. There was also no new feature worthy of trying out for any longer time with the X100VI. What you see is what you get basically. The 1,5 weeks I had the Fuji were enough for me to make a final conclusion about it. With the HDF GR the frustration came with the fact that it wasn't a GR IV. The X100VI IS the successor of the X100V so it should have been a more inspiring upgrade but it wasn't. The GR HDF wants to offer a new look tot he images which actually makes me shoot differently. And it was a matter of saying yes or no to Ricoh when they asked me if I want to shoot a series of images for them for the launch and make a video about it. And curiosity won at the end. The X100Vi I had to order myself just to be able to try it out. So I wouldn't compare the two experiences.
I ordered a black mist filter for my gr3x literally a day before ricoh announced the hdf version. As an upgrade it does not make sense but it is a nice addition to the product range. Choosing today I would definitely go for hdf instead of the nd filter one, it is pretty cool to have the filter built in
I guess that GR 4 rumor was just a rumor, eh? This looks awesome though! Kinda bummed that the ND filter is taken out since I love long exposure photography at night.
That song spoke to my GR-loving soul, Samuel... In a spooky way! I agree with you about the GRIV, I don't really see anything lacking in my IIIx. It's not like it's outdated. There's nothing glaringly absent. Would a few other features be nice? Yes, but... I think we're up against physics, and everything I could want: more resolution, environmental sealing, faster autofocus, the return of the flash, maybe even an EVF, battery life, these all require more power and generate more heat. And heat can already be a problem with this tiny camera. So I think in order to really get the major changes we want, there need to be significant technological advances in power consumption and/or battery tech, and Ricoh doesn't control any of those things.
I agree with your last statement! However, Ricoh really get on my nerves with their constant teasers that make everyone speculate something big is about to come out and then just release a minor new version that no one really wants/needs. Or even worse, a silly video, like the "boxing day special". It's particularly annoying just after announcing "supply chain issues" for the standard models. So now only the 100 Euro more expensive silly filter version is available in the shops. If I was a cynic ...
Great video but iono - SMH - all we wanted was sealing and a flash added on... tack on $300USD for the sealing maybe 7-8mm in thickness to add the flash with the IBIS and we're all good with it. Maybe more MP for cropping with better low light control BSI sensor?
thats what i was hoping, release a slightly bulkier gr along the classic one: weather sealing, ibis, ND, flash. i guess at that point people will tell me to get the fuji x100 though. but i like ricoh colors (bring back gr ii positive film while were at it)
The HDF filter is really a brilliant ideea. And the images are looking amazing - really film like. And they seem to look a little better than a diffusion filter. And having the chance to change this with the push of a button it's really great. Much more simpler than external filters.
Although the new HDF version looks very good. 😀 But for me, I still prefer the version with built-in ND filter version. I wish I could buy both if I could.😁
Respect for making an enjoyable and good video that's almost 20 minutes long about that camera. Well done and Shows your skills and persona :) next time your caretaker can either be more participating or just...step to the side.
"So now that the sun has come out" = "So now that I am in sunny Cologne" lol. PS: Really liking this new version, will be the perfect excuse to get a GRIIIx HDF to complement my GRIII!
Love your videos, ultra helpful every time 🤓😎😎😎 also… I just got the regular GRIII and felt so down that the mist filter I bought is in there cause I also want a lens hood but I think I still like the control of how strong it it. they should really include strength options and it would be epic so we can all just get the glass squarehood and nothing else, no adapter.
Just bought the Ricoh Diary edition not gonna send it back for the HDF model. Though it is tempting. I like the color scheme of the diary edition more and already am 400 shots in after three days. This camera makes me want to shoot. Perhaps in time there will be a griiix hdf to replace the Fujifilm X-A10 with tt artisan 27mm f2.8 (my cheapo grx 😂). Perhaps you can review that combo also 😄
Hi I really enjoyed your video! so inspiring! I have one quick question. Since you've been using the HDF models for about 4 months, which model (between GR III/GR IIIx) do you think is more suitable or easier to use the HDF filter? just curious and want to know your opinion. thanks!
Think I may pick one up when it’s available. I don’t have my GRIII anymore and been missing it. Since I don’t really ever use the ND filter, the HDF filter may be a great compliment to my 35mm which I shoot for 90% of my work. The GR lens is overly sharp at times and having the option to diffuse it in camera would be nice
Oh! it's not so bad. You can turn it on and off. If it's too much or you lose the taste for that 1970s vaseline softcore romantic music video look, you can go back to a clear image. I'm one of the people who doesn't care about a GRIV. I'm happy with my III and the firmware updates we get. The only reason I would upgrade at all is if the AF is worryingly good, like Sony's military grade terminator AF - or we get a nice flip up screen so I don't need to bend over or get on the dirty floor so much. 😂 It would be nice if they made an official GR mini flash for the hot shoe mount and maybe and official detachable EVF for those people who want one. Just some side projects, but I don't need a new GRIV or anything any time soon. Unrelated, but I would love if you tried a photo walk with the GRIIIX and teleconverter, to get some interesting reach. ✨
thanks for the review, this kind of minor change did not move me. I'll wait until the GR4 anyway. BTW where to buy the neck strap for the GR3 you're using?
well, I do that with photoshop with the same result (duplicate layer, blur effect, screen layer mode). I also have the filter for my main camera (fuji gfx) but for me is more convenient to do it with photoshop.
I must have the only GR's that don't have issues,:) had the Gr1 no dust problems and nothing broke, sold it and bought the GR3 love it also no problems over the years, they aren't mollycoddled just in the pocket or thrown in a bag. certainly wouldn't by the HR just for a filter effect though. Cheers
everyone: "Ricoh, we LOVE you! We, as photographers, know our friends would be buying you like crazy if you just made a few minor changes. Please make it more durable. Make it dust and waterproof. Make it slightly larger, not much so it retains its compact form, but enough so it fits in our larger hands easier, COMPETE with fuji and Olympus. Make sure the DPad dial isn't slipping after just weeks of use. Basically make it durable. Nothing has changed in 5 years" Ricoh (in Ralph Wiggum's voice): "I made a filter!"
I've been using a black pro-mist diffusion filter on my Ricoh GIIIx for awhile - for night street photography - and have been in love with it, so I guess I'm going to have to get an HDF model now. But I do feel like night photography with street an other artificial light sources in the scene are where it produces the most dramatic results. Daylight? Not so much.
For anyone that would like to see more photos in black & white, Sarah Simon shared some on IG. She’s a Ricoh ambassador, as well. I think the update works well for B&W work but idk about color photography.
So according to Ricoh if you are fan of Gr series you must love film looks right? Then here you have what you deserve. Now your photos will look even more film like 🥳🎉🎊

Don’t like it? Don’t buy it! It’s prob not for you but I like it so just might buy it. And I’ve had the gr1s until it broke. I had the griii and sold it but regretted. I like this look for bw shots and at night. And from I hear you can turn it off? So if you already have a griii or ii then ok! I feel like people getting on a hate train can be looked at people on a hype train (diffusion) so kudos to Ricoh for adding this since we could also complain about ND filters being trendy? No, I won’t because I appreciate all of it.
Hi Samuel. Watch your channel in a long time and you made me come with Ricoh. I purchased both GR III and GR IIIx HDF version. But I cannot connect these cameras with my iPhone using Image Sync app. This is the new version and the app need an upgrade? Or I did anything wrong? Can you connect it with your phone? Please help me.
I think Ricoh hasn't updated the app yet. My HDF models also don't work with the app. My other GR's work flawlessly. Your regular GR III should work. For me it works best with WiFi. Then connect to the GR in my phones WiFi settings and in the image sync app I select GR III and then follow the steps. Sometimes if it doesn't work I restart the app and then often it works. Hope this helps!

I think the real issue is that everyone was expecting a GRIV. To me personally, I don't mind the GRIV is the same sensor/resolution of previous but I really would love if they could improve the sensitive for AF in lower light and AF speed. They got AF accuracy when it focus, so that's good at least. Also if they can finally seal the camera so no dust problems. @Samuel- thans for the video. Also I thought you were living in the middle of a forest without access to civilization anymore, so a bit surprised to see you shooting on streets :-)
Probably hard to do with the sensor size. The Sony ZV-1 has an equiv 24-70 f2-2.8 and the Canon G7 has an equiv 24-100 f1.8-2.8. They are both 1 inch sensors.

With the X100 series I've had to buy specific coats with larger pockets to fit them into my 'Streetlife'. Don't know why I've held off so long.
man, the ability to set custom WB is a big game changer :)
Ich mag es echt! Mutig von Ricoh und Mega cooler Effekt!
Rewatching this vid and just noticed my work in it! Pleasure to be in that chart. ❤
Some really beautiful shots mate! very nice. I wouldn't mind a GRIIIxHF to complement my GRIII.
I suppose this means the GR4 isn't coming out this year, eh?
Very dissapointing
It wouldn't matter if it did anyway. you wouldn't be able to buy it. Every single shop in Japan has discontinued orders for the GRIII because they can't get stock. It's impossible to buy.
@@zoeherriot so whats the point in them making it and selling it lol
@@marcust123 I don’t know? But I’m just telling you it’s completely out of stock throughout Japan with no ability to order it. I don’t know what the plan is here either.
@@zoeherriot yh seems very odd mate ive got the new fuji x100vi now like most others who were tired of waiting and disappointed with this crap release you would of thought they like to keep customers and gain new ones but seems not with ricoh
I wish I could “like” this twice.
If I didn’t already own the IIIx, I’d get the HDF version. If I ever buy the III, I’ll get the HDF version.
@@mrnieblas1 Glad to hear you are getting something out of my video(s)! Cheers
April 1st is on Monday
I ordered a black mist filter for my gr3x literally a day before ricoh announced the hdf version. As an upgrade it does not make sense but it is a nice addition to the product range. Choosing today I would definitely go for hdf instead of the nd filter one, it is pretty cool to have the filter built in
YES, WE WANT MONOCHROME. Im holding out for that. In the meantime I'm all about my GRD1.
I think the built-in Mist filter is a good idea. I would love also to have the built-in ND-filter.
Yea having both would be very very nice
I'm waiting for the Star Filter edition. I like stars.
wow you are official ambassador of Richo GR iii hdf nice
Very nice! Are the videos also filmed with the Ricoh GRiii?
Totally understand this for snap shooters in Japan, especially in cities. Perfect.
I do wish they went straight into this model instead of the dairy.
The “cinestill” button lol
The effect is too strong imo, id rather just get the filter kit and choose my own level of diffusion.
The GenAI music and lyrics about GR is great! lol The GRIIIx HDF looks like a nice partner for my GRIII Street....
But for me, I still prefer the version with built-in ND filter version.
I wish I could buy both if I could.😁
Is the song AI or created for the video?
Respect for making an enjoyable and good video that's almost 20 minutes long about that camera. Well done and Shows your skills and persona :) next time your caretaker can either be more participating or just...step to the side.
the song is sick!
great video sam. you outdid yourself with the ricoh theme song. hahaha.
"So now that the sun has come out" = "So now that I am in sunny Cologne" lol.
PS: Really liking this new version, will be the perfect excuse to get a GRIIIx HDF to complement my GRIII!
Finally someone was thinking of it...
Excellent presentation and thoughts. Thank you!
Adding the mist filte5is an amazing idea!... but loosing the ND filter that is a bummer. Especially for sunny days!
Since you've been using the HDF models for about 4 months, which model (between GR III/GR IIIx) do you think is more suitable or easier to use the HDF filter? just curious and want to know your opinion. thanks!
Saw this new GR version advertised today on Insta and confused me about how it might be useful.
gr 4.... GRnooooo! still sure i'll try one, sounds like it'd be fun to use
Looking forward to Monday. 😈🤣
Better AF? Improved image quality? Improved dust resistance? Inbuilt flash? Tilt screen? Upgraded battery? No?
Can I rent one of your GR to see if I like them😂 you just kept adding more and more to the stack!
Oh! it's not so bad.
It would be nice if they made an official GR mini flash for the hot shoe mount and maybe and official detachable EVF for those people who want one.
I think GR3 or 3x are prefect and just right for what it make for
well, I do that with photoshop with the same result (duplicate layer, blur effect, screen layer mode).
Nothing has changed in 5 years"
Ricoh (in Ralph Wiggum's voice): "I made a filter!"
Love that GR song XD Did you made it with Suno AI?
I've been using a black pro-mist diffusion filter on my Ricoh GIIIx for awhile - for night street photography - and have been in love with it, so I guess I'm going to have to get an HDF model now. But I do feel like night photography with street an other artificial light sources in the scene are where it produces the most dramatic results. Daylight? Not so much.
Hey, Samuel. Are you still using the X-S20 for your main video cam? I’m really torn between getting and xt4 or the xs20. Cheers man!
by replacing the ND?
Monochrome gr would be amazing🤩🤩🤩
For anyone that would like to see more photos in black & white, Sarah Simon shared some on IG. She’s a Ricoh ambassador, as well. I think the update works well for B&W work but idk about color photography.
Many Thanks for the effort!!! Learn alot from your sharing. Thank you very much.
So according to Ricoh if you are fan of Gr series you must love film looks right? Then here you have what you deserve. Now your photos will look even more film like 🥳🎉🎊
7:10 I want to see alll the outtakes where the Ricoh Minder behind you gave you electric shocks for saying the wrong thing :)
*People " Please give us weather sealing and a small flash and better battery life"
Ricoh " Nah, you need a Diffusion filter, bruh"
People " But please weather sealing at the least"
Ricoh " I SAID a DAM FILTER!!"*
I need the Ricoh song on all streaming platforms right neow
Thanks. I use 1/4 and 1/8 diffusion filters and think this pieces of glass level up my photography. How do you describe the strength of HDF feature - 125?
My favorite GR3 feature is the sensordust.
Have you try the Ricoh R10 or any Ricoh’s digicam? 😅
Your Jazz song@13:20 is so creative and funny hahahaha🤣!!! Thanks Samuel for the great content, entertaining and informative. You have one more subscriber!
haha thank you!! Welcome then :-)
not bad!! great video man
I’m pretty new to the whole photography thing. What are you losing when opting for this HDF model over the standard with ND filter?
Hey Ricoh where’s my GR Mono that I wished for last Christmas? 🎄
Fr we want mono 😭
Man i loved the GRiii but that damn wheel dial kept getting messed up!!! 3rd time it happed i just gave up
Did you had any problems with dust ? I just ordered a Ricoh grii x for me
I ve seen some videos here with the advice to put stickers or duck tape on the little holes for microphone in and output to avoid dust coming into the lens(camera) is that true is it really helpful?. I mean I don’t want to use my Ricoh for filming but it will look ugly 😅
@@SamuelStreetlife Thank you so much for your help. First time I'm using Ricoh here. I don't have any regular GR. I hope they will update the app soon. I was testing Ricoh in last some days and really love the images than Fuji. Again, thank you so much!!
@@streetphotoz I just heard that the new firmware update for all GR III's is coming tomorrow! Hopefully this also means the app gets an update. We will see.
@@SamuelStreetlife Oh really? Very nice to hear that. Hope with this updates we can use the app the new HDF cameras. Also do you think I should add JJC filter to the lens? I still want it small compact but I'm scare about dust.
It's all fine, but we need a new 35mm analog GR version with modern AF please dear Lord!!!
I wonder what this means for the GR IV release date
This camera should have come out before last Christmas, given what you've shown with your examples here.
HDF high definition fun!
hdf ist often used in German for "Halt die Fresse" - Shut your mouth 😂
What does the camera capture if Raw & J Peg are selected…..AND HDF?
Is compact glass a technical challenge? I would love a variable zoom on the Ricoh
Probably hard to do with the sensor size. The Sony ZV-1 has an equiv 24-70 f2-2.8 and the Canon G7 has an equiv 24-100 f1.8-2.8. They are both 1 inch sensors.
Looks like Ricoh doing much better then it seems from my silly perspective. May be I am too old
Next up - GRiiix HDF diary version😂 i love GR but come on this is due for a refresh for a long time
