The background vocals were by a Motown in house group called The Andantes. The two Supremes in the video who are miming the background vocals didn’t actually record them or sing them on the Ed Sullivan show. Diana recorded the song without them because it was supposed to be her first solo song after leaving the group but Motown decided she should give it to the group so they would end their years together with a final number one hit.

They were such a talented group with so many hit songs. The movie "Dreamgirls" was based on some aspects of the Supremes' rise to the top. The first time we saw Diana Ross on TV we knew she was going to be a superstar. She had the looks, the smile, the personality and you couldn't take your eyes off of her. You are really finding the best of the best. Never stop enjoying the music of that old time Rock and Roll!

If you go back to when Ed Sullivan was introducing them, he said Diana Ross was going on into a solo career, that's why it was their last appearance as The Supremes.

It wasn't their last appearance as the Supremes. It was Diana Ross' last TV appearance as a Supreme.

This was Diana Ross and the Supremes farewell song in 1969, As Diana Ross was turning solo in 1970 Someday We'll be Together 1969 was their 12th and final #1 hit single. Ending a remarkable 5 year run and 12 #1 hit songs. Diana Ross would tie Elvis Presley for the most #1 songs at 18 making her the greatest female vocalist of all times.

A very supreme reaction 👸🏾👸🏾👸🏾! Diana Ross on lead with Mary Wilson, Cindy Birdsong (Kim Coles lol) as background members. Someday We’ll Be Together was released as the lead single from The Supremes' 1969 album: Cream Of The Crop. It was written by Johnny Bristol, Jackey Beavers and Harvey Fuqua. It was produced by Johnny Bristol. Backing vocals by Julia Waters, Maxine Waters, Merry Clayton and Johnny Bristol. The song reached #1 on the Hot 100, #1 Cash Box 100 #1 on the R&B chart and #12 on the Adult Contemporary chart. The single topped the Hot 100 in the final 1969 issue of Billboard magazine on December 27. It was the last #1 Hot 100 song of the 1960s. It sold two million copies in the US and was certified Gold.
The song was originally recorded and released Johnny Bristol and Jackey Beavers in 1961 as "Johnny & Jackey" for the Tri-Phi Records record label that same year. The song was a moderate success in the Midwestern United States, but gained little notice in other markets or on the music charts. Tri-Phi Records was purchased by Motown Records in the mid-1960s.
The song was revived in 1969 when Motown Records brought in Johnny Bristol to produce a new version of the song for Jr Walker & The All-Stars as a follow-up to their hit song: "What Does It Take (To Win Your Love)". Johnny Bristol recorded the track with Motown's famed Funk Brothers house band and added backing vocals using singers at the record label including Julia Waters, Maxine Waters and Merry Clayton. But Jr Walker & The All-Stars never got to record it. The Supremes were about to break up, and Motown needed a big hit to launch Diana Ross' solo career.
Increasingly growing desperate, Berry Gordy decided to give the song to Diana Ross instead of Jr Walker & The All-Stars. Diana Ross added her lead vocals to the track, but Berry Gordy decided it was better suited as the final Supremes' single with Diana Ross instead of her solo debut. The Supremes needed a big finale to close out their Diana Ross era, move forward as a group, and send off Diana Ross as a solo artist, and that's exactly what the song did, even though Diana Ross was the only group member to sing on it in the studio. Berry Gordy appended The Supremes billing to the single as to create more publicity for Diana Ross' exit from the group into her solo career.
The Supremes, with Diana Ross singing lead, made their final TV appearance together on The Ed Sullivan Show that aired live Sunday, December 21, 1969, on CBS. The song was the closing number at Diana Ross & The Supremes' farewell concert on January 14, 1970, at the Frontier Hotel in Las Vegas. After the completion of the show, Jean Terrell was presented onstage to the audience as Diana Ross' replacement alongside Mary Wilson and Cindy Birdsong. Thus "Diana Ross & The Supremes" officially split apart, becoming "Diana Ross" (the solo act) and "The Supremes" (the group).
In the original version of the song, it is about a guy predicting that he and his girl are destined to be together even though he let her go. The Supremes' version could be heard as an affirmation that the group will always be together in spirit, even after the departure of Diana Ross. However, the group didn't share this sentiment, as Diana Ross was at odds with her bandmates, Mary Wilson and Cindy Birdsong.
Diana Ross reunited with Mary Wilson and Cindy Birdsong in 1983, performing the single for the NBC television special: "Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever". However, this long anticipated performance was cut short mostly owing to lack of rehearsal after more than a decade of the group being apart. There is much speculation regarding the onstage exchange that took place between Diana Ross and Mary Wilson, but some audience members report it resulted in Diana Ross shoving Mary Wilson during the on-stage performance. The show ended with the Motown acts that performed earlier: The Temptations, Smokey Robinson and Michael Jackson among them, taking the stage and singing along. A heavily edited version of this performance was aired on national television and released on the DVD of Motown 25.
The song has been covered by many other artists including 📻: Anita Ward, Rita Marley And The Soulettes, Lorrie Morgan, Bruce Springsteen, Bill Anderson and Jan Howard, The Marvelettes, Vonda Shepard, La Toya Jackson and more.
The song has been featured on some television shows including 📺: The Wonder Years ("Just Between Me And You And Kirk And Paul And Carla And Becky" - 1989), Quantum Leap ("The Leap Home: Part 2" - 1990), Murphy Brown ("Bump In The Night" - 1993), Ally McBeal ("It's My Party" - 1998), Glee ("Dreams Come True" - 2015), Young Sheldon ("A Swedish Science Thing And The Equation For Toast" - 2022) and more.

    The Supremes Info 📰:
The Supremes were an all girl singing group and a premier act of Motown Records during the 1960s. Founded as The Primettes in Detroit, Michigan, in 1959, The Supremes were the most commercially successful of Motown's acts and the most successful American vocal band, with 12 number-one singles on the Billboard Hot 100. Most of these hits were written and produced by Motown's main songwriting and production team: Eddie Holland, Brian Holland and Lamont Dozier. It is said that their breakthrough made it possible for future African-American R&B and Soul musicians to find mainstream success. Billboard ranked The Supremes as the 16th greatest Hot 100 artist of all time. They are regarded as the most famous female singing group of all time.
Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson, Diana Ross, and Betty McGlown, the original group members, were all from the Brewster-Douglass public housing projects in Detroit. They formed The Primettes as the sister act to The Primes (with Paul Williams and Eddie Kendricks, who went on to form The Temptations). Barbara Martin replaced Betty McGlown in 1960, and the group signed with Motown Records the following year as The Supremes. Barbara Martin left the act in early 1962, and Diana Ross, Florence Ballard, and Mary Wilson continued as a trio.
During the mid-1960s, The Supremes achieved mainstream success with Diana Ross as lead singer and Holland-Dozier-Holland as its songwriting and production team. In 1967, Motown Records president Berry Gordy renamed the group Diana Ross & The Supremes, and replaced Florence Ballard with Cindy Birdsong. In 1970, Diana Ross left the group to pursue a solo career and was replaced by Jean Terrell, and the group reverted the name to The Supremes again.
During the mid-1970s, the lineup changed with Lynda Laurence, Scherrie Payne and Susaye Greene, joining the group. On June 12, 1977, The Supremes performed their farewell concert at the Drury Lane Theater in London as Mary Wilson made her exit for a solo career and Scherrie Payne and Susaye Greene had selected Joyce Vincent to round out the trio as a new third member. Instead, Motown Records decided that without any original members, The Supremes would be disbanded in 1977.
Diana Ross briefly reunited with Mary Wilson and Cindy Birdsong to perform the song: "Someday We'll Be Together", on the "Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever" television special, taped on March 25, 1983, and broadcast on NBC on May 16, 1983.
In 1986, Jean Terrell, Scherrie Payne and Lynda Laurence began to perform as "The FLOS": Former Ladies Of The Supremes. When Jean Terrell quit in 1992, Sundray Tucker, Lynda Laurence's sister, stepped in for a short time, but was eventually replaced by Freddi Poole in 1996. More recently in September 2009, Freddi Poole was replaced by Joyce Vincent, formerly of Tony Orlando And Dawn.
In 2000, plans were made for Diana Ross to join Mary Wilson and Cindy Birdsong for a planned "Diana Ross & The Supremes: Return To Love" reunion tour. However, Nancy Wilson passed on the idea, because while the promoters offered Diana Ross $15 million to perform, Nancy Wilson was offered $4 million and Cindy Birdsong less than $1 million. Diana Ross herself offered to double the amounts both Nancy Wilson and Cindy Birdsong had originally been offered, but while Cindy Birdsong accepted, Nancy Wilson remained adamant, and as a result the deal fell through with both former Supremes.

Eventually, the "Diana Ross & The Supremes: Return To Love" tour went on as scheduled, but with Scherrie Payne and Lynda Laurence joining Diana Ross, although none of the three had ever been in the group at the same time and neither Scherrie Payne nor Lynda Laurence had sung on any of the group's original hit recordings that they were now singing live. The music critics cried foul and many fans were disappointed by both this and the shows' high ticket prices. The tour was canceled after playing only half of the dates on itinerary.
In late 1999, a proposal for a Supremes reunion tour was negotiated by Diana Ross and TNA/SFX Productions (now Live Nation Entertainment). According to Mary Wilson, Diana Ross had contacted her that December, long after she had already heard of plans for a reunion tour. Mary Wilson was initially offered $2 million, while Cindy Birdsong was reported to have been offered less than $1 million. Mary Wilson disagreed, and a counteroffer of $3 million was made. By March 2000, with salary negotiations still underway, Mary Wilson stated a deal had been accepted between her and Cindy Birdsong, but it was rejected by Diana Ross.
TNA/SFX then ceased negotiations with Mary Wilson and Cindy Birdsong. Instead, the tour: "Diana Ross & The Supremes: Return To Love", went forward with former Supremes Scherrie Payne and Lynda Lawrence, beginning in Philadelphia on June 14. The opening concert had drawn 10,000 spectators and grossed over $629,000. Though the tour did well in larger markets including near capacity at the opening night in Philadelphia and a sellout at Madison Square Garden in New York, but it under performed in smaller markets. By July 2000, the tour was reportedly performing below expectations, and was subsequently canceled after 13 concerts. Diana Ross issued a statement that she was "severely disappointed" that SFX had decided to cancel the tour.
With the passing of Florence Ballard (32 years old) from a heart attack in 1976 and the passing of Mary Wilson (76 years old) from heart disease on February 8, 2021, there is no longer any possibility of a reunion of the group's original classic lineup. Also, former group members Betty McGlown (66 years old) passed away in 2008 from diabetes complications and Barbara Martin (76 years old), no cause of passing available, passed away in 2020. The surviving Supremes' group members are comprised of: Diana Ross, Cindy Birdsong, Jean Terrell, Lynda Laurence, Scherrie Payne and Susaye Greene.
Kaaren Ragland along with Karen Jackson and Debbie Sharpe performed with Mary Wilson from 1978 through the mid-1980s for background work to help Mary Wilson fulfill contractual obligations concerning The Supremes in order to avoid being sued by Motown as Mary Wilson stated in her 1990 book. In 1989, Kaaren Ragland formed her own group called "The Sounds Of The Supremes". She has claimed numerous times that she was a member of the Supremes because of her performances with Mary Wilson, but she was never signed by Motown Records and performed with Mary Wilson only after The Supremes disbanded in 1977 and is not considered as a member of The Supremes. Yet she still tours in 2024 billed as "The Sounds Of The Supremes" in a group lineup consisting of: Kaaren Ragland (1989- Present), Kathy Merrick (1997-present) and Althea Burkhalter (vocals, 1997-98, 2000-present).
      Diana Ross Solo Career 🎤:
Following her departure from The Supremes in 1970, Diana Ross embarked on a successful solo music career with the release of her self titled debut solo album and its singles: "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" (her first solo U.S. number-one hit) and "Reach Out And Touch (Somebody's Hand)". Her second solo album: Everything Is Everything (1970), spawned her first UK number-one single: "I'm Still Waiting".
Diana Ross continued her successful solo career by mounting elaborate record-setting worldwide concert tours, starring in highly watched primetime TV specials, and releasing hit albums including: Touch Me In The Morning (1973), Mahogany (1975), Diana Ross (1976), and Diana (1980), as well as their number-one hit singles: "Touch Me In The Morning", "Theme from Mahogany (Do You Know Where You're Going To)", "Love Hangover", and "Upside Down", respectively. "Endless Love", a 1981 duet with Lionel Richie, made her the female solo act with the most number-one songs in the United States at the time. Her commercial success continued throughout the 1980s and 1990s with global hits, including the singles: "I'm Coming Out", "Why Do Fools Fall In Love", "All Of You", Chain Reaction", "If We Hold On Together" and "When You Tell Me That You Love Me".
Diana Ross has also achieved mainstream success and recognition as an actress. Her first role was her Golden Globe Award-winning and Academy Award-nominated portrayal of Billie Holiday in the 1972 film: Lady Sings The Blues. She also recorded the movie soundtrack, which became her only solo album to reach number one on the U.S. Billboard 200 album chart. She also starred in two other feature films: Mahogany (1975) and The Wiz (1978), and later appeared in the television films Out Of Darkness (1994), for which she was nominated for a Golden Globe Award, and Double Platinum (1999).
On June 9, 2023 Diana Ross is kicked off the US leg of The Music Legacy Tour which celebrates her greatest #1 hits. In May, 2023, it was announced that Ross will perform at London's Royal Albert Hall on October 14 and 15, 2023.
      Mary Wilson Solo Career 🎤:
In July 1977, just one month following her farewell performance with The Supremes, Mary Wilson began a touring "Supremes" show with two background singers as the "Mary Wilson Of The Supremes" show. The show was the result of Motown's allowance of the group to go into hiatus despite the fact that there were still several uncancelled international tour dates to complete. Mary Wilson therefore hired former Supreme, Cindy Birdsong (also of the La Belles) and Debbie Sharpe to complete a summer tour of South America to fulfill contracts so venues would not sue. The three-week tour began in Caracas, Venezuela, and was composed of mostly small clubs. Despite the company's displeasure and the fact that it owned the rights/distribution rights to the name "Supremes," Motown never cancelled the tour. Later that year, Mary Wilson hired Karen Jackson and Kaaren Ragland to tour with as background singers. She and Cindy Birdsong rehearsed them for a year end's tour of Europe, that was composed of dates at officers' clubs and swank Discos.
After an out-of-court settlement, Mary Wilson signed with Motown records for solo work, releasing a Disco-heavy self-titled album in August 1979. A single from the album: "Red Hot", peaked at number 90 on the Pop charts. Midway through production of a second solo album in 1980, Motown Records dropped her from their roster. Throughout the mid-1980s, Mary Wilson focused on performances in musical theater productions, including: Beehive, Dancing In The Streets, and Supreme Soul.
Earlier in 1974, Mary Wilson had her contract with Motown Records re-negotiated to allow her 50% ownership of the name "Supremes". During the 1990s, Mary Wilson filed suit against several former members of The Supremes, who had formed spin-off groups, for improper usage of The Supremes' name. In September 1997, the court sided with the defendant, claiming Motown Records owned the full rights to the group's name, and allowed for the spin-off groups to continue performing.
Mary Wilson then appealed the decision to the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco, which upheld the prior ruling. This prompted Mary Wilson to take a high-profile role in lobbying for "Truth In Music Advertising" legislation, which prohibits usage of musical acts names, unless an original member of the group is in the act or the group is properly licensed by the last person to hold right of title to the name. Her efforts succeeded in more than 28 U.S. states.
In 2001, Mary Wilson starred in the national tour of the musical: Leader Of The Pack - The Ellie Greenwich Story. A year later, Mary Wilson was appointed by Secretary of State Colin Powell as a "culture-connect ambassador" for the US State Department, appearing at international events arranged by that agency. In 2004, Mary Wilson joined Cindy Birdsong and Kelly Rowland (of Destiny's Child) to perform a medley of Supreme hits for the Motown 45 anniversary television special. In 2006, a live concert DVD: Live At The Sands, was released. Four years later, another DVD: Mary Wilson: Live From San Francisco... Up Close, was released.
Mary Wilson created the "Mary Wilson/Supremes Gown Collection", and had the collection tour in an exhibition of The Supremes' stage wear. The collection has been on exhibit at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio and on May 12, 2008, commenced its UK tour, starting at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. More than 50 sets of gowns are shown in rotation, starting with early formal wear from the early 1960s, and including famous gowns worn on television specials and nightclub appearances by the group in the 1960s and 1970s.
In 2001, Mary Wilson earned a degree from New York University's School of Continuing and Professional Studies.
Mary Wilson released two singles on iTunes: "Life's Been Good To Me" and "Darling Mother (Johnnie Mae)", in 2011 and 2013, respectively.
In 2015, Mary Wilson released a new single: "Time To Move On", produced by Sweet Feet Music; the song reached the Top 20 on the Billboard Dance charts history, peaking at No. 17 as of December 26. At 36 years and seven weeks, Mary Wilson holds the record for the longest gap between hits in the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart as her song: "Red Hot", debuted on October 6, 1979 and her song: "Time To Move On", debuted on November 21, 2015.

In 2020, Mary Wilson received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Newspaper Publishers Association.
Mary Wilson passed away in February of 2021. Her single: "Why Can't We All Get Along", was released posthumously on March 5, 2021. The song was featured on a 2021 reissue of Wilson's 1979 solo debut entitled- Mary Wilson: Expanded Edition. More of her new music was released posthumously as she had plans to release a new album before her passing.
Florence Ballard Career & Life Post Supremes 👩🏼‍🎤:
On July 1, 1967, the day after her 24th birthday, Florence Ballard showed up inebriated during the group's third performance at the Flamingo and her stomach bulged under her suit. Angered, Berry Gordy ordered her to return to Detroit, and Cindy Birdsong (The Bluebells) officially replaced her, abruptly ending her tenure with The Supremes. On February 22, 1968, Florence Ballard and Motown Records negotiated for her release from the record label. Her attorney in the matter received a one-time payment of $139,804.94 in royalties and earnings from Motown records. As part of the settlement, Florence Ballard was advised not to promote herself by using her former membership in The Supremes.
In March 1968, Florence Ballard signed with ABC Records and released two unsuccessful singles: "It Doesn't Matter How I Say It (It's What I Say That Matters)" and "Love Ain't Love / Forever Faithful". After an album for the record label was shelved, her settlement money was depleted from The Chapmans' management agency, Talent Management, Inc. The agency had been led by Leonard Baun, the attorney who had helped to settle Florence Ballard's departure from Motown Records. Following news that Leonard Baun was facing multiple embezzlement charges, Florence Ballard fired him. She continued to perform as a solo artist. In January 1969,Florence Ballard performed at one of newly elected President Richard Nixon's inaugural balls. Florence Ballard was dropped by ABC records in 1970.
Florence Ballard would go on to battle alcoholism in the early 1970s leading to her marriage ending. In July 1971, Florence Ballard sued Motown Records for additional royalty payments she believed she was due to receive but she was defeated in court by Motown. In 1972, she moved into her sister Maxine's house. In 1974 Mary Wilson invited Florence Ballard to join The Supremes (with current line up of Cindy Birdsong and Scherrie Payne) onstage at Magic Mountain. Though Florence Ballard played tambourine, she did not sing and told Mary Wilson she had no ambition to sing any more. Later that year Florence Ballard's plight began to appear in newspapers as word of her welfare application leaked out. Around that time, she entered Henry Ford Hospital for rehab treatment. Following six weeks of treatment, she slowly recovered.
In early 1975, Florence Ballard received a settlement from her former attorney's insurance company. The money helped her buy a house on Shaftsbury Avenue in Detroit. Inspired by the financial success, Florence Ballard decided to return to singing and reconciled with her husband. Florence Ballard's first concert performance in more than five years took place at the Henry and Edsel Ford Auditorium in Detroit on June 25, 1975. Florence Ballard performed as part of the Joan Little Defense League and was backed by female Rock group: The Deadly Nightshade. Afterwards, she began receiving interview requests; Jet magazine was one of the first to report on Florence Ballard and her recovery. She would pass away in 1976 before she could achieve any more success in the music industry.
Florence Ballard's story has been referenced in a number of works by other artists. The 1980 song: "Romeo's Tune", from Steve Forbert's album: Jackrabbit Slim, is "dedicated to the memory of Florence Ballard". In his short story: "You Know They Got A Hell Of A Band", Stephen King, through the late disc jockey Alan Freed, includes Florence Ballard as one of the deceased artists who performs in a town called "Rock And Roll Heaven".
The Supremes Honors, Awards And Recognition🏅:
The Supremes were twice nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rhythm & Blues Recording ("Baby Love", 1965) and Best Contemporary Rock & Roll Group Vocal Performance ("Stop! In The Name Of Love", 1966), but never won a Grammy Award as a group.
The Supremes' original group lineup of Diana Ross-Mary Wilson-Florence Ballard lineup was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988.
The group received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1994.
The Supremes entered into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 1998.
Three of the group's songs were added to the Grammy Hall of Fame: "Where Did Our Love Go" and "You Keep Me Hangin' On" (both 1999) and "Stop! In The Name Of Love" (2001).
In 2004, Rolling Stone placed the group at number 97 on their list of the "100 Greatest Artists Of All Time".
The group (Diana Ross, Mary Wilson and Florence Ballard) was named as one of eight recipients to receive a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards in 2023.
The groups songs: "Stop! In The Name Of Love" and "You Can't Hurry Love", are among the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll.
The Supremes are notable for the influences they have had on black girl groups who have succeeded them in popular music including: The Three Degrees, The Emotions, The Pointer Sisters, En Vogue, TLC, Destiny's Child and Cleopatra.
Several fictional works have been published and produced that are based in part on the career of the group. The 1976 film: Sparkle, features the story of a Supremes-like singing trio called "Sister & The Sisters" from Harlem, New York. The film's score was composed by Curtis Mayfield, and the soundtrack album by Aretha Franklin was a commercial success. A remake of the film: Sparkle, was in development in the early 2000s with R&B singer Aaliyah as the lead, but the project was shelved when Aaliyah passed away in 2001. The Sparkle remake was eventually released in August 2012 and starred Jordin Sparks and Whitney Houston, in her final film role.
The 1981 Tony Award winning Broadway musical "Dearmgirls", and 2006 film of the same title, is loosely based on the history of The Supremes, and follows the story of The Dreams, an all-female singing trio. The "Dreamgirls" central character of Effie White, like Florence Ballard, is criticized for being overweight, and is fired from the group. The character of Lorrell Robinson was inspired by Mary Wilson. And the group's lead singer is loosely based on Diana Ross. Mary Wilson was a big fan, but Diana Ross was reportedly not happy with the musical and refused to see it.
In February 2020, a new play about Florence Ballard by Vincent Victoria entitled: Dreamgirl Deferred, premiered in Houston on the anniversary of her passing.

Diana Ross Honors, Awards And Recognition 🏅:
Diana Ross was named the "Female Entertainer Of The Century" by Billboard in 1976. Since her solo career began in 1970, Diana Ross has released 25 studio albums, numerous singles, and compilations that have sold more than 100 million records worldwide. She is the only female artist to have had number-one singles on the Billboard Hot 100 as a solo artist, as the other half of a duet, as a member of a trio, and as an ensemble member. In 2021, Billboard ranked her the 30th greatest Hot 100 artist of all time. Her hits as a Supreme and a solo artist combined put Diana Ross among the Top 5 artists on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart from 1955 to 2018.
She had a top 10 UK hit in every one of the last five decades, and sang lead on a top 75 hit single at least once every year from 1964 to 1996 in the UK, a period of 33 consecutive years and a record for any performer. In 1988, Diana Ross was inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of The Supremes, and is one of the rare performers to have two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. She was the recipient of a Special Tony Award in 1977, the Kennedy Center Honors in 2007, the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012 and 2023 (the latter as a member of The Supremes) and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016.
On January 24, 1985, Kaufman Astoria Studios held a dedication ceremony in Astoria, Queens to honor Diana Ross by naming Studio 4 at the studios after her. The Diana Ross Building served as an acknowledgement of Daina Ross' contribution in bringing the studio back to the forefront after being faced with possible demolition, through her involvement in The Wiz.
Berry Gordy asked Diana Ross to introduce The Jackson Five to the public in 1969. Eventually, public misunderstandings resulted in Diana Ross erroneously being given credit for the discovery of The Jackson 5. Berry Gordy decided that the misunderstanding was "good for business", so her "discovery" became a part of Motown Record's marketing and promotions plan for The Jackson 5. Consequently, their debut album was titled: Diana Ross Presents The Jackson 5. Motown Records producer Bobby Taylor claims to have discovered The Jacksons, though, singer Gladys Knight also makes the same claim. Even so, Diana Ross embraced the role and became a good friend of Michael Jackson, serving as another mother figure to him during his life.
As a member of The Supremes, her songs: "Stop! In The Name Of Love" and "You Can't Hurry Love" are listed among the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll. the Supremes entered into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 1998. In 2004, Rolling Stone placed the group at number 96 on their list of the "100 Greatest Artists of All Time".
In 2006, Diana Ross was one of 25 African-American women saluted at Oprah Winfrey's Legends Ball, a three-day celebration, honoring their contributions to art, entertainment, and civil rights.
In 2011, Diana Ross was named one of the Five Mighty Pop Divas of the Sixties along with Dusty Springfield, Aretha Franklin, Martha Reeves and Dionne Warwick.
"Motown: The Musical", is a Broadway musical that launched on April 14, 2013. It is the story of Berry Gordy's creation of Motown Records and his romance with Diana Ross. The character of Deena Jones in both the play and film versions of "Dreamgirls" was inspired by Diana Ross.
In 2023, Rolling Stone ranked Diana Ross at number 87 on its list of the 200 Greatest Singers of All Time.
