Its an absolute and utter masterpiece. Liked Emperor of sand, loved Once more around the sun, didnt like the Hunter, loved Crack the Skye. This is their magnum opus. Its an astonishing piece of work.
@@thinkwiq3081I would say CTS is their magnum opus but H&G is pretty damn close
This is my Album of the Year. Deep, atmospheric, layered, melodic, and utterly interesting throughout. Front to back perfection.
Same here! Cheers!
Gojira's fortitude Is way better
You'll find no argument here.
@@cristianbellino8828 that's an opinion that I won't say is wrong, but I dont agree with.
Hey Pete, excellent review. I never comment on RUclips videos but I wanted to tell you how much i enjoy these reviews and your channel as a whole. No bullshit, no unnecessary flashy intros and over production, just real, honest music discussion. Thanks for all your work and keep up the kick ass work. Thanks!
Pete doesn't respond to positive comments.
@@stephanea5364 Yeah that’s fine, but in this toxic online world we live in, where people would rather pick keyboard warrior fights than say something nice, I thought it would be better to say something positive to maybe lift someone’s day a little.
This album absolutely blew me away. A ton of new really good music has come out this year, and to this point, this is easily my album of the year. The songs are so atmospheric, epic and sprawling. The emotional weight throughout the lyrical content and musical performances is immense. Both some of their heaviest and most delicate songs in years. I think this is their best album since Crack The Skye. Cannot wait to see them in NYC with Opeth in just over a week!
Oh you lucky person!! Opeth live! And Mastadon❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥enjoy!!!
I just saw Opeth and Mastodon in Az! They played like 6 songs off this album, it was awesome.
Brilliant album, not quite up to the level of the first 4 imo, but certainly their best since Crack The Skye.
Haven't found a single weak song on this album. It's a masterpiece! Bought the vinyl, and base my experience on that. Sounds great. I love how they switch singers, doing their own parts, verse, bridge and chorus, as switching a singers voice as an instrument. Keyboard parts is incredible too. Fuck, this album just kicks ass from start to finish!
Love your videos, Pete, keep them coming!
This is one of those double albums where I loved bits and pieces from each disc and my favorites change within the blink of an eye. The end of More Than I Could Chew might be one of the best moments in their whole catalog. Savage Lands is what I've been waiting for on a Mastodon album, brings me back to a Blood Mountain and Leviathan type of feel.
Totally agree with the ending of More than I could Chew.
I've spun this album a couple of times already, outstanding! This one will be getting many more spins in the weeks ahead.
I've played this album almost exclusively since it dropped. It's the only thing inwant to listen to for some reason.
There’s an excellent extended vid on RUclips now on the making of Hushed and Grim. Highly recommend!
Pretty solid album, in my opinion. My one thing about double albums I've noticed is that it's pretty difficult to pull off. Even some of the greatest double albums of all time have some argument as to how much material is really needed and if it can be trimmed down.
No question, this grabs me more with each spin. Agree on the length but when you have 4 years and a pandemic shutdown… I guess you write tons of music. I think there are so many musical ideas going on that it can be overwhelming at first. Love to catch them on this tour with Opeth.
Pete, you realize the goal of your channel better than any other channel I know. Great variety of genres, topics, etc. Respect and a pat on the back. Keep on keepin' on.
Getting better with every listen, favourite song keeps changing. Peace and tranquility currently stuck in my head. Hopefully get to see them played live sooner rather than later.
Absolutely AMAZING album. I'm super, super impressed. Saw them live a week ago and they killed it. Wow. Every track is a banger. My fave is More than I can Chew. Brann Dailor's voice just keeps getting better and better. Stunning 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Some killer tracks on this album. My favourite so far is Skeleton of Splendor. This one really gave me goosebumps. And I learned a new english term: "detriment". Thanx for the review, on spot as always. Hope you feel better.
I feel there is a fantastic fifty-minute album lurking among all the chaos here. However, the tracks that i would cut from it appear to be big favorites of many fans...and so are the ones Pete would cut here...so...better to have it all and make a playlist to your liking maybe.
I was just wondering when you would review this, perfect timing.
Love the new, Mastodon ‘ Hushed and Grim’ .
Thank you for your review!!
All the damn time.

Life is better with music.
I've been listening to this non-stop and find it to be a masterpiece. Every song is awesome! It's great to read the lyrics as you listen.
Very dark and sad and even gothic.
@@Kurt843"gothic" is an insult
... this album is the best mastodon work, and the best heavy metal album in 2021!
Really cranking out the reviews Pete, really good time to be doing it too so we can stuff those rock fan Christmas stockings with the choicest cuts ;)
Pretty damn good album a solid 9/10 easily ! I didn’t like Emperor of Sand much but this is like a good combo of Crack/Blood and Once More.
Let's go Pardo!
Great review. Great band. But where’d you get that captain beyond shirt at? My dad likes that band be a perfect Christmas present for him!
Got the CD , yet to spin it but looking forward to dimming the lights and immersing myself. Love this band, utterly fascinating, requiring a bit of effort but always worth it , brilliant Mastodon never disappoint
Album of Year Hands Down. Should win 3 Grammies this time.
Nice review Pete. I always appreciate how you talk about how a new album compares to their recent releases and how it might slot into their overall catalog.
Are we going to see a review of Lucifer- IV? I think it’s their best yet.
I absolutely love this double album - take an intermission if you need to :) I find each disc is so rich and varied that it whips by. AOTY.
Thanks Pete.
I haven’t loved a Mastodon album since Leviathan. They’re one of those bands that were really heavy and innovative when they started and paved the way for copiers like Baroness and Torche. Then they sterilized their sound. Loved their first two albums they always had awesome drumming and guitar leads.
Remission and Leviathan are great but if you haven't heard Blood Mountain and Crack the Skye you're missing out on their two best albums IMO.
I have listened to it loads and think it is great - one of their best; one of the best albums of the year. And agree - CD2 maybe not quite as good - and quite samey. Thing is I still want the songs and happy listening to 80 minutes, so not a huge issue other than it isn't quite the same standard right through.
I think if they cut this to a single disc I would really like the album, but as is it’s a decent effort and still a welcome addition to the catalogue. I feel very hit and miss with the softer tracks, some truly lovely ones mixed with really boring ones. Love the heavier tracks and feel like mixing them in with the best softer/emotional cuts would’ve been awesome
Completely agree
I'm going to say it. I like this more than Crack the Skye. That may change, it is new, but still...
CTS is the only other cd that I have by these guys
Hey Pete, great review! I would suggest playing the album on shuffle especially disc 2. Dagger really stands out when you separate it from the two tracks that bookend it! So much to digest in one sitting. It’s a good record to mix up the playing order.
I agree with almost everything. I love this record. I like the songs that Pete thought dragged but, IMO there are no bad songs. I really like Mastodon so take what I say with a grain of salt but, it's a killer album.
Pretty sure this will be in my top five of this year. There are some really magical moments happening on this.
You need to give those 3 songs more time Pete. This whole album clicks and works. It is a flow that makes sense. The guitar solo in Had It All is absolutely scalding.
Good review, Pete. 🤘
Great album- They fell off my radar for a few years but this brought me back in. Killer stuff all around.
First Mastodon record I’ve ever listened to, really liked it
Awesome shirt! So, I like Mastodon a lot. I was on board from the first album, but they kinda lost me after crack the skye. That said, im really interested im hearing this new one and might have to pick it up soon...
Will check it out. Thanks for the good review.
I'm gonna see opeth and mastodon live on Nov 28th in Texas
Great review. I absolutely love The Dagger and Had It All but I enjoy these moody songs alot.
Like most Mastodon albums, it takes a few listings before you can make a judgment. Now that I have, it is absolutely killer. Right up there with Crack the skye. More than I could chew maybe my favorite tune
CD one could be my album of the year. But when you include CD two it drops down a bit.
I actually prefer cd2...Go figure... :-)
I have to agree that this could be a grower over time but I’ve felt that way with the last two albums as well. Right now after 3 times through it will probably slot in the bottom 3 of their catalog for me. If you trim the fat and keep it at 10 or 11 tracks it might be higher.
I feel the same way, if they kept it to a single disc it would be way better
Brett hinds and Matt Pike from High on Fire are putting a project together and pretty sure Brett guest spotted on Matt's new solo album releasing
A very good album! dark and very grim and personal dealing with life and death! 4.5/5
Haven't heard it yet, it is headed my way in the mail. I would love to hear a review of the latest Tremonti album if you've gotten to it. I'm liking it more with every listen.
Hey Pete, did you checked the last Gojira album?
Ive just downloaded Crack The Skye to start my Mastodon journey as you recommended it as place to start the other day Pete 👍 🤠 ....if I love it I will def try this one next as it's cool sometimes with new artists to start with a classic and then a newer record to help guage the journey the band have had a bit. Sounds like they are a consistently impressive band.
Wonderful album, for me their best album.its a grower, it's so addictive once you've really got to know the songs.
there's something for everyone on this album.
This album is growing on me. It is almost 5 out of 5 now.
I bought the t shirt.
I got this cd the other day, but will have to wait a few days to listen. I'm staying with my grandma for a while
Album of the year along with Between buried and me.
I almost didn't get this one, the last three albums left me kinda cold and then I saw them in concert a few months before the lockdown, and the concert was (to me) S"#T! They're great musicians, but for some reason nothing was happening at that show, it was just so monotonous and lifeless...Anyway, I'm so glad I got this new album! Soooo great! Love the fact that (like Maiden) it's divided in 2 discs, so you can really appreciate each song for what it is, and not being dragged thru a 80m long journey, where you'll more than likely end up tired, not because of the quality of the songs, but simply because an album shouldn't be longer than 50m. Great album, love the more moody tracks and the guitar SOLOS are STELLAR! Great come-back for Mastodon here!
This album’s a grower. I like it the more I listen to it. I thought it was a bit long as well first few listens, makes more sense now.
Great record
Thanks u for introducing me to progressive roc
I think that, the initial 3 songs opening up disc 2 might lower the previous rush set by disc 1. But, on their own, I think they are classy songs. Had it All- I love its reflective tones, super chorus and its bloody brilliant hearing Kim from Soundgarden let loose an emotive soaked wah wah solo. Dagger sounds like something from a movie- perhaps it sticks out a bit too much from the other songs and seems a tad outta place, enen though in its own right, its a cool track. Overall though, its a brilliant album. The soaring highs and rushes from the high points everywhere else is gonna be a joy to uncover more over repeated listens!
This might be their best record since CTS. Really great vibe and sound, some songs definitely drag but that’s my only complaint. Otherwise this album has some great highs. 8/10
Like pretty much all double albums, would be better with cut down to one with just the best tracks. Would probably be as good as Emperor of Sand then. Good to see Troy getting the lion's share of the vocals; his voice is so great for their music and is an underrated metal vocalist in general.
Thanks Pete if you dig I buy..
Album is fucking awesome. Peace and tranquility could be my favorite song on the whole album. Think u need some more listens Pete. But, it is a grower cause at first the differences they show caught me off guard. Now? Phenomenal and 5/5 for me. And yea I do like it a bit more than emperor. It’s more a band album. U could really tell that from Jaguar god off last one being a definite Brent tune n the others heavy Bill types. I think cold dark place was a perfect go between between the two Lp’s. Mastodon has ruled for 20 years for me so maybe I’m biased. Good review though
Thanks for this review, Pete. Not familiar with the band so will give this a listen though an initial reaction is that at almost an hour and a half, that is likely a bit too long based on your discussion. Thank again for providing us with these reviews each week.
better start with 'Crack The Skye'....50 minutes with no filler. And if the opening track 'Oblivion' doesn't impress you straight off the bat it's unlikely nothing else by the band will.
@@arto2533 Thanks for the recommendation. Always appreciate starting the path with advice from someone who knows the way. Will give it a listen over the next week when time permits. Thanks again for taking the time to offer some thoughts.
Duuuude!...you didn't just diss on Had it all?! You're breaking my heart Fredo
I agree with you Pete, the start of the second disc starts off a little slow. Dagger and Had it All don’t do much for me. I have to say though that to me Peace and Tranquillity is my favourite song on the album. Great catchy chorus. It’s a 4/5 for me as well
Great review, I do feel like Had It All gives a nice change of pace then we get smashed in the face again by Savage Lands. Overall fantastic album.
Anyone else wish Brent sang more than two intros in this album?!
So funny. Had It All is my favorite track. Troy’s vocals are poignant & the music is just epic.
Is this our very first visual blooper?
yeah, I put up the wrong image! LOL! It's been fixed.
Gotta check this out, Botrell produced it, it has to sound great.
Not heard it yet, but on the subject of could some of the tracks be culled, please not another 60/70 mins single disc, it just doesn't work. Back in the day some double albums had a final side that was only half groove, and that was fine because the band were saying we've got this much good stuff which isn't quite a full double, but we're not going to pad it out. So if stuff is to be culled, have a shorter second disc.
It’s funny I was kinda bored and a little disappointed on my first play through. I felt like there should of been more Brent vocals but the more I listen to it the more it becomes one of my favorite albums, typical mastodon, it’s a grower haha
I find that you can always count on Mastodon. They’ve yet to make a bad album.
I went into OMRTS with low expectations but it was actually really good imo
Haven't heard The Hunter or Remission yet
I miss Brent's vocals.
Yes! He brings the soul
Why does that look like udo and not mastodon
yeah, I put up the wrong image! LOL! It's been fixed.
Solid disc, but overlong and too many light tracks. My least favorite of the cleaner vox era
To my detriment...to my detriment
Im weird in that the hunter is my favorite
Not any more, this album is a absolute all timer
When will these bands learn to fit the entire album on ONE compact disc. Remove the filler and keep it a tight 80 minutes. Even Pete wants shorter albums!
2 discs is the way to go. Even if the album is barely 80m long. Just allows it to breathe.
Good album. Not enough vocals from Brent, it's too long, and some of the songs blend together.
I really didn’t care for this album. I’ve listened to it a dozen times now and I’ll continue giving it a shot but I just didn’t find it interesting. The things that drew me to Mastodon, the intensity, the crazy riffs, the non stop drum fills, the concepts. All of it feels lacking here. The lack of Brent is EXTREMELY noticeable and I don’t like it. They had a good blend of Bills heavy and Brents wacky. I understand we won’t get another Leviathan but I just really wasn’t feeling this one
Hardly any vocals from Brent
LGP
Should’ve had 11/12 tracks tops. Gets boring IMO.
Really boring album. Too many long, mellow tracks. Hardly any aggression anymore. Disappointment of the year for me.
No, that's the new Iron Maiden album.
@@jaysonraphaelmurdock8812 Both are very boring.
I totally agree, the pacing is horrendous. They should have split the album similar to Opeth with Deliverance/Damnation. There are moments of brilliance but it's a meandering mess with really bad pacing. I also thought the latest Gojira, Opeth and Dream Theater albums were very disappointing too.
@@thevomit5851 Yeah, I agree with the split album idea. Give us one heavy album and then I can avoid the boring, sappy one.
Well, it is an album dedicated to their deceased manager. So, what did you expect?
Im gonna be honest. This is one of the most piece of shit records I’ve heard in a long time. And i’ve admired these guys for a while.
LOL what a joke
Album of the year, they’ve got the best discography in metal the past 2 decades.
