Are Rolex Two-Tone and Gold Sports watches becoming more popular?
I'm seeing more Rolex Submariner, Rolex GMT Master and Rolex Explorer in Two Tone and full gold. I think this could be a new trend. Especially as buying a Rolex is now near impossible before of the long Rolex waitlist.

Perfect timing! I considered rewarding myself with a Submariner for quite a while now. Then, a month ago, I walked into a Rolex boutique at the Zurich Airport and had the two tone, black dial on my wrist. I wanted a tool watch, I actually use and certainly had no intention spending that amount on a watch, but didn’t want to wait either. Minutes later I headed towards the gate, with my new watch.
Since then, I wore it every day. It already shows little scratches, even some deeper ones on the clasp. I don’t mind. I want this watch to be my everyday watch that tells me not only the time, but reminds me of it. I am blessed to live a very active and adventurous life.
So, your wish, seeing a beaten up two tone Sub might be come true soon.
Oh, and by the way, this is my first watch over 500£ (yes: Five hundred)!
    Great video!

I agree the Rootbeer looks awesome in steel and gold. I'd set my heart on one but, I couldn't get it at retail and I refuse to pay £7000 above retail. That said, I visited my AD. I looked at the Rootbeer, a Yacht-Master in two tone and a Date-Just in two tone. I bought the Yacht-Master last Saturday in two tone and chocolate dial. You have to see it in the flesh to appreciate it. It's a watch I overlooked on the Rolex website because the photos don't do it justice. My next watch? Blue Sub in two tone.

Spot on, Adrian! I have several TT and SS pieces. I enjoy them both. My first pieces were a TT Sub and DJ in the 90s. Personally, all gold, unless stealth metal such as platinum or white gold is not for me, but the TT dresses it up and makes the piece more versatile from dress to sports. I feel the all gold makes a completely different look and statement from dress to wealth, but not sports. If we are looking at it from a purest's perspective then, as a rugged sport watch, the sport models should only be in SS, as you say. However, that ship sailed long ago with the introduction of solid and TT sport models decades ago. So, the watch community has the choice of embracing or rejecting PM pieces, but I'm all in for SS and TTs.

I’ve taken it to Mexico into the ocean off the coast of Baja California, I’ve taken it to Spain worn walking through the cobble stone streets of Barcelona, to the greatest electronic festival in the world of Tomorrow Land, I wear it in my hometown of Los Angeles where there is an air of danger because you always have to watch your back these days and I also wear it when I’m at the computer running my company.

I can truly say I love well-executed 2-tones now, thanks to my own personal Rolex 2-tone that I just acquired. Here's my story:
Earlier this year I visited a Rolex AD, wanting to look at Milgauss'es, or OP's, or something else very introductory for the brand.
They only had 6 new watches left in the whole shop, and they had 5 used ones.
The show-stopper in the used section was a "Batman". I should've gone for that, at least on paper, right?
While I really liked the GMT Master 2, I couldn't buy it, because I was stopped dead in my tracks by a brand new, sparkling, 2-tone 36 mm Datejust, in Everose gold and oystersteel.
I left the AD, and "slept on it", and for the next 3 days, I just couldn't stop thinking about the 36 mm white Roman dial, surrounded by that sultry, rosey golden fluted bezel!
I returned to the AD, and walked out of that store buying something I didn't intend on buying when I walked in...but that just totally sense. It was love at first sight.
I've come to the conclusion that one of the reasons I enjoy 2-tone so much, is that in seeing the gold next to the steel, it allows my eyes to better appreciate the beauty of what gold is, by vividly being reminded what gold isn't. This is something fully gold watches cannot do, and why I actually enjoy 2-tone even more than full gold. Cheers!

I think the popularity of solid gold is returning and that will drag two tone with it. Yellow gold is a hard colour to wear for most caucasians - it's jolting and glary. But as we see the rise of rose gold, we see more buyers choosing to make that leap. Not necessarily in Rolex, but PP, AP, VC, ALS etc. It will be interesting to see if Rolex follows by making Subs available in Everose - so far the GMTs and Daytonas have been the sports watch test cases. The very high grey market prices for steel in top tier and Rolex sports watches are great for these brands. They condition buyers to high prices and allow them to consider spending not that much more on gold, which they can more easily get from the retailer. Rolex's Oysterflex strap also allows buyers into gold without the cost and overwhelming obviousness of a gold bracelet. The fact that it is a factory product also gives buyers 'permission' to wear a rubber strap, which previously, if made as a personal choice, would have been considered not very 'Rolex'.
The root beer GMT has been a very successful start to the return of two tone for Rolex. The everose and steel with brown dial, draws on the history of the 1675 two tone with the softer effect of the rose gold. It is a mile away from the flashy steel and YG TT Datejust on Jubilee, the quintessential 80's yuppie watch, dirty, as you say. While this is still available from Rolex, I'm not sure how may buyers currently want one. They are just forced to buy one on their journey toward preferred client who has steel sports watch access.
But fashion is fashion, and everything comes back if there is enough time to forget in between. It is human nature to tire of ubiquitous styles, then banish them only to be able to view them again later with fresh eyes. This is especially true if the new generation didn't experience their popularity the first time around. It is likely that many buyers of the new TT Explorer aren't old enough to have felt the cringe of showy 1980's excess. And in regard to the reduced practicality offered by gold to a sports watch, we know luxury sports watches are no longer used for any kind of sport: like the G Wagon rolling on 24s, they only have to look the part. The return of gold is as certain as everything else in fashion - the cycle continues. It will take some time, and some good marketing, but if we know Rolex, there shouldn't be any problem with that.

Problem with twotone: the more you wear them and then polish, the stainless part on the bracelet starts to look oddly different than the gold. The gold wears faster, and after polishing you’ll see this more and more. It’s better to get full gold so it’s more uniformed in how it wears and ages. If you don’t plan to use a twotone often, it’s fine. But under sports use this uneven wear from two types of materials becomes more cumbersome. I had a twotone Rolex and I’ll never get another. Gold or white gold or stainless just better for longevity from my experience.

The 2 tones seem to be not as popular as a standard versions so they seem to be more accessible. I think 2 tone for me adds a little more bling without being to much of a flash git. I like the Tudor S&G as its a little more suttle than its big brother at rolex as it has brush finish.

I had my name in with my AD for a SS Explorer. Received a call to come in and try on a TT Explorer. It certainly was nice. They said it’s mine if I wanted it. I turned it down and a bit later on the AD called and had an 114270 on consignment, which I picked up. While picking it up I mentioned that a Rootbeer would be the next watch that I’m looking for. The softness of the Rose gold has drawn me in. I am now firmly in the gold Rolex camp.

I had given up on a SS sub so got a black dial Pelagos but then the Rolex AD I had my name down called me 6 months later with a back dial 2 tone Sub. Baulked at first due to the price but something about the gold and black together swayed me. I find that depending on my mood and what I will be doing I swap between the Pelly and Sub and really appreciate having the choice. More recently I have taken my Sub on adventures which the Pelly is ideally suited to, like swimming in and behind a waterfall and body surfing. At 1st I worried about scratching the gold but now kind of enjoy seeing the wear and tear. I absolutely love my 2 tone Sub. Great video!

Interesting stuff -- I found myself picking up the WHITE GOLD versions of sports watches: I have the Lange Odysseus in white gold and also the Zenith Daytona in white gold. Some of your comments align with my thinking on this. Specifically, it seems counter to the purpose of the watches to get them in a precious metal. But I knew that I would never really be wearing them "the way they were intended to be worn" and only as a timepiece in my daily journey. Since I liked the look of the designs and prefer luxury metals, these were the choices I made. Also, the white gold versions of these timepieces have a softer (and whiter) look to them than their steel counterparts which makes them look very cool to me. Finally, at least in the cases of my watches, they are not on bracelets which the steel versions are and I prefer to wear straps over bracelets.

I say this as someone of African descent and consequently more darker skin tone...I have tried on a solid rose root beer and I have got to say it does not looking like a statement to my eyes against my skin. Against my caucasian friends skin tone it did like a statement. Yellow gold looked like a statement to me against all skin tones! Please I do not say this to offend anyone.
I actually tried on a steel date just and it just looked washed out to me. The AD's face when I had it on said it all. I tried on a bimetal yacht master with chocolate dial and it was night and day difference, I brought that watch immediately. I have now got a bimetal root beet and also a bimetal sub with black face.
The rose gold looks lovely against skin tone and the root beer is by far my fave watch of the trio, followed by the sub, I do however aim to get a full everose root beet and rose daytona, not to make a statement but simply because they look best against my skin.
I also want a batman on a jubilee as I have noticed the jubilee bracelet is less likely to pick up scratches. I find the oyster bracelet is a magnet for scratches! I personally wear all my watches on rotation as life is short and I won't be able to take them with me! So I have learnt to life with scratches as hey we've all got a few lines on ourselves!
    Lovely video btw.

I'm a bit less sure about an all gold Sub, although I suppose it has some connotations of diving for gold and so may be, metaphorically, the perfect diver's watch.

Two tone watches are having a comeback mainly as a result of people not being able to get the steel counterpart. People are "forced" to buy them when they have their eyes set on Rolex but can't get hold of steel models. Ultimately, more two tone watches are sold and thereby become more "popular". However, I don't think two tone watches ever will become as classic or timeless as steel models or solid gold models, and what we are seeing right now is just temporary hype. With that said, I am a huge fan of the CHNR rootbeer and two tone explorer.
