Frank Sinatra was so unique, not just because of the voice per se, but the way he put a song over, breaking conventionality, sometimes ahead, sometimes behind the beat, but in that effect, TELLING A STORY as he sung, not just singing words....Knowing exactly how to work with his band….it is a special talent that critics of his voice fail to see or realize, and the reason why, as commented on here many times, he OWNS his songs and no one else rarely can do justice to them once he has had a go at it!
I'll add that he sings like a man. He doesn't reach for all the notes. He doesn't even try to reach the notes. He keeps it as a man should sound, maybe so that men can sing his music too.
The muted trumpet behind Sinatra is played by Bobby Sherwood, a vastly talented musician, who played the guitar, trumpet, arranged for various bands and led his own big band.
Although I am a huge Sinatra fan, I recommend that you do yourself a favour and check out the Tony Bennet/Lady Gaga version of THE LADY IS A TRAMP, recorded when Tony was well into his nineties - ( 92... I believe). It is so good , that I do believe the great Frank Sinatra would have sincerely and publicly applauded them.
Oh, my god. Two genius. Frank Sinatra and Rita Hayworth. The entire scene practically without dialogs, but with a whole text being said only with their eyes and facials expressions. It took me to tears.
What a magical performance. Sinatra 's interprtation of a song was simply unique. Sinatra is the absolute artist, what ,a talent that will live for ever .
Absolutely. This is among my favorite stories of 'Classic Hollywood'. Though still a 'big name', Rita - arguably "The" pre-eminent screen Love Goddess of the previous decade - was in the inevitable 'downward' arc of her spectacular career. The billing also made perfect sense for this film, "Pal Joey": sandwiching Sinatra between Hayworth and the new 'queen' of the Columbia lot, Kim Novak. Just then approaching the height of her stardom, with Monroe in NY studying at the Actor's Studio, from '57-59 Novak was among the biggest female movie stars in the world. She had just won a battle with Columbia to be paid commensurate with her new star status. So at that moment, Novak had the clout to have 'demanded' she be billed above Hayworth. But from what I've read, Novak too had immense respect for Hayworth. Sinatra's deference to Hayworth was, as you say, a galant move that lent the entire film an air of class that's palpable still today. Hayworth was apparently very sweet to her 'successor', Novak. Although 'trouble' between the two had been predicted by the gossips, every account I've read affirms Hayworth and Novak got along wonderfully. No doubt Sinatra's preemptive gesture lessened any potential stress for Hayworth. In what was to be her second to last film for Columbia after nearly 2 decades, she was allowed to 'exit' her home Studio with dignity. Literally 'on top'. And the film was a hit, to boot. As Sinatra himself said: "Class with a capital 'K'!"
Fred Astaire said Rita Hayworth was one of his favorite dancing partners. he said she would learn dance routines first time around! She was absolutely gorgeous in her Hay Day! Sinatra must have been short. Dancing with Rita she's practically the same height, even though she has heals on.
of course, Sinatra included this song in every concert he ever sang...."We just can't leave this out ever, it's about one of my favorite girls".....is how he introduced it......
Frank Sinatra - The Lady is a tramp (Pal Joey, 1957) i never saw that in anything i saw in relation to musicals. but that's due to my hating musicals... that said, sinatra, akin to elvis, was geared to singing.. it was his bag, so to speak... so it was natural he should create a large sprawling music video, if you will... seduction songs. ummmmmmm.... the whole notion of a musical starring elvis or sinatra would suggest the entire perlocution was one big seduction scene..... i wonder if they got laid due to this penchant they had for crooning?
My favorite Sinatra song from his movie career (although "My Kind of Town" from "Robin and the Seven Hoods" comes close) and that backwards little kick as he exits with Rita just kills me.

June 8, 2024. I think the ultimate version of this song is when Frank sang the song with the great Ella Fitzgerald. there is a video on RUclips and I watch it. Probably a few times a month for the last 10 years I am 78 years old now. Grew up with Frank on the radio July was 10 when we got a television set. I don’t know what there is about this video except that if you want to see a melding of two amazing talents. I mean I can’t underestimate the power and the connection between these two personalities when they sing this amazing song. And I’ve read in some of the comments that people say this is the best version. But this is Frank’s best voice and best time of his life as an entertainer, I don’t think so. He needed another 10 maybe 15 years before his style really got the edge . I hope I’m not bothering you by going back to this video, but if you watch it, you’ll see the frame is simply having a good time swimming in the amazing voice of Ella Fitzgerald.
Reading this takes me back. The internet is an amazing thing for sure. The closest thing we have to a time machine. I used to ride around with my father in his work truck or his personal 🎉Cadillac, and he would play Sinatra more than anyone else. My father passed away at the age of 86. I miss much of what the world was, and I'm not that old, but I think things were just a bit better back then. Ella and Frank is indeed an amazing performance. Thanks for sharing your time and story.
Would not dare doubt that the Sinatra/Ella version remains unchallenged. However, one would suggest that the playful spontaneiety in this sequence from the 'Pal Joey' movie advances the narrative like gangbusters and remains unchallenged also.

I can sum it up in four words.
Frank Sinatra has class!

Even when Sinatra spoke, his voice was amazing!
The look on his face when they’re dancing, and she leans back and says “come now, beauty,” is one of the most subtle yet greatest looks ever.
