Yep! They did and I was at the spectrum show back in january "90. Faith No More was out of this world and almost stole the whole show. Soundgarden were a little too early with their grunge soud and bored the crowd. Then Voivod were awesome. But Faith No More... Wow! What a show that was!
One of my all-time favorite bands. You can pick any other song from the Nothingface album and it will be a winner. There is a vast catalogue in addition with zillions of winners!
dimension hatross absolutely blew my mind when i was 14,amazing band and have been listening to them since.no one sounds like voivod and they should be bigger than what they are, first person i've seen react to them andy well in mate
Been listening to VoiVod since their first album War and Pain way back in '84 and they've always been adamantly themselves. They do not sound like anyone else and it's lovely.
YES!!!!!! Finally some Voivod. True pioneers of "space-tech" metal. Very interesting chord/time changes that instill feelings of dread and interest all at the same time. Ever so slightly PUNK. Thinking man's band. That's my description and I'm sticking to it.......
the original album was recorded in DDD which was really odd back in the day... check out the original version, I like that because it is so clean/almost robotic sounding which fit their lyrical flair at the time perfectly
That video was a recent performance of the old song. That was Chewy on guitar (who replaced the deceased 'Piggy') and Rocky on the bass (who replaced 'Blacky')
I believe you're correct. I saw that particular show, seeing Rush live for the first time, at Maple Lear Gardens - drove down from Guelph. Terry Brown produced their Angel Rat album - around that same time period. That's from memory around 1990/91, when decent music was still being put out across most genres.
Im the one who submitted this video. You’re the one who compared them to Metallica in the other voivod video. That’s why I mentioned Metallica. They are definitely influenced by Rush and they even toured with rush at one point. There are longer songs but I know you like the live stuff when you can get it that’s why I chose that song. I still feel like you need more. like Rush they have a lot of different sounds over the years. my name is Joe Blowseph you can say that on the channel :)
It’s so much fun seeing your reaction to this, Voivod completely entranced me at around 18 years of age when they came out with their fourth album, Dimension Hatross (which contains your previous Voivod reaction song, “Tribal Convictions”), and then their follow up album, Nothingface (which contains this song) came out shortly after, and was just another Dimension Hatross, except with PERFECT sound production; in other words, one of the best damn albums of all times. I highly recommend you give Nothingface a bunch of listens, and then skip forward to the stuff they’ve done in the last decade (albeit, with two different members from the originals), because it is every bit as brilliant as the Nothingface era, especially their 2018 album, the Wake- OMG, it’s mind blowingly good- so glad you discovered Voivod 😎😎😎
And Andrew, you mentioned that X-ray Mirror was too short? I strongly suggest “Jack Luminous” from their Outer Limits album- so friggin amazing, and definitely not short 😀
When i was 14 15, i changed my handwriting to replicate away killing technology liner lyrics. To say they have been an influence in my life is an understatement. To this day, while my handwriting has evolved from time to time, I slow down and write in that style.
One thing that you will notice os that, except for the first 2 albums, each of their albums have a complete different yet recognizable sound to them. You having Killing Technology which is followed by Dimension Hatross, which while not sounding like KT but rather a new chapter, kinda hard to explain but each evolves from the one before it(albums I mean) but no 2 albums could be considered like part of a dual set.
I listen to soooo much Viovod in my early teens and Away influenced my overall style especially the weird fills and time sigs thx for an excellent Xmas vid Andrew the best to you and your family 🤘😁✌️🧐
And by: King Crimson, early Pink Floyd, Van Der Graaf Generator, Gentle Giant, Killing Joke, Bauhaus, Dead Kennedys, Discharge, Venom, Black Sabbath, JG Thirwell and many others.
Anyone else notice that Canadian bands all have a thing with tritones and weird time signatures? Voivod, Rush, Nomeansno, they all do it. Am I leaving anyone out?
been waiting for years on this! (but no, I am not the mystery guy, or at least I dont think I am)... they started out as one of the fastest bands out there during the genesis of thrash (early 80s) but just had this different edge to them (especially lyrically). "the voivod" was a psychic entity that would go on adventures and explorations.... wild stuff for the time... I would have recommended 'Tribal Convictions" from 1989's "Dimension Hatross" as a starting point (edit: hah! it was the second song)... The album run of Dimension Hatross, Nothingface, Angel Rat and The Outer Limits is one of the best ever in metal as far as I am concerned, none of them sound at all alike as albums but all sound like Voivod... in fact the later 2 are more like metal pink floyd... so if you remotely likes this, check them out.... interesting history for these Canadian legends ! Want a longer song? Easy... "Jack Luminous" 17 minutes !!! and it does not get old, please check it out !
Metallica`s Jason Newsted was part of the band from 2002 to 2008, so that`s for the Metallica connection. Phil Anselmo from Pantera is also a big fan... Lemmy and Bruce Dickinson have also been seen with Voivod shirt... cult band, you got that right! Cheers from Canada.
you go on about Alice and Chains and Soundgarden... who always point to King's X ! wake up man.... you got to voivod.. get into King's X, trust me on this
Definitely great musicianship but I'll admit it's not immediately appealing upon hearing for the first time. Maybe it's the vocals that are my problem.
I could listen to straight instrumental versions of these guys. I am not a fan of the signing (don't like the tone and don't find it is a good signer).
Voivod is completely original. My favorite underground band. The Outer Limits (1993) is one of the best prog metal albums.
Saw that tour in a tiny club, with about 100 people.
Voivod toured with Rush on this album's touring cycle.
They also headlined a tour after this album with Faith No More and Soundgarden opening.
Yep! They did and I was at the spectrum show back in january "90. Faith No More was out of this world and almost stole the whole show. Soundgarden were a little too early with their grunge soud and bored the crowd. Then Voivod were awesome.
But Faith No More... Wow! What a show that was!
I have a deep love for Voivod, amazingly original and influential band. Seen them live many times - an awesome experience!
One of my all-time favorite bands. You can pick any other song from the Nothingface album and it will be a winner. There is a vast catalogue in addition with zillions of winners!
💯👌
dimension hatross absolutely blew my mind when i was 14,amazing band and have been listening to them since.no one sounds like voivod and they should be bigger than what they are, first person i've seen react to them andy well in mate
Glad to see Voivod on the channel! Really opened my eyes up to progressive elements in metal in the late 80s & early 90s . 🤘🏼🔥🔥🤘🏼
Wow, this takes me back to a very good time in my life. Nothingface is definitely worth your time
Interesting to see someone listen and appreciate Voivod for the first time! You pretty much nailed it. They are one of my all time favorite bands.
the original album was recorded in DDD which was really odd back in the day... check out the original version, I like that because it is so clean/almost robotic sounding which fit their lyrical flair at the time perfectly
michel is a beast of a drummer
Rush w/ Voivod happened in 1990 😎
That video was a recent performance of the old song. That was Chewy on guitar (who replaced the deceased 'Piggy') and Rocky on the bass (who replaced 'Blacky')
Fun fact: The original guitarist, Denis D'Amour, used to play Rush records backwards, and make riffs out of what he heard.
Ridiculously tight band. Influencial and original! Some more Voivod please. 😊
I saw Voivod here in Mexico on 2005 with Testament and Alcatrazz...! Best concert in my life! ❤
You can't teach Away's drumming, he's on a whole different plane
I saw Voi Vod in 87 in Pomona Ca. They were different then. The played with Bulldozer and M.O.D.
They're fans of Rush and prog in general! They had Terry Brown (Rush's producer from Fly By Night to Signals) produce their album Angel Rat
They opened for Rush on the Presto tour, I think.
Check out the rest of their catalogue! They are amazing! ^_^
TO THE DEATH!! !M!

Saw them last night 3/24/24 and Away is insane. He is effortless, smiling and didn't miss a beat even after the monitor fell on his left arm. Tight.
And Andrew, you mentioned that X-ray Mirror was too short? I strongly suggest “Jack Luminous” from their Outer Limits album- so friggin amazing, and definitely not short 😀

Voivods song Jack luminous is a 17 min song that goes through many styles. Well worth the listen

So good! Definitely throwing him into the deep end this time haha but also definitely more indicative of their sound.
Voivods sound can not be replicated. Way way way ahead of their time.
You should check out their 1st album it will blow your mind
Yeah I really like this
I listen to soooo much Viovod in my early teens and Away influenced my overall style especially the weird fills and time sigs thx for an excellent Xmas vid Andrew the best to you and your family 🤘😁✌️🧐
Mega happy you are doing Voivod sp happy to see the memory is alive
Another band with great drumming, New model Army. 40 yrs of music, plenty of tracks to pick from
am proud to be from the same place on earth where these guys are! saw them opening fo Rush!
Voivod were for sure influenced by Rush, Yes and King Crimson they've talked about it in the past
And by: King Crimson, early Pink Floyd, Van Der Graaf Generator, Gentle Giant, Killing Joke, Bauhaus, Dead Kennedys, Discharge, Venom, Black Sabbath, JG Thirwell and many others.
Great band, got several albums. Could we have a reaction to Flo Mounier from Cryptopsy, he's amazing and been doing it for 30 years or so.
Check out their song Tornado for an early thrash ripper.
Will do!
OMG! My favourite band since 1988!
Michael Ackerfeldt of Opeth declared that they are "The best band in the world".
Anyone else notice that Canadian bands all have a thing with tritones and weird time signatures? Voivod, Rush, Nomeansno, they all do it. Am I leaving anyone out?

I don't hear the Rush connection but that was some interesting punk/art/prog.
Yup bit more arty and not poppy
Metallica`s Jason Newsted was part of the band from 2002 to 2008, so that`s for the Metallica connection. Phil Anselmo from Pantera is also a big fan... Lemmy and Bruce Dickinson have also been seen with Voivod shirt... cult band, you got that right! Cheers from Canada.
Next suggestion from Voivod- Synchro Anarchy
Listen to NoMeansNo from Canadia🤘
band from my place so nice 🤟
there is only one Voivod
Experimental metal jazz
you go on about Alice and Chains and Soundgarden... who always point to King's X ! wake up man.... you got to voivod.. get into King's X, trust me on this
Voivod's earlier material leaned toward eclectic thrash (preferred by this fan) whereas they evolved into more of a prog metal band (unfortunately!).
Definitely great musicianship but I'll admit it's not immediately appealing upon hearing for the first time. Maybe it's the vocals that are my problem.
Yeah that seems to be the gate that keeps away potential fans but if you can get used to it, it doesnt stand as a distraction to the music
Unlike a lot of singers, he doesn’t lose his French accent when he sings. That is what gives him a unique sound and vocal style…
I could listen to straight instrumental versions of these guys. I am not a fan of the signing (don't like the tone and don't find it is a good signer).
They were definitely heavily influenced by Rush, but they never played with them.
they did open for Rush around " The Outer limits" album
@@unholy48 oh. Wow. I did not know that.
@@davea5794and Angel rat was produced by Terry Brown!
@@GoDUsopp-gk2fx I did know Terry Brown produced Angel Rat. Great album, BTW.
Probot is great! Definitely check it out, especially if you like Dave Grohl
