- One of the challenges for metal guitarists is combining riffs with power chords. So I'm giving you 3 lessons with different power chord progressions and riffs to practice!
**** Here's the link to the Metal Riff Master guitar course I mentioned in the video: metalmastermin...
Oh, and hang around for the end of the video for some Tone Talk!! I've got a question and would like your opinion and see what you're using!!!

Thank you for the video! Very useful!
Metal lesson with a burning candle in the background... Love it.
🤘
You have a tendency to do the exact tutorial I'm looking for. You're seriously the best guitar teacher on RUclips.
I'm using a 7 string Jackson with passive pickups. The amp I'm using is the Line 6 Spider V MK2. I downloaded a Megadeth tone to my amp. Volume at 2, gain at 7, mid 5, treble 6. I'm very new at playing guitar. Metal is what I play almost exclusively I also like blues scales.
That's great to hear!! And thank you, I really appreciate that
I'd love to play a Jackson 7 string again (played one a long time ago!)
This definitely helped. Could you explain where the scales are coming from to make these riffs? I’m learning in drop D and some of those patterns look like they’re derived from the minor scale. The 3rd riff I’m not totally sure on. My big thing I want to learn is improvisation so like, figuring out which scales or fragments can go together
Brother, I never think about scales when I'm writing. The sound is in my head and I translate that to the fretboard. This allows you to try new things, even things that don't seemingly fit can sometimes turn out to be amazing. I'll be talking more about that in the video I posted tomorrow on Evil Metal Riffs (Part 1)
You teach well bro, any chance you can do burzum rifs made easy, plz
Thank you. Dude, I've never heard of burzum!
If I can handle the 3rd riff, I'm I at the level for your metal riff master? Even if I only played for 4 months? I wanna do it since I enjoyed the 30days of metal so much, and learned TONNS too! But it might be too advanced since you recommend it for at least 6months to 1 year experienced players.
And to you question: I bought an used Vester Concert Series, Korea made from the 80s, came with one active DiMarzio humbucker at the bridge and two single pickups, pickups are branded Vester but made by EMG. 90% of the time I play on the DiMarzio Humbucker, and I play everything you teach!
You would do fine during the first couple of lesson modules but you would catch on to the others. The thing is this is the final week of my launch sale (goes to normal price at the end of this week).
So grab it now. You'll always have access to it once your buy it: metalmastermind.com/metal-riff-master/
I'm absolutely blown away by your content. It's exactly what I need, all the facts, none of the fluff.
Your teaching style is so down to earth. My favourite guitar lesson channel by far.
Thanks for everything you do.
Thank you, I appreciate that! I just put out a similar video on leads that's great to play along and practice with: ruclips.net/video/82jt-RdjL-s/видео.html
I use Active and Passive, most of my pickups are passive and I recently purchased a set of Seymour Duncan Invaders and they are total Beasts. I have been a Solid state Guy since the early 90s and I don't use Randall like Dime and I don't try to sound Like Dime. But I will Own a Mesa Dual Recto one day just because I want one. I have used my Crate gx130c since 1995 with Celestian Loaded 4-12 slant Cab and it's the best Cab i have ever played thru and I have played thru many Cabs including Mesa Boogie Recto Cabs. I am now Using a Boss KatanaMK2 212 combo and it is Loud and can hang with any Half Stack and drums and Bass, just gotta know what your doing, i run clean channel and produce all my distortions thru pedals, Eqs and other secrets. bring on the shit talk Fellas I been playing for over 30 years
Nice, dude. And I don't think you'll get any sh&t talk out of my subscribers here. We're all a bunch of cool laid back folks that just love metal! Got some great people on here, so welcome!
The Boss Katana is definitely a cool amp! I was using something similar for a while, the Fender Mustang IV 2x12. Got some really nice tones out of that!
I love that power chord sound! I'd rather watch you bro ( so calm and real) than a friend of mine that starts yelling, shredding like a maniac without actually teaching me diddly squat!
He's the "I'm better than u" kind 😂
All jokingly 😁😁😁
Thank you for that brother!
I am debating on putting a combination of Hetfields and Hammetts pickups in my LTD-V50. Probably Hets on the neck and Hammetts on the bridge.
I’ve never played through those but I’m sure that will sound awesome!
Anybody else hear poison's "talk dirty to me"?
Lol...I heard it after I published the video!! lol
By the way, you may have this already but if not, make sure you grab my free practice guide: www.jasonstallworth.com/guitarist/
Hi guys! I have a set of EMG actives in one of my guitars. I thought I'd heard somewhere that active pups are really only a good option if you have a tube amp to play them through? At the moment I'm just playing a 30watt Roland solid state.
Dude I had heard that many years ago as well. I'm playing my Ibanez RG a lot more lately through my EVH EL34 tube amp and sometimes I like that sound better than my ESP with active pickups.
Sometimes with passive pickups you may want to crank the gain a little and may not need your noise gate turned up as much. That's something I've noticed because of the lower output.
I use stock Ibanez quantum pickups. I tried some SD’s and didn’t like them. Jason do you play with jumbo frets?
I bet those sound great, too! I do like jumbo frets! My LTD M1000 Deluxe has extra jumbo and those are really nice to play
Cool lesson jason👍🏻, I'm a passive pickup guy... My explorer is loaded with the George lynch screaming demon... Only have 1 guitar with the lower end active pickup (emg-z) want to get the Gary Holt emg set if I can at some point .... 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻 Thrash metal all the way for me.
Dude those Lynch pickups are awesome!!!
This stuff makes me feel 35 again...id be like lets go to the basement and make some killa tunes...any frontman with a brain ..sees this guys as a platoon builders dream.....Good Timez.!
Thank you brother! Yeah, playing metal helps us keep our youth!!
By the way I am messing with passive and active pickups. Two guitars are EMGs. The other is a Schecter with their own passive pickup.
Sometimes guitar companies make pretty decent pickups (well, I guess someone else makes them and they brand it!) - but Ibanez is another example. I really like my RG1570's passive stock pickups, the V7, V8 and S1.
Yo man i can't wait to get home and watch this thru! Only caught half of it on lunch now. Oh and my elixer stings just got delivered this morning and cant wait to get them on this evening 🤘😁👍thank you jason!!
Dude, I really think you'll like the Elixirs! The coated strings may feel a little strange at first but you'll quickly get used to them!
One step forward two steps back wax indeed Paula Abdul. Opposites Attract
I'm almost embarrassed I know that 😂
Lol...I probably listened to it as many times as you along with Tiffany!
@@jasonstallworth To be fair it had a cool video for the time.
Ah..... Tiffany. I wonder if Leo at Frogleap has done a metal cover of I Think We're Alone Now 🤔😀
Sir, could you make a tutorial video? Asking alexandria guitar lesson please🙏
I teach methods on here and stick to original music, but learning through my videos will help you learn other songs easier
I still remember you got 10k subs.came here after sometimes now 25k.this should be a 500k channels .
Brother it took 10 years to hit 10k, from June 2010 to June 2020! And for some reason the channel started taking off after that as I hit 20k 7 months later! So I’m extremely grateful!
Another great lesson. To answer the question I use both styles of pickups. Mostly use my ltd with active EMG 80 / 60. I run a 100 watt Combo Marshall which my neighbors don't appreciate. Question.. what is your feelings on kill pots? Have you ever ran one?
Love those LTD EMGs! But yeah, it's good to have both!
I've never used kill pots dude. I actually had to look that up!
You remind me of Farron cousins but like a cooler metal version of him anyway your both cool cats keep on rockin
🤘
Got a Subscriber! Thank you! Just wanted to add the second riff… when you slow it down …sounds like the intro song to the TV show Doogie Houser lol!! Listen you’ll hear it.
🤘😎🎸
Thank you for the sub!!! Lol, used to love some Doogie!
Oh dude, if you didn't get it yet, download my practice guide that I give my subs: www.jasonstallworth.com/guitarist/
@@jasonstallworth yeah downloaded it and printed two copies. Im using one and give the other one to my two sons that play too. Its going well. Thank you again for all you do. Wish I discovered you while back instead of now.
🤘😎🎸
Can you please teach the guitar slide you do at the beginning of your playing? It is really cool!
I've got a video on that here: ruclips.net/user/shortsZOXf7L69pM0
Grabbed a case white claws and my guitar! Been at it for two days.
🤘
Another quality lesson emphasizing the importance of finger dexterity and Independence....as far as pickups, I have a few guitars with active (EMG 81+60 set, as well as 81+85 set), but the majority of my guitars have passive pups. I tend to prefer the overall versatility of passive pups more, but it's good to have at least one guitar with active pups for the added "hot sauce on the chicken wings" thing! I've tried several different brands of aftermarket pups (Wilkinson, DiMarzio, Seymour Duncan, Dragonfire, Guitarheads) as well as adjusting slug height (flathead or hex head) and pickup height on stock pups with impressive results. I tend to prefer Alnico V PAF style pups for their punchy warmth and clarity. But I must also mention that you can achieve absolutely amazing results in tonal structure by simply upgrading your potentiometers and capacitors!
Dude I never thought about updating the items on the last line you mentioned! But yeah there’s something about the passive pickups that give you more versatility!
Currently I use a DBZ Diamond Cavallo V guitar with stock DBZ pickups. (I love V guitars in general). I also have a cheap ~80$ strat copy and i swapped the bridge single coil out to some cheap chinese hot rail singlebucker. It has a surprisingly decent tone. I usually play all kinds of metal in Standard E or Drop D, but i think the style I love the most is symphonic power metal like early Nightwish, but I generally like any female fronted bands from psychobilly to metalcore and everything in between :)
Dude, I LOVE Nightwish!!! Arch Enemy and Battle Beast are some other female-fronted metal bands I like!
@@jasonstallworth I like Arch Enemy, too. Unleash The Archers is another one worth mentioning. That vocal range and terrific fast riffs on guitar are amazing.
@@spyware1100 A friend turned me on to Unleash a couple of years ago!
Jason is just a Metal Guitar machine; he can’t stop. Crazy how many good lessons you’re able to create almost daily.
Thank you 🙏🏻 I really just try to put stuff out there that will help everyone get better!
@@jasonstallworth well you’ve certainly helped me improve. Good metal instructors like you are few and far between since Metal is a pretty niche genre to begin with.
@@fernandoantoniomusic8712 🤘
He sure is the coolest guy ever. I just wished I could've learned this stuff when I was20 and not 58. But oh well, I'm a metal maniac from the git go,hehe.😉
Great lesson Jason. Love this stuff. I'm currently practicing with my30w tube head and 30w cab. My guitar is a Ibanez with stock passive pickups. I have a couple other guitars with active pickups and they're great too. Each one has its own place in music, and I love both.😉
It's good to have both!! It just gives you more options!
can you do a tutorialss on string skipping? especially fast ones.
Yep, video 29 in my 30 Days of Metal Riffs series here: ruclips.net/video/F3Ekcpbf_Vo/видео.html
I like and use both active and passive pickups. EMG 81 and Seymour Duncan Distortion are my favorites. If I had to pick one, I'd go with the EMG. I play 80's and 90's metal and 90's Death Metal.
Yeah it's perfect for those styles and I have the EMGs on my LTD M1000 Deluxe (that's on a lot of my RUclips videos)
Great lessons! Just a quick question.. what chords are you using for the second riff? And any advice on the strumming pattern?
What drum program are you using ? Drum loop etc
EZ Drummer and I have the Metal Machine pack. I don't do any programming, just throw in whatever loops are available. It's great for videos like this and writing the initial song ideas.
This is the exact concept I was looking for, so crazy u recently uploaded it. Haha. Thank you man. Subbed 🤟🎸
Dude, that's awesome to hear, and thank you for the sub!!
By the way, if you didn't grab my free practice guide that I give all of my subs, you can get it here: www.jasonstallworth.com/guitarist/
Just found your channel and watched your video on how to begin at playing a seven string, and it was a completely new way of teaching. Watching this now to get comfortable with playing a seven string like it's a six string FIRST. And man, just a few minutes in and I feel like I'm rocking more than I ever had before. I can make it my own. You're an awesome teacher and I will be binging your videos, keep it up brother
Welcome to the channel and thank you for true support!
Dude I also have a metal guitar course I recently launched if you’re interested: metalmastermind.com/metal-riff-master/
I have an les paul copy and a fender Stratocaster
🤘
I'm an old three notes per string scale guy so a lot of your riffs are second nature to me. That method of playing is so easy it's just seven easy shapes that you can combine up and down the fretboard to always be in key.
Always being in key is the key! lol
Jason... just pumping out these lessons. Good stuff my man...
Awesome brother!! Between the course and these lessons, you'll be busy!
Excellent Thanks Brother!
You're welcome!
I cant wait to get home and play my jackson j32q my first Floyd rose. Your a awesome teacher bud ! 49 year old beginner and your video help me riff I lot quicker making it more fun .but this guitar addiction is killing my wallet .up to 5 .lol
Lol yeah dude, it's not the cheapest passion!! And it's great to hear you're just starting out because that's such an exciting time and you'll be amazed at how fast you progress!
Also, I think you have this but if not, grab my free practice guide here: www.jasonstallworth.com/guitarist/
@@jasonstallworth hey bud I tried the link for the practice routine and studio pdf .only the studio one is showing up in my email.
Catching this video a bit after it's original post but thought I would share anyway. I have a Jackson Monarq with two high output humbuckers which scream I use a blackstar amp which is sufficient but i would prefer something that allows me to have an effects loop so I can start working on my own tone
I'm using this Blackstar amp now and it's great for adding effects: ruclips.net/video/0makwiJmmGY/видео.html

Also how long will your new course be available at the 47.00 dollar price i want to purchase it next Tuesday before it goes up thank you sir
Yeah, dude, these should be really fun practice patterns! The 3rd one is a bit more complex, but you'll nail it!
@@jamessaunier7620 Probably another 10-14 days brother!
ahh... lemme get my guitar...
Yes, go grab it!!
25k subs, congrats, Jason!
Thank you!!!
I use both active and passive pickups. My Eclipse has EMG 81/60s installed. I have another offbrand guitar that I've heavily modified. Right now it has a single Super Distortion pickup but I'm considering changing to something else. It depends on the song as to which one I prefer. I'm considering double-tracking the rhythm parts on my own songs using both guitars.
It's definitely preferable to have both options!
Absolutely awesome ❤❤❤❤
🙏🏻🤘
🤘
Fun riffs! I was having fun learning these. I like to open up my DAW and create a bunch of tempo tracks, start at 120 then move up 10 until I start to struggle. I got to about 180 on the third riff before I started tripping over my fingers a bit. Sounds brutal/old school.
Awesome man and I encourage you to expand on this!
Do you not need 3 fingers?
You can definitely add that 3rd note in there. There are no rules. I always encourage folks to play what sounds best to them. Even better, go back and forth on that for certain parts of riffs and songs you're writing.
Jason im new to your videos and line them a lot ! Maybe a suggestion ... it would be nice if you talked a bit more about the theory behind the riffs ... for example: when you’re on the D power chord you can use D minor scale for the riff or whatever
👍
Thank you, and I'd love to do more theory but I never really got deep into it! After I learned the basic chords, I went off on my own and just played by ear and feeling. Theory is definitely good to learn, though!
Man it's so nice hearing you say to develop our own style. Most I've tried talking to or studying with want you to worship their way as the only way. SKAL bro 🤘🤘
Yeah man, I’m huge on that!! We all have our own unique abilities!
I'm late to the party but I really enjoy your lessons. I picked up the guitar again after 30 years. You make it fun. Metal on !!!
Great to hear you picked it back up!
Im 8 months into guitar.. Was kind of in limbo for awhile your videos are really helping me break through
Dude, that's awesome to hear!
Also, if you don't have it yet make sure you grab my practice guide that I give my subs: www.jasonstallworth.com/guitarist/
@@jasonstallworth thanks...keep Rock'n brother
That was a lot of fun! Thanks for the lesson. Riff 3 was pretty challenging, actually - both in terms of having to navigate a bit more of the neck and skipping strings, as well as rhythmically. These are five triplets, right, with the last note ringing out a bit to fill the bar?
Yeah the string skipping can definitely be challenging! And I believe that’s 5x at the end but one of the things I encourage is to play it in a way that you think sounds better and fits your style, naturally! You’ll come up with some cool stuff!
Helped me so much man!!

I love you are talking about meshing single notes with chords. I started playing more seriously a little over a year ago. In the past I did no single string notes. Over twenty years ago. I am working on my third tune off Metallica’s Black Album and i feel like I have improved immensely since learning these tunes. I am doing things I didn’t think I could do.
Dude, I love Metallica riffs! That's what got me started back in 1989!! Puppets and Justice! And the Black album has some really awesome riffs!! Kirk does some great soloing in that album as well!
Really glad to hear you're making progress!
Nice Job

@@jasonstallworth hey also thank you a lot for sending the free Metal riffs and licks, playing around with this really helps me so much. Please keep it up !
Absolutely awesome lesson!
Thank you, dude, glad you enjoyed this!!!
@@jasonstallworth also I use passive pickups, I haven’t ever played with active pickups before so I really couldn’t tell you which I prefer but from what I hear it sounds like like actives might be a little over kill in some situations and they are way more expensive than passive pickups in most cases, but I would have to actually use both before I make a real decision.
@@x_metal3352 They could be overkill for some situations, for sure! I do have active EMGs in my ESP guitars. But I tend to gravitate to my Ibanez with passives more these days.
@@jasonstallworth thanks for the insight 👍👊

Killer lesson and riffs to learn from.
Yeah dude these are some fun riffs...especially the 3rd and final one!
@@jasonstallworth I really liked the second one the best, but the rest were excellent and in the actual genre that you intended. That’s rare from what I’ve seen lately elsewhere.
Also after watching again I forgot to answer the question about active vs passive PUP’s and for me it’s passive. Active PUPS’s have a great tone, but they sound a bit sterile at times to me. That said, if someone hands me an ESP with EMGs, I would never turn it down. LOL.
Love the channel sir. Hope you have a blessed day and and a great week.
