Hey, everyone! Just wanted to note that these require quite a bit of power to drive all the way, so I’d recommend using a discrete headphone amplifier with these. I personally like the JDS Labs Atom and Schiit Magni 3, as they’re easily able to drive these.
so if i put them in behringer 404hd ,will it sound okay? sorry for noob question, but i'm not familiar with those:(
lovely review btw!
@@AlanJunior1 No, interface unfortunately won’t cut it for powering these :(
I recommended some amplifiers to give these the power they’ll need, highly encourage you to check them out if you want to get the most out of these, or other high-impedance and low-efficiency headphones.
Would my computer just not be able to power them? So I would need an amp?
@@elentil2550 they wouldn’t be teaching their full potential, and you wouldn’t have much volume headroom.
Do you think the Fiio E10k is able to drive the 990pro?
Better quality than the big channels. Nice job man. A real cohesive review.
really informative. As someone who is often intimidated by audiophile gear, you actually made this more accessible to me. Thanks!
Glad to hear it was helpful!
Great review. I've had these for a little while and I didn't think about EQing them before this video. EQ has fixed a lot of what I found not quite so satisfying out of the box. With the treble tamed and bass extended these make great home office headphones. Thanks
Very fun earphones. Comfortable and fun to listen
These look so damn comfortable
is the sound coming out of the headset loud enough to screw my microphone recording?
I'm afraid to be recording a video and instead of taking only my voice, the sound of the game will be captured as well
What mic do you have? If you have a mic that has built in noise cancellation it will cut that audio out. Due to these being open back audio is leaked and anything / anybody in the room can hear what your listening too. I’d recommend using either a dynamic mic due to it cutting all background noise out ( Rode pod mic) or id recommend using software on maybe a condenser mic to eliminate background. I use a MXL 990 mic with this headset and with software I can’t hear any audio coming from this headset. I’d also recommend using the Motu M2 interface rather than an AMP as you get more for ur money via the Motu M2. Hope this helps.
@@clexti3904 I have a blue yeti and I was actually wondering the same thing
@@Babbis44 I would recommend closed back with a blue yeti, again you could download software in order to eliminate that background noise or look to upgrade ur mic. I’d recommend buying the Motu M2 interface, with the DT 990 pros and the MXL 990 mic. Then you’ll have no audio being picked up and an insane audio setup.
Dude same why do no RUclipsrs talk about that I have a MV7 microphone I really need to know, also do they leak enough for people in the next room to hear you?
@@clexti3904 I don't think you know how noise cancellation works.
I got these because of this review and applied you EQ in Peace and i LOVE them. I've been a loyal Sennheiser customer the last 10 years but the sound stage on the DT 990 just blows every Sennheiser I've had out of the water.
I got the 990 edition and not the Pros because Beyer says these has exactly the same sound profile, less clamp force and a straight cable not coiled like the Pro. And I gotta say, the clamp force is more than enough.
I keep wondering what people do with the cable of their cans since a non- replaceable cable is such a deal breaker. I've never been close to messing up the cable on my own cans ever. That being said I primarily use them on a PC and never move around with them.
They're pretty easy to replace, though you do need to solder them, so If someone doesn't own a lot of tools, there will be an initial cost of buying some tools, but these tools will come in handy overall.
great video, love your channel. keep em coming!
Completely wrong, if something happens to the cables, you can just replace the cables. It's $25 for a new cable, and they are easy to install. Makes no sense paying full price for another set of cans
The version reviewed has a fixed cable. Although it's repairable it requires soldering: north-america.beyerdynamic.com/service-set-connecting-cord.html
i mean buying a new cable, tools needed to take out the damaged cable and then the time and headache if youre not handy. sounds justifiable buying a new one instead
If the cable cannot be replaced by hand without tools it is fixed and most people won't know how to go about removing it and installing a new one and very likely won't have the tools. They will buy a new headphone instead.
@@mrfrosty3 you can get a pair from custom cans with a removable cable mod
i have watched a lot of review of this headphone this one is best by far you are the only one who helped me made my choice thanks!
shera glad you found it helpful, thanks for checking it out!
Now we just need you to review the DT-1990 Pro. Just be ready for controversy hahah
Hahaha they seem pretty interesting to me, I'd love to review those, too! ;)
I never found the DT1990 to be sharp. Then again I’m not treble sensitive
@@chrono-headphonereviews242 did you burn them in? Softens over about 250hours
@@chefgav1 I did burn them in (likely more than 250 hours, I game on them a lot hahaha) and I personally could not notice any change in the frequency response or tonality :(
@@chrono-headphonereviews242 interesting as I have seen charts on the 990 250ohm
6KHZ stabbing peak disappear after burn in
Thank you for the review.
Hope to see more in future
Just got mine, they sound great. I tried them on laptop, sound is great even without amp. I will try your eq settings.
I bought a pair of these last week. Holy shit.. These things are brilliant. They have to be about the best hifi bargains out there. To get a similar sound with normal speakers you would have to spend an amazing amount of money. Comfort is fantastic. I can wear them for hours with no discomfort. They do work plugged into my laptop but when I plug them into my amplifier the tonal balance changes and they open up a lot more. I think as an older design they are more designed to be plugged into hifi equipment. I love bass so I turn the bass up even more lol. But honestly I cant think of any headphone which I have tried which I like better. They seriously blow my Grado sr250s into the weeds....
I don't understand why people bother so much about highs/mids etc. if you can just EQ any headphones?
Stuff evens out after 1-2 weeks I have the feeling. I don't know how that would work, maybe some warming up of the drivers. But I have to state the highs are not annoying anymore. More and more enjoyable and amazing moments where the base is not only majestic, but it's controlled and not dominating the rest. Also it gets tri-dimensional shapes like snakes, cones, with some ornaments depending on instruments used. I have never experienced anything like that. Music is so attractive now. I can't stop listening. I am using no EQ. Listening from Dragonfly Red and from a Technics SU-V8 from 1980. Digital and analogue source (Philips 877 turntable with eliptical GP-412 MK3 stylus (1980)).
you probably just got used to it
@@MrLeSa95 no, I use 4 different headphones and will always choose DT990 when in quiet environment and enough amp power. Nothing has this wide stage and details.
@@outdatedTV soundstage is bc its an open back.. you need to use the same category of headphones to see the differences .
@@RemmyMusic1 soundstage is only one of the of the aspects I mentioned. Also my intention was not to compare different open back headphones, as I have experience only with one model. The intention was to explain my experience with the particular model and to compare it against the other headphones I know. If I had experience with many different open backs, I would say so.
I use a Motu M2 Interface and have no problem driving these headphones. Lots of head room left.
Hey! I loved the review, very very detailed and precise. Just a quick question, I have a Roland Duo Capture Ex audio interface and I'm worried about impedance since 250 ohms is on the higher side. Do you think my audio interface could handle them? I've read reviewers saying that they could run them with a Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 similar to my interface but I'd like more than one opinion. Thank you!
did u find an answer?
Hey im currently looking for gaming headphones. My budged is ~200€ and for me personally its important to have a detachable cable because i am apparently a reaper of headset cables. Can you recommend be some since these dont have a detachable cable?
Also you mention i need an amplifier for these and dont really understand why thats nessesary and most importantly why some are so expensive and some arent. I really only want this for pure gaming.
I previously wanted to buy th Sennheiser HD 58X Jubilee but cancelled my order due to your recommendation in their review. I always thought you could just get dolby atmos for surround sound since software solutions seem to work better than headsets designed for it but i always used crappy headphones so idk.
Bro, I'm worried now. I'm planning about getting these ? Is this worth it or 880 or 770 better ? Or any other in the price range ? For mixing and producing
@Dennis Bos i think the 880 works well for tracking, the 770 for recording and tracking, instead the 990 are awesome for mix and mastering.
@@innerstruggles which one is best for audio monitoring for podcasts 990 or 770 or 880?
I'm using these headphones for over 5 years every day. I find them really balanced with neutral bass, not overpowering at all. I have to boost the bass on my amp when casually listening to music.
If it’s been 5 years replace the ear pads, they’re the edt 990v you’ll hear the difference
Your chnanel is so underrated. Please make more vids
GungHo thanks, I really appreciate the kind words! I am now making videos on the headphone show RUclips channel!
Hey congrats On the new channel Metal571 send me here
I have a weird question
Do you consider buying An AKGK712 Pro over Sundara because of reliability issues
I really want Sundara. It is 50 USD more than the AKG
Sound quality, sound stage, reliability are my priorities. 350$ is my max budget
Thanks for checking out the channel! And as far as the AKGK712 Pro is concerned, I really can’t say because I haven’t tried it yet. What I can say is that the Sundara does come with a one-year warranty, and HiFiMan is pretty good at getting issues resolved when you contact their support team. Soundstage is usually pretty wide on the K7-series headphones, more than on the Sundara, and I don’t see them getting as many defect complaints online.
Same here. Metal sent me here
I have a pair of DT330s which I bought for 20 GBP in 1982, they still work as new, the only thing I had to replace was the ear pads (once), the original cable still OK, the quality of these base H/phones is incredible, if the DT990 are have as good, I will be very pleased.
Great review, bravo!
Can you please o AKG 712 if possible? Thank you for your review!
Hey man, really good stuff. Could you please review audio technica msr7b, because their are very less reviews about them and those who have reviewed says they are better than m50xs.
I would love to know how you compare them with dt770pros.
Shashank Garewal if I get the chance to review those, I’ll definitely compare them to the DT 770 Pro, and the M50Xs!
Yooo thanks for that EQ man, I actually ended up liking it a lot more that the Oratory one, which I still found to be just a liiiitle (read: a lot) too treble heavy. I was coming from X2HRs with a Harmon EQ and putting these on damn near felt like driving nails into my ear drums.
Do you EQ them for gaming? And what EQ do you use? They are arriving tomorrow and i’m so stoked. Sold my HD660’s because I didn’t really liked them. Nice review! Keep up the great work my friend
Forgot to mention I use the EqualizerAPO software
Would love to see a TYGR 300 R review
Having a hard time deciding between these and the DT 990 Premium 250ohms. Also I wonder if my GoXLR mix amp will power these.
Have you tried these with Oratory's EQ? If so, what did you think of the changes?
Yes I’ve tried it as well. It’s also great option to try out, but for me the upper midrange in that preset is a little too far forward, the bass shelf is a little high for my taste, and there is a bit more treble between 5.5k-10k for my preference.
@@chrono-headphonereviews242 I agree that for some the bass is a bit shelf is a little high on Oratory's EQ. Were you using Oratory's old ear pad EQ? The one that I'm using higher mids roll off sooner than yours at 1kHz. I preffer the sound of snares and femail vocals with the Oratory's EQ which im guessing is due to the 5.5k-10k treble. While I prefer Oratory's EQ, Chrono's still sounds great. I'd suggest trying both and making your own tweaks as every listeners ear and headset are slightly different.
Hi,i recently found your channel.I'm searching for pair of headphone especially for online FPS gaming and i need a lot of soundstage and good sound accuracy. So i find these DT 990Pro and Sennheiser HD58x Jubilee on your channel,my question is : wich of these two headphones do you recommend for fps games like Battlefield V,CoD,etc?Thankyou.
I found my ideal rotation to be Dt 990 600 ohm/audio technica ad 5or700x for games and dt 880 600 ohm for music
Dt 990 if you want that added bass for a more cinematic feel and ad's with rolled off bass for the ultimate soundwhoring experience
Once I tested out the 880s for music, I couldn't go back to my 58x and 6xx
Hello, I have a question about your EQ in the description: when you say "Low Shelf at 50hz, +2dB Q of 0.7", does it means that the headphone is at 0.7 natively? How can you tell? Also why adding bass if bass are already too high if I follow you (I thought low range frequencies were where the bass are). Please help me understand.
My second question is about the change that I have to apply, if I for that example add 2db from my soundcard EQ (which start at 0 on a non personnalised EQ), is it nominal? Is +2db from 0 the same as +2db from your value of 0.7?
Thanks for this :)
Hi im thinking of buying this headset for gaming! but which audio interface do i need for that? btw great review!
Hey! All you need is a discrete headphone amplifier. I recommended some of my favorites in the pinned comment. Hope you enjoy these headphones :)
@@chrono-headphonereviews242 Okay,
I am in doubt whether I go for the dt 770 pro or the gt 990 pro for gaming and what do you prefer
@@Squanish I think that I’d go with the DT 770 just because it’s a closed-back and it keeps my music or game audio from leaking into my mic and annoying everyone on discord. It may not have as big a stage as the DT 990, but it gets fairly close and it’s imaging is just as precise
Yo mate. Good video. Have to ask could I drive this with SoundBlasterX G5 DAC which they say it can power up to 600 Ohms headphones, would Ifi Zendac be able also?
Thanks for checking out the video, man! I’m not sure about the G5 because I’ve never tried it, but the ZenDac should be able to drive it.
@@chrono-headphonereviews242 so like what would be better for me DT 770 PRO 250 ohm or 990 Pro 250 ohm I would use it for gaming, YT, watching TV series quite a bit, and my concern is I want headphones to not sweat my ears and get hot cause it is uncomfortable and kills the experience. What do you think?
En Force from my experience there aren’t really many headphones that are as comfortable as the beyerdynamic ones-I don’t think you can go wrong in that regard
@@chrono-headphonereviews242 OK good thanks.
Tristan Lavictoire I like the JDS Labs Atom, or Schiit Magni 3
without using EQ, i don't like this headphones for counter strike. bass is too bloated (like explosions from bomb, nades etc.) overshadows everything and I can't hear a single footstep anymore.
Flashes are too bright, it's too piercing.
Steps are okay to listen to.
But overall it kinda sounds a bit muffled too. I don't think it's that good for detail retrieval.
For comparison the Sennheiser HD560s beat this headphone in every way at gaming. Imaging, Soundstage, linearity etc.
Hi i really appreciate your knowledge of headphone eq curves, can you reccomend a pair of headphones with the flattest eq curve?
Great review! I use the DT 990 PRO with an Asus H170 Pro Gaming motherboard which is sufficient. Windows volume 40/100 is the loudest I want to go, so there is not necessarily a need for an amplifier. Most boards won't have that great of an built in amplifier though but it is worth trying these headphones without an amp first.
BailCas thank you for checking out the review! I think I should have specified in the video, though, that when I talk about a headphone needing an amplifier, I’m not referring to volume, I’m referring to the sound quality. I tried these off my motherboard audio (Gigabyte Aorus Pro WiFi Z390), too, but the dynamic range of the headphones sounded compressed, and soundstage did not sound as clean. I can get plenty of volume on most my devices, but when the power delivery isn’t clean, a headphone cannot reach its full potential.
@@chrono-headphonereviews242 You definitely have a point. I also should have made it clear that I'm also not only referring to volume. I tried a Sound Blaster X G6 (which is considered decent) and couldn't tell a difference. But thanks for clarifying. Cheers
@@chrono-headphonereviews242 i bought an amp and the quality is basically the same. Lowkey regret buying an amp. These are good stock
.
Any other open backs in this price range that you would recommend which have slightly less crazy highs and don't have that mid dip?
I was considering these, but I absolutely hate headphones that gut the range electric guitars usually sit in.
I have the xbox series x with DT 990 Pros connected to an Astro TR Mixamp Pro and the sound amazing. I'm wondering if I can buy either of the mixamps you recommend and be able to use those with my astro mixamp as a bypass but still be able to adjust party chat still.
Im stuck between choosing these, the shp9500 or the hd58x. For gaming (mainly fps games) which one would you recommend?
yvibes if it’s mostly for gaming, I’d go with the Beyerdynamics. I know that they both get recommend for gaming a lot (idk why), but the soundstage and imaging on both the HD 58X and the SHP9500 simply cannot keep up in competitive online shooters. I prefer them for music, but for gaming there are other headphones out there (like the Beyer’s) that significantly outperform them.
@@chrono-headphonereviews242 Thank you for the quick and informed response. After watching your video I could instantly tell you know what you're talking about and for that you've gained a new subscriber. Look forward to your future videos.

@@chrono-headphonereviews242 Update. I got these headphones and I purchased the creative soundblaster x3 as a dac/amp solution. I was looking at your eq settings and was confused as to how I would use them. I was also wondering if those eq settings in your description are for general use, gaming or music. Thanks
@@yvibes Congrats, I hope you're enjoying your new headphones! Also, yeah I should probably make a video on how to EQ headphones seperately. However, at the end of my LCD-2 review there is a full tutorial on how to apply EQ, which I do through Equalizer APO + Peace GUI. Also, the EQ is for general use.

What are the main advantages of the sundara over these? Im trying to figure out if they are worth over double the price of these or the dt770 80ohm. I listen to EDM, dubstep and game but would use a zen dac bassboost with sundara
Next review should be for the DT-1990 Pro
Did you test these straight from the box or were they worn in first?
The only thing better for gaming is the HD 800 of course 😉 so if you want me to send mine over let me know
I always think of the HD 800 as the Audi R18 of gaming.
I heard that hd660s have better imaging. How hd660s compare to dt990pro for gaming?
@@shashankgarewal Not at all, quite the opposite actually. While I do prefer the Sennheisers for music listening, their in-game performance is appalling. The soundstage is very narrow, and the imaging has some fairly noticeable gaps (this hinders directional awareness). For gaming, I would definitely recommend the Beyerdynamics. However, I have to let you know that, for gaming, there isn't much of an upgrade when going from 990 to 1990.
@@chrono-headphonereviews242 I think you wrote your thoughts of overall imaging performance of sennheiser brand headphones.
Check this ruclips.net/video/y805ZXKCaaM/видео.html at 4:50
Shashank Garewal sorry, I was a little vague in my reply. I was talking about HD 600-series headphones, including the 660S. Their imaging is a very apparent drawback as there is a gap in the Front Left and Front Right. What I can say, though, is that instrument separation on the HD660S is better than on the DT1990. However, that is separate from directionality.
I'm not super knowledgeable about headphones, but I'd like something good for general use (Watching RUclips, playing games and listening to music), so overall balanced. I want a good sound quality, high comfortability and durability. I use my PC daily for many hours at a time so it's pretty important that they sit comfortably. are the DT-990 PRO good for me?
great vid
I bought some off Amazon and they're amazing. But I was curious about the varying plastic pieces where the ear sliders adjust. I noticed a version with L & R on the outside, brail, and I think beyerdynamic printed there. But the ones I got just have beyerdynamic on the outside and inside has an R on the inside (for both left & right sides).
Do you think it's just updated or they were repaired maybe? They seem new & I think similar pics are on their site but it's hard to tell.
they can be fake too..
In Peace Equalizer APO, how do you get the particular set of frequency bands (50,150,700...) that you used? If i click on Equalizer Default or Equalizer Octave 1 I get different bands than what you used. Thanks for the great review.
At the top of each band it show show you the affected frequency, just click on the number and change it to the frequency you wish to adjust. In my LCD-2 review there is a short tutorial at the end on using APO.

Is the great macro dynamics heard with or without your EQ settings? I just want to know if it's attributed to their tonality or not.
Great review as always!.
It was independent of EQ, the micro dynamics here were pretty good out the box--one of the first things that stood out to me (aside from the treble).

Hi,
Which game (FPS) was featured in this video?
What equipment are you listening with please?
Do you use EQ with gaming? If so what app and is there any delay?
I apply EQ using Equalizer APO + the Peace GUI plugin. It applies system-wide, and once I apply it once I never have to enable it manually; it just enables the last selected settings when I turn on my PC. So yes, I go use it with gaming, but it can be instantly disabled. No, there is nodelay when applying EQ.

Hey, can someone tell me how loud is the leak of sound through the back? I'm thinking of buying this so I can mix and record music when others sleep in the house.
They are completely open. Tons of leak, that's the point. Sounds like you need the dt770s which are closed
They have a lot of leak especially when using a powerful amp with the volume turned up. I also recommend the dt770s.
What EQ software do you use???
Can i use the Blue Yeti Nano as an amp for this headphones?
No. I think that you’d be better off using your motherboard’s audio jack.
God bless
Would 80 ohm be fine for gaming. I’ve been using the Astro A40 TR without the amp for 2 years should i get these
Unfortunately, These will require a headphone amp as they do need a fair bit of power if you want to get the most out of them-even at 80 ohms. Also, the A40 TR has very low power requirements, and are meant to be powered without pretty much anything. The MixAmp that they include isn’t really an amp, it’s more of a DAC that enables Astro’s DSP features. For the Beyer’s you will need a discrete headphone amp; like a Schiit Magni 3/Heresy, or JDS Labs Atom.
So there’s no point in getting 80ohm over 250. I mean I’ve got a 750W power supply and a really good pc but that prob doesn’t make a difference. So should I just buy a low end amp and the 250?
Pleo yeah, the driver’s in the Beyer are not really that efficient, so I think that you’re better off going with one of the amps I mentioned and getting the 250ohm version. I hope this was helpful!
Thank you it is very helpful. One last question? I am very new to all of this are there any amps that would work with the 250 around the $50 range. If not maybe $80-100.
Pleo hmm I’m honestly not sure, but I would highly recommend that you invest first in a good amp that will be able to drive pretty much every headphone you play through it.
What amp u use to drive these?
I have two questions
1.Will it (250ohm) work with stienberg ur12 AI?
2. Will it work with Sony NWa55?
Hey, unfortunately no, that won’t really be able to drive these all the way. I’d recommend a JDS Labs atom or Schiit Magnii 3 to drive these.
I ordered these exacts phones. Should arrive today or tomorrow. Hopefully my DAC and amp get good sound out of them.
As long as they can power em, which they should. They are great headphones, I've had my pair for over 4 years now. Still great
@@YungEagle3k do u recommend these as of now? Im thinking of ordering them tomorrow. I might have to buy an amp idk if my laptop is strong enough.
For eq, what does that q of 0.7 mean?
hey dude,
which ones would you recommend for gaming? these of the AKG K7XX?
I prefer the DT 990 Pro. Their ability to image (directionality) is more precise to me than on the K7XX. I feel like that is more important for FPS games than a marginal increase in soundstage.
@@chrono-headphonereviews242 wouldnt i notice that decrease in soundstage?
Ricardo Dias they’re still very close, and how important that is really varies per game. If you are playing open world games you might prefer a bigger soundstage because of its immersion. If you’re playing shooters I think imaging is significantly more important. I’ve personally had some cases where the soundstage being too wide is distracting in FPS.
@@chrono-headphonereviews242 the thing is that i own a pair of Sennheiser 599 for gaming
you think it would be worth it to get one of those two, or am i good as is?
Ricardo Dias sennheiser’s are not very good for gaming. They are amazing in music, but they’re soundstage is very narrow, and they’re imaging is not very precise
Is open or closed back headphones better for gaming?
Depends on the headphones, but generally I think you’ll get a better experience from open-backs.
Sir, can I use this headphone, with my gaming laptop, Lenovo legion 5, or on Xbox series X without any external amp?? Because it is 250ohm headphone.
Get an amp, you can use it but you won’t get it loud
how does "metallic" sound?
Can someone tell me whether these headphones have a mic?
They don’t have a mic. You need to either use a discrete desktop mic like a Blue Yeti, or you can attach a mod mic onto them.
Hey.. ifi hip dac is a good amp to drive 990 pro??? Pls reply as soon as possible. Thanks

These are incredible headphones for gaming and flight sims. I prefer my 770's (80 ohm) for piano and mixing. Not sure why people would use open cans for that since they're gaming greatness! Studio anything should be closed in my professional opinion.
please do the 80 ohm version
Go for the TYGR if you're worried about drivability.
this eq setting definitively have treble peak issues.
can someone tell me will I have any problems running those on creative sound blast Omni 5.1
I wish if someone reply to you because I have the same question!
This or the hd598 for the same price?
For music I’d personally go with the HD 598
@@chrono-headphonereviews242 forgot to add, i would use it mainly for gaming , so the DT990 is the better choice right?
Ginnity yeah
Is 80 ohms Surround sound ??
No, they’re stereo. However, their imaging is fantastic, which from my experience with them conveys a much better sense of position and directionality.
