I was just lamenting Voivod’s lack of recognition on a metal site yesterday. One of my very favourite bands. And still releasing amazing stuff decades later.
I personally prefer "Killing Technology", one of my all time favourite albums infact, but "Dimension Hatröss" is extremely close behind. Voivod is just an insane band, love the fuuuck out of 'em.
I really like KT too, although I find it hard to get around the weak sound of the album, especially compared to their newer stuff. Kinda leads to it getting less spins than it otherwise would :/
Yes! Finally someone talking enthusiastically about Voivöd on YT. So criminally underrated in terms of wider audience recognition. And another YES! for recommending Mekong Delta. Their "Dances of Death" album made my day back in the day.
This album got me into Voivod when I picked it up on cassette back in my high school days (graduated in 88)! This is still my favorite Voivod album and I make sure to get and listen to them all! It's insane they aren't in the rock and roll hall of fame. Oh and it's Brain Scan, not Brain Scar! Great review!
100% agreement on this review. This album was incredibly forward thinking for it’s time. An absolute classic in my opinion. VoiVod is my most listened top artist on Spotify every year. 🤘🏼🤘🏼
Great band.Always been a fan of their discordant, dissonant sounds- punk, proggy, trippy metal. They were definitely a stand out during the 80s thrash metal dayz.
Thank you Sarah, your reviews are the best! Voivod is incredible and people need to know. I've been trying to get my friends to listen to them for years now. Dimension Hatross, and Nothing face are my favorite albums.
One of my favorite metal acts of all time. Completely different from anybody else you’ve ever listened to. Virtually no bad albums (although the earliest 2 are a bit difficult to listen to due to the production). No two albums sound alike and their musical style varies from thrash to hard rock to industrial metal, yet is all unmistakably Voivod. I was blown away by them when I first bought Nothingface via Columbia Record Club back in the day and been a fan ever since.
Great album . Voivod are completely unique . being a French speaker i was lucky enough to meet Away before their gig at the "temple of Boom" in LEEDS England on their last tour , shared a spliff and had a chat in French . it was as if we'd known each other forever...WEIRD... but then again its flipping' VOIVOD . totally cool experience , totally cool dude. (being 50 i remember very well how different and awesome this band was when they hit the scene !) 5 skulls indeed !!
Saw them live twice. First time I saw them was in 1986. They opened for Celtic Frost. About 20 people in the audience. After the show Away approached me and asked if I knew where to get some weed. I wish I did but it was dry everywhere. Second time was Dimension Hatross tour.
Probably my second favourite album. It took me a while to get as well. I actually don't know most of the track names. I always listen to the whole thing. A kind of people I can't describe.....they got a number between their eyes......
I breathe music so I fucking love it when someone is very passionate about it...and you definitely seem to love this band and this record so much so I got excited and I'm gonna listen to right away...I know Vektor is influenced by them and I love Vektor but I never really stopped to listen to Voivod so let's fucking go!!!
I love Sarah’s reviews, she has such enthusiasm and knowledge of the bands she’s reviewing. I was never really a big fan of Voivod but they are a very good Progressive Metal Band. Killing Technology. Nothingface and Dimension Hatross are so good and they still put out good stuff in the last 30 years despite Piggy passing away and Blackie getting kicked out of the band (again). They’re due for a new album, it’s been a few years since The Wake.

I got this when it came out and haven't recovered since. That said, I think Nothingface is even better and I still do enjoy Angel Rat and The Outer Limits a lot. Voivod was such a great band and Piggy such and awesome and atypical guitarist!

Target Earth, Post Society and The Wake are really good, on par with most of their output and only behind the trio of albums Killing Technology, Dimension Hatross and NothingFace IMO. Honestly, like with any Voivod record they need time digest (maybe not Post Society so much which is more straight forward), but it is super rewarding.
Seeing this band live for the first time last year was a life changing event. So inspiring and the last album "The Wake" is up there with the best material they've written.
Voivod has got to be one of the most original metal/rock bands in the past 4 decades. I pretty much enjoy everything they have put out. Also, great call on Mekong Delta. Big fan since their first album, the most recent one is a beast.
Great video. Voivod has been groundbreaking since day 1. Genre-defying and just incredible, every release. Dimension Hatross is without question the pinnacle release, and the tour for that album was simply amazing. RIP Piggy. A true innovator.
I FUCKING LOVE VOIVOD!!! What they did on Nothingface and Hattross, incredible! What they did with Pink Floyd's Astronomy Domine was life changing for me. Everything I wrote prior I needed to rewrite beginning to end.
Voivod has been my favorite band ever since I found my dads "Nothingface" album when I was about 9 years old. The opening riff of the "Nothingface" track got me hooked immediately. My highschool final project for Recording class was a cover of the first 1:30 of technocratic manipulators all done by me (still have it too 😋). So I guess Voivod could also be partly responsible for why I play the instruments I play.

Bought it on cassette when it was released so that I could walk around, listening to it continuously, on my Walkman. Had this and ...And Justice For All permanently in my pocket.
One last thingy, we had absolutely no money, never really did, even today. Back then we were touring and back home going back on wealthfare basically, the only time we had a little bit of moeny is when we sign with Mechanics/MCA for Nothingface, that is.
I bought this on release, scratched the vinyl the same day and have loved it, including the scratch ever since. Killing Technology is also amazing, as is most of what they've ever put out. Away's concepts were awesome.
I agree with this review. I had this the week it came out. I also love that you mention Delta at the end! I put music of Erich Zann up there with the top techno metal.
This episode kicks all of the ass. Sarah, thank you so much for all of the love and research into an all timer of a record, not to mention Canada's second best band. Rush is first, DUH!
Great review from one of my best album of all time. This album is so catchy, so creative, so brutal. Just let you know about a mistake on one title (since you know all the words and riffs of Dimension Hatröss ;) At 6:16 you say "Brain Scar", but this one (one of my favorite song) is called: "Brain Scan". I'm sure you know it anyway. And finally, thanks for your suggestions on similar genre. I'll look forward to these. Cheers!
Always happy to see Voivod get more praise and exposure, they're my favorite metal band of all time. And I'd love to see/hear you talk more about Mekong Delta, they're a big influence of mine and I rarely find people who are even familiar with them.
Holy shit, what a great idea.... Yes, Mekong Delta...Erich Zahn etc. Even by today's standards this stuff is still very progressive.... Funny you mentioned them, during the recent lockdown I revisited their music. and yes, seems like hardly anybody heard about them.
voivod is the greatest band in the galaxy i fucking love them it's nice to see some recognition i went nuts playing air guitar and singing alone when that macrosolutions to megaproblems clip started my favorite currently is angel rat which imo is underrated as hell and simply perfect all the tracks but killing technology dimension hatross and nothingface are also all equally perfect i love them so much i wish they were metallica rich and it all started with me when one day i listened to dimension hatross and thought jesus this is the worst band ever oh boy i could never imagine that once it clicked i would worship them
Thank you for making this. My 11 year old kid and I just watched it - said to him a few months back “you’re probably the only 11 year old in the country going to school with Voivod in your headphones.” Last few weeks it’s been Sabbat. Subscribed.
Been a Voi Vod head somce 1994...Outer Limits....Angel Rat....and Nothingface are the jams...in my opinoin....very unique...made thier own stomp boxes...hadba different sound and thats what i like.
Nothingface was easier to get into, and it is my favorite Voivod album. I agree that Dimension Hatros takes more listens to appreciate properly. I always thought that they were thrash on RUSH. They deserved a more dynamic bassist although Blacky did have a unique bass presence.
the rigid heaviness of Blacky its what makes this band unique, they had a more fluid "progressive" bass player on The Outer Limits and the intensity is clearly low compared to Nothingface. Listen to the Angel Rat demos with Blacky on it and the difference is notable.
This album was a game changer, it's not hyperbolic to say, there was nothing like this at that period of time. Tribal Convictions blew me away on the first listen, but with repeated listens, the excellence of the entire release became apparent. Nice review!!!
Maybe it's the fact that I grew up hearing a lot of prog rock, and in particular King Crimson, but I never found Voivod difficult to get into. They've always had amazing riffs and as far as I see it that's by far the most important thing in metal. Whilst they get nowhere near the level of attention they deserve (especially from non-musicians) at least albums like this, Killing Technology, Nothingface and RROoroaoraoraoroaroaorORrRR`!11213 are highly regarded and generally sneak into various 'best of' lists and the like. Something I've never really understood though is the lack of enthusiasm for Phobos and Negatron.
tagradh I didn't get into the Prog stuff until my early adult hood though I'd been listening to Voivod since my early teens. When I dug into early King Crimson I began to understand where Piggy got some of his unique riffing/writing from. Sort of backwards from how you were introduced. I guess the 21st Century Schizoid cover should've clued me in but I was young and dumb.
I bought the CD way back in 1988 (I was 16 at the time) because of the cover -- fell in love with it immediately. Was so different from everything else that was being recorded at the time. Still brilliant after all these years. --- R.I.P. Piggy ---
Also - I only recently discovered Mekong Delta -- not sure how I missed them over so many years. I agree with Sarah's recommendation -- I am really digging their stuff.
Ok, back after checking out Heir Apparent "Graceful Inheritance" -- I didn't like it. Way too "power-metal" (especially don't care for vocalist), and even though they try to sound like Iron Maiden, they don't pull it off.
I fucking love Voivod! I love Tau Cross too and I was really excted to hear that their 3rd album is coming. I know why Relapse didn't release it and I respect that. I'd love to know is that album totally buried. I have hear rumors that say that some label is releasing it but I don't know. I just want the Tau Cross album. They played here in Finland at Puntala Rock. Its one of oldest punk fests in Europe and I talked to Rob and Away and they were great dudes. Cheers from Finland, Petri
Humble brag, I got them immediately when dimension hatross was released. I think it was all the post punk, hardcore, noise rock I'd already become familiar with. Saw them at Blondie's in Detroit, '87 or '88, fucking amazing.
Re: Heir Apparent... I remember on the radio program Brain Pain (Seattle... pre-grunge...) when Jeff Gilbert first introduced this band as "Hair Appointment". Surely it was just a fun jab... and most bands of the era deserved the same with all the big hair... even Snake had some fancy do's... but whenever Heir Apparent pops up on my playlist I still sort of laugh about it.
Don't really need a video to tell me Dimension Hatross is one of the best metal albums ever written. Technocratic Manipulators is one of the best metal songs ever written. And Piggy's tone on the intro strike. Stunning. I was lucky to hear this in 1988.
Great show. In my opinion Voivod is way underrated. I freaked out on this album for a year also! I couldn't figure out what the hell was going on. So weird and unusual! Sometimes it feels like 8 punk songs awkwardly mashed together. It shouldn't work. I should hate it. It makes no sense. But it's a top 10 all CD for me!
Such a unique band, I feel like Voivod doesn't get enough credit for being so awesome. Plus, their live shows are phenomenal.
They are truly underrated. Voivod are in a class of their own. There may be imitators, but none have perfected the alchemy of their sound.

I don't have this one, but I love Voivod. such a weird-ass band. kind of like a thrashy, sci-fi Descendents trying to cover Rush.
Lol love that description.
There's a video of Dave Grohl talking about Voivod.
Stephen Egerton digs Voivod. Maybe you already knew that. Descendents circa '87- ALL are totally a pop-punk Voivod.
This one happens to be their best one.
Fantastic review of the band I hold dearest to me heart.
Bought it on cassette when it was released so that I could walk around, listening to it continuously, on my Walkman. Had this and ...And Justice For All permanently in my pocket.
such an important and inventive band
GREAT JOB SARA🤘🤘We need u 2 do more reviews🤘VOIVOD is AWESOME PROG/THRASH METAL
One last thingy, we had absolutely no money, never really did, even today. Back then we were touring and back home going back on wealthfare basically, the only time we had a little bit of moeny is when we sign with Mechanics/MCA for Nothingface, that is.
I love that all your reviews feature the vinyl version of the albums you review.
Killing Technology is my fav, but this is a very close 2nd. Voivod is an acquired taste, but their influence and innovation can't be denied.
Really interesting...great interview...loved the recommendations at the end..dont even know those bands..very impressed. Thankyou.
Cheers!
Those Heir Apparent and Mekong Delta LPs are killer, I was hoping they were there for a reason!
Great to see the unearthed segment back again 👍🤘
Always happy to see Voivod get more praise and exposure, they're my favorite metal band of all time. And I'd love to see/hear you talk more about Mekong Delta, they're a big influence of mine and I rarely find people who are even familiar with them.
Holy shit, what a great idea.... Yes, Mekong Delta...Erich Zahn etc. Even by today's standards this stuff is still very progressive.... Funny you mentioned them, during the recent lockdown I revisited their music. and yes, seems like hardly anybody heard about them.
The first CD I ever bought, an absolute classic
Absolute classic and probably my fave one from them, 10/10.
Wow, so good and articulate - and I agree 100%. Some next-level reviewing right there!
Love this album but my favorite will always be Killing technology
I've owned this album since it came out. it's my favourite thrash album of all time. It's a jazz punk psychedelic concept prog thrash masterpiece.
voivod is the greatest band in the galaxy i fucking love them it's nice to see some recognition i went nuts playing air guitar and singing alone when that macrosolutions to megaproblems clip started my favorite currently is angel rat which imo is underrated as hell and simply perfect all the tracks but killing technology dimension hatross and nothingface are also all equally perfect i love them so much i wish they were metallica rich and it all started with me when one day i listened to dimension hatross and thought jesus this is the worst band ever oh boy i could never imagine that once it clicked i would worship them
Thank you for making this. My 11 year old kid and I just watched it - said to him a few months back “you’re probably the only 11 year old in the country going to school with Voivod in your headphones.” Last few weeks it’s been Sabbat. Subscribed.
Gotta give them another chance. Only got to listening to them when Newsted joined the band and they performed on Ozzfest 2003.
@@GabAssbreaker Facts! Blackey's punk dirty tone is what make, for example, songs like Tornado being so insanely heavy.
I regret that I have but 1 like to give, for this band was truly ahead of their time.
Nice to hear the folks in Slint and Sonic Youth dug Dimension Hatröss. Makes sense
This album was a game changer, it's not hyperbolic to say, there was nothing like this at that period of time. Tribal Convictions blew me away on the first listen, but with repeated listens, the excellence of the entire release became apparent. Nice review!!!
DH was my introduction to Voivod shortly after it was released. The Nothingface followed, and I’ve been hooked ever since.
Nothingface is one of the best and most criminally overlooked metal albums ever.
Enjoyed your commentary. Being that your org is based in Canada, have you ever done a video about Beyond Possession? Criminally underrated crossover.
I’ve been into them since the beginning and saw them multiple times in the 80s, always
great⚡️
Also, there is no “Brain Scar”, it’s Brain Scan=derp
Good, glad someone else caught that 😁
I bought the CD way back in 1988 (I was 16 at the time) because of the cover -- fell in love with it immediately.
This and Killing Technology are my absolute faves from VoiVod. Both EXCELLENT albums \m/
Great review - but out of reverence I have to correct “Brain Scar” to “Brain Scan” 😀🤘. You were spot on with that Mekong Delta recommendation. Thanks!
Nothing Face is my fav, but very glad to see Voivod get some well deserved love. Nice one!
gotta love Voïvod! still so happy that Away designed my old band's logo
1:44 haha, It happened to me too. I couldn't get this tape out of my walkman for a few months, I had to listen to it everyday.
Voivod, with Melvins, are maybe the most underrated band in all metal.
You make a good point
That's a tremendous review/history of Dimension Hatröss. Well done
I wish more Canadians recognised the brilliance of Quebec's contribution to metal
Alberta knows voivod very well lol but does Quebec know disciples of power
Quebec is the main reason Canada is on the map in metal. Love from BC
Yep, Aggression, Treblinka, Groovy Aardvark, DBC, Obliveon, etc. (was friends with the first three.)
I have just listened the whole album. I see them live twice and yes they are fantastic.
Humble brag, I got them immediately when dimension hatross was released. I think it was all the post punk, hardcore, noise rock I'd already become familiar with. Saw them at Blondie's in Detroit, '87 or '88, fucking amazing.
Easily one of my all time favorites. Simply a work of genius!
I need to get back to this band. Love the first two.
My second favorite Voivod album cos my favorite is Killing Technology. Both albums have lyrics describing our times, I mean what's going on NOW!
Tribal Convictions is such a kickass song
