- UK extreme metal legends Carcass release one of the year’s most anticipated metal albums, Torn Arteries. Ferocious and uncompromising in their execution, Carcass’s ability to intricately dissect the innards of death metal, and display them for us to sonically understand has been their point of excellence for over three decades. Torn Arteries sits as a bookend on the modern side of the band's discography, connecting directly back to where everything began over 30 years ago.
Will it live up to the hype?

The godfathers of goregrind release one of the year’s most anticipated metal albums, does it live up to the hype? Let us know your thoughts on Torn Arteries.
More like godfathers of Melodic Death Metal. Since they released Heartwork can't call them goregrind anymore.
@@manuelluispereira1139 they’re also the masters of melodeath
Btw, the band aren't vegan anymore... They're vegetarian (there is a difference). They said it was too hard to stay fully vegan in the interviews for their back catalog remasters.
Anyway, I agree with Manuel. Calling them Grindcore, really at any point other than maybe their first and second album is doing a disservice to their music. I'm well aware of the connection to Napalm Death, but Napalm IS Grindcore... So labelled by their own drummer. Bill made a conscious effort to take Carcass in a different direction than his time in Napalm, and Necroticism Descanting the Insalubrious is nothing like Utopia Banished. I mean I could keep going, like how Extreme Noise Terror, Terroriser, and Brutal Truth are more troo Grindcore than Bolt Thrower for sure. I know for sure that Jeff Walker hates the Grindcore label, whether it's escapable or not is another story.
Should review the new Insomnium ep Argent Moon out today
I am perhaps in the minority in that I feel that Swansong and Wake Up and Smell The Carcass have some of their best tracks and I love that some of that mid-90s Carcass death n roll found its way onto this album. In fact, Torn Arteries is probably the Carcass album I would show someone if they were just getting into them for the first time - it doesn't really break much new ground but it showcases a little bit of every great moment and sound they've had throughout the years - all in one complete package.
I think that no matter which album you boarded the Carcass train on, you'll find something to enjoy about it
Been a massive Carcass fan for over a decade, so having my name appear on this record as assistant engineer was kind of a dream come true for me. The production done by David Castillo is impeccable IMO and this review was awesome!
Well done mate, must be an honour to work with well....today's Beatles lol so did you meet them? Is Jeff really that sarcastic in real life?
Amazing!
I have new loud zoomer neighbors upstairs who are about to learn who Carcass is.
haha, honestly this album is a good introduction.
@@BangerTV I love it when the old guard of metal puts out great work.
As it’s been said before....METAL UP THEIR ASS!
Blast heartwork...:)
Carcass definitely has their own distinct sound,, specifically these last 3 albums 🤟🏻🤟🏻
Surgical Steel is still in my regular rotation, can’t wait to blast Torn Arteries
Surgical Steel has and will never get old. Great album.
torn arteries is out today!
4 visits by the police already mate
Sounds like I’m going to really enjoy this and there’s no surprise there, but a little confused by the review TBH. I don’t think Carcass have really been “goregrind” or even “grindcore” since “Descanting the Insalubrious”, have they? It’s a pretty huge part of the Carcass story that they reinvented their style as melodic dearth metal, even while still retaining complete distinctiveness as Carcass.
I love both eras of Carcass, I just would’ve expected to hear Sam acknowledge that. They’re just not a goregrind band anymore, by any stretch of the imagination.
Yes! Exactly. I had to check twice if I was hearing it right. Carcass certainly did Grindcore but they completely flipped their sound (which, as you well noted, is actually a big part of their story and importance/contribution to metal). Sam goes as far as calling this specific álbum goregrind. Confusing indeed
@@supremelordoftheuniverse5449 Exactly! Given his clear knowledge of metal, exhibited throughout this show over many years, it’s just a real head scratcher. I can’t square it all. I’m still utterly baffled.
I think Necrotiscm was the move to death or melodic death metal. Like you say, they haven’t been grind anything for 25 years.
100% undeniable facts.
I'm really puzzled too... 🤔
Sam looks so happy reviewing this album lol
it has no animal cruelty
And I was happy listening to the new Carcass. I'm glad Carcass didn't disappoint. They better tour the fucking States!
Great review! Carcass is, and will forever be, my absolute favorite band. Torn Arteries is a great album. It's a VERY different Carcass record. BUT, they are ALL very different Carcass records! That is one of the wonderful things about this band; they never fail to deliver the goods, while remaining true to themselves and constantly trying new things. Bill's guitar-work is incredibly soulful on this recording. Lastly, it's so refreshing, that in 2021, Carcass is releasing an album that sounds, sonically like an actual band, playing together. The guitar tone is organic and not over processed or over edited, and the drums sound like DRUMS. Real, live, well recorded DRUMS. Thank you for the killer reviews and the amazing contribution to the Metal community, BANGERTV! \m/
Fantastic album. Heartwork opened my eyes to classic death metal and Carcass, along with Bolt Thrower, have been my favorite ever since 🤟
Sam is the best reviewer at banger... really miss when he did most of them.
Same!
Same. I only watch his reviews. I don’t know who the fuck these other people are I don’t even watch there reviews when I see them in the thumbnail.
Yeah I agree love his reviews plus the older guy can't remember his name
Carcass don't do bad albums, even Swansong is a great record. This one is awesome.
"We're here to talk about grindcore", followed by the least sounding grindcore song I ever heard. Carcass stopped being "grincore" long, long, long time ago buddy.
Symphonies of sickness!!!
I was talking to Sam about this today, just a slip of the tongue as he associates Carcass with pioneering Grindcore not the shift in style later.
Was thinking the exact same thing. Thanks Banger for the response
Glad to see Carcass back and like so many of you, Sam back doing a review.
8 years of the wait and this didn't disappoint me 5 skull.
I'm glad Bill chose to bring Carcass back, around a decade ago. To Firebird's detriment, of course.
I dug the Firebird stuff, solid 70s style hard rockin' 🤘
How about a combo of the two sounds. Firebird Carcass. Lol
@@careful...Icarus that would be something indeed. :)
@@careful...Icarus oh, hell no! That's why they both work so well, surely other bands could pull such a thing off, but Carcass is as it is and what it is it what it needs to be 🤘🏻
*if that makes any damned sense 😆
@@charlieo.possum5501 hell yeah! i am still digging the soul savior riff.. so fukkin bluesy
First time I listened to Carcass I was 15. Now I am 46 and it is still one of my favorite bands. Torn Arteries is a complete banger.
I'm glad I saved this review for a Monday, because Sam reviewing Carcass is the happiness I needed for Monday. I love BangerTV, and I love Sam!
it is always good to see Sam doing album review
thank you sir
"we're here to talk about grindcore..."
grindcore is just a cell in this amazing full spectrum metal album imho
just finished my first listen through of the record. First off. Incredible. Absolutely outstanding.
Not sure about the Grindcore/Goregrind tags Sam is throwing out here although there are very tiny elements of those scattered throughout. This is straight up a Melodic Death Metal record. And a damn good one at that \m/
@@deanbartolo6199 I found that odd as well to hear from such a metal historian as Dunn. The last Carcass album with goregrind elements in any notable quantities would probably be Symphonies of Sickness, IMO. After that they started leaning heavily (no pun intended) towards death metal.
@@deanbartolo6199 I think we’re all baffled by the Grindcore thing… so confusing specially from a specialist like Sam
@@supremelordoftheuniverse5449 was talking to Sam about this today, just a slip of the tongue as he associates Carcass with pioneering Grindcore not the shift in style later.
Nothing but love and respect for Sam and their reviews. Pretty solid. Cheers from Colombia.
I love that this band takes its time to release quality material...and I'm happy to wait for it. Brilliant!
Carcass is flawless, they never disappoint and keep aging like fine wine. Flesh Ripping Sonic Torment Limited is the best song I've heard this year and one of the best Carcass songs ever in my opinion. Torn Arteries is already a classic.
bill is slipping some firebird riffs in and i love it
totally.
Really dug this new album.
Carcass cannot do any wrong.
Carcass rips open another solid album. Always a good morning with an Overkill Review! Slam it Sam!
I've liked everything Carcass has done, so I'm sure I'll dig this a lot, too. You really can't go wrong with them. Plus, the artwork on this new one reminds me of Ween "White Pepper", so that's another plus! Thanks for the video, Sam - glad you're back! I'm also psyched to see the Triumph doc, by the way.
Excellent review. I can't wait to get this record and add it to my collection.
Honestly, swansong is still my favourite record next to heartwork. I know I’m prob the odd man out on this but the riffs on swansong are just so catchy to me. Anyone else?
Swansong is an awesome album for sureeee. The groove can't be denied on that album. That being said, I hear a lot of Swansong style riffs in Torn Arteries....so this one may hold a special place for you as well! :)
It has some amazing guitar solo's as well.
@@calebhohneke8482 Eleanor Rigor Mortis and The Devil Rides out would not sound out of place on Swansong
@@BangerTV Absolutely! 100% agree.
Also, excellent job on the review! You could tell you were super stoked on this album and I was stoked for ya. Us Carcass fans got spoiled with this one for sure haha. CARCASS!!!! \m/ \m/
Love to see a self aware reviewer. Excellent review Sam!
Hey bangertv, don’t forget The Godfather’s of goregrind Last Days Of Humanity!!
There new album is killer.🤘
Lost my head in 1993 with Heartwork......Lost my head in 2021 with Thorn Arteries.
Incredible as it sounds.
10/10.-
Thanks for the great review. I love CARCASS and this album does not disappoint.
GREAT ALBUM..I WAS AMAZED SINCE THE FIRST LISTENING...THEY RULE...AS YOU BANGER TV!
I am surprised you didn't review the new Iron Maiden album. I absolutely love that new album! I will be kicking back later and checking out CARCASS!!!!!!!
Bro watch Razorfist's review. You will either become a major fan of him ( like myself) or want to strangle him. Lmao
Thanks for the rundown! I’m looking forward to spinning the vinyl here … I loved their Despicable ep last year!
Great review as always, Carcass still got his sound and powerfull music. cant wait to listen full album
Solid effort. Surgical steel was so strong. But lightning never strikes twice. Awesome record though.
Papa Dunn, nice to see you back! I liked it almost as much as you did. Your review was pretty good. I guess I was a bit more critical of it, but not by much. I would’ve wanted even more catchier songs (I know, I’m in the minority but I love the catchiness of Swan Song). Something like Long Winding Bier Road from the Despicable EP for example, that type of catchy. Sometimes I found them to be too in the weeds of the style. But it’s actually nice to have a record like this, that challenges the listener just a bit.
Nonetheless, I basically gave it your score. It’s pretty good!
Carcass "Torn Arteries" is perfect.
8 years of waiting. OMG, thanks for that Carcass!! awesome album .
Im metalhead for all my life. Into metal for more than 30 years. Lately I missed, didnt have time for new music, since this came out. This for me is the best thing that came out for a very long time. After listening to radio stations working on something and during car drive to job not much time I spend on listening music, no new music to me is known, new bands and stuff. This Carcass album Im listeting all the time, every f second Im free Im listen to Torn Arteries. To me this is best HM album in a very long time. Man, very very long time. AOTY, Band OTY, Bill Steer GOTY. Pure gold.
Not to be "that guy", but... The Grindcore element hasnt really been as present as it once was for sometime now. And while there is still a little of that, I feel like it's definitely closer to their Melodic death metal and groove stuff they did in the middle of their career with heartwork and swansong. Sorry, just don't really see this as a "Grindcore" album.
Regardless, nice review though.
Same. Carcass haven't been considered grindcore or goregrind (Sam said both) since Symphonies of Sickness. Album seems pretty good so far but the cover is terrible.
@@Taichungsid But Sam's cool, I like Sam.
You ain't wrong but I love this band and I'm more into heartwork and up to now than I am for the grindcore stuff. Although I do like symphonies of sickness
They're not even metal any more, Torn Arteries is just a Disney pop album
You're right. They no longer belong in those categories and, personally, I think it has been for the better.
3:40 - actual start of the review
Great review as always brother 🤘🏴
Great review, and awesome to see Sam back at it!!
Long time of fan of carcass!! I remember buying a used cassette of symphonies of sickness in early 93 . I was a junior in highschool and man that's all listened for months. Then I sought as much of there material as I could. Ken Owen changed the way I played drums. And bill steer the riff master wow. They never disappoint 😊
I can never get over how close, At the Gates and Carcasses Stories have a kindred spirit
New Iron Maiden, new Carcass September is turning out to be an awesome month.
Great review as always. I know this is impossible on your end, but it would just be amazing to have these reviews happen while the music actually plays or in between clips of the songs that you're referring to..
Carcass nailed it with this one again! great album and great review! really love your channel. Cheers from bavaria!
Whilst I love Carcass and this sounds good there's a lack of surprise. Just listened to Aborted's new one too & that has a pile of 'whoa' moments where the new Carcass seems safer. Which I think Carcass has been post Descanting which I think is peak.
Incredible album and really enjoyed the review! 🤘
Just listened to the album. It's freaking great! Great review by the way!
@Nocturnal Heathen1184
Hahahahaha! You sir are a good troll. Congratulations!
I hope to see carcass play flesh ripping sonic torment ltd live one day. Fantastic song and a load of fantastic guitar harmonies! 🤘🤘
Great review, we all miss the blasting of reek and symphonies but carcass never really dissapoint. They own the genre of rot and roll and when the blasts do come in it's like a reward.
Best album since Heartwork
Yeah its no Heartwork and I feel it probably wouldnt have hurt with some Michael Amott input in the songwriting.
Nah! Surgical Steel FTW
Fantastic review of a fantastic album! It to me sounds like Swansong and Surgical Steel had a demonic offspring that was put into a meat grinder, baptised in pigs blood and had progressive spices sprinkled on top! One of the best this year! \m/
It’s 2021 & we still get a new carcass album, life is good & so is this album.
Superb 👏👏👏👏👏
I dig the new Carcass album. Necroticism is one of my favorite albums of all time. Saw them live back in 2008. Great band.
Hell yeah Sam! Can’t wait to see your next doc!!
Saw them play 2 years ago on Dynamo Metalfest. They played + 1 hour! Even Death Certificate was played!!!
Dynamo is still there? I thought it was over by 1999
Metal ambassador strikes with killer review I love watching metal evolution episodes to study groups definitely getting me through this pandemic this great channel of banger tv
I really like the album. Surprised their was no mention of Bill singing again. Such a crucial element to their sound.
Thanks for reviewing the album Sam, even though you can't hide the fanboy in ya ;-) need to check this out!
I can't get into it, honestly I just miss the blast beats. Sure it picks up the pace on Kelly's Meat Emporium but that's 35 mins in. It has some killer riffs, I just wish there were a few more fast parts and the album was 15-20 mins shorter.
Shoutout to the artwork though, amazing!
I completely agree and i was stoked for the album when they released Kelly meat emporium as a single. The rest is pretty bland and boring as much as it pains me to say it
You maybe have to listen to it a few times before having some appreciation for it, I get where your coming from, sounds great on they headphones that shake when the base comes in but everybody has their favourite era n for me it's Necroticism but I will never ever slag of Carcass, just glad their back, would like them to fatten up their rhythm guitar bits n get back the most stolen guitar tone in goregrind but that ain't their style, Tools of Trade e.p. which you probably own is up your ally, killer mate
Good to see Sam back in the review chair!
Totally agree Sam- great record. Favourite release this year I think. Be cool to see how it rates in your end of year list.
Swansong is a brilliant album! Definitely different from the normal Carcass stuff, but still a solid record! 🤘🤘
Top-notch metal from honorable veterans, like it from the beginning till the end.
Yeah, man. This was more than a fair review. Always love your reviewers. Ordered it, on the way. I have to digest it a bit more
I was telling my buddy the other day that Surgical Steel is eight years old already. Seems like yesterday when that classic came out. Come tour the USA again….I’ll be there 🤘
I listened to it today..... And love It. Pure Gold. A factory of fantastic riffs. Hello from Brazil.
anxiously awaiting Sam's review of the new Mastodon album. It's got to be Sam. It's my album of the year already after one listen, but I really hope that Sam reviews Hushed and Grim!
everyone else at BangerTv rocks though :)! You all are the best :)!
Great review, I just finished a full playthrough twice and what can I say.
I didn't know what heavy was until I heard Heartwork way back when, and since Carcass have become firmly entombed as one of my Mt Rushmore alltime top bands.
For me this one's a step up from Surgical Steel as it encompases more of thier overall sounds throughout the years, almost like an ode to themselves with tongue firmly impaled in cheek, containing snippets from all their various iterations (even within the same song!) with a dash of Steer and Walkers other bands (Firebird, Blackstar) to boot.
No other band does it quite like Carcass, between Steers masterful riffs and Walkers much underrated lyrics and delivery, it really is amazing to see them still delivering at this standard soem 30yrs later.
Gods of grind indeed. \m/
Sam Dun, damn man, that's a LONG time ago :D I met you on Wacken.
And of course watched your documentaries.
Great album! Also, Sam please do more of these...you're the best reviewer.
I can't believe that Geddy Lee is a host on metal TV now. Amazing.
Because all skinny Canadians look the same? That’s wacisths! :P
Best album of 2021. Nothing out there close to it so far this year
looking more and more like fellow Geddy Lee
I didn't think the last few they did were still grind, more melodeath. I like Surgical Steel but I don't hear much grind on that.
I was talking to Sam about this today, just a slip of the tongue as he associates Carcass with pioneering Grindcore not the shift in style later.
in short this is any absolutely great album - Flesh Ripping Sonic Torment Limited is a masterpiece of a track - the main riff is as heavy and stank face as it comes!
Surgical Steel was SO good. It grabbed me right away.
Maybe my favourite Carcass record too.
This hasn't grabbed me from what I've heard so far.
EDIT. Okay so, it seems they released the two weakest songs as promos. The rest of the disc is SICK! Carcass still rule!
My man Sam, good to see you at the review desk again brother
nothing can crush those beasts called "heartwork" and "swansong" but Surgical and this new Torn Arteries are up there with the most demanding fan of killer riffs sweetened with a lot of melody that only carcass can offer.
I have been a fan of carcass since 1990 so I can give my opinion properly.
rotten greetings.
I wanted a surgical steel 2.0 honestly. That album is untouchable. My perfect version of Carcass if you will. That fucking rot n roll that I love. The first thing I noticed was the production was different than Surgical Steel. I was hoping and had made suggestions to them to use the same producer of Surgical Steel but I am not sure if they did. This album is definitely more relaxed. I'm still Disgesting it on the daily.
Carcass Kills!
Great review as usual Sam!
I saw Carcass in Seattle at the Paramount in 2014 with Black Dahlia Murder and a couple other good bands and Carcass played a 2 hour blistering set and it was one of my favorite concert experiences since I saw Metallica back in 1989. Torn Arteries is fuckin badass it's like they did a sequel to Heartwork or I call it the aftermath of what happened with The Heartwork. The aftermath is 28 years later and the diagnosis is Torn Arteries. I freaking love it 🤘🤘🤘 Bill Steer is a genius on the guitar.
Sam, welcome back! Where the hell did you go this whole time? Great Carcass review. Pretty spot-on on how Torn Arteries sounds. I heard it after checking out your review and I got to admit: they really continued to kick ass with this one. Like you, I do also wish it was a little more metallic but I like that it stood out as its own album. Some parts do sound bluesier and groovier but it still has the elements we love and it's still Carcass! It was totally worth the wait!
What is wrong with the lyrical layout in the booklet? Can somebody explain how to read it properly?
‘We’re here to talk about grindcore’ … where’s the grind? They haven’t been ‘grind’ in 30 years
And that's a great thing
There's definitely not as much, but some of it is still there. They've blended several styles together and it makes a much more mature, well rounded, interesting album.
Dach \m/ Metal Smash Montages tolerated heartwork, swansong was a disaster, that last album was boring and this one sounds like swansong and the boring one. The guys in carcass are nice blokes and hanging out with them was always a blast but they’re music is shitty now. Their cover art was confronting once upon a time - now it’s a garden salad? Weak.
Slip of the tongue!
And that is a good thing
Great Melodic Death Metal Album Could Never Get Into Carcass’s First 2 Albums As I Hate Grindcore But Everything Else Especially Heartwork Is Pure Gold In My Opinion
I always loved Swansong, and it was absolutely skewered by metal heads at the time. I honestly think people weren't ready for it, and they figured that out and decided as Sam said to slowly trickle the death'n'roll back in.
I love how "Swansong"'s reputation has been redeemed after the years. Well deserved! There's not a single mediocre Carcass album IMO, they're all memorable for one reason or another.
This a mix, take the direction from Surgical Steel and the feel of Swansong, specially in the mid tempo songs i tnink
Indeed. Swan is a damn good album. While I prefer the nastier Carcass sound there's nothing wrong with anything they've done.
@@cmd_f5 the jazzy parts from Bill Steer are delicious
I got to agree. I'm still evaluating this album since I listen to it 1 or 2 times a day since it came out. I must say that the album has Heartwork or even more Swangsong elements to it, but this time Carcass mixes all albums and doesn't do melodeath when the album before it was grindcore. So I still have to evaluate, but it has the elements to become one of the best albums of this year to me!
Great review, great record! Thanks, Sam!
CARCASS! Gonna be a great weekend jamming Torn Arteries on repeat! I wish I had more friends that jammed out to Carcass but friend or foe, stranger, online friends or acquaintances, I’m rubbing this album in your face!
it is horribly wierd to say it but the part in Flesh Ripping Sonic Torment Limited that starts at about 5:05 gives me mad sevenfold vibes xD
What an album though holy shit i don't even know what to say have been playing it everyday since it came out and it just keeps getting better in my ears
Enig! 🇳🇴
Great review...very indepth! This was like reading the manual but more fun :) Do people even read manuals anymore though...lol. Great job on your video :)
Thank you! I love this channel!!
Awesome, I’ve been looking forward to this one.
All hail the mighty Carcass!!!! One of the best bands in metal.
The reason why this album is so damn good. Because it’s plan and simple.
Very groovy album. Absolutely love the atmosphere in some of the songs. But yeah very good Album rock on! 🤘
I thought the sound was kind of weird when they put out Under the Scalpel Blade. It's kind of ironic, as a unique production was one of two things I wanted after Surgical Steel, and they certainly delivered that, but I wasn't entirely happy. But listening to the whole album, the sound grew on me, even on first listen, and I think I'm pretty happy that it doesn't sound like every other metal album. So my expectations were actually exceeded, based on Under the Scalpel Blade. And really happy to hear some Bill Steer vocals again, which was the other thing I wanted after Surgical Steel. Overall, really solid album.
