Having owned a GRiii, it is absolutely mind boggling how many features the Ricoh engineers fit into that tiny powerhouse of a camera! The image quality and lens are insane on these cameras.
I have both a GR III and a X100V. The Fuji is so beautiful, has flip screen, a great viewfinder, a joy to hold and take pictures. I take a camera with me all the time and find myself picking up the Ricoh much more often. Pocketability is the thing. And the lens is really great .
The GRIII replaced the X100V for me. It’s just so pocketable, incredibly easy to use, and the color profiles on it are so good I’ve actually been using the jpgs. Now I have the GRIII for everyday carry, and the X-T5 for vacations or going out with photography in mind.

I have owned the X100v and the Ricoh GR III. I think the Ricoh takes sharper and clearer pictures. Another advantage of the Ricoh for me is the IBIS and the DNG RAW format. The lack of a viewfinder bothers me less with the Ricoh than the lack of a flip-up display. The Ricoh GR III, a card reader and an iPad fit in every travel bag. An unbeatable combo.
I think you do a really nice job at explaining things in a way that is relatable and realistic. I enjoy my GRIII -- it's somewhere in-between a toy camera and a spy camera, but with a sharp lens and an APS-C sensor. I love my Fuji cams but the Ricoh color profiles are something that I really enjoy. Also great in nature. Rock on
I am a primary M shooter and I adore the GR3 in snap focus mode at f/5.6 as a pure P&S. I could definitely use it as my only camera. I also have an X100V and never touch it TBH, and your comments about usage patterns really resonates with me.
The Ricoh GRIII/GRIIIx with a monochrome sensor (like Ricoh's Pentax K-3 Mark III Monochrome) would be a killer camera. A monochrome sensor would be extremely useful for this camera, as it would compensate for its biggest drawback, the f2.8-only lens, with the one-stop extra light sensitivity gained by removing the Bayer sensor array.
It makes sense since the K3 Mono dropped…however, Ricoh can barely make enough of the III/IIIx, so they may not have the capacity to produce another model. 🤔
I have been using the original GR from 2013. 10 years later it still going strong. It’s my favorite camera of all time, even when compared to my Leica M’s. A true take every where camera.
I was thinking about getting the X100V, but then went for the X-T5 because I wanted interchangable lenses (coming from Canon EOS). I'm honestly really glad that I did, I was later able to try an X100V from a friend and it felt like a really "weird" size. It's too large to be truly pocketable unless you wear cargo- or very loose fitting pants, really not muuuuch smaller than an X-T5 with a very thin lens on, but misses many of the back buttons (let alone interchangeable lens support). It's this slightly "awkward" middle-ground where I'd rather have a more fully-feature X-T5 and a much smaller camera like the GRIIIx. Just my thoughts though.
I still have a a canon dslr and an X100v. Therefore I can choose what I want to take with me. The fixed lens was what attracted me to the x100 series of cameras. I am now considering getting an XT-5 and keeping both of the others.
It's a valid point if you're a hobbyist camera enthusiast and probably the best set up for that. There's no denying the GR series pockeabillity and quick operative ability and the T5 is the flagship workhorse, great for more dialed in control and professional usage also. I personally got the x100vi over the GR to have an OVF and manual controls available when I want them when using the camera as a family/fun camera and as a back up to a GFX when on a work contract. I absolutely can see your set up as an optimal dream set up also. All cameras just depends on the needs and preferences of the user, there's no "best" anything camera it's all preference as to what kind of sensors, shutter speed capabilities in body stabilisation, weather sealing, lenses etc a person wants anyway
I’m still using my GRii. I take it everywhere in a little padded pouch. It was the only camera I took to Europe once, and I’ve even done some astrophotography with it. It’s a brilliant camera.
Couldn't agree more, and if you can, get the Nisi mini filter kit. Easy to enjoy with the 5 minutes time mode that avoid bulb mode as with every other cameras (30 sec. max.), say, when shooting very long exposure with a 10ND at sunset... Short vid. on that cool filter set used with a GR II... ruclips.net/video/CtpO25JLFfY/видео.html
Another option to lower the chance of dust intrusion down and provide some lens protection in your pocket, is to get a metal lens cap (they are felt lined). I have just got a cap (before my GRIIIx has arrived!), and it really looks the part (and won't increase the size much at all) for a $10 ish item. Apparently if you forget to take it off the camera just pushes it off!
I learned my lesson about dust with my X70 and X100. I have had a filter on this since day 1. No dust. I think the dust issue is so big because there's not too many things to complain about with this camera, so the little things blow up. I'd say it has the same dust problem intensity as the X70 or X100. Really a non-issue if you use a lens cap or filter before sticking it into linty pockets. ✨
I used to own an X100V (Pre-Hype), sold it off after some light use and was absolutely surprised by this sudden popularity, which came out of the blue. Now, I do own the GR IIIx and personally, I think it's the better camera, more compact, more fun. :-)
Have have the first gen GR (28mm) and use it with the snap focus mode.. put it in f/5.6 or so, and use the +/- buttons on the back to quickly switch distance. With that it becomes a super fast camera for street photography or snapshots.
"All photo exists of me were taken on an Iphone" - I feel that one so much, since I'm always the one behind the camera taken pictures of the family 😀 You already touched on the AF, but would be interesting to see, if your opion changes after using it for a fews and compare it next to the X100V. Most videos on YT say it's quite bad, therefore interested in your experiecen. What is also known is the bad battery life due to physics. Still would be interesting to compare it to the X100 series in regards of how many shots on one battery. I personally would like to see a new release GRIV with weather sealing, improved AF and perhaps optimised battery (if they want to keep the size only way to reduce battery consumption is by using parts which use less).
I have the griiix & the original X100 & X-E1 as daily carries. The Fuji's are a different experience , but the ricoh is tiny and really can go everywhere, and the ibis for indoor shots is a huge advantage. Fuji really needs to revive the X70 line !
An important bullet point to note is the X100 series has a built in flash to whereas the Ricoh GR iii does not. These small cameras truly get carried everywhere and not having a built in flash I’ve found has been a major disadvantage, especially during these shorter winter days.
I agree that I'd much rather have a flash than IBIS, which I think is what took the place of the flash. I think they couldn't fit all of it in. I think Ricoh has an opportunity here to create a very small on-board flash that is full TTL for that true point-and-shoot experience, that maybe has a built-in battery and USB-C charging. Something about half the size of the older Fuji EF-X20 would be ideal...
The Ricoh GRs also don't have weather sealing, which can be a huge drawback for a street photography camera. The X100V, in contrast, is weather sealed as soon as you put a filter on the lens.
I much prefer the IBIS over a little dinky flash. It’s so useful at night and adding a small flash unit isn’t really that difficult if you need one. But I’m open to compromise, just add both for the GRIV 🤓
The photo transfer app is great too. I can transfer 16 mb JPEGs or full size raw photos easily (about 3 seconds each). The Sony app always crashes and is so temperamental. The 28 mm gr3 is my dedicated travel camera.
Hi Benj, what is the make of the square hood. At first, I thought this was a new Ricoh accessory, but I can't find it listed. Could it be from Squarehood or JJC? We are planning to link your video in a written review. Mike
GR3 is inch / inch the best digital P&S digital camera out right now. i absolutely love this thing and it made me love digital. it's instant, but still fully manual, is the size of a thicc wallet and takes photos on part with my dslr. it's magic.
Be interesting to compare it to the latest iPhone ? Also would be interested to see how that square hood with glass would do in strong sunlight can’t see how you wouldn’t get internal reflections ?
@@smith507 I wasn’t underwhelmed at all. It was just the way the camera worked, the snap focus, etc. I found myself fighting the camera. I would highly recommend it to others because I feel the issue is me and not the camera.
Absolutely love the griiix as a daily snap camera. I really hope they improve autofocus and maybe re-include the flash. I own an Fuji T5 and honestly have been only using it when I don't want to deal with super slow af. I understand that snap focus exists, but don't love using it.
Really enjoyed the images you made with the GR, interesting and beautiful insights into your life. And that is what I love about the GR. I've owned a lot of amazing cameras over the years, and they have suited my creative image making processes and print needs at those points in my life. Now I just want a simple point and shoot that will make beautiful images of my wife and my life, with no fuss. Everything that comes out the GR is perfect and captures of my life. I've been playing with the custom film simulations, found some looks I really like. After 20 years of RAW shooting, I'm only shooting jpeg now. There is something pleasing about committing to a look at the time of making the image, and with such beautiful images from the GR, I dont feel a need to shoot RAW and post process now. It seems like a simple camera, but it has deep thoughtful intentionality behind it that can make it very creative, or just point and shoot. Love it. Thanks for the video.
With the new x100 definitely being announced it the next couple of months and I’m 90% sure there’ll be a new GR in 2024 it’ll be interesting what improvements are made to each one.
I have the Gr3 and just ordered the fuji x100vi. I use gr3 along with the Sony A1 for work. Some of my favorite images are from GR3 because no one notices and you can get more intimate photos. I've also taken the ricoh in situations where i cannot risk the a1 such as when I had to cover people crossing a treacherous body of water. I think the x100vi is too big but I want to check it out as a camera that has decent af and fits between a1 and gr3.
Always good to hear your thoughts Benj. I shot Nikon professionally for many years and still rock a Nikon Coolpix A. Prior to its introduction, the Coolpix cameras were plastic consumer point and shoots. But the Coolpix A has a heartier build quality than the Ricoh GR series with similar specs (16MP, 18mm lens, APS-C sensor) and creates Nikon NEF files. If you decide to acquire a Ricoh GR, you might consider a neck lanyard. They are feather-weight cameras, so you can do this.
The GRIIIx is my daily driver, and I traded in my X100V for it. I had been using Fuji cameras for 7 years, and after getting a chance to try the GRIIIx I far preferred the way it rendered and it's sharpness to my X100V (obviously somewhat subjective), and I think they've knocked it out of the park with the lens and sensor combo. The use case fit my needs better as well, as with a young child, having something that was truly one handed in operation was ideal, and 40mm is also my focal length preference. The dust issue is a concern, but the usability and picture quality trumps it for me.
Yes, a tiny sensor, but it still produces more than acceptable results, and age is immaterial. My EOS350D is almost 20 years old but still produces more than acceptable images.
It's becoming a really confusing time for camera buyers. I recently got a Pixel 8 Pro (basically free from my carrier with a payoff discount). I have an X100V that I got below retail in 2021, and a Nikon Z7 (refurbished for $1399 without a lens). The Z7 with 40mm prime is only slightly larger than the X100V and has a grip, image stabilisation and a great evf, plus the flexibility to use any lens I have or would want. The X100v has the retro vibe, ovf/evf and built in flash. The Pixel 8 Pro is always with me, and has pretty great quality when shooting 12mp dng files. The head says sell the X100V, and just keep the Nikon gear and use the Pixel for snapshots. The heart says I will never sell the X100V... it is the fun camera that makes me happy. The Ricoh has always been a compelling camera, but besides pocketability... I can't find a reason to commit.
Owned x100f now GR3. If you don't carry a bag, GR3 is the better edc camera because of its size and weight. You can really fit it in your pants pocket meaning it is always with you. I tried to bring x100 out without a bag but it is only pocketable if you wear a jacket, and you still feel the weight. I don't use my phone camera much since carrying the GR3.
I had the GRii for 10 years. It is a work horse. I have dropped it in multiple puddles and streams. I dont think its water proff. Or even water resistant. But I let it dry out for a day or two and it starts up fine every time. I have dropped it onto concrete mutiple times too. Its beat up. But it works everytime I start it up and takes excellent photos. Once its broken I will buy the GRiii. Its an excellent camera.
Benj, have you tried the Touch Focus mode on the GR3s yet? That’s such a game changer for me that it is the only focus mode I use. I am curious on your long term thoughts on each of the film simulations and compare them to your presets
The benefit to touch focus and shoot is it looks like you're using a phone (sort of). This is the strength of the GR cameras. They look like something you'd get at the bargain bin.
A 3rd option to both is the G1X Mark iii. IMHO its the best out of the APSC compacts out there overall. As someone who shoots with a full frame interchangeable lens setup, and wants a fully capable everyday secondary camera out of their compact camera - the G1X is the only APSC Compact that fits the bill. The 1inch cameras are also great (especially those with f1.8-28 apertures) but the dynamic range does suffer with the smaller sensor. Having 24-70mm equivalent makes the G1X mark iii genuine alternative to carrying a full DSLR/Mirrorless. The F2.8 - 5.6 is less bright than a the Fuji but you also get to go wider to 24mm for landscapes and closer into the "nifty 50" and 70mm focal lengths when you want to focus into a subject. Being stuck to a single focal length - especially a "jack of all trades, master of none" focal length of 35mm equivalent for both the Fuji and Ricoh are massive turn-offs. It has 5 axis stabilisation, which is better than the GR III and of course better than the X100 with no stabilisation. The weather sealing is also nice - something both Fuji and Ricoh have omitted on their APSC compacts,
Its kinda interesting that almost everyone is using "auto white balance" when trying to achieve a "film look".. The most logical would be to set the camera to Daylight and then never change the whitebalance - in this way you will also catch the natural color-shifts in the daylight which pretty much gets lost when you use auto white balance.
Loved the GR before it decided to die, however, when I get time I will fix it and restore its function. I have a X100F and a Q for street, however the GR is pretty much fantastic image capture device, but needs to be more robust.
The way I see it, the GR3 I could fit in my pocket as an EDC, the X100 series to me would have to be used with a camera strap and if I am going to have it slung over my shoulder like that my Nikon Z7 with a pancake does the same job anyway. The XE3 was a great little camera for that purpose.
I had a GRIII and it was a fantastic little camera. I used it all over Europe and used it way more than my X-T4. My main gripe with the Ricoh as a full time travel camera is the lack of any kind of weather or dust sealing. By the end of my Europe trip, i started having dust specs on the sensor which showed in photos. You can remove the dust usually in Lightroom, and can take apart the camera and clean the sensor (although sketchy) but this is what ultimately what ended up with me selling it. If Ricoh made another GR that was weather sealed (without a lens cap which takes away from the size) I’d buy it in a heart beat, over any X100 camera.
Yes with 40mm lens it became almost like Contax T2 (with Sonnar 38mm f2,8) that I used to use all the time! Perfect FL for me! Bought once T3 with 35mm but sold it right away, somehow it didnt work with me
I looked for a small companion to my A7IV and evaluated the GRIIIx as well. But at the end I choose one of the smallest E-mount cameras, the A5100 + SEL20F28. The Ricoh weights 262g and the A5100 weights 270 (348 with the SEL20F28). Of course the A5100 is not the newest camera but it is very slim and offers with the SEL20F28 nearly the same experience like the Ricoh but I can still change the lens - my recommendation!
had the GR film camera for years then the first GR digital until I (stupidly) sold it , always used alongside my mamiya 7 , some of my favourite from the hip shots have been made with it.
Would you recommend the GRIIIx or GRIII and why? I'm leaning towards the GRIII due to having the ability to shoot wide and crop, but I'm unsure which to get for travel/everyday use cases.
I think 40mm is closer to a typical prime lens P&S for a reason so I get why most people would probably go in that direction. I really like 28mm for a P&S but I’ve really liked this one
My wife was the same with the Ricoh. She has never been interested in cameras, but she put the ricoh in her purse when we went out and actually used it throughout the night. I think she would enjoy the 28 more than 40 though since she is used to her iphone.
I had one, and yes the IQ is amazing and love the size and quiet, unassuming nature of the camera. Love how you get serious IQ in a package that no one takes seriously. Great for street shooting. My gripe was the AF had frustrating moments, and I did wish for an EVF. My framing was never great with this camera, and because of '40mm' focal length, it's less forgiving than the 28mm focal length of the GRIII. So I stayed with the GRIII.
Thanks as always for a clear, honest review. I hesitated for a while before I bought the Ricoh (have the Fuji). I’m glad I bought it (yet another camera !) and have it with me for those moments on the street when I need a quick snap. About the presets idea - YES ! You’ve got a great eye for rendering and I’d be interested.
the combination of the sony a5100 and the 20mm 2.8 is a good option too if you are looking for something that wont break the bank. I had a grIII for a while but ended up selling it because it was just as expensive as my full frame system, and i just could not justify keeping it any longer.
I have the GRIIIX, the Nikon Zf, and my pre-ordered X100VI just came in. Really don’t think I’ll keep the Fuji but I’m going to at least check it out. The Ricoh is just so stellar and what I miss with it and would get with the Fuji, I get in the Nikon with a heck of a lot more… just with more size and weight. If the GR’s would just be weather sealed….
@@benjhaisch My fault! I was thinking it has the same 18mm (28 equiv.) as the other models. Now I am much more interested in this camera. probably the only thing I'd miss from the old x100s I had, is the high speed flash.
Hope to try one someday. I've been on a long point and shoot casual cam journey. Tried a lot of cheap and older options from panasonic, nikon and fuji. But right now i've landed on the X-Pro 2 and the pancake 27mm. One day would like to have my hands on this too, just wish the newer models had a flash and i'd be sold.
I have shot with the original Ricoh GR for years now and I just love this camera. I like to always carry a camera and the GR allows me to do that. It is a great street camera but I also use it to shoot family gatherings or parties. I love the the image quality the APS-C sensor provides and although I am normally a Fuji/Leica kind of guy I love the handling of the GR. One of the truly great cameras.
Nice review. I have shot with both and the GRIIIX has the sharper lens and the better color. As a former Fuji X owner, I am surprised that the GR trumped the Fuji in the color department. After all is it not Fuji who is the king of color? Short battery life is a negative for the GR. Otherwise, it is the more stealth/pocketable of the two for street photography.
Hey, Benj i am using Ricoh GR IIIx exact the way you are talking about more than a year. Screen turned off, optical vf always in AV. With the price of the films my Ricoh have turned into my digital film camera 😅 i transfer and edit the photos only on LR mobile and move on. Also very good review.
Hi Benj - I just wanted to add my take here. i had a Ricoh but the battery life just killed me. The closest I could get and still be happy was (is) the Fuji X-e3 (I prefer the X-E3 over the E4 if only for the Focus Switch on the front. And the price) with the 18 ƒ2. Put on a 27mm and you're in GIIIX focal length territory, and even smaller than with the 18mm. Anyway, I just shoot it in JPEG Aperture Priority and Auto everything else, and mostly in Manual Focus. My Point? It's really small, goes everywhere and has a decent battery life, at least compared to the Ricoh. I loved that little bastard, but when it comes to just shooting on the fly I've found that the X-E3 wins out, Because the ONLY thing - and I know it's an important thing - that the GR beats any Fuji X camera on is size. Just. In my case it's something I found I could live without.
i wish the price would come down. my chinease rugged phone has no stabilisation so not good for point snd shoot. i use a panosonic tz95 which is great but id like the gr3x.
I had the original analog Ricoh GR1, great little camera but it works best in program mode IMO (aperture mode was available). It had a very basic viewfinder though, which is missing on all the digital versions. A EVF (even a tiny one) would make the GRIIIx interesting to me. Without it's not.
I been debating on purchasing the new X100 coming out this year or the Ricoh GR (new) also pretty sure coming out this year also. The only single thing i care about that would make me instantly choose the GR would be if they finally managed to make it weather sealed. Crossing my fingers they do because i already have a Fuji X-T5 so getting the X is more a FOMO, move.
@@mahinfayaz Yes, but it's bulkier and cannot be used with one hand all day. Really quite different tools. The philosophy is completely different. X100V = "I'm going out to take photos today" Ricoh = "Oh look! A photo opportunity! Never would have had this shot if this wasn't in my pocket" I rented both and went with the Ricoh. Personally, there was no competition, and Ricoh just wins hands downs for my needs. Size, IBIS, snap focus, one-handed operation, macro mode, inconspicuous etc.
@@professionalpotato4764 I guess it doesn't matter to me since I carry the x100 in my bag at all times. I don't think any of my pockets would fit the gr comfortably either
@@benjhaischIDK, I've got good stock at both regional retailers here. Add to that, ain't nobody scalping GR's. Whereas the X100V is being hoarded and scalped by soulless golems wherever you look.
If you're doing another Ricog GR 3 video, can you talk about the quality of prints? What is the largest size print before pixelation shows its ugly face? I'm primarily interested in BnW.
Have Leica M, Ricoh GR1, Fuji X100V, and sold the X100V. It's in a weird spot in terms of size. Not small enough to be a carry everywhere camera, and not much lighter when around the neck vs the M. Sold the X100V and kept the GR and Leica M.
Funnily enough, one piece of advice I use regarding dust for the GR III is closing the mic and speaker holes, since you’re not going to be using it for videos.
My GRiii overheated in hot days, froze on cold days. I guess its not made for swiss weather. Never getting a Gr again. Sorry. Loved it alot when i was able to use it. Images and usage was great
I sold a x100F for the GRIII, and am much happier. I used to have an OM-D EM-5 with a 35mm equivalent lens on it, and I liked it so much better than the x100F, and to me they are just similar things. The GRIII is really a pocket camera, and really makes you take a different type of photo.
Benj, long time fan here! The quilted jacket! Sweet. Please share the name of it. Or link. Thanks for all your great work!!! Michael Neumann One World Productions.
They are choosing it because they can buy it. You can’t buy the X100V at least not even close to retail. Everyone is selling it for double, which is madness.
Had a GRIIIX. Honestly, too small for my hands, no EVF and no weather sealing. Beautiful images. I tend to want to take such a small portable camera on walks, etc where lack of weatherproofing is a real issue. Ultimately, the camera and I just did not meld.
Honestly? I feel like that the nostalgia is a bit different. Yes, when I was younger, everyone was still shooting film. But in my teens, those shitty CCD point and shoot cameras became a thing and the GRiii really reminds me of those times. It's also really family-friendly. Anyone can use the GR because it's like those shitty CCD point and shoot cameras. Point and shoots reminds me of just capturing a fun moments without having to think. The X100v reminds me more of the other side of photography where you take a photo more for artistic intend if this all makes sense? I do wish it would have had a flash tho.
Nice review but may I make a suggestion? Editing. Cut this down to something like 8:00. You go on and on about the size; we get it, we fast forward and you're still talking about it. Otherwise, well done.
Love these insights! I'm still choosing my Fuji x100v just because I haven't gotten the right Picture Profile dialed on my Ricoh GRiii just yet it seems.
I think you really touched on the key point here that there's a use case for both of these cameras with the X100V looking and feeling like a more serious photographic tool with its viewfinder, controls, size, and accessories and the GRIII/x feeling a little bit more like a 35mm point-and-shoot that sort of gets thrown in a bag or pocket to have when or if the opportunity for a photo arises. While I wouldn't consider a GRIII/x for my only camera (mostly because of the lack of weather sealing), they do make for a great second body.
What I love about the x100 and ricoh GR cameras are that the wife could never tell when i get a new one.

You willing to sell that X100v for a good price?
Came to ask the same as above lol
The Ricoh GRIII/GRIIIx with a monochrome sensor (like Ricoh's Pentax K-3 Mark III Monochrome) would be a killer camera. A monochrome sensor would be extremely useful for this camera, as it would compensate for its biggest drawback, the f2.8-only lens, with the one-stop extra light sensitivity gained by removing the Bayer sensor array.
I would buy that camera in a heartbeat!!!
I heard a rumour this is happening.. fingers crossed
It makes sense since the K3 Mono dropped…however, Ricoh can barely make enough of the III/IIIx, so they may not have the capacity to produce another model. 🤔
Would love to see that. Sensor is already there, and Ricoh/Pentax being a different/niche brand, it all makes perfect sense.
@@jameskezmansurely there will be a new model this year, they have been pretty consistently updating it every 5years or so…
I have been using the original GR from 2013. 10 years later it still going strong. It’s my favorite camera of all time, even when compared to my Leica M’s. A true take every where camera.
How do you take care of it ? A lot of people complain about dust in the iii
Can I just say how much I love your lighting set up? It's so even.
Ah hey thanks!

Me too but mine got lots of dust on the sensor and I can’t get rid of it
Another option to lower the chance of dust intrusion down and provide some lens protection in your pocket, is to get a metal lens cap (they are felt lined).
"All photo exists of me were taken on an Iphone" - I feel that one so much, since I'm always the one behind the camera taken pictures of the family 😀
You already touched on the AF, but would be interesting to see, if your opion changes after using it for a fews and compare it next to the X100V.
I have my eyes on the GRX III HDF. Have you shot with that?
I have the griiix & the original X100 & X-E1 as daily carries. The Fuji's are a different experience , but the ricoh is tiny and really can go everywhere, and the ibis for indoor shots is a huge advantage. Fuji really needs to revive the X70 line !
Yes plsss fuji
My hope is that eventually they make a Ricoh GR camera with weather sealing.
The Ricoh GRIII is an awesome camera. But I do wish it was built more rugged. It’s really quite fragile.
An important bullet point to note is the X100 series has a built in flash to whereas the Ricoh GR iii does not. These small cameras truly get carried everywhere and not having a built in flash I’ve found has been a major disadvantage, especially during these shorter winter days.
Agree. That why I still use older GR cameras. The flash on a compact snapshot camera is a must.
@@MatthewMorse that would be excellent.
The 28 mm gr3 is my dedicated travel camera.
yes and it transfers DNG as well. While fuji doesn't
Hi Benj, what is the make of the square hood. At first, I thought this was a new Ricoh accessory, but I can't find it listed. Could it be from Squarehood or JJC? We are planning to link your video in a written review. Mike
GR3 is inch / inch the best digital P&S digital camera out right now. i absolutely love this thing and it made me love digital. it's instant, but still fully manual, is the size of a thicc wallet and takes photos on part with my dslr. it's magic.
Yes to those presets! Just started shooting the III myself.
Be interesting to compare it to the latest iPhone ? Also would be interested to see how that square hood with glass would do in strong sunlight can’t see how you wouldn’t get internal reflections ?
I had the GRIII for a while. It takes excellent photos but the camera and I just didn’t get along well, which happens sometimes. Thanks for the video!
In which sense did you feel underwhelmed by it? genuinely interested on your insight.
@@smith507 I wasn’t underwhelmed at all. It was just the way the camera worked, the snap focus, etc. I found myself fighting the camera. I would highly recommend it to others because I feel the issue is me and not the camera.
I legitimately thought the photos taken at Christmas time by you and your family were from the 70’s or early 80’s! Mind blown 🤯
Hello! Can i ask you which flash are you mounting on your X100 in this video?
Hey man! What’s your favorite camera you use to capture your family?!
Wasn't it the initial idea to set and forget the GR and use it as a point and shoot. The snap focus feature is very nifty.
I use to have a GRiii and the two things that really bothered me were the lack of weather sealing and the small battery.
If you liked the GR, why not try the Fuji XQ2? It’s even more compact and has a 25-100mm zoom
Tiny tiny little sensor, almost a 10 year old camera, etc
If Ricoh made another GR that was weather sealed (without a lens cap which takes away from the size) I’d buy it in a heart beat, over any X100 camera.
curious how come you used it more thatn the X-t4
Because they can’t get hold of Fujifilm X100V?
Love my GRiii, it's the perfect P&S. What jacket are you wearing?
would be curious to see you compare a Leica x Mario (type 107) or Leica x (type 113) old school Leica apsc cameras to mordern ones
If only the lens was not so wide! what are my options for 35 or 50mm focal length? and cheaper than Fuji x100 series...
40mm? Sort of right in the sweet spot for you, no?
Calling the X100V or X100VI pocketable is almost an insult to the GR III or GR IIIX.
On focus, you should use snap focus. A genuinely great way to consistently nail focus once you get used to it.
What flash do you have on your X100V?
The EF-X20. It's a good flash for what it is, though it's expensive now and the start up time is slow.
I use the Godox Lux Junior on my Xpro2. Much cheaper than the EF-X20
is that grain on the Ricoh natural or is it an edit ? so good>
Nice review.
Can anyone tell me what that little flash is on top of his X100 in the wide shots?
Fujifilm EF-X20 Shoe Mount Flash
Dust on the sensor again?
i wish the price would come down. my chinease rugged phone has no stabilisation so not good for point snd shoot. i use a panosonic tz95 which is great but id like the gr3x.
I had the original analog Ricoh GR1, great little camera but it works best in program mode IMO (aperture mode was available). It had a very basic viewfinder though, which is missing on all the digital versions. A EVF (even a tiny one) would make the GRIIIx interesting to me. Without it's not.
the optional OVF they make for it works pretty well. I'd rather them bring back the flash on the next GR than add an EVF.
Is it just me, or is the sound max volume very low? Couldn’t follow it with speakers outside. Try again when I’m at home later.
Should be normalized to the -23 LUFS broadcast standard. Sounds fine on my phone, but let me know if anyone else has an issue
@@benjhaisch it was somehow my iPhone, it worked fine later on 😃
I been debating on purchasing the new X100 coming out this year or the Ricoh GR (new) also pretty sure coming out this year also. The only single thing i care about that would make me instantly choose the GR would be if they finally managed to make it weather sealed. Crossing my fingers they do because i already have a Fuji X-T5 so getting the X is more a FOMO, move.
Maybe because x100v is impossible to find?
Partly, but these are always backordered as well.
X100 is also built better
@@mahinfayaz Yes, but it's bulkier and cannot be used with one hand all day. Really quite different tools. The philosophy is completely different.
X100V = "I'm going out to take photos today"
Ricoh = "Oh look! A photo opportunity! Never would have had this shot if this wasn't in my pocket"
I rented both and went with the Ricoh.
Because it’s obtainable?
Are they?
Have Leica M, Ricoh GR1, Fuji X100V, and sold the X100V. It's in a weird spot in terms of size. Not small enough to be a carry everywhere camera, and not much lighter when around the neck vs the M. Sold the X100V and kept the GR and Leica M.
I have a hot shoe mounted thumb grip and a lens protector/filter on my GRiii. Profile is essentially unchanged. Easier to hold, and dust issue solved.
I would love to see these presets!
I love your photographic style!
I’m a Ricoh fan. Had the gr2 and not got the gr3 and 3x. Great vid
I still love the viewfinder and flash in the 100V
Ricoh vs leica d lux 8????
Nice review but may I make a suggestion? Editing. Cut this down to something like 8:00. You go on and on about the size; we get it, we fast forward and you're still talking about it. Otherwise, well done.
If you’re offering your editing services for free, I’d be happy to take you up on the offer. ;)
Hey, reasonable review but it’s a GR review and you talk Fuji to much.
Question….Do you ever take your cameras off f2.8?
Usually f/5.6 for landscapes and f/8 for zone focusing
Also, a Fujifilm mention is in the title. It’d be disingenuous to not.
