I’d say that the sound of perseverance is the best Death album. With songs like Scavenger of human sorrow, spirit crusher, flesh & the power it holds, a moment of clarity, the awesome cover of Judas Priest’s, Painkiller & the iconic instrumental track, voice of the soul, it’s hard to top this album.

Mario S I feel like that one gets the least appreciation, no? Maybe I’m wrong about that, but that’s the vibe I’ve gotten. I think it’s great though.
Having come out of a childhood going to a crazy evangelical school and super fundamentalist family, I’ve always liked Chuck’s critical themes that relate on Spiritual Healing, and just the more “mature” direction, in general. Don’t get my wrong, I love the first two albums, and the brutal violence and gore can be cathartic with the brutal playing, but I really prefer lyrics that are more “cerebral”, and no doubt SH is where Chuck really started the transformation and progression of Death. ✌️

I fucking know, when it comes to choosing the best album of Death, it's impossible, at least for me, it's very subjective and by what I've seen, people can choose their favorite albums based on discovering them by an album or simply because of how they feel by listening to a certain type of album from Death. I love them all, and I would suffer if someone asked me to only choose one.

My first Death album ever, the one which introduced me to the metal band I love the most. I've experienced all those passages mentioned by you, Blayne. The drumming intro, followed by the building-up riff and few seconds later... everything started to kick in both my ears and my brain. THOSE RIFFS, THOSE SOLOS, THOSE DRUMS, THOSE VOCALS, THOSE LYRICS... Everything sounded brutal, listenable and technical at the same time. During those years I wasn't a big fan of death metal and I used to listen mostly to thrash but that album, togheter with Cause of Death by Obituary, changed my mind and I've never turned back. To be honest, I even liked the Scott Burns production, that typical "death metal from florida" sound, which he created at his Morrisond Studios in Tampa. Later, I've discovered Cynic and I understood why Chuck has choosen Masvidal and Reinert to be part of the band for the Human recording sessions and tour. Sadly, two of those guys have left us but I will never forget them for what they have given us trough their music.

Sony didn't lose the master tapes, they just didn't want to give them up initially. Human was actually remixed by Jim Morris of Morrisound per Chuck's final wishes (Jim unfortunately due to illness wasn't available for the Individual Thought Patterns remix, but Alan Duches did a pretty good job on that). Also the album cover was certainly a reference to the band encountering a horrible car accident (and there wasn't much they could do to help) where two people eventually died from their wounds... Yeah, that affected the album. This is all in the liner notes of the deluxe edition remix/remaster.

Love to watch Blaynes reviews, they always highlight the best and if necessary the worst and can offer insights into pieces you may have overlooked yourself. Deaths albums have all aged well, the first 3 re-affirming the beginnings and quick progression of Death metal moving into new and progressive realms. Keep up the good work Blayne!

This is my all time favorite Death album. It has a certain quality and sheer intensity. It doesn't feel forced it's well crafted. It keeps you coming back for more. And Chuck's voice is at his best on this album R.i.p . true raw emotion and the drums oh Sean how you will be missed.

I think Symbolic is the best record followed by Human, Spiritual healing, sound of perseverance. Followed by individual thought patterns then leprosy and scream bloody gore. In that specific order. Cause I fucking know...Chuck is the king of kings! R.I.P. 🤘 When he passed away I felt a supreme emptiness in my soul. I couldn’t cry but I wanted to. He inspired how I play and so he lives on with all of us eternally and internally.

I originally dug SOP and Symbolic most being new to death metal. Now, at least for now I really like SBG and Leprosy in terms of style. Chuck's screams on those albums are gold.

Nice. I dig pretty much anything from Death. Cool to go back and review some older so-called classics. That label gets thrown around a lot but in Death's case they've earned that label.
Do some old Bolt Thrower next

What a hell of a ride of an album that was!!

Agreed 100% Best album in their catalog, 2nd being Spiritual Healing. Now I'm really loving GRUESOME which play origianl songs in a tribute to DEATH style. It's like hearing Spiritual Healing Part 2, and Leprosy part 2! Love those guys.

this was the first death album i listened to & so despite all their work being amazing it holds a special place in my heart. the guitar solo on see through dreams is almost like a religious experience every time i listen to it. i'm glad he mentioned the drum & bass addition tracks, that shit was so confusing to listen to but it does showcase the pure skill to their rhythm section for sure.

I would have been interested to hear Sam's take on this album in addition to yours, because he was probably listening to Death at the time when it came out and it was such a diversion from Death's first three which a lot of fans didn't like. An idea for future episodes?

Deaths entire catalog is great. (there is no such thing as a bad Death album) However picking the best is quite difficult but for me its Individual thought Patterns. From Human to Perserverance is quite possibly the BEST four album run EVER. Elite status.
