    The GR is the only camera I carry when I do not want to carry a camera. I have it with me all day long, does not weigh me down even if i wear summer shorts and a shirt, does not make me feel frustrated if I end up not taking any pic. But when I do feel inspired and shoot, the quality it provides is very substantially better than the phone I also carry and infinitely better than any camera I left at home because it is annoying, stressful, sometimes painful to carry a camera strapped across the shoulder or stored in an even heavier bag encumbering you all day long. Despite everyone's wishful thinking the X100 does not slide comfortably into any normal day-to-day pocket: you either carry it with a strap, or in a bag or feel the thing weighing down your big raincoat pocket, ready to fall out at any moment. In that sense the X100 is mostly the same as any other camera. That is something a RUclips video cannot convey, as the youtuber himself is saddled with all sorts of additional gear (mic, gopro, etc) and has to take pictures to justify the outing. Fun video though and nice views of Bath. Thanks for that!

    • @po.ntandshoot
      @po.ntandshoot  6 месяцев назад +2

      Key attribute; the Ricoh's size / form factor is a phenomenon.
      The X100VI was actually smaller than I was expecting (only used the X-Pro and XE series to this point), and the fact it's still cold, my sturdy jacket pockets can carry it easily. Come summer, I may feel a different way -

    • @gainde1137
      @gainde1137 6 месяцев назад +2

      Yes, the Ricoh is a compact camera and good alternative to a smartphone. The Fuji X100VI is like a entry level DSLM camera (e.g. Canon R50) and not as handy as a compact camera/phone.

    • @bizpixvegas7651
      @bizpixvegas7651 5 месяцев назад +3

      I agree with your assessment 100%. I have shot with previous models of the X100 (not VI) and did not like the experience. I had a chance to shoot with the GRIIIX a few weeks ago. The sharpness of the lens and the image quality especially the colors just blew me away. GR is the true street camera. The downside, short battery life.

  • @adamdrakestudio
    @adamdrakestudio 6 месяцев назад +13

    Now i know how you get away with the shooting. The subtle chuckle when they realise what's going on. Got confronted taking photos of some bins at the back of a restaurant today. Anyway, I've had both (the GRIII and IIIx and now have the X100VI), I am still in love with the sharpness and detail of the Ricoh as well as its stealth but am enjoying the Fuji recipes and the viewfinder. Plus less worry on weather sealing since I live in rainy, windy, sandy Cornwall. It's a toss up.

      @@po.ntandshootso I thought through my main use and it’s trips to cities like London, Lisbon, Madrid etc. so I’ve decided to keep it. What is the most important thing in a fixed lens camera? The lens I have shot with the Fujifilm x100 and x100v, Ricoh GR3 series and Leica Q. I do find that the Leica Q Series has by far the best lens, followed by the Ricoh GR3 series. Handsdown I would advise anybody to wait for the XE5/XT50 and pair it with the 27mm II :)

    • @po.ntandshoot

      I loved the X-E3 when I was travelling pre-covid - I didn't notice a huge difference when I upgraded to the X-Pro3. X-E5 will surely only come out once the X100VI orders are fulfilled, given they sit in the same space.
      It's only a matter of time before I test a Q and proceed to fall in love with it...

      @brianwarnerarts 6 месяцев назад

      @@GlindaQuadlinghater comment. Most who shot film never had weather sealing. Few people report dust issues with ricoh, some do. But it feels so overblown. I see videos of guys shooting with it for years with no issues. My Nikon p900 has no weather sealing and never had dust issues. I'd rather have a camera that gives a high quality image, sadly the x100 series is a disappointment on that front imo

    • @po.ntandshoot
      @po.ntandshoot  6 месяцев назад +2

      Hi David. For the Fuji I mainly have it set to continuous focus, wide AF tracking, with a single point focus area. I generally have the single point in a central location and recompose the subject. I'm finding this focus point is going for walkies now and again, so I'm having to quickly track the subject using the touchscreen as the joystick is too cumbersome!

    ive been shooting with both cameras. The Ricoh's form factor and file quality is unmatched. The autofocus is sluggish, it takes a learning curve to get used to snap focusing. The fuji is overall a more enjoyable shooting experience to me. The Camera feels better in hand, I enjoy the physical knobs, the autofocus is much snappier than the Ricoh. If I had to pick one, id go with the Ricoh myself due to the size.

      Perfectly put - this is exactly how I'd summarise the two. I wish Ricoh would tease us with the GR IV, but all they've done is release another yet shiny version of the III last night. I can only really trust it in snap focus mode.

    Hands down, GRIIIX is the winner for me. One of the criticisms of the GR is the lack of a viewfinder. I find it ironic that Fuji shooters, and I know a few of them, hardly ever use the viewfinder. I find them looking through the back screen almost all the time. So there goes the argument for the one that has the viewfinder. GR is a funky camera to shoot with but once you get to know your way around the interface, the quality that it gives you runs with the best cameras and lenses out there. The two surprises for me were the colors of the GR and how sharp the lens was. I shot almost exclusively at f2.8 and the images are as good as some of my lenses that cost 2-3X as much as the GRIIIX camera !!!

    • @po.ntandshoot
      @po.ntandshoot  5 месяцев назад +1

      @@po.ntandshoot I agree with all your points. Focus accuracy, as you mentioned was a sore point too. I found myself trying to anticipate the action... "the decisive moment" if you will before I pressed the shutter button. It reminded me of my film days when we were deliberate and did not spray and pray! I think they just updated the firmware and offer some improved focusing capabilities. The GR is a very sophisticated machine. One needs to study and learn its capabilities to get the max out of the camera. I only had it for a few hours. So, there was not enough time to learn all the ins and outs of the camera.

      @@po.ntandshoot compared to a mid to pro level Canon R it’s a bargain. Think my 24-105 F4 L costs the same as the Fuji and the lens possibly weighs as much.
      The best camera for a given situation is the key. I shoot from Fuji 6x9 film, Canon pro DSLR down to the small EOS M5. For travel and city work a small camera is great. My little Minox 35GT and Fuji DL mini did sterling service for the 1980s. I recently scanned some negatives of my 43 yr old son taken when he was 5 on the Minox. We were blown away by the quality and colour - guess what, most were shot on Fuji film. Kodak Gold also came out well.
      As a fall back, an iPhone 13 Pro in RAW still gives ok images but not the same.

    You can get pictures like these, or even better, with any apsc cameras half their price. Nikon z30 or Sony zve10 with viltrox 27mm f1.2 or Sigma 23mm f1.4 will perform much better than these two.

    • @CB-hd4fi
      @CB-hd4fi 6 месяцев назад +3

      Yes, but the issue is size. You cannot carry around a Viltrox 27/1.2 in any pocketable manner. End of the day your best camera is the one you take with you and the form factor ot those two lens choices will mean they are left more often at home than these fixed lens cameras. Personally I prefer more shallow depth of field, but trying to keep it small is difficult. Maybe a Nikon ZF with a 40/2 might do it, because it is full frame. But it's still not really pocketable.

    • @po.ntandshoot
      @po.ntandshoot  6 месяцев назад +3

      I agree - most cameras could compete. It's a whole lot of fun to have pocketable cameras, however, literally keeping one or both on you at all times without a bag (ricoh in jeans pocket, fuji in jacket pocket).
      I generally shoot at around f/4-5.6, so there aren't many examples in this video of how it resolves bokeh etc. I should explore that more.
