Good one DAX!! Yeah I think I was in love with Diana back in the day too! The Supremes and all the various other "girl" groups of the early and mid 60's are like the sound track of my life. The great irony is the Beatles really liked them too and even did a few covers of them but when Beatle mania took over America they pretty much eclipsed all that great motown stuff.
Ahhhh....! MOTOWN!!! My older sister was a Motown freak. She started pickling my brain from about my 5th year of life. Smokey Robinson, The Supremes, The Temptations.....all playing in our house constantly. Then, as I heard other stuff coming from other sources, I kinda wished I was back in my sister's room listening to her records. They just had that bounce and richness to them. Great reaction, Dax. I can smell the Aqua-Net.
The song was orignally recorded for Ross's first solo LP, without Mary Wilson or Cindy Birdsong. In her first book Wilson said when it was recorded without the two of them "I knew it was really over".
i love this song... amazingly, my absolute FAVORITE Supreme's songs, were AFTER diana ross left the band... Stone Love, Up the Ladder to the Roof, Nathan Jones
Best song she ever did written by Johnny Bristol. The Supremes were not the background singers for this record. It was another group that did background vocals for a lot of the Motown act including Marvin Gaye.
With 18 #1 hit singles Diana Ross is in the Guinness World Book as the greatest female singer of all time, Diana Ross tied the King of Rock and roll Elvis Presley with the most #1 hit singles with 18 12 with the Supremes and 6 as a Soloist.
What a fantastic time that was for music.
I love this song!

FYI: Mary and Cindy did not do the backup singing on the record in the studio.

Love the song, Stone Love sang without Diana.
nearly their last 'hit' they'd been able to patch together & produce; they weren't 'together' much, after this. time they were a changin' . . .
Nice, just a little bit too sugary for me!
