Come on man, if this isn't a 5-skull album I wouldn't know what is. Hands down one of the best metal albums of all time! The production suits the raw energy of the songs perfectly and makes it stand out of the crowd. This is sludge after all!
Honestly, jail is one of my favorite down tunes, and planet caravan is one of my favorite B.S songs. Obviously Phil loves planet caravan, because Pantera covers it. I don't consider jail a "filler" tune, I view it as a de-compression/smoke break from the rest of the album, like the acoustic interlude. Don't get me wrong, I love every song on this album, and I don't mean anything bad by this, but let's be real, the majority of the songs on this album sound the same, in a good way, but none the less, the same.
I can’t even begin to describe how much NOLA means to me. The emotion that it brings out of me, the ride that it takes me on, the shit that its gotten me through.. It’s a top 3 record for me and one that I will carry for the rest of my life.
5/5 album for me and I can’t disagree with you anymore when it comes to ‘Jail’, fucking love that jam and it acts as the perfect breather track to an absolutely kickass record, NOLA for life 🤘🏻
The production is part of the charm of this album to me. The fact that it sounds like a demo was a breath of fresh air. Especially with how overproduced metal was getting at the time NOLA was released. True classic.
Funny what Dekay said about “Jail.” The first time I did shrooms I put NOLA on and somehow the repeat button got hit during “Jail” and after a while I thought it was the longest damn song. Who knows how many times the song played before I realized what happen. I was trippin pretty good.
Incredible, timeless record that I love to this day. Speaking of sick NOLA bands, can you guys please do When The Kite String Pops by Acid Bath in a future Unearthed video?
I bought this at Best Buy when it came out, having no idea who was in the band or what music it was, the cover alone sucked me in. Still one of my all time favorite albums, full of riffs!! 🤘🏻
This album is an absolute classic, hands down, no doubt. Best track for me was always LIFER. But I also love Eyes of the South and how it has that super bluesy guitar followed by tortured screams.
I remember in college I was obsessed with lifer. And then a local band played live a cover for their encore. It was a rural city so most of the crowd (like 200 people) didn't know the song. When the first note hit the air, me and one other guy instantlty went bananas and started mosh alone. Lifer bro knows it.
Fuck yes. This was my number one choice for the format, and ya smashed it. I LOVE the heavy use of song snips, hopefully this drives more kids to the altar of the riff. Like Daniel, I still love the album today as much as the first time Temptation's Wings blew open my tiny little mind back in '95. I've seen Down live three times, each time they crushed it. You can feel the good vibes flying off a band that is touring and playing together because they love it, not because it's their job. 5/5 skulls.
It's funny how he says he doesn't like jail because " it doesn't go anywhere" yeah, you're in jail, you're not supposed to go anywhere, and it captures that stagnation/hopelessness. "Our lives capsized"
What I love most about Down is that, hey, here's your reminder that Phil can do more than pitbull bark. Phil can actually fucking sing. And sing with some soul
Damn, this is so fucking crazy. I've been in this weird mood for the past month of just jamming Down, Superjoint, and Pantera CONSTANTLY on repeat. Especially this Nola record. Back when Phil was in his prime between 92'-96'. Phil has contributed so much to metal in the past 30+ years than probably anyone else.
I had this album on cassette back in the day. This album doesn't get talked about enough in my opinion, it's one of the best albums of all time, Not just for the genre, I mean in general. I've listened to this and Down II at least once a week for years and years. 🤘HAIL THE LEAF🤘
Temptation's Wings riff just reminds me of Pantera and nice shoutouts this time old school style COC. Time to listen to this again thanks to this review
One of the greatest metal records of all time, and one of my top 10 favorite records of all time. I’ve seen probably 4-5 times IIRC. Always put on a killer show. I remember getting the cassette tape back in 95. The tape sat in my truck for years and years until it finally became unplayable.
The production on 'NOLA' is excellent. It sounds like filth, and it is meant to sound like filth. As for 'Jail', strongly disagree. Don't think of it as a song, because that album is a trip. Not every piece of recorded music serves the same function, and some songs need to be played in context. 'Jail' is hypnotic and transcendent, it's a brief gleaming respite before you get dragged back into the sludge. It isn't supposed to go anywhere, it's like a spring in the middle of a bunch of swamps. It's just meant to be. Listen to it again with that in mind, and fix your score.
This shit is so meditative... I went to the beartooth mountains in Montana few years ago playing this on my earbud laying down looking at the stars and my life was complete.
This album changed my life. To me, it’s the best Sludge Metal album of all time from arguably the best Metal supergroup of all time. I’ve always said that Down are more modern incarnation of Sabbath. No other group commands the “heavy metal riff” like they do. Words can’t describe how much this one means to me. Thanks for doing a review on it!
Great choice. Great review. Though I think Jail is a perfectly placed gem. In keeping with the southern sludge theme how about a review of Southern Whiskey Rebellions' "On Guard til Seal is Broken"?
Agreed - I properly listened to this album again for the first time in ages the other day, and Phil’s insane vocals were the one thing that seriously stood out for me.
During this time, all my friends we into NIN, Manson, and such. It was years before I knew that anyone else loved this thing as much as me. My dumb ass went to a Down show about 2005, and was worried no one would show up! Um, people do know about this.
Me too. But it's really tied to high school memories of getting stoned or tripping and melting into the floor while listening to this album. The other songs are entrancing themselves, but the vibe of Jail added something very different, and necessary imo, to the whole album experience. The watery guitars, the bongos, the strained whisper vocals. It's so mellow, but still such a heavy vibe. I think it's a beautiful song, and well-placed in the tracklist. Also, I've never had a problem with the production. I like the rawness. I'm sure I don't have DeKay's ear for sound, but it sounds good to me.
@@ghostnote-6 That is a perfect articulation of my thoughts as well Ghost. Jail is the eye of the hurricane if you will. Gasping for air the song allows you to come up from the depths for a quick breath only to snatch you under again with the rest of the album. A perfect night ending masterpiece.
Ya know, I'm a production nerd, OG source material, FLAC, WAV file freak, but, I've always liked the production on this album. Knowing what an organic project Down is, the production reflects that. If it had a more slick production, I'm not sure it would have the same soul. Kind of like Motown recordings. Technically not recorded "well" but there's an undeniable, intangible soul to the recording, and that's not even talking about the performances and the songs. I feel like the 1st Down record is kind of that.
Definitely one of the best heavy rock albums of the 90's and one of the last great albums of that decade. I wish there more bands like this - I may have to form one.
funnily enough this was my first ever review (recorded back in 2019) and i had no idea what i was doing. would absolutely give it a 4.5 or 4.75 even today if i could amend.
In my Top Ten albums of all time. It's that good. A Classic. 1. Eyes Of The South 2. Stone The Crow 3. Temptations Wings 4. Losing All 5. Hail The Leaf 🤘⚜🤘⚜🤘⚜
@@integrity101 My ranking would be: 1) Use Once and Destroy, 2) Caught up in the Gears of Application, 3) A Lethal Dose of American Hatred And that's what's great about Superjoint. "A Lethal Dose of American Hatred" is an album I play all the time!

Whats your go-to NOLA track?
Jail
Bury Me In Smoke. I've seen them twice and they kill it live.
Probably Bury Me In Smoke or Jail. Rehab was really something new from Philip at the time.
Rehab. It's a no-brainer for me. Whole album is great, though.
Lifer
Bury Me In Smoke is the most perfect album-closer I've ever heard. Absolutely crushing end to an all-time classic album.
My favorite track on the record.
Absolutely agree! Best song in the record by far
It's even better that they closed every show with it, goddamn perfect song.
And after 10min at the end of the set u are still headbanging to that riff, can't name another song like this)
smooooooooooooke
Come on man, if this isn't a 5-skull album I wouldn't know what is. Hands down one of the best metal albums of all time!
The production suits the raw energy of the songs perfectly and makes it stand out of the crowd. This is sludge after all!
yep, i fucked up. was my first ever review haha
@@daniel_dekay it is a perfect album. It grows on you bro.
I'd have to also disagree about the production.
Daniel, I usually agree with you 100%. With this one I just couldn't resist letting you know why this is a 5 skull album. 😉
6 fvkn skulls outta 5 bro
I always thought that the tune "Jail" was Down's answer to Black Sabbath's "Planet Caravan."
The most depressing song ever..i like it.
it is... this guy is way off the mark.

Same bro!
Wholeheartedly agree. My go to album when I’m feeling depressed
Ayyy what up my dude my dawg!
As mentioned, Down is Sabbath worship and so Jail is just a take on Planet Caravan.
That’s what I was gona say! Also ‘Solitude’ 🤘
This album gets five out of five for "Temptation's Wings" alone.
Also, "Lifer".
And "Bury Me in Smoke".
And "Stone the Crow".
Mannnn just list the whole fucking album my dude!!
And “Eyes of the South” and “Hail the Leaf”, and “Pillars of Eternity”etc etc...
5/5 album for me and I can’t disagree with you anymore when it comes to ‘Jail’, fucking love that jam and it acts as the perfect breather track to an absolutely kickass record, NOLA for life 🤘🏻
Totally agree. NOLA is a perfect album with no weak songs.
those breather kinda songs are welcome on a hour long album for sure
Fucking love jail....!!!! Such a good song
Jail is the Planet Caravan of this album, perfect and it makes sense in the context of the unfiltered room vibe.
YESSS NOLA is an absolute classic!! great choice for Unearthed
The opening riff of *''Stone The Crow''* still gets my testosterone levels going high.
the breakdown riff tho
I have never once grown tired of this record.
Saw them live twice, once in the front row at a small bar in Lafayette. Best concert I ever went to
For an album that was recorded in a barn… In a swamp… In the 90s… On a lot of “ substances”, this one is pretty fucking hard to beat.
That was the 2nd album, not this one.
Wearing a Superjoint Ritual shirt in a Down review ;)
I got that shirt.
Probably hard to find these days because the world is more pussified now.
The production is part of the charm of this album to me. The fact that it sounds like a demo was a breath of fresh air. Especially with how overproduced metal was getting at the time NOLA was released. True classic.

Griping about Jail is a head scratcher for me. Also, I fucking love to production. The guitar tone is perfect.
The reason it sounded that way was because it was supposed to.
Raw and unapologetic.
Old school.
The second one had all that, it was awesomer.
Incredible, timeless record that I love to this day. Speaking of sick NOLA bands, can you guys please do When The Kite String Pops by Acid Bath in a future Unearthed video?

Absolutely loved the production on this album. I hope it never gets remastered, it's aged so well too.
...this just started, I paused it... I do hope this person knows the gravity of what they are getting into here. Now to continue.
The record is perfect and jail is a classic, 5 out of 5.

One of the best albums ever in any kind of music. Perfect, a classic.
Hey Dekay , great review

Killer album, and Jail it's an awesome tune. Really cool t-shirt by the way

100% disagree on the criticisms as well. 4/5? Fuck off!
5/5 album, absolute classic
The 25th anniversary livestream was killer !
Might be overly strong statement, but I don’t think any Stoner bands from the last decade ever produced an album that holds a candle to this one
