I was just lamenting Voivod’s lack of recognition on a metal site yesterday. One of my very favourite bands. And still releasing amazing stuff decades later.
Yes! Finally someone talking enthusiastically about Voivöd on YT. So criminally underrated in terms of wider audience recognition. And another YES! for recommending Mekong Delta. Their "Dances of Death" album made my day back in the day.

Thank you Sarah, your reviews are the best! Voivod is incredible and people need to know. I've been trying to get my friends to listen to them for years now. Dimension Hatross, and Nothing face are my favorite albums.
This album got me into Voivod when I picked it up on cassette back in my high school days (graduated in 88)! This is still my favorite Voivod album and I make sure to get and listen to them all! It's insane they aren't in the rock and roll hall of fame. Oh and it's Brain Scan, not Brain Scar! Great review!
100% agreement on this review. This album was incredibly forward thinking for it’s time. An absolute classic in my opinion. VoiVod is my most listened top artist on Spotify every year. 🤘🏼🤘🏼
Great video. Voivod has been groundbreaking since day 1. Genre-defying and just incredible, every release. Dimension Hatross is without question the pinnacle release, and the tour for that album was simply amazing. RIP Piggy. A true innovator.
Saw them live twice. First time I saw them was in 1986. They opened for Celtic Frost. About 20 people in the audience. After the show Away approached me and asked if I knew where to get some weed. I wish I did but it was dry everywhere. Second time was Dimension Hatross tour.
Seeing this band live for the first time last year was a life changing event. So inspiring and the last album "The Wake" is up there with the best material they've written.
One of my favorite metal acts of all time. Completely different from anybody else you’ve ever listened to. Virtually no bad albums (although the earliest 2 are a bit difficult to listen to due to the production). No two albums sound alike and their musical style varies from thrash to hard rock to industrial metal, yet is all unmistakably Voivod. I was blown away by them when I first bought Nothingface via Columbia Record Club back in the day and been a fan ever since.
Great album . Voivod are completely unique . being a French speaker i was lucky enough to meet Away before their gig at the "temple of Boom" in LEEDS England on their last tour , shared a spliff and had a chat in French . it was as if we'd known each other forever...WEIRD... but then again its flipping' VOIVOD . totally cool experience , totally cool dude. Great band.Always been a fan of their discordant, dissonant sounds- punk, proggy, trippy metal. They were definitely a stand out during the 80s thrash metal dayz.
Voivod has got to be one of the most original metal/rock bands in the past 4 decades. I pretty much enjoy everything they have put out. Also, great call on Mekong Delta. Big fan since their first album, the most recent one is a beast.
Probably my second favourite album. It took me a while to get as well. I actually don't know most of the track names. I always listen to the whole thing. A kind of people I can't describe.....they got a number between their eyes......

Target Earth, Post Society and The Wake are really good, on par with most of their output and only behind the trio of albums Killing Technology, Dimension Hatross and NothingFace IMO. Honestly, like with any Voivod record they need time digest (maybe not Post Society so much which is more straight forward), but it is super rewarding.

Voivod has been my favorite band ever since I found my dads "Nothingface" album when I was about 9 years old. The opening riff of the "Nothingface" track got me hooked immediately. My highschool final project for Recording class was a cover of the first 1:30 of technocratic manipulators all done by me (still have it too 😋). So I guess Voivod could also be partly responsible for why I play the instruments I play.
One of the great albums of my youth. Seen Voivod at least 10 times since they toured for this album. They're still putting out great music. Dead Brain Cells outta Canada was killer too. Thanks Banger🤘

This episode kicks all of the ass. Sarah, thank you so much for all of the love and research into an all timer of a record, not to mention Canada's second best band. Rush is first, DUH!
One last thingy, we had absolutely no money, never really did, even today. Back then we were touring and back home going back on wealthfare basically, the only time we had a little bit of moeny is when we sign with Mechanics/MCA for Nothingface, that is.
I bought this on release, scratched the vinyl the same day and have loved it, including the scratch ever since. Killing Technology is also amazing, as is most of what they've ever put out. Away's concepts were awesome.
This album was a game changer, it's not hyperbolic to say, there was nothing like this at that period of time. Tribal Convictions blew me away on the first listen, but with repeated listens, the excellence of the entire release became apparent. Nice review!!!
It's really one of those albums with so much of its own personality you can never forget it. If you're in the mood for more idiosyncratic Quebecois prog thrash, I highly recommend Obliveon's "From This Day Forward" (think the best of Voivod mixed with the best of Megadeth). This hit the spot, more of these deep dives into classic albums, please!
I bought the CD way back in 1988 (I was 16 at the time) because of the cover -- fell in love with it immediately. Was so different from everything else that was being recorded at the time. Still brilliant after all these years. --- R.I.P. Piggy ---
Also - I only recently discovered Mekong Delta -- not sure how I missed them over so many years. I agree with Sarah's recommendation -- I am really digging their stuff.
Ok, back after checking out Heir Apparent "Graceful Inheritance" -- I didn't like it. Way too "power-metal" (especially don't care for vocalist), and even though they try to sound like Iron Maiden, they don't pull it off.
Great review from one of my best album of all time. This album is so catchy, so creative, so brutal. Just let you know about a mistake on one title (since you know all the words and riffs of Dimension Hatröss ;) At 6:16 you say "Brain Scar", but this one (one of my favorite song) is called: "Brain Scan". I'm sure you know it anyway. And finally, thanks for your suggestions on similar genre. I'll look forward to these. Cheers!
Voivod! WAY BEYOND THEIR TIME! Augmented thrash metal. Augmented shamanistic psychedelic head banging meditative future dwelling off grid freight train of deRailing spirals within spirals!
voivod is the greatest band in the galaxy i fucking love them it's nice to see some recognition i went nuts playing air guitar and singing alone when that macrosolutions to megaproblems clip started my favorite currently is angel rat which imo is underrated as hell and simply perfect all the tracks but killing technology dimension hatross and nothingface are also all equally perfect i love them so much i wish they were metallica rich and it all started with me when one day i listened to dimension hatross and thought jesus this is the worst band ever oh boy i could never imagine that once it clicked i would worship them
Always happy to see Voivod get more praise and exposure, they're my favorite metal band of all time. And I'd love to see/hear you talk more about Mekong Delta, they're a big influence of mine and I rarely find people who are even familiar with them.
Holy shit, what a great idea.... Yes, Mekong Delta...Erich Zahn etc. Even by today's standards this stuff is still very progressive.... Funny you mentioned them, during the recent lockdown I revisited their music. and yes, seems like hardly anybody heard about them.
Been a Voi Vod head somce 1994...Outer Limits....Angel Rat....and Nothingface are the jams...in my opinoin....very unique...made thier own stomp boxes...hadba different sound and thats what i like.
Nothingface was easier to get into, and it is my favorite Voivod album. I agree that Dimension Hatros takes more listens to appreciate properly. I always thought that they were thrash on RUSH. They deserved a more dynamic bassist although Blacky did have a unique bass presence.
the rigid heaviness of Blacky its what makes this band unique, they had a more fluid "progressive" bass player on The Outer Limits and the intensity is clearly low compared to Nothingface. Listen to the Angel Rat demos with Blacky on it and the difference is notable.
Humble brag, I got them immediately when dimension hatross was released. I think it was all the post punk, hardcore, noise rock I'd already become familiar with. Saw them at Blondie's in Detroit, '87 or '88, fucking amazing.
Don't really need a video to tell me Dimension Hatross is one of the best metal albums ever written. Technocratic Manipulators is one of the best metal songs ever written. And Piggy's tone on the intro strike. Stunning. I was lucky to hear this in 1988.
The name of the album isn't meant to be pronounced in english. Is goes more like, in french, "dimension atroce" which would translate for atrocious dimension.
I don't want people to be mislead by the difficult/progressive label. Tribal Convictions is a straight up sweet pop hit. Like a space metal Teen Spirit.
Voi Vod should be credited for pushing thrash/extreme/experimental music into realms of progressive dissonance and chaos that has seeped into in future generations. Voi Vods influence is there directly and indirectly even if people don't even know where it comes from. They were influenced by a band that was influenced by a band that was influenced by Voi Vod.

Killing Technology, Dimension Hatross, Nothingface and their self-titled albums are my favorites.
I've owned this album since it came out. it's my favourite thrash album of all time. It's a jazz punk psychedelic concept prog thrash masterpiece.
Fuck yeah saw them live at the Foufs. Such an under-rated band.
The first CD I ever bought, an absolute classic
Voivod is so unique , not the same as everyone else. They do their own thing. 2023 and they are still way different than anybody else out there.
Absolute classic and probably my fave one from them, 10/10.
Those Heir Apparent and Mekong Delta LPs are killer, I was hoping they were there for a reason!
I don't have this one, but I love Voivod. such a weird-ass band. kind of like a thrashy, sci-fi Descendents trying to cover Rush.
Lol love that description.
There's a video of Dave Grohl talking about Voivod.
Stephen Egerton digs Voivod. Maybe you already knew that. Descendents circa '87- ALL are totally a pop-punk Voivod.
This one happens to be their best one.
Voivod blew my mind as a teen in the 80s. Legends!
Enjoyed your commentary. Being that your org is based in Canada, have you ever done a video about Beyond Possession? Criminally underrated crossover.
DH was my introduction to Voivod shortly after it was released. The Nothingface followed, and I’ve been hooked ever since.
Been a Voi Vod head somce 1994...Outer Limits....Angel Rat....and Nothingface are the jams...in my opinoin....very unique...made thier own stomp boxes...hadba different sound and thats what i like.
Voivod, with Melvins, are maybe the most underrated band in all metal.
You make a good point
1:44 haha, It happened to me too. I couldn't get this tape out of my walkman for a few months, I had to listen to it everyday.
Tribal Convictions is such a kickass song
Nothingface was easier to get into, and it is my favorite Voivod album. I agree that Dimension Hatros takes more listens to appreciate properly. I always thought that they were thrash on RUSH. They deserved a more dynamic bassist although Blacky did have a unique bass presence.
the rigid heaviness of Blacky its what makes this band unique, they had a more fluid "progressive" bass player on The Outer Limits and the intensity is clearly low compared to Nothingface. Listen to the Angel Rat demos with Blacky on it and the difference is notable.
@@GabAssbreaker Facts! Blackey's punk dirty tone is what make, for example, songs like Tornado being so insanely heavy.
I have just listened the whole album. I see them live twice and yes they are fantastic.
Nice to hear the folks in Slint and Sonic Youth dug Dimension Hatröss. Makes sense
gotta love Voïvod! still so happy that Away designed my old band's logo
Gotta give them another chance. Only got to listening to them when Newsted joined the band and they performed on Ozzfest 2003.
Easily one of my all time favorites. Simply a work of genius!
Nothing Face is my fav, but very glad to see Voivod get some well deserved love. Nice one!
Make Sarah review all Voivod albums
We could ask.
seconded.
Great review - but out of reverence I have to correct “Brain Scar” to “Brain Scan” 😀🤘. You were spot on with that Mekong Delta recommendation. Thanks!
Great choice!!!
I don't want people to be mislead by the difficult/progressive label. Tribal Convictions is a straight up sweet pop hit. Like a space metal Teen Spirit.
haha thats an interesting stretch
THANK YOU!!!!
Love this album but my favorite will always be Killing technology
Voi Vod should be credited for pushing thrash/extreme/experimental music into realms of progressive dissonance and chaos that has seeped into in future generations. Voi Vods influence is there directly and indirectly even if people don't even know where it comes from. They were influenced by a band that was influenced by a band that was influenced by Voi Vod.
