The best albums are normally the ones that grow on you and unlock their potential over time...

I dug the second half more than the first. Whole album is a 10/10 from me. Crack the Skye levels of awesomeness. The musicality is off the charts.

I don't go into a Mastodon album with expectation, I lean into the journey. I appreciate that they write true to themselves. I liked the chill vibe of the album, the way that the songs settle in and make an impact. I also enjoy the nod to previous work throughout the album and will definitely be listening on repeat for months to come.

So shocked seeing a lot of negative comments here, easily their best album since Crack the Skye for me, they never made a bad album but all of them after CtS were a bit radio-friendly but this? This is another level, bold, atmospheric, and adventurous journey.

If anyone founds flaws in this album, then there's not a good metal record in this world.

You put your foot in your mouth on the last Mastodon album review and had to correct yourself. This time, you bit off "more than you can chew" with your 3.5 star review and will have to do so again. This album is another opus from one of the best metal bands of all time. This album is 6 out of 5 stars and I look forward to your follow up amended review. Beyond being a masterpiece on a pure musical level as a foundation, this album is galvanized with the emotions, pain, grieving, questions, sadness and coping that comes with losing someone. Another grand slam home run from Mastodon.

This album (or 2 albums) grows on you a lot. You're making the same mistake as with the previous album. Time will tell. For me this one has a perfect score - 5 skulls!

The Beast is one of the coolest songs i think they've written. Its just such a strange sound but it works so well, and having Marcus King playing on that song is well is just so rad. Loved it!

I don't understand how people couldn't like Gobblers of Dregs and Eyes of Serpents. I loved the heavier songs alot, the riffage on More than I Could Chew absolutely BRUTAL. The Crux was great. But man I thing Gobblers of Dregs and Eyes of Serpents may be up there with Teardrinker as the best on the album.

The whole "taking time to grab hold" I totally understand. At first I wasn't into "Once More Round the Sun" and now it's my favorite Mastodon album.

I was first introduced to Mastodon through Sam's documentary "Metal Evolution", and I have to say, I've never looked back. I just want to say thanks again for getting the word out there to people who may have otherwise passed great music by.

First listen, i loved 50%, liked 30% and was meh on 20%. After my latest listen (4th) I love 100%. Like most good heavy prog, took my brain a bit to really hear everything thats going on and the bigger picture of many tracks. Full disclosure, i absolutely love 95% of what mastodon does.

Don't feel bad Sam, I was underwhelmed by The Hunter and Round The Sun at first too, but those albums just wouldn't unhook their tusks and that mastodon trunk kept pulling me and now I'm fully snug in the wooly fur of those album and really love them. Sometimes good things really do need time.

One of Mastodon’s greatest achievements, an album that reveals something new and exciting every time you listen to it is a special one and this album is that, an intricate masterpiece 10/10

Best mastodon album since crack the skye. Proggy, doomy, mature, and honest. It’s terrific no matter what anyone says about it. It’s getting great reviews for a reason. Skeleton of splendor is the standout of the record.

I feel like you will change your mind. There are a few songs on this album that missed the mark for me, but many of them blossomed with more listens. I liked emperor of sand, but not nearly as much as this one.
