It’s very funny that people compared the griii to the x100f, x100v, and now the x100vi. At the end of the day the griii is as good as it gets for the size and it’s hard for ricoh to make it better without adding size or feature compromises.
Well it actually shouldn't be that hard. Its been almost 6 years since its launch. All they have to do is bring back flash from GR2, improve IBIS, drastically improve AF, and maybe up few mpix, plus better battery life. Tilting screen would be sweet too. It doesnt seem impossible or even hard, since most of that could probably be achieved with just faster and more energy efficient processor. Ricoh is just milking hyped GR3 to the limit with all those new, changing nothing, editions. And I kinda understand that, since the only real competitor to GR was Fuji X70, which is long gone.
@@filskar_ The camera's shortcomings are why it's so small, it doesn't need to be an X100.
@@filskar_ you are right but there is other competitor, fujifilm xf-10.
1:00 Haha, as a German I had to laugh really hard on the “HDF, as long as you’re not German…” 😂😂😂
I love using my X100F on the dance floor for those party shots during weddings. I set it up for light streaks using the built-in flash to freeze the subject. It's just a lot more fun to use something like an X100F in that environment during a wedding and I think it's less intimidating for guests.

One thing I’ll suggest: take a photo with the GRiiix, and the same photo with the x100vi. You’ll have to stand slightly farther back with the gr to get the same frame, but the GR will have more detail. If you crop in, the GR, even with almost half the megapixels, resolves better and has more detail. Does it matter? No. But megapixels aren’t everything. Ricoh lenses are incredibly sharp
What makes the sharpness of an image is precisely the number of pixels. Otherwise what else ? That makes no sense ???
@@danieldelima956it’s the combination of the lens sharpness and the sensor resolution. As a comparison the Canon M32mm f1.4 on an M6 mk 2 or even the M5 comes out as razor sharp despite those cameras having fewer MP. Then we need to understand that the whole MP thing is based on a square function (maths). So when you print 40mp isn’t 40/24 times as resolving it’s approximately the square root of 40/24 so in reality 1.3 not 40/24 = 1.67.
In fairness my X100VI lens is very sharp and many independent tests have proven that. The Canon M 32mm is an exceptional lens and expensive too. When people criticise the Fuji lens they either haven’t focused it precisely or are just dissing it because they haven’t got the camera….or have and not using it properly….
@@danieldelima956 to an extent, in order to determine the quality of the image you need two main factors
Sensor and lens choice.
Lenses, especially when you start getting into the vintage manual lenses that have character built in and aren’t manufactured for a sterile look, can have a big impact on the quality of the image
You still need a powerful señor or a lot of pixels to capture what you are sending through the lens…however to clarify your concern, you can absolutely impact the sharpness of an image with the lens
I realised that as well.
Even with the Viltrox 27mm on my X-T5, despite being 40mp, when you crop the image it presents much less details when compared to the Ricoh on a half megapixel sensor.
I don’t understand why this happens, but cropping on the X-T5 retains very poor details.
I had both cameras for about 6 months and ended up selling my x100vi because, as you said, image quality of the GRiiix is noticeably better than the x100vi's. But the main factor was size to me in the end. The GRiiix is truly pocketable and it's a no-brainer to take it with out anywhere, whereas the x100vi is simply too big to take it with you literally all the time.
I think it's important to note that the lack of an ND filter on the HDF models means that you are limited to 1/2800 at f/2.8 and 1/4000 at f/5.6 - if you want to a shallow depth of field in a bright environment you'll encounter that issue - especially as there is no electronic shutter either.
Well for the price of one X100, you can get the GR3 and GR3x (almost). Its like carrying prime lenses but now comes with the sensor and the body and a screen, each.
Not too long ago the GR3 was being compared to the Fujifilm XF10 which cost half the price; it’s strange to see it being compared to the X100 IV at nearly twice the price. The XF10 is well worth a look if you can find one.
Great Video!! I'm gonna have to pick up that Ricoh!!
HDF takes ethereal looking photos, wow.
I love my Ricoh GRIII X HDF
Great video touching on a lot of points!
I've been using my GR III X with the Reflex Lab mini flash (Gen 1, I think Gen 2 is a bit bigger with more battery) and it's been working really nice for night/party style shots.
When it's on the camera it's definitely harder to pocket sometimes but the flash is really small so it's workable.
Also you can put the GT-4 wide adapter onto the GR III X, which turns it roughly into a 30mm which is interesting. I don't see many people trying it since I guess it's unofficial but if you Google it you'll find some tests that look great. I'm considering it since it'd come in handy for indoors/tight spots to swap to 30mm (similar to the regular GR III focal length) for a few shots here and there. It could somewhat solve the dilemma of buying two GR III cameras.
In regards to video (thanks for being vocal about that), I wish the GR III had even tolerable video (even just decent clean HD and good AF!). It's awful in terms of aliasing, issues, and missing focus though, it looks somewhat okay on the rear of the camera but dreadful when you see it on the computer. If they could improve that I'd probably get rid of my bigger camera entirely because it'd make it the ultimate pocket hybrid camera.
I think video gets left behind on Ricoh because the fan base around the camera can sometimes be antagonistic against anyone suggesting doing video on it unfortunately, for fear of it ruining what makes it perfect for photos (which is totally valid too). But I hope Ricoh are taking note of Fuji improving their video since there's a lot more hybrid shooters now and they could take the crown for the smallest APS-C hybrid
In the comments it's always "Ricoh, why don't you have more features?", and not "Fuji why can't you get smaller?". They are both fantastic. Choose the one that suits you or get both.
If you want retro style and dials, go for Nikon ZF, it's full frame and not much bigger than the Fuji. If you want quality in the palm of your hand, go for the Ricoh. I'm waiting for the IV, both to see if it's any good and, if it doesn't add much, to buy a cheaper IIIx HDF, because when the IV comes out I assume the IIIx HDF will go down in price.
Nikon ZF looks awesome. But some things I like better on the Fuji workflow. For example, putting the iso or shutter speed into auto mode or 'creating' aperture priority mode with the dials... much better and I tuitive on Fuji. Hopefully in the Zf MKii.. I would switch over.
Lmao that HDF joke
I see you have the Nisi UV filter to make the Fuji weather resistant. It’s good value. Another strong recommendation is the excellent Smallrig grip if you have slightly larger hands. It’s still very stylish but gives the user far more confidence in single handed operation. I use mine with a peak design cuff as well as I don’t want to drop an expensive tool like this.
Ricoh’s nd filter not available in video I believe
Hi. Where is the site the you talked about the gr3 portra recipe?
0:52 That one was good 😂
I’m just scratching my head at Ricoh for this one. Instead of making next gen camera they made the name ones with a bloom filter. I was hoping for a GRIV that has an upgraded sensor and most importantly better Af and weather sealed.
I mean, isn't it just about R and D costs? A whole redesign and new product costs a lot of money. If some people are still choosing the GRIII over the FujiFilm X100VI, does a smaller brand like Ricoh really need to put in the R and D for a new model yet? I'll get a GRIV whenever it comes out, but I don't really feel like I need one yet. I'd like to be able to shoot with a bit higher ISO with the Ricoh, and better low light AF, but in good light the Ricoh is still totally fine to me.
I sold my X100V for the Ricoh. Yeah its a nice camera but too overpriced, and too much hype over basic features. I have an XT4 for when I want to use an EVF and do video. As a practical power travel cam for stills in a small body, you cant beat the Ricoh for the price.
This is how I feel too. Would rather a Ricoh and an interchangeable lens FujiFilm than an X100V, which I just did not like that much.
I have a Ricoh GR3X (ND filter). I don't really understand why someone would prefer a mist filter than a ND one. It's really easy to simulate a mist filter when processing the photo, but if there is too much light when you're shooting, the mist would be useless and you can't simulate a ND when processing. Burned light is for ever. May be there's something I'm missing, or not?
Great video! I want to like the Ricoh and love it’s small size but the Fuji is just superior
The Ricoh has no built in flash and you'll have constant anxienty that you'll get dust in your sensor whoch will eventually happen one day
My X100S gets way less attention than the X100VI, even with identical lens hoods. So I imagine would the Ricoh. The lack of a built-in flash on the Ricoh is also huge, to me, a leaf shutter is wasted without using the high speed sync and the built in flash means I'll actually use it. Both great cameras, the Fuji is way overpriced (I still bought one). You can get a 99 dollar wide conversion lens for the Fuji, it doubles as a macro as well.
Ricoh GRiii is unbuyable new right now. Anywhere.
Someone on Reddit told me to keep checking on Amazon and I finally was able to order one at MSRP the other day. Ricoh drops a few new ones in different variations on there every now and then. And I lucked out and checked at the right time.
@@cbschrader Thank you very much!
Join the Ricoh Sub-Reddit. I was able to grab one on Ricoh's website a few days ago because somebody posted that they were in stock.
@@colejchase Wow. Those are very hard to come by. Glad you got one. Joining sub-Reddit now. 👍🏻
It's such a bummer that the filter is so strong. I like the idea but everything looks like a TV soap from the early 2000's.
Could you help me out here .
US customs in Dublin Ireland are demanding I get an ATA CARNET for my camera gear .
I’m not a professional photographer and the cost of the carnet is more than the gear is worth .
Are there any associations that could help me here .
They said they will confiscate my gear if I don’t have one on my next entry to the USA .
Hmm I don’t know much about that sadly. Hopefully someone else can help out
Thanks
It’s basically a passport for professional camera gear . To make sure your bringing back the same gear
@@lousinclair oh, we have one of those as well for Canada/USA but it’s free at the airport. They just copy down serials and sign off on it. I got one in 2006 because someone told me to, but never ended up being asked for it ever and I travel a lot. Weird they are requiring one. Maybe new rules came in
Try the Lumix fx10... Better than both of those
My smartphone takes better pictures than the Lumix
@@Kids11111 pleased for you
嗚嗚。我都買不到。
Ricoh needs to release a GRIV… seems like the perfect digital street camera but it’s getting old.
Whats "old"? A good camera doesn't suddenly stop being good because of age. Stop chasing the next shiny new toy and focus on your photography and you might improve.
@@michamilka it's good.. great even. But could be better. Hence, looking forward to a GR4. I would love to see better autofocus and an f/2 or even f/1.4 if possible in that tiny body. I love my GRiii but you need to calm down your fanboy anger lol
@@sjpachica3 I'm not a fan boy lol I've even sold my GR until they make something worth the money.
If it's smaller but ugly looking than I rather have the bigger and better looking X100vI that is still compact and hella good looking lol (:
If u are wondering if u sell your left kidney or right
