The .73 Dunlop are my favorite picks, though I have recently been trying the .88 for a little extra stiffness, which makes me work a little harder and focus in on technique.... shifting slightly out of a comfort zone is the best thing for growth. Great lesson and video, brother. Thanks
This is fabulous stuff , and you explain it very well. Unfortunately some years ago (in a pub) I leant over to pick up a glass that was on the floor, I over leaned and my stool went over, cutting the thumb muscle and snapping the tendon to the thumb in my strumming hand , so no thumb bend/angle for me. I dearly love learning metal/rock guitar, and I am a learner , born again learner, but this thumb is holding me back so much more than I imagined. Still, I love learning songs, currently learning some Malcolm Young stuff, and with some degree of success ( small) I'm loving it so much. I watch so many of your videos, You are one of my top inspirations to beating this "non flexible" thumb, and I WILL get there, eventually. BTW My fave picks are the jazz 3 minis, just love 'em. Love what you do too bro, and many thanks for that. Just finishing off a Newcastle Brown before bed, so raising my last gulp to ya! Take care bro, many thanks again :) 👍👍👍☮☮☮🤘🤘🤘🍻🍻🍻

Gonna practice this. Have one tune i figured out that uses both. And it’s fast. Hatebreed - Into the Threshold. Can do it but trying to clean it up. Sometimes my picking has either not enough strokes or too many. It’s not consistent every time. Happens a few times every time i play it. Fun tune. Been playing for a little over a year now. Still learning and I am an old fart
Alternate picking is TOUGH! Great Lesson, man! One tip I could recomend is to practice with a metronome. Keeping in time and Increasing the speed gradually has been good practice in my experience.
Here’s something new I had fun with my personal riff called Motorcycle edition. I made my guitar sound so much like a Harley Davidson they thought it was one. Here’s how to play this I have a blast. You’ll need a delay setting either pedal or amp setting and Tweed setting which my amp has then in front of the Amp a swollen pickle pedal effects. I can do rev bombs. Third fret E&A strings only barre them 2 seconds to the fret then finger mute thumb picking at a medium tempo it will idle like a Harley. While finger muting the 2 strings gradually slide up the neck to the 21st-24 fret it will sound like Harley Idle speed around the parking lot then back to the 3rd fret like you went up the neck. Then split second mash the EA 3rd fret then lightning fast 20th fret mash a split second then all in one second back to 3rd fret. Back to finger mute idle. Then mash E&A 3rd fret thumb picking both strings aggressively then move up to 4-5 frets mashed down on frets then slide down to 21-24 fret to rev up and take off changing gears ⚙️ 3 times then to adjust the throttle move back to 19th fret 20th fret 16th fret to make throttle change sound then back to 3rd lifting to finger mute to bring the motorcycle back to an idle. TURN a electric guitar into DEAFENING LOUD STRAIGHT PIPES. This is DEFINITELY KEEPING IT METAL. This is a fun idea for guitar is Harley edition. I was playing this while I watched your galloping lesson.
I started playing on the beginning of the pandemic. 6months in I started to alternate picking but I had a dunlop .66 and it kind of bend and get stucked in the string. Then I buyed a ernie ball .88 and it had a HUGE difference. Much faster and precise. Maybe I will try a 1.0 on the future
Dude this video is awesome!! Between me and aka BudCanMan watched multiple times already today (and not done yet lol) and i have to say that all of your other lessons and M.R.M. course I have watched, to me made this lesson easier to combine the Downstrokes to Alternate Picking vice versa, i actually see feel and hear my progress and didn't feel like the beginner i was not so long ago. thinner picks 'snap' past the string in a way thicker ones don't; modern thicc picks have beveled edges to let them 'slip' past, now. Before, when I played bass with a pick, I loved thinner/medium ones for alternate picking. People liked to call the Dunlop 2.0mm and 3.0mm Stubbies 'bass picks' due to their size, but a medium or lighter just clicks past the fatter strings and I played faster/snappier. And it gives a sharper attack tone, imo. Clayton mediums for the win :D
