Guitarists Shred the Metallica Riffs That Made Them

  • There's no doubt Metallica have inspired countless musicians to pick up a guitar and start a band.
Through many, many episodes of Gear Factor, we've heard shredder after shredder say the same thing. The first song they learned? The band that made them want to play in the first place? Their favorite riffs? The mighty Metallica, of course.
That's why we decided to revisit a multitude of players, from Ghost's Tobias Forge to GWAR's Pustulus Maximus, gushing about the Metallica riffs that inspired them to learn to play and even want to start a band in the first place.
Formed in Los Angeles, in 1981, before relocating to San Francisco two years later, Metallica helped both spearhead and define the thrash metal genre. In the ‘90s, they embraced more accessible sounds and new compositional styles that took them to new heights.
One song that many guitarist say they first learned is "Seek and Destroy" from 1983's Kill 'Em All. And, of course, you'll hear a lot of "Master of Puppets" from their 1986 album of the same name and, perhaps their most well-known song, "Enter Sandman" from their eponymous 1991 album. If you're new, Subscribe! → bit.ly/subscrib...

It's amazing how many riffs are played wrong in this video. That's not a criticism, but rather a product of how learning songs used to be in the 80's and 90's. We either had to learn by ear, or hope that they would publish a tab book (which was usually completely wrong). Not that there isn't misinformation out there, but it is infinitely easier to learn songs now, though I think the struggle to figure things made us all better.

I went to a party and there was this kid playing Metallica I sat down and listened for an hour, next day got a guitar and learned nothing but Metallica stuff for a Year (maybe some Deep Purple Sabbath too) because i was hooked on metallica and the idea i could do that too.

"Seek and Destroy" was to a generation of metalhead guitarists, what "Smoke on the Water" was to a generation of hard rocker guitar players.

Ol Drake just got it right, the moment when you become fully aware that you can use your pinky finger to play guitar just as any other finger, i felt that to the core 😂

Funny how everyone said it was Metallica songs that got them wanting to play guitar. My Dad was why I got into guitar, bc he played and I wanted to play with him when I was 7. He would try to show me something easy but cool, I would get it down a bit, then we'd go into the kitchen and play for whoever was over drinking coffee and eating cake. Things like, "Walk don't Run, Earth Angel, that generic blues run, wipe out, house of the rising sun, Day Tripper. Good times.

An underrated Metallica riff is a favorite of mine, the beginning of Disposable Heroes. I imagine a UFC fighter coming out to the ring to that riff.
