I cannot stop listening to this album. They have matured into a fine wine and I think this is possibly the best record they have put out. It's lush with emotion, you can feel them coming to terms with the death of their manager. You can feel the very deep pain and heartfelt emotion draw to some closure over 15 sublime tracks. It's a masterpiece.
The first time I listened to the album I wasn't sure I liked it, but I keep coming back to it and it has grown on me so much. Now I think it might be my favorite of theirs just behind Crack the Skye. Amazing record!
This album has forced me to face my mental issues and eventually given me the power to start working on getting better. I am grateful. Hope you enjoy it.
“Pain With an Anchor” is one of the craziest opening tracks I’ve heard in a long time. Definitely one of my favorites that Mastodon has ever written. Good reaction!
'More Than I Could Chew' is one of the best songs on the record. It didn't initially jump out to me upon my first listen, but after the following 3 or 4 listens it got better and better with each listen and is one of my favorites.
The record format is really the best for this album as it needs to be digested in chunks. I love that you're recognizing the power of the slow tempo. These guys all shared a love of Melvins and Neurosis which is what got them to play together. Speaking of slow tempo power, you may have had this requested before, but please listen to Yob on this channel. Their most recent album "Our Raw Heart" is fantastic. If you hear just one song, listen to Ablaze.
Yeah I've recommended Yob at some point to Jim too. Love Our Raw Heart. Id love Jim to do the best doom album of recent times though first....Clearing The Path To Ascend. But what the hey. Yob are fantastic👍❤️🔥
So glad you're checking this one out. What I love about Mastodon is that, no matter what they release, I can be sure that I'll be smiling through the entire thing. They have been one of my favourites ever since Crack the Skye, which is when I really got into them.
Little late to ur initial listening party but this album is just otherworldly. With the subject nature of this album, it helped me get thru some difficult stuff following the passing of my father. The emotions that flow from the music and the lyrics are the reason this album resonates with me. The closing trio of songs are just epicly powerful stuff and ur an unfeeling fool if it doesn't pull a reaction outta you.
Not sure if anyone’s ever suggested Baroness, but their album Purple or Yellow & Green might be right up your alley. Baroness have a sound of their own but are not totally unrelated to Mastodon (in my eyes). Cheers
Hell yeah Mastodon! Have you listened to the entire "Crack the Skye" yet? in case you have not, please do! it will change your life :) Keep the vids coming my man, rock on!
Completly a great record. I started 2 weeks ago listening to it. And I'm completly in love. I never been to much into mastadon. But this record catched me interely. Also because the basic concept is about death. And maybe for my mother died on the start of the year, that's the reason this album catched my attention 👌🏼👌🏼
I own every major record this band has put out but for some reason I was hesitant to get into this one. This listen-a-long has convinced me to jump onboard with both feet. Fantastic stuff, so far where I am during this video Sickle and Peace is my favorite.
This album is growing on me big time. With each listen it just gets better and better... I would love it if you listened to the whole album (eventually). ☺
I've only ever given Mastodon a passing interest over the years, but so far I'm liking what I've heard. Particularly that final track was right in my wheelhouse. Nice melody and heavy proggy riffs and breakdowns. I'll be adding that one to a playlist for sure.
Hey Jim it's great that your checking them out you really need to hear the other side too and they brought in the guy from the claypool lennon Delirium on synths as well as a live member
Hell yes Jim! I suggested you check this one out a while back and I somehow missed the notification that you posted these videos. Got a nice stout in hand and can't wait to check out your impressions of this monstrous record from my favorite band. Keep the awesome content coming. Have a great day my man!🤘
All their albums are very good, great or phenomenal. Their whole discography is like a big acid trip from extreme times and extreme music to almost classical prog rock. Love this band so much. Greetings from Poland 👍. PS. Brann, Troy and Brent are singing in Mastodon. Bill only screams sometimes. Kim Thayil is playing the guitar solo in "Dagger," that's the guy from Soundgarden.
Seriously Jim, do this album! I have been too busy with life to listen to it yet. It would be very cool to hear the album the first time with you. Much appreciated, Jamie
Lots of people whine about "Sickle & Peace" but to me I think its the most dynamic and impressive song on the album. The lyrics and progression are insane. You can feel the pain and mental cycle they went through losing their dear friend and manager before they made it. Good contrast between calming, introspective, rage, heartbreak and it cycles much like it does in life. Grief. In unpredictable waves of emotion. The song nails the unpredictable and sometimes beautiful phases you pass through on the path to enlightenment and acceptance.
Absolutely man! I personally love the track. The main riff has a real Southern Rock vibe (a cool tribute to their home base), which with their own prog metal foundation and signature vocal sharing duties is just killer. Like you said..."The dynamics".
If someone had told me that someday I'd hear funky guitars in Mastodon I wouldn't have believed them. Yet here we are in 2021, they did it and it sounds like pure Mastodon. These guys are something else. Fun fact: Kim Thayil is Soundgarden's guitarist.
This is my first proper listen of this record Jim. Glad it's with you. Oh and I'm only just recently checking Mastadon out. Have their big 3 albums. Not a dedicated fan yet but it's up in the air....🛫🙏😎...my first impressions though are they sound like a more lovable Dream Theatre quite often. Of the newish heavy American bands I think my faves are Elder and Yob..... Mastadon might make it as the third based on this and what I've heard so far. Def has nice doomier moments in the mix.
Dude….. I was pretty much “yeah, this is a good album” on side one…. By the end of side four I think this has been a bit of an awakening. This just keeps getting better each song. It goes in directions you don’t expect. The last side floored me!
Brilliant album. Hey Jim we have so much in common taste-wise. I strongly recommend you watch the live version of Sigur Rós - Untitled 8 (Popplagið) (Msd 145's channel version) - it's absolutely stunning - You won't regret it I promise you.
I hope you release side 2 because it has the best song (at least for me haha) from this album, Gobblers of Dregs. Mastodon is alien metal, absolutely not from our world haha
This is unbelievably good album. I've been listening this non-stop since this came out and there's no signs of boredom or music wearing out. This is one of the fines records that've been released this year!
This album is a masterpiece. But still I feel it could be even better if the songs were in a different order. Especially the heavier tracks in the middle feel kinda out of place, can't explain it. But I hope this feeling goes away some day because the music is amazing and I've only listened to the whole album like 5 times. Teardrinker is the only track I would get rid of and that song is actually nowhere near awful. I just don't like the chorus melody, otherwise it's great. But I wonder, what if they did this double album like Deliverance and Damnation and have one heavy album and one filled with just the proggy and moody stuff? I know the latter would probably be my favorite Mastodon album ever as my favorite tracks from them are The Czar, The Last Baron, The Sparrow and White Walker.
Well, it starts very civilized; nothing wrong with the first song so far. I like it. Sounds a bit like Opeth. I even like the heavy bit because it is intelligent loud music in stead of being loud just because you can. Second song. I quite like it.; less impressed with the singer compared to the other one from the first song. Third song. The best song so far. I like the structure of it. Fourth song. The second singer makes me feel a bit uncomfortable. Musically it’s very good. They’re not too heavy for me, this Mastodont 😇 band. I’m a bit impressed. I think the hair on the head of men slowly descends. I now have hair on my hands where there never was any hair at all and much less on my head.
Referring to your comment about hair. I'm reminded of the comedian Gallagher years ago talking about how his hair was migrating down his back. He said, in a few years I'll be able to sit on the toilet and it won't be cold 😂

Loving this album! Can’t turn it off! Captivating is an understatement!

Cracker of an album and definitely gets better with every listen, the boys in Mastodon are unstoppable really
