Jody have introduced another personality to buy watches and hide the funding sources of his new watch company. He even hired an actor to pretend to be "Mr P" . It's ok Jody, we won't tell your wife.
No date 'cause the cyclops is ugly, and is a Rolex giveaway. If I'm having a Rolex I want to appreciate it's watchness, not it's Rolexness. Yes, they are made up words.
I actually bought myself a maxi case sub date recently and here’s why; 40mm case and it has the 3135. Sure, it only has 48 hours power reserve, but the way the movement is constructed and operates generates less friction within the movement. That means less frequent servicing. The 3235 has an amplitude issue as well. The 3135 doesn’t. So despite the lug thickness, I will go with the maxi case all day.
A bit of exaggeration IMHO but to each their own…If you’ve ever seen this in the metal (or worn it) then you’ll know the rehaut is only visible up close (and at an angle).
Surely you realize that images appear larger on screen and that the rehaut (not to be confused with chapter ring) is tiny and unnoticeable in real life? How can something be gaudy if you basically need a magnifying glass to see it. I've always felt other brands would benefit from decorating their rehauts as well.
@ it is iconic, the deity of the black, the balance in design, it’s a black beauty, doesn’t need anything extravagant, if you can’t afford one just say so
Weirdly, I tried on both 41mm and 40mm, and the 41mm had better proportions. Maxi case looks larger somehow. Bought the 41mm and my wrists aren’t large.
There must be someting wrong with me I don't get the hype. It does not do anything either functionally or visually better than many more affordable watches. "Doesn't anyone notice this? I feel like I am taking crazy pills?" Mugatu. It is the Zoolander of watches.
No date I hate the cyclops that’s why I own this very watch I love it, I got mine at a massive discount from a watch dealer second hand and because the case had a few marks.
I have a maxi case Sub. I wear it almost everyday. Cutting/splitting firewood, working on my car, to the range with my precision rifle. It is great for me. I have other watches that I occasionally wear for dress occasions, but most of the time it is my sub. If JOMW had bought the ND sub 6 years ago, it would have been a great investment as compared to most of the other watches I have ever seen him review.
@@martonpinter3738 I don't know about that. My maxi sub is worth more than I paid for it today. I have had it about 6 years myself. I don't collect watches for investments, but even now with the fall in prices after COVID, Rolex, still holds it value better than most. Some models much better than others.
@@martonpinter3738 Most watches are a horrible investment. Don't buy them for investments. Buy used if you can for most of them. I didn't buy my sub for an investment. I wear it all the time no matter what I am doing. That said, depending on what model one buys, Rolex holds its value better than most and MANY gain value over time. Jody mentioned in the video that even the sub he considered buying was 50% more today than 6 years ago. That is at AD prices and probably a little more on the after market. So roughly 8.3% per year gain? So, don't buy them as an investment, but with Rolex, there is a good chance you at least will break even or better after inflation than with most models.
I would never buy a steel Rolex. But, I did recently buy another gold .. I bought the all gold bluesy. It's a heft chunk of non-precious gold (gold is in massive abundance, no need to call it precious). I like gold so that suits me. Plus, it's a work out every time I choose that over my others. It's a hard choice on a night out between the bluesy and my IWC Perp Cal Moonphase and Brequet tourb. I like watches 🙂 They are a nice little novelty.
I really like the Sub but I can't stand the new bezels the older bezels had a much more tool watch look , I'm wearing a black bay pro at the moment I prefer Tudor they are bit more like Rolex were in the 70's - 80's more tool watch less blingy.
The new 41mm sub is a lovely watch, having owned a previous 14060m sub that I purchased new in 2003 and now own the new 124060. I can confirm the new sub is far superior in all aspects. This current one will be with me until the day I die and I will then pass it on on my will along with my 36mm bi-gold DJ
Have always preferred Sea-Dwellers and they often do not have the horrendous Cyclops, but the new dimensions of the latest Sub have got me wanting one. Hopefully the Batman will be updated to 41/21mm soon.
The vintage references just have much better proportions. The matte dial and aluminium insert also just looks much better. I wouldnt say no to a new sub, but if I could have Rolex make me any watch they have ever released with modern specs I'd ask for a Mlsub 5517 or 1680 sub.
40mm looks like a child’s watch on my 8.5” wrists. I wish more watches were available in larger sizes, which means this latest trend of everything moving back smaller has left me with far fewer options than I used to have. Luckily, in terms of Rolex, there is the sea dweller for me.
I have the 16600 Sea Dweller and the 16610 Sub Date and that’s the final release before the supercase release and I love it the new ones are too in your face and aren’t the professional tool watches they were designed to be. Love the old classic style.
For me no date all the time, (1) Its links back to the original Submariner (2) Dive watch with a date pointless in terms of tool watch (3) no date is a cleaner look (4) No date harder to get. Additional points of note, the bracelet (best in the game) , the 72 hour power reserve,.
@martinward7239 #2 please note "tool watch" in my comment. #3 please look at the watch and note that the date cyclops is located at 3 not 6, #3 for the consumer as they make less.

I think the idea that having a Rolex is 'as good as money in the bank' is downright false. For example - since 2022, the prices of most steel Rolex sports watches has depreciated more than inflation has affected the value of cash in most countries. Therefore, buying a Rolex in 2022 is definitely worse than putting money in the bank in 2022. What's more, despite being essentially the most liquid watch you can buy, a Rolex watch is still not as liquid as cash. In other words, if you need the money, you still have to go through the trouble of selling the watch before you can gain access to your money. This is not the case with cash, which can be used immediately. Thirdly, just because 'Submariners' are selling for X on Chrono, doesn't mean your Submariner will sell for X. What I mean by this is that, if you buy a mint condition Submariner today and you wear it for 5 years, when it comes time to sell, you are not selling a mint condition Sub anymore. Therefore, even if the price of mint condition Subs of the version you have does go up in those 5 years, your particular Sub might not go up at all, because you have to factor in the fact that it is now worn, and not mint. Also, depending on how quicky you want to sell it, you may not have the luxury of waiting to be offered the best price, so you may not be able to sell at market value. Long term (10 years or more), this Sub may have some potential of making you money, but it will never make significant money over inflation while Rolex makes as many Subs as they're making right now. Maybe one of the special editions (Hulk or Kermit) may be able to do that. I think that while having a Rolex Sub or Daytona is as close as you can get to having money in the bank, they are still not as good as cash in the bank. And this is an important distinction.
I wasn’t a fan of the Maxi case Sub. And agree the newer 41mm version resolved the balance for me. I actually got the new Submariner (without date) I like the simple balance of the face.
In a suit? Sub. By the pool in swimming trunks? Sub. Out for dinner with the wife dressed smart? Sub. Going to a wedding? Sub. Out with the family on holiday site seeing? Sub. Relaxing at home on a Sunday in a tracksuit and hoody? Sub. You can virtually wearing it in any setting and it wont be out of place . The greatest watch ever made. Hands down the perfect one watch collection.
only issue with a sub is no one will believe its a genuine Rolex, not that the opinions of others are always a concern but still. Its popularity in the replica market is so very high but a homage will get mistaken for a sub very often. A dream divers for me would me a seamaster midsize with the newer materials its itching for a reissue
For $3500 the Sinn U50 may suit you perfectly. The Rolex pre 2010 dimensions are the best IMO because the weight is 135g so more comfortable. Rolex should never have changed the case size.

Finally got around to having it serviced in year 17...at Rolex Geneva...cost me about US$1100. Today, my everyday watches for travel and around town...Steeldive SD1953, Cronos L6006, Seestern S435, Thorn SHY037...
I’ve had my share of subs but get bored and end up selling or trading them. Believe it or not my 36mm 6 digit white dial stick on oyster /smooth bezel DJ is my go to. Super comfortable, the right amount of sport and dress. It’s lasted in my collection longer than any sub has.
Nice! Classic.
36mm is so versatile, vanishes on the wrist 👌🏽
36mm DJ works at my grand sons soccer game, court hearing or nice dinner with the wife. It goes with and a tux.
Only rolex I want is a 36mm explorer it's perfect 🥰
Got bored of telling the time !?
Jody have introduced another personality to buy watches and hide the funding sources of his new watch company. He even hired an actor to pretend to be "Mr P" . It's ok Jody, we won't tell your wife.
🤫😉😂
No date 'cause the cyclops is ugly, and is a Rolex giveaway. If I'm having a Rolex I want to appreciate it's watchness, not it's Rolexness. Yes, they are made up words.
😂
I actually bought myself a maxi case sub date recently and here’s why; 40mm case and it has the 3135. Sure, it only has 48 hours power reserve, but the way the movement is constructed and operates generates less friction within the movement. That means less frequent servicing. The 3235 has an amplitude issue as well. The 3135 doesn’t. So despite the lug thickness, I will go with the maxi case all day.
What, you don't want a watch that says ROLEXROLEXROLEXROLEXROLEXROLEX on the chapter ring? Ruinously gaudy
Maybe I'm also a bit gaudy cos I hardly even notice that any more.
A bit of exaggeration IMHO but to each their own…If you’ve ever seen this in the metal (or worn it) then you’ll know the rehaut is only visible up close (and at an angle).
I like the ones that repeat LEXRO, but I hear ya
Unfortunately it’s one of the things done to limit fakes.
Surely you realize that images appear larger on screen and that the rehaut (not to be confused with chapter ring) is tiny and unnoticeable in real life? How can something be gaudy if you basically need a magnifying glass to see it. I've always felt other brands would benefit from decorating their rehauts as well.
Thx for you’re good and honest view Jody
have a small wrist, 16610 would suit me better. Recently bought a 16570 exp2, starting to like 5 digits more. Looking at a 16234 36 dj now as well.
A black lacquered, not enameled dial I believe. And yes, the newly profiled case does look much better on the wrist 😁👍
I would go for a date version as I actually use the date and for some reason the date version looks more luxurious to me
2 Seconds in... Hesketh t;shirt. Yessss
Shoulda included female end links... Like my Pelagos and BB41 have.
Don’t mind male end links personally if they taper down and hug the wrist, makes the watch look less slab sided
I've always thought the subby was a bit... dull.
Beauty in simplicity
@@13ShelbyGuy
It's not beautiful. A willard is beautiful, a sub is not.
@ it is iconic, the deity of the black, the balance in design, it’s a black beauty, doesn’t need anything extravagant, if you can’t afford one just say so
@@13ShelbyGuy
I can but I will always chose a Breitling instead of a Rolex.
@ Breitling has a few beauties as well, can you guess which one I have?
Weirdly, I tried on both 41mm and 40mm, and the 41mm had better proportions. Maxi case looks larger somehow. Bought the 41mm and my wrists aren’t large.
Impressive price for heavy mass production SS watch.Bonkers
There must be someting wrong with me I don't get the hype. It does not do anything either functionally or visually better than many more affordable watches. "Doesn't anyone notice this? I feel like I am taking crazy pills?" Mugatu. It is the Zoolander of watches.
With an 8 inch wrist, I would like it to be 42 to 44mm. I love my Oris Aquis, but I regret goinf 41.5 instead of 43.5
No date I hate the cyclops that’s why I own this very watch I love it, I got mine at a massive discount from a watch dealer second hand and because the case had a few marks.
Watches are a horrible investment in general (even Rolex). I don't believe Jody buys watches for investment either.
Date is a must. I have a 16610 (2006) which I think is the perfect Sub.
The Rolex has had one since the 1950’s.
@@bngr_bngr Subs didn't have a date in the 50s though
Love the Hesketh t-shirt!
Are you aware how much gold has ever been found by humans ? Google it , it’s an eye opener
I'm gonna stick with my San Martin....... LOFL
I really like the Sub but I can't stand the new bezels the older bezels had a much more tool watch look , I'm wearing a black bay pro at the moment I prefer Tudor they are bit more like Rolex were in the 70's - 80's more tool watch less blingy.
Black Bay line of watches are sterile. I wish Tudor was allowed to make the Submariner again.
Plenty of large watch companies. You can actually pull off a royal oak offshore
Totally agree Jody, the vintage submariner’s cases/proportions are much more attractive.
#2. Only if you wear a dive watch for diving and not for anything else.
#3. Date at 6 IS a clean look.
#4. Harder to get for who?
@martinward7239 #2 please note "tool watch" in my comment. #3 please look at the watch and note that the date cyclops is located at 3 not 6, #3 for the consumer as they make less.
It's not a tool watch. None of the divers I know would wear one at work. That's just marketing
@@DL-wl6fk Divers don't wear mechanical watches nowadays, they wear dive computers.
You said date isn't a clean look not date at 3 o'clock.
Marginally less, not enough to be a problem.
But I do agree the bracelet is amongst the best ever. All Rolex bracelets are exceptional IMO
@@martinward7239what does "date at 6 is a clean look" mean?
Being an actual diver , the last thing I'm looking for in a dive watch is elegance. And the new( 124060 ) 41mm is it perfect sweet spot for a dive watch .
Being an actual diver I wear a dive computer not a mechanical watch.
@@martinward7239correct as a mixed gas CCR diver myself. All dives are tracked on computer along with all deco requirements via an integrated pp02 monitoring computer. However having also owned 2 subs (14060m and now the new 124060) it’s nice to have a watch that is pure class and also can stay on my wrist if required when I do a dive but mainly because of the dive history’s the sub carries with it.
I'm in no position to even consider buying a submariner but i can't help but feel like the modern shape just seems gaudy compared to the classic shape
love the larger size!
Nah, it still looks great
I paid AU$3,300 for a New date sub in 1991. I sold it in 2011 for AU$4,500 and I don't miss it. I luv my vintage Seiko divers much more......particularly my 6306.
Hesketh! That's a deep cut, as I'm told the younglings say now. 😎👍
For me the 16610 was the last of the great Subbies. Recently sold my one I treated myself to in 1997 for about 6 times what I paid for it. Hate the shiny vulgar 6 digit and beyond Rolexes and what the company and its AD's has become.
You sound bitter and jealous.
@@whereRbearsTeeth it's just preference bud, not everyone likes the newest and shiniest. I don't mind the 6 digit Rolex models but when it comes to the Explorer II Polar, I much prefer the look and proportions of the 5 digit Polar as opposed to the 6 digits.
@@whereRbearsTeeth No not at all - disappointed maybe. In my overall collection I still have a small collection of Rolex models (older 5 digit and before) which I enjoy very much. Rolex is now a swag statement, not a well made tool watch co that it built its reputation on and is my preference.
I'd love to see a no date Sea Dweller at some point. Big wrist guys struggle with the standard sub.
Hesketh racing Jody. That brings back memories.
I've seen so many homages of this bloody thing over the years I honestly don't want to see the design any more.
I cant see why anyone would pick this over a Pelagos or Seamaster (or both for the price), they are just much more interesting watches than this
You can't think of any reason? Not even resale value?
Probably because you have never actually held one in your hands. You’ve only seen RUclips videos. The submariner is leagues ahead of both of those watches.
@@whereRbearsTeeth nah in my opinion it isn’t, I have handled them bro, its a Rolex not the holy grail, I dont think they are leagues above Tudor or Omega
@@martinward7239 thats not a reason to own a watch.
@@whereRbearsTeeth I disagree. I dislike the weight of the new subs. It was much better up to the 90s and not blingy like it is now. I also much prefer the styling of the BB58 than modern subs. My first sub cost £1200, before you remark 'you've never owned one'
Er….no. The sub is still king!
That’s why people hate the King. I mean comparing an Aliexpress knock off to a Sub then saying it’s 90% as good is just moronic.
My San Martin Ranger works fine too..
Definitely the date, it's usable and it's classic with the cyclops
As I've learned from you , could always go with the Steel Dive 1953 from Ali. Lol. Cheers.
I accidentally bought myself a 21mm Tropic strap instead of a 22mm recently. I guess the best solution is just to get myself a 41mm Submariner. Do they come in blue?
Wicked T-shirt! The watch looks cool too. 😊
I have three Rolex. One with the new case and two GMTs with the older case. Unless you study them closely, you cannot see the differences. They wear the same. To me at least.
I bought a 5 digit date 2008 model in 2011 as didn’t like the new model. Still think it’s a great watch, still my favourite. Paid £3,750 at the time. It was good enough for James Bond, ‘nuff said
I think the idea that having a Rolex is 'as good as money in the bank' is downright false.
I went with the original design, the 124060 Submariner. It's my first Rolex and I don't ever plan on selling it.
Love the sub no date ... I have the new model 124

Outlier here. I love the Maxi case.
if only it had more text, just needs a couple more lines
only issue with a sub is no one will believe its a genuine Rolex, not that the opinions of others are always a concern but still. Its popularity in the replica market is so very high but a homage will get mistaken for a sub very often. A dream divers for me would me a seamaster midsize with the newer materials its itching for a reissue
I have never been a fan of the Subby, but the most recent 41mm version is the worst.
I love big watches, they are cool.
For $3500 the Sinn U50 may suit you perfectly. The Rolex pre 2010 dimensions are the best IMO because the weight is 135g so more comfortable. Rolex should never have changed the case size.
I remember Hesketh, is that not the team that James Hunt drove for?
I would still go for a pre Maxi case one XD
I mean, it was already ruined ages ago by how inaccessible it is even to people with the money saved for one 😂
I love my two-tone Bluesy 16613 and Kermit 16610V. Give me the classics!
The newer Maxi case would look better if it had a wider Bracelet and marrower lugs. All they had to do was upscale the 5 digit version to a 40mm..This new larger version looks way better than the Maxi case. No Date would be my pick. No awkward cyclops..But i would rather have a Seamaster 300 tbh...
Finally got a ginault again recently
Missed that watch
