  • Nearly four decades after taking a "break," the Swedish pop group ABBA is back with a new album, "Voyage." Correspondent Seth Doane talks to group members Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus about the music that first drew them together - and brought them back to the recording studio (and soon, in a live concert performance featuring digital avatars).

Check out Kristina From Duvemala if you haven't heard it. B & B wrote a musical based on a trilogy of novels. There are recordings of the show in Swedish and English.
      It is stunning.
This is an expert from Time Magazine's review:
"Some of the most rapturous melodies ever heard in Carnegie Hall poured out of that grand old barn last night. The occasion was the first English-language production of Kristina, a musical based on the four Emigrants novels by Wilhelm Moberg. Spanning two continents and the Atlantic in between, the three-hour epic has all the makings of a thrilling stage experience: noble peasants, dying children, powerful voices, the dream of a new land. Most of all, a superb score. No wonder that, at the end, cheers and a standing ovation greeted Kristina's creators: two spangled Swedes, Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus - once, and always, the guys from ABBA."
And from the Guardian in the U.K.
"It was an evening of toe curling, passion and standing ovations. The lush, occasionally haunting, score peppered with operatic aspirations was delivered by the Symphony Orchestra under the baton of no less than Drama Desk and Tony Lifetime Achievement Award-winning Paul Gemignani. The music soared rhapsodically as if to fill every nook and cranny of the vast hall."
I can vouch for that. It's almost criminal B & B didn't pare it down to 2 1/2 hours, lighten it up a bit, and send it to Broadway. It would still be writing. It was epic!

So to hear and watch all 4 members record in a studio after 40 years is like a breath of fresh air and they still have that distintive sound and voice that you can identify straight away.
So to round my message up i guess every generation of ABBA fans knew that just one day there may be a chance to see and hear them as 4 once again.

Also, in spite of having all that money they have since the late 70's, they haven't spent it lavishly but live very simple ordinary lives here in Sweden. You see them every now and then out and about in Stockholm and they go to regular lunch restaurants, drive normal cars etc., not dressed in fancy clothes (clearly seen in this segment), no expensive accessories, cars etc. It's the Swedish way if you like, people don't change lifestyle or flaunt it here when they achieve wealth, the owner of IKEA was the same.
Benny always say that the money has given them the artistic freedom, they are in full control of their catalogue, label and absolutely everything so they can afford to invest in theirs and others creativity. They've done the London musical "Chess, the Swedish musical "Kristina från Duvemåla", the "Mamma Mia" shows, musical and films, they are building their own arena in London for their new show and they don't have to ask anyone to fund it for them and they don't need to compromise their visions. They were offered 1 Billion dollar in 2000 to perform in 10 concerts, they declined. All these investments they've made could have been flops, they could have lost all their personal investments in what they produce but luckily they haven't.
So when Benny makes that comment, he means that the money is a tool for them to keep creating as they do. All four of them always express outmost gratitude, they never took their success for granted and as you can see in this segment - they still don't after 50 years.

G Gordon Liddy, raved about ABBA on his AM radio show. The watergate operative. He’d give out relationship advice in his show. He talked about biting his German Shepards on the gums to show he was the alpha owner. He claimed everything was in his wife’s name who he loved tremendously. Those were the days of AM radio and FM was symphonic or the beginning of private labels from entrepreneurial musicians. Now a huge part of the public radio market.
