Just picked up a 20-year old gold Rolex on an Oyster bracelet. No stretch whatsoever. I think it's only really an issue on the President bracelet and gold Jubilees. But it's nice to see the ceramic sleeves included in the gold oyster bracelets (though not sure that they are doing much).
Bracelet stretch is almost exclusively caused by the links wearing down the pins, not the other way around. These ceramic sleeves protect the pins, not the links.
Another great video. Totally agree 100% with white gold flying under the radar. Vintage 36mm day date, white gold, stick indices makes my Mt. Rushmore of grail watches.
Great stuff man. As usual great argument and shooting style. “Because I can” is the logical answer to most not-so-common or in-your-face items and actions Keep up the good work!!
Great showcase and agreed -- you'd be crazy to pass it up. Personally, this piece just doesn't resonate. Soft gold, the high-profile of Rolex, a plain solid dial, or even dive watches as a style just don't suit me. But for somebody else it's perfect. To them I say shine on, you crazy diamond.
I disagree. People do buy a Rolex to show off. They are flashy by nature. The brand itself is synonym for wealth. You can't escape it. And ALL of their offerings are overpriced whether retail or not. That is not an emotional statement. It's a fact. I know this because you can buy a Tudor that achieves the exact same purpose for a LOT less. When people buy Rolex, they are buying the brand first and foremost. That's fine. Nothing wrong with that. But it annoys me that people who own them downplay the fact that having "Rolex" written on the dial is the MAIN attractor in these watches. Would people pay 10,000 for a Submariner produced by Rolex but without the word Rolex printed on the dial? I think MANY costumers would walk away instantly. I still loved your video. I have tried to step away from watching anything Rolex related because I despise contributing to their hype. But I appreciate your opinion and takes. Great channel. Keep up the good work.
I bought my first Rolex 12 years ago, an Explorer 114270. Honestly, it took me a few years of wearing the watch in rotation before I really started to appreciate the attributes that make Rolex stand out from other brands. I currently have 3 Rolex in my collection. I bought my Hulk at a discount back when nobody wanted them because I thought it was a fantastic watch on it's own merits. I had no idea at the time that the value would explode nor do I care now that it has. The name Rolex, to me, is a sign that a watch is well designed, comfortable, robust and accurate. I could not care less about the hype and market value except as far as it prevents me from adding other Rolex models I'd like to add to my collection.
Beautiful. Still prefer the blue dial Smurf over the black dial. There’s something special about that flat cool blue color, while the black dial just looks pedestrian.
Great video! I thought the outro was great. Was he congratulating you on a great video or warning you of the inevitable Rolex hate you will receive in the comments? While the Rolex is not for my bank account, it is a very nice classic watch. The blue and black look great.

Nice video! I REALLY like this sub and when I think about potentially getting a full precios medal watch I always tend to lean toward the white gold for the same reason you stated. It’s for the wearer not the onlooker. I like that normal people will think it is a steal watch but to me I know what it is and to the special few that KNOW will really appreciate! I also think steal and white gold look best on me. You also get the benefit of laying under the radar for thiefs that are just looking for that GOLD. Beautiful shot of the watch and I like the side by side of the BLNR to compare the blues. VERY SIMILAR. Great content
the black dial / blue bezel combo on a sub (granted it’s extremely similar to a batman) is absolutely gorgeous. if they ever make this model in stainless steel one day, i think it’ll go bananas much like the hulk
Thank you for your unbiased review and yes the submariner is really a gold! The price of it is really over the top but worth it I guess. Thanks for this great review video. More videos to come! 👏👌
Why not? Not much of the watch industry, especially haute horology, is about practicality. Btw, I'm not calling a Sub haute horology, but I think the same holds true.
Amazing review like always! I really like your blue shirt, if you have time can you tell me what brand it is? Thanks you for the great entertainment anyway:)
Yeah, I wouldn't buy it, but good on the guy who got it if that's what he wanted. I turned down a no date regular Sub last year. Never asked for it, never showed interest in it, Subs just don't do it for me. I understand, as a watch collector, I'm in the minority with that opinion. I'm ok with that.
3:24 "My guess is that each of those sleeves cost more than most of the watches in the world" - I'm sorry, but that just made anyone involved in engineering or manufacturing who listens to this either spill their coffee, or getting ready to sell ceramic sleeves to gullible watch enthusiasts. Those are literally cent parts, bought in bags of thousands for a couple dollars, used in all kinds of machinery where a (more expensive) proper bearing is either cost-prohibitive, too large, or facing adverse conditions - little water-pumps for example. The actually more expensive bit may be machining the links. If they're truly fancy, they end-mill them to a defined depth, so they only go in/out one way - I suppose they simply use a larger through-hole and leave them supported only by the bolts and outter links - which will work totally fine). Nothing at all your existing machinery couldn't handle, but obviously more machine time=cost. Which I very strongly presume is best expressed in cents per link.
Nice, honest review. $40 grand for a Sub??? If you're making more money in a month that most of us make in a year...it's your money, do what you want with it! If I had that kind of $$$$$$$$$$, there are a couple of IWC's and Breitlings that I could afford and still have $$$$$ leftover! And if you really want to know...since I am 6'6"....any thing below a 46 mm watch looks like a child's watch on my 23cm wrist ( that's basically a 9 inch wrist ). But...to each his own.
I like this review. I tried a Smurf in Boston and the guy said I could get it for $24000, if only? I now realise that was a 'bargain' I must admit I was concerned at the sheer weight, but that wasn't an issue as the most valuable wacthI have ever owned was approx £1200. I like the colurway, but the polished centre links are a touch bling for me.
It's good for Rolex guys to wear a heavy watch on their left wrist giving that side some workout to balance out the difference in their arm musculature.
in all honesty .. this is a sort of "Holy Grail" of all modern day Subs... the only thing better would be if they made a Platinum one. And btw, not $40,000 .. $40650 ;)
Great video as always! I agree with your thoughts, it's not for me but it's definitely for someone who specifically wants that watch for what it is. Rolex really does make great sports watches, I've come around on this point, and some of their hype is deserved. I think in the coming months the 2nd hand market will see a significant correction and hopefully those that truly want these watches to wear and love can actually own them (and maybe even pay retail for them new haha).
The price of Rolex now and the hype, meh, I'm done with Rolex... I used to love the brand, have an OP and an Explorer, but now I just find Rolex exhausting and the people that focus on the brand tedious, one dimensional and boring. The sub is absolutely not the principle of dive watches lol...it's not even close to being so. Same with all of the Rolex models, they are nice, but you're kidding yourself if you think Rolex are the pinnacle in any category.
I don't blame Rolex (much) for the situation. I respect them for not short-sightedly trying to desperately increase production to chase demand. I just hope the people who bend over backwards (at least I hope it's only that way...) and go through the ridiculous circus and cost to get a Rolex don't expect people to revere them for having that thing on their wrist. I'm happy for them if they're happy, but the reputation of Rolex wearers at least in my mind is gullible fools (to put it mildly) who have grovelled and been through a totally undignified hazing BEGGING to get that thing. People don't usually look up to people who grovel, beg and dance for others. I get that they think it's worth it to get a nice watch and the resale value backs it up in a way...but not in the luxury or watch excellence sense. It's not luxury to have to dance and beg for the chance to buy a watch. I think of it more like obsessed base ball card or model train enthusiasts hunting down some rare piece which will be revered by a handful of people in their community of enthusiasts. It will have that actual high monetary value. But not as a fine object, and not as luxury. Not as fine watchmaking. Only as scarcity...and that can bring negative image. Even worse is the fools who buy them at massively inflated prices in the grey market!
Hand in hand I think my omega seamster is higher quality than my Rolex OP just visually looking at the level of finishing but the Rolex is designed better in the fact the the bracelet is better the watch is better balanced on wrist and more comfortable
@@pistonburner6448 buddy I appreciate your sentiments but please don’t think that everyone who is fortunate enough to buy rolex at retail has to grovel or beg or otherwise demean themselves. My ad is a very good friend of mine - watches are one of the things we have in common and I am supplied a steady stream of all the watches one could want from rolex. Absolutely nothing undignified about this - just an organic friendship which started outside of watches and transgressed into me being sold watches. I appreciate I am lucky and that for many this is not the case but I think it’s always best to stay away from sweeping generalisations
@@Watchlover371 Well, that strengthens my message a lot: maybe you really are friends, but many others are 'friends' with their ad. And in either case the key to that 'friendship' is constantly giving the ad lots of money, and that long and very expensive process is how anyone is in the situation that they can buy Rolexes. The cost you have to go through to buy a Submariner is not the price of one Submariner but instead it's years of spending, tens of thousands to be able to have access. Generalisations work really well when they are totally in lock step with reality, and I am sure mine is totally accurate. Generalisations can be true like this one was, despite one single anecdote like yours. It was actually probably strengthened by it since you yourself prove that your situation is very unique and others don't have such an arrangement. I'm really glad that you as a Rolex fan are able to buy the timepieces you wish to buy from an official dealer! It would really be unfortunate for a Rolex fan to have to consider grey market, or have to be without. And I say 'Rolex fan' as you probably are such, though the same applies to most watch fans in general since Rolexes are such amazing products and the company is so respectable in its integrity of watchmaking and product strategy that the overwhelming majority loves their products and what they do. As I've said here and elsewhere, I have no beef with the company. Massive demand created the situation and there is no better reaction I can think of (other than them tackling the alleged corruption leading to grey dealer sales or assuaging the suspicions of that being widespread and not reacted to enough), it's just unfortunate that everyone can't get what they want every single time they want it...some people just are a bit spoiled with their expectations. And life is sometimes about achieved privilege. I haven't criticised Rolex about the supply issue, I merely like to point out how the situation really is like it is, and therefore people talking about Rolexes as if almost anyone could buy them seems a bit strange. Like: when people just compare a Rolex to some other watch, I think it's a good idea to just tell people that they won't be able to buy one so the whole issue is theoretic. We can still appreciate how amazing Rolexes are, and still make the comparison, but when talking pricing or market comparison it's just as essential as is the crazy resale value if you do get your hands on one! It matters.
a rolex looks good on someone whos using it and needs it. 10% of the people who wear a Rolex suit the watch.. No amount of color matching a sweater with the watch is going to change that. Nobody taking your money is gonna tell you that but its true man. Buying a Rolex does not turn you into James Bond in most cases it does the opposite.
I was going to buy a “cookie monster”, but seeing it alongside the “Batman” in this video has actually changed my mind. The cost differential is too much, as well as the cost of insurance. I have just ordered a Batman from Chrono24 to add to my (small) Rolex collection.

Great video and commentary!
Great review. Appreciated.
It's good for Rolex guys to wear a heavy watch on their left wrist giving that side some workout to balance out the difference in their arm musculature.
You might develop gunslingers walk but for your watch
in all honesty .. this is a sort of "Holy Grail" of all modern day Subs... the only thing better would be if they made a Platinum one.
I match my Rolex to my green dinosaur socks because I work with kids and don’t wear shoes
I was going to buy a “cookie monster”, but seeing it alongside the “Batman” in this video has actually changed my mind. The cost differential is too much, as well as the cost of insurance. I have just ordered a Batman from Chrono24 to add to my (small) Rolex collection.
No swearing but still love it 👍🏻👍🏻 Awesome review 👍🏻👍🏻
I knew I was forgetting something!
1:49 Dude, if you can afford a 10k watch, you've made it. At least from a perspective of 99% of the world.
