Today, Christian dives into three of Rolex's most hotly desired precious metal sport models!
Traditionally, Rolexes came in one of two formats - the precious metal, dressy pieces that are most at home in the office, and the steel sport models that were designed to be used as tools. That all changed with the reference 1680, a Submariner in yellow gold. However, this shift towards a visual more resembling "richness" than "toolishness" has stuck with the brand since.
First up, we have the new Everose GMT Master II "Root Beer." Technically, the watch is not a direct follow up to the original Root Beer GMT as we've come to know it -- the colors are certainly darker and less pronounced, the the original was never produced in pink/rose gold. However, the DNA of using brown on a precious metal GMT is apparent.
Next up, we have the Rolex Smurf, a white gold Submariner with a blue dial and ceramic bezel. Introduced in 2008, the watch is absolute stealth wealth in every considerable way. The metal is technically referred to as "grey gold," rather than white gold, and it's a difficult difference to quantify unless you get a chance to see it in person.
Finally, we have the yellow gold Submariner Date, a similar enough watch in principle that somehow manages to stand out even more than the other watches on this list because of the inherently blingy nature of yellow gold. What's funny, though, is the fact that this watch is also the cheapest of the three on the list (not to say it's cheap, of course, at $35k or so).
The funny thing with these precious metal Rolex watches is that the pictures never get the full effect out. The color and the way they reflect light can be seen best in person, especially on the grey gold.
The GMTII in Everose is a stunning watch in person. It holds the middle ground beautifully between the bling of yellow gold and the popularity of steel. The Everose is not a daily driver. At night or paired with black, brown or darker tones is when the watch really shines. Thank you for this well-done review.

Interesting, I prefer the two tone rootbeer, and I generally do not like any two tone. The TT rootbeer is stunning.

I’ve never been a fan of precious metal sports watches BUT the GMT-Master in Everose is one of the most beautiful watches I’ve ever seen in the metal. I’ve seen a few at ADs recently but I’m waiting for the TT. I’ve never liked Two-tone watches until the Rootbeer.

I've never been a fan of two tones either. The two tone Root Beer looks good but I just picked up the full Everose GMT root Beer and I am in love with it.

The reason it's called "grey gold" is to distinguish it from "white gold" in that it's an actual alloy of rhodium and gold, the rhodium isn't just plated on like it is with white gold, this way when the watch inevitably is scratched you never have to worry about having it replated, it's the same color throughout the metal. It has nothing to do with there being a difference in color between it and white gold, it distinguishes the way it's made.
I had the opportunity to try a smurf at my local AD, I was very impressed! The blue is absolutely gorgeous, such a beauty !!

I just picked pop the Root Beer, was thinking of getting an all gold black face and bezel Sub but Im leaning towards the all black all gold GMT II. A Pepsi in white gold would be a nice way to finish the trio.
The white gold Pepsi is a stunner. I have the full rose root beer, and a stainless ceramic Pepsi, but wanting to swap for a blue face white gold model because it is a gorgeous watch
the new version of the "Smurf" that sort of vibes a bit of the GMT Bat Man, .... black dial and blue bezel is truly the one to go for in the Submariner line.... and then of course, there's that Rose Gold GMT II... wow.. I'd be so torn between the 126619LB and the 126715CHNR! TORN!
The yellow gold sub & root beer says: "I'm a gangster."

@@marcwareham9351 of the three, I'd say the Smurf is more incognito than the other two. The Root Beer is an excellent piece, but it's not without some serious flash. It pops in person.

The Chocolate Everrose GMT is an absolutely stunner in nature.
I would choose that one above the yellow and white gold.

Chris, one question. The matte dial on the blue rolex ( two tone or gold ) is not reserve for the white gold only is it?
I have a two tobe sub and i have the matte dial... its more rare than the normal shinny blue, and a lot better looking.
I agree that the blue Matt Dial looks better (& much rarer) than the Sunburst - I’ve just bought a 2009 unworn partially stickered ‘Bluesy’ Rolesor & it’s 🤩

There is one that does beat it. It is the Daytona Everose Gold with Choco dial.
@@djjr9803 the GMT Everose Root beer goes everywhere for all occasions. It can flash on a suit or passes incognito in different occasions. The Daytona Everose is a great stunning watch. Unfortunately it flashes everywhere. Everyone has his taste 🙂
Don't disagree with your love for the Everose Rootbeer but the Chocodial of the Everose Daytona makes it relatively subdued. The bling comes a bit from the everose gold bezel

The 116619 is the one, you can wear it anywhere and very few people will know what it is. The 116618 is gorgeous but it draws too much unwanted attention..
Are Rolex movements better than ETA or outher manufacturer,s ,I just don't see the value ?
Ever heard of a silicon hairspring, anti-magnetism, COSC certification? ETA is a mass production movement that sells to masses, Rolex makes their own parts. Are Rolex movements better than other manufacturers? There are watch makers that make a better movement. Depends on who you’re talking about. That said, Rolex are incredibly resilient and accurate. Not necessarily something to be displayed though.

Frankly, Rolex is really the only watch that matters to most people. High quality. Dependable. Wearable. Value retention. APs are for ladyboi chasers and are fragile. Patek is great, but far less recognizable and far harder to sell if you need to. Omega makes a fine PO, but let’s face it-no one really cares.
