Absolutely true. People tend to forget that during the golden years Maiden's writing team was a 3-headed monster of Harris, Smith, and Dickinson. When Adrian left after 7th Son, the next 2 albums lacked a certain spark to them. A friend of my said they're writing was becoming derivative. And once Bruce left it went all down hill. I don't think Maiden's latest crop of albums would be as goods as they are if Adrian didn't come back. Hell, he even helped out Bruce during his solo career and turned it around.
It's really interesting to see how SiT has grown in popularity over the years. When I was getting into Maiden in the late 90's it was considered a bit "soft", but I always really liked the atmosphere the keyboards leant it. Check out Hawkwind's "Chronicle of the Black Sword" for a similar sound.
@@Tmuk2 If my memory is good this album was mixed in New York city. The only one.I love Seven son and early albums also of course.I lover Number of the beast a lot.
1. Seventh son 2. Piece of mind 3.killers 4. Powerslave 5. Number of the beast Seventh son is an absolute masterpiece. I can close my eyes lay back and it puts me in a trance, kind of like I’m on a journey floating above the clouds in a magical mystical land. Somewhere in time is good too, so is book of souls.
My opinion exactly, I rate Piece of Mind 1 spot ahead of Seventh Son, but Seventh Son is for sure the most magical experience. The intros to Moonchild, Infinite Dreams, and The Prophecy are beautiful. Needless to mention the masterpiece that is the title track.
Seventh Son is seated at the perfect crossroads between 80s pop, traditional heavy metal, and progressive rock. No one element of the three outshines the others, and they exist in total harmony. I think it's Maiden's most creative output, and perhaps their last truly great record.
The Master Of Puppets of the Maiden catalog. The best of their entire career In my opinion, Piece Of Mind and Powerslave being number 2 and 3. Somewhere In Time was also their peak, Seventh Synth although a decent album, was the beginning of their decline in quality. I can't listen to anything past Fear Of The Dark. The Blaze Bailey bullshit is the absolute worst and Brave New World and onward is just boring, repetitive, repetitive chorus repeats, Jannik Gers (can't stand that piece of shit), Bruce's voice is irritating as fuck, he sings to the melody, mirroring every note of the guitar parts way too fucking much and it just flat out sucks fat cocks. "Gates Of Tomorrow" from Dance Of Death is the only song from the 2000's that sounds somewhat reminiscent of 80's Maiden, especially in the chorus part of the song.
@@LETSTALKENTERTAINMENT I agree. Maiden is a band and the Clansman and Sign of the cross are classics regardless of who sings them. Blaze did justice to those songs on the studio recordings.
@@grvc1001 Lightning Strikes Twice is fantastic. Blaze is really overly hated to the point where I'm sure it's a bandwagon that few actually understand. Virtual 11 is a good album and no one can take that from a real Maiden fan.
@@gabolujan While it certainly has more than one good song, I certainly agree that with as many good Maiden songs as there are it is hard to place on a top list.
Seventh Son is the number one for me personally.. only because I was introduced to it in my teenage years and it completely blew me away. It still takes me back to circa 1993/4 when I first heard it
Im not a Maiden Fan. But my favourite is "Somewhere in Time". Love the Sound. Stranger in a strange Land is my favourite Maiden Song with a great Solo.
Based on the sound alone, Somewhere in Time is the best one. On other factors, I choose other albums but it definitely had the best sound. A lot of this is because guitarist Adrian Smith (who wrote a lot of the material) helped bring in a new sound which was much more lush than the others. The sound was also augmented by the novel sound of synths (which previously they had said they would never use). On following albums (especially after the Seventh Son album), they opted to go back to more of their "classic" sound but your ears do not deceive you - this was as good as it got (in that way). And I'm also partial to Stranger in a Strange Land. Just a really well-written and dramatic song.
One day a couple of years ago, I listened to the entire Iron Maiden discography from their debut all the way to The Book of Souls all in one day. That's how strong their albums really are.
Too me 7th son of a 7th son...is their Peak.....just absolutely fantastic , their fullest sound , and a furocious balance , too me its my special one...Peace☺️

I've been a fan of Maiden since Number of The Beast was unleashed upon the world in 1982, but when I first heard Piece of Mind in a record store the following year, I was instantly sold on that one. 1 Piece of Mind 2 The Number of The Beast 3 Powerslave 4 Killers 5 Brave New World 6 Somewhere In Time 7 Iron Maiden 8 Seventh Son of a Seventh Son 9 Senjutsu 10 A Matter of Life and Death 11 Dance of Death 12 The Book of Souls 13 Fear of The Dark 14 The X Factor 15 The Final Frontier 16 No Prayer For The Dying 17 Virtual XI
Was just jamming out to Maiden and this video came up as a suggestion. How cool. My top would include: 01. Piece of Mind 02. Number of the Beast 03. Powerslave 04. Killers 05. Somewhere In Time 06. Iron Maiden Really, depending on my mood for the day, any of these can be number 1 as I just love the old school Maiden. The newer stuff is great as well, just does not rank as high for me as the older stuff. Thanks for the ranking Pete, much appreciated!
as a fan since the earlier days.. to me seemed like there were more "filler" songs on that one. If it weren't for Aces and Rime.. that album I think would be ranked very low for most fans.
Ryan T Not at all. Title track, Losfer Words, Back in the Village, The Duelists, and Flash of the Blade are all top shelf Maiden, in the opinion of someone into them since I first heard Wrathchild.
@n n i haven't listened to any of the remasters.. I'm scared to by all i've been reading from others... and honestly, I have all the originals so no need. but i feel for new fans and that's what they get?...
Took me a while to comment but I I don't want to miss the opportunity to both congratulate you on this ranking and express my absolute love for my favorite band of all time. There are no words to express how much Maiden means to me or to do justice to how I felt when I was able to finally see them live on 2008. I dig all their albums but Somewhere in Time and Seventh Son of a Seventh Son are my favorites. Those two albums are the first two cassettes I ever bought (yes that was the format I could purchase down here in Guatemala at the time - still have them) and the reason why I love heavy metal. The album covers caught my attention, guess that's what Eddie is there for and then the music was just mind blowing. Keep cranking such good material Mr. Pardo, you are our Embassador of Metal my good Sir.
My 6 favorite Iron maiden albums in my opinion is: 6. Powerslave 5. Somewhere In Time 4. The Number Of The Beast 3. Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son 2. Iron Maiden (Selftitled debut album) 1. Piece Of Mind.🤩🤘
The self-titled debut for me. Later albums by them were technically better, had more instrumentation and bigger soundstages as they grew like a monster, but that debut was such a blast, and it didnt come off the turntable. my neighbours at the time grew to love Maiden too. one night they chucked a brick through my window so they could hear it better, bless 'em.
There is no "worst" albums by Maiden, they're all phenomenal albums even the Blaze Bailey ones too, great ranking Pete. Now we need the Ranking the Studio MOTÖRHEAD!
Maybe there is no worst album. But I think there is at least one song that all Maiden fans agree is sh**: The Angel and the Gambler. And I think this song is a blueprint for the difference between the early and the later albums since "Seven Son": A little bit to much refrain.
I saw Maiden live in concert back in 83 on their Piece Of Mind tour. My favorite lp however is Killers which I purchased way back in early 81, Dianno's vocals are not great but are perfectly matched to Maiden, I guess the same way Ozzy's vocals were to Sabbath. My first Maiden lp purchased was the debut way back in June 1980, the record store proprietor had written " England's number one heavy metal band" on the cellophane so I took a chance and purchased the lp never having heard anything from them...didn't regret it!
"No Prayer for The Dying" is so damn underrated! It was a breath of fresh air, stripped down and putting the focus on riffs, hooks and fun. For all the shade it gets I go back to It a whole lot more then something like "A Matter of Life and Death" that has some good stuff but is just a chore to get through at times.
I feel the opposite. No prayer to me sounds unfocused and sloppy (with a few good songs, mind you) where as AMOLAD sounds inspired and focused. I also felt Fear of the Dark was a lot better than No prayer.
People hate the NPFTD because they are musically very limited in their minds and don't understand anything that's not Epic/Progressive or Death/Thrash metal. They don't like real Heavy Metal/Hard Rock "from the streets". Most of them are Pantera and Slayer fans. That's only reason why they don't understand one of the best Heavy Metal albums.
@@alexma321 To be honest, I'm glad you like that album, but your mindset about why people like or dislike albums is way off. I like Fear of the Dark a lot - it's no piece of mind, but it was my first Maiden album. I also dislike Kiss, but many of the bands I love cite them as an influence. Being open minded doesn't include everyone agreeing with you. Accept that and move on sir.
I prefer 90-92 over 86-88 maiden. I find their proggy albums to be boring at least, so i really enjoy more the stripped hard rock from the early 90s. I know i am part of minority, but thats how i am.

Yes, it's reassuring to know that there are others who appreciate 21st century Maiden also Paschendale off of D.O.D is one of their greatest songs and more than holds its own to any of their classics😈
A Matter of Life & Death for me defines the old Maiden and the new Maiden, it's a masterpiece journey from the first track to the last track...it's almost like I'm watching a film by listening to this...it feels like a Greatest Hits album but not really, if that makes any sense

Glad to see someone else that has Piece of Mind as their favorite. I think that ranking Maiden albums for me is a very difficult task, cause the top albums are constantly changing. But PoM just has a special place in my heart.
Don’t have any of their later releases, but from what I know, here’s my 2 bits. 1. Powerslave 2. Piece of Mind 3. Number of the Beast 4. Iron Maiden 5. Killers 6. Somewhere in Time 7. Seventh Son And there you have it.
It’s a solid list...I’ve always thought Powerslave was their most confident release, they just sounded so sure and clear about what they were playing on that one.
Iron Maiden have always been my favourite heavy metal band. I love all their albums, but there are some songs that I can't stand ( especially Holly smoke, Woman in uniform, Run to the hills). My top 10 IM albums are: 1) Iron Maiden - my friend was waiting for me after school, sitting on the ruined wall of medieval castle with walkman in his hand. When I put on headphones I was instantly hooked. Great memories! 2) Somewhere in time - I studied history, so I'm caught soooomewheeeeere in tiiiiiiiimeeeee... 3) Killers 4) Piece of mind 5) Powerslave 6) Seventh son... 7) Number of the beast 8) A matter of life and death 9) Brave new world 10) Fear of the dark

All the albums in my opinion are solid. Being a younger Maiden fan, I’m a big fan of the Brave New World to present day era of albums. I would also say that The X Factor is a massively underrated album which doesn’t get enough credit (this is my opinion). However my personal 100% favourite is Peace Of Mind!! Even so UP THE IRONS!!🤘🤘🤘
Had never heard much from the Seventh Son album before I went and seen Maiden in concert a few years back. They played that album in its entirety at the show, and it quickly became one of my favorite albums from the band. Incredible songs to go with an incredible story.
They've played the majority of 7th Son's songs live, but never the album in its entirety. "Only The Good Die Young" still remains never-played-live song to this day.
@@MosoKaiser In a perfect world, we would get a setlist that includes "The Nomad", "Alexander the Great", "Mother Russia", "Only the Good Die Young" "The Prophecy", and "Empire of the Clouds"
For me this is easy: I II III IV and out. Disclaimer: I saw Maiden in 1980 opening for Kiss. It was an absolut shocker. Nobody had ever heard anything this fast and precise. Will never forget it.
@@SwissCheese667 Yeah, you're right. Powerslave is not a bad album. But we were already in 1984, and in the meantime Metallica & Slayer had happened. At least for me personally, the metal world wasn't the same anymore after "Kill em all" was released.
As a senior Maiden fan of 54 I would have to agree with this, the sound, vibe, attitude, speed and precision of the first two albums had been unseen at that time and seeing them live on the Killers tour in 1981 is still the best gig I've ever been to. Number of the beast was also a monumental follow up to killers and that's where it ended for me until the book of souls.
Pete, you were in my RUclips feed, pretty cool. Love Maiden! You know that. First time I watched you, I enjoyed. I'll keep you in my prayers Piece of Mind!
Who else kind of loves Fear of the Dark? I know Smith isn't involved and you can't compare it to their 80's masterpieces, but the songwriting is strong, if a bit different. To me it's the most underrated album in their discography.
I bought "killers" with my allowance money on cassette tape when I was a preteen... along with "british steel", "blizzard of oz" , "back in black", "heaven and hell" and "fair warning". I feel so very lucky to have had these incredible albums to help me through all of the shit my life was going through at that time

That's funny re: Killers. I had a similar experience. I had a gift certificate to a local record store and was taken by the album cover. I asked the cashier if the album was any good. He said it wasn't worth the vinyl it was printed on. I bought it anyway based on that cover and was an instant fan. I was 16 at the time and was just getting into metal via Sabbath. Piece of Mind is also my #1. Keep up the good work, Pete!

Very close to my own selection. Especially No. 1, 3 and 6. By the way: are you not scare while listening 'Seven Son Of The Seven Son'. That record really scare me.
Glib No. There are material obsessions that you choose. I though about music imagination, rather. I feel a real hell inside that record. Great album, dude, but I have to avoid after few times listening.
Your recollection of purchasing “Killers” was exactly what happened to me. In my case I was going to buy “Signals” from Rush until I saw the Killers artwork. I had to have it and that is really what started and drove me down my journey into the metal rabbit hole. I never got into any release after 7th son. I never really tried tho tbh.
signals was a big shock to me I thought I had bought an ultravox album ..but That's ok I love ultravox too 👍🏻☮❤and rush and maiden and sabbath and and and......😊👍🏻

Somewhere in time I love every track, great guitar work and album cover art so detailed and every vocal chorus was singable and memorable. After that I would rather pull favorite tracks from other albums.
The music from the Blaze era is awesome, FAR better than No Prayer for the Dying or Fear of the Dark. The Sign of the Cross and The Clansman are still played live to this day. A Matter of Life and Death is an interesting album. Very progressive. It took time for it to grow on me but now it's one of my favorites. My favorite? Tie between Somewhere in Time and Seventh Son. I'm a drummer in my 4th Iron Maiden tribute.
It's their best since the reunion. In the top five of all time. 1 Somewhere in Time 2 Piece of Mind 3 Seventh Son... 4 Powerslave 5 A Matter of Life and Death
I can remember the Powerslave tour with Twisted Sisters opening. Twisted were on the way up and they really meant business in those days. Great show. They went downhill right after. Maiden killed it as usual. The fact Bruce spoke to us in French really cranked the up the atmosphere. He speaks French with his own accent but he is pretty fluent. A sharp dude.
Wishing you the best in your trying time, Pete! This had been a long time coming! I'm with you 100% on your #1. But man, I love EVERY Maiden album, even the Bayley era! And for the first time ever? I can't rank them. It just isn't right for me because that's how much I love Maiden. But I will submit that the Blaze days are a lil rougher but man, I love the songs just the same.

Base intro to Revelations is unmatched. To really appreciate Maiden you have to treat yourself to a show abroad. Everyone knew all the songs in English. Very cool. Nice Job Pete

Great review, Pete! Peace of Mind was the current Maiden album when I started getting into them as a teenager. That's a fine choice for number one, as would be Killers or Powerslave, IMHO. Thanks for doing this!
I’m fairly new to rock/metal after only listening to Hip Hop/rap and R&B my entire life.. since I got a guitar to learn I’ve been diving into iron maiden and I absolutely love their music also I listen to Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, Metalica, Eddie Van Halen, Led Zeppelin, Ozzy Osbourne, AC/DC etc… the guitarist are amazing! does anyone have any more bands to recommend?
I agree with actually every rating including 2 minutes to midnight my least fav track on the album but still like it. Piece of Mind love every track except for Quest For Fire.
Personally I prefer maiden with both Dickson and Smith. I think Adrian is important to maiden
Without Adrian it really does not have the punch and structure he provides. The Ying to Dave's Yang!! Your correct my dear @ Kara Jalbert.
After the debut album, Adrian is an absolute must. That's why my 2 least favorites are Adrian-less.
Without Adrian you have Purgatory, Iron Maiden, Angel and gambler...etc. 🤣

Yeah, mine too. Masterpiece 🤟😀
The "Clansman" and "Sign of the Cross" are bona fide Maiden classics.
Folkrocksage. Yes, but sung by Dickinson.
I agree that Bruce takes them to the next level.
They are classics when Bruce sings them, in my opinion
@@LETSTALKENTERTAINMENT I agree. Maiden is a band and the Clansman and Sign of the cross are classics regardless of who sings them. Blaze did justice to those songs on the studio recordings.
This guy I don’t believe he’s a maiden fan, he’s a Bruce fan definitely though
I really liked "The Clansman" off of Virtual XI. Bruce even sings it live.
Agreed. The ONLY really good song from Virtusl XI.
Well, when an album only has 1 good song it means it's not a good album.
The versión the blaze is good
@@grvc1001 Lightning Strikes Twice is fantastic.
It still takes me back to circa 1993/4 when I first heard it
@XIII • EGO DEATH 👍👍👍
Agreed - it's also my favorite. Love all first 7 to death though.
Me too homie that’s the one that got me when I was 16
Agreed. SSoaSS is the best of all.
I dont understand then. You are a Maiden fan at least for that record then eh lad? Bless the lot of you

03. Powerslave
04. Killers
05. Somewhere In Time

Really, depending on my mood for the day, any of these can be number 1 as I just love the old school Maiden. The newer stuff is great as well, just does not rank as high for me as the older stuff. Thanks for the ranking Pete, much appreciated!
Good list
This is a perfect list. I'm 53. A Malden fan since 1981.
as me!
My favorite is powerslave, but I just started to dive deep into maiden.
As me too!
@@beefaveli3443 : In my opinion, Powerslave is as good as it gets. It's the pinnacle of Maidens career. Although 1983,s Piece Of Mind is awesome too.
Im 52...like early stuff
PowerSlave is one of my favorite records of all time
as a fan since the earlier days.. to me seemed like there were more "filler" songs on that one.
To me it is one of those rare classics. Top 10 album of the 20th century for me.
@@nimzyzamzam431 Back in the Village is so heavy and fun to play on any instrument.
Piece Of Mind is also my favorite Maiden album. Such a powerhouse album!
*Ambassador jeje
One does not simply mention AMOLAD and not mention For The Greater Good Of God.
One of my top favorite Maiden songs.
I bought Piece of Mind the week it came out. That and Killers are my faves.
Same!
Same here as well.
My 6 favorite Iron maiden albums in my opinion is:
6. Powerslave
5. Somewhere In Time
4. The Number Of The Beast
3. Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son
2. Iron Maiden (Selftitled debut album)
1. Piece Of Mind.🤩🤘
Seventh Son is my favorite, Somewhere in Time close second
The self-titled debut for me.
Later albums by them were technically better, had more instrumentation and bigger soundstages as they grew like a monster, but that debut was such a blast, and it didnt come off the turntable.
my neighbours at the time grew to love Maiden too.
one night they chucked a brick through my window so they could hear it better, bless 'em.
There is no "worst" albums by Maiden, they're all phenomenal albums even the Blaze Bailey ones too, great ranking Pete. Now we need the Ranking the Studio MOTÖRHEAD!
Yea there are, they are not terrible though. They kinda lost the metal edge on some of the stuff.
There are definitely bad maiden albums lol, the worst for me is probably a matter of life and death
@Jackson Carter all the songs on it sound the same and the guitar tone is just bleh
@@erosbifebeef5115 wow, that was one of their highest rated albums.. it's in my top 7 easy
My first Maiden lp purchased was the debut way back in June 1980, the record store proprietor had written " England's number one heavy metal band" on the cellophane so I took a chance and purchased the lp never having heard anything from them...didn't regret it!
amen!
I'm with you with Piece of Mind. Funny, I bought it because of the Album cover (just like Killers for you) and was hooked ever since. Up the Irons!
1. Powerslave
2. Somewhere in Time
3. Killers

Piece of Mind!
Hey Rich! Holy cow!!!! Whats up my friend?
Who else kind of loves Fear of the Dark? I know Smith isn't involved and you can't compare it to their 80's masterpieces, but the songwriting is strong, if a bit different. To me it's the most underrated album in their discography.
I like some of the songs on it, I feel like if it was cut down from 12 songs it could be a more liked album.
I love a few songs on it, but it does have some filler. Between it and No Prayer there's enough material for one perfect album.
Hopefully everything goes well for you and your family, Pete. Godspeed!

5. Powerslave
4. Piece of Mind
3. Somewhere in Time
2. A Matter of Life and Death
1. Seventh Son of a Seventh Son
Very close to my own selection. Especially No. 1, 3 and 6. By the way: are you not scare while listening 'Seven Son Of The Seven Son'. That record really scare me.
Glib
No. There are material obsessions that you choose. I though about music imagination, rather. I feel a real hell inside that record. Great album, dude, but I have to avoid after few times listening.
Piece of mind was my first concert and I was hooked, I agree it's #1
The X Factor is a fantastic album
I know right? It gets overlooked because it's not Bruce singing, but it's so dark and obscure, Blaze's vocals fit perfectly
it has one of the best drum sound on Maiden albums
@@RigoStar hell, one of the best drum sounds of the 90ies!!!!!!!!
X-Factor is Tremendous. The Aftermath is a classic.
If Bruce was on it, it would be on another level
Great list Pete, Enjoyed the video! Thanks!
Your recollection of purchasing “Killers” was exactly what happened to me. In my case I was going to buy “Signals” from Rush until I saw the Killers artwork. I had to have it and that is really what started and drove me down my journey into the metal rabbit hole. I never got into any release after 7th son. I never really tried tho tbh.
signals was a big shock to me I thought I had bought an ultravox album ..but That's ok I love ultravox too 👍🏻☮❤and rush and maiden and sabbath and and and......😊👍🏻
I gave up after Piece of Mind and Live After Death.

live after death , I killed the lp, and cassette through overuse !! doesn't quite seem right on cd...but necessary as I don't know wtf. an mp3 is ? 👍🏻😲
I'm a drummer in my 4th Iron Maiden tribute.
i agree, piece of mind ,i was like 12 years old.....blew my mind
THe biggest surprise for me was how low you had A Matter of LIfe and Death.
Yep...its a GREAT album...
It's their best since the reunion. In the top five of all time.
1 Somewhere in Time
2 Piece of Mind
3 Seventh Son...
4 Powerslave
5 A Matter of Life and Death
Agreed - phenomenal album
Top 5 for me. Its not as immidiate as the other albums. Give it time!
Boring live. Saw them on that tour and they played the album in full. People were walking out halfway through...
Thank you for your Iron Maiden review. I only like and have one Iron Maiden CD. I like their very first recording and that's it! 🎤🎸🎵🥁

“to tame a land” has this unique oriental vibe... it would fit on the powerslave album too
It 's on my top 10 Maiden tunes, simply amazing
Great song!
When I hear "oriental vibe", I think of Alexaaander the Greeeeaaaaat.....!!!
You are right. That song feels like segue into Powerslave.
@@stargazer6090 listen to Opeth))
Base intro to Revelations is unmatched. To really appreciate Maiden you have to treat yourself to a show abroad. Took my buddy for his 50th birthday down to Mexico City, five months ago in September At the Palacia De Portes ,giant arena built back in 1969 for the Olympics. Everyone knew all the songs in English. Very cool. Nice Job Pete
Brave New world: you should have mentioned “Thin Line Between Love and Hate”, it’s really one of the best tracks on that album.
My favorite band. 82-84 Maiden best years.
10 - No Prayer For The Dying
9 - The Final Frontier
8 - Brave New World
7 - A Matter Of Life And Death
6 - Powerslave
5 - Killers
4 - Iron Maiden S/T (1980)
3 - Piece Of Mind
2 - Somewhere In Time
1 - Number Of The Beast
Great review, Pete! Peace of Mind was the current Maiden album when I started getting into them as a teenager. That's a fine choice for number one, as would be Killers or Powerslave, IMHO. Thanks for doing this!
"The latter day Maiden is very epic sounding.... and I like epic music." LOVE IT!
