I could have sworn you guys did a Mastodon ranking? !? Saw this band late last year with Opeth. I cannot adequately write how great this band was on this tour. Especially the new tunes from H& G. They exploded off the stage. I was right up front and I could not get enough of this great band. Have to see them again soon.

Necrotic Nick- I think we had them on a poll forever ago but they got out voted by another band. I saw them twice this year. Once with Opeth and Khemmis and then not too long ago with Ghost. The one with Ghost was a meet and greet too. They were just solid dudes overall. Very down to earth and humble as hell.

    11) Cold Dark Place
    10) Medium Rarities
    9) The Hunter
    8) Once More ‘Round the Sun
    7) Hushed and Grim
    6) Emperor of Sand

    Well for me its:
    8. The Hunter
    7. Once More Around the Sun
    6. Emperor of Sand
    5. Hushed and Grimm
    4. Blood Mountain
    3. Remission
    2. Leviathan
    1. Crack the Skye
The rawness of the first two is where I found the band and was intrigued. I can place every record on a number one spot when judging the records to others in their league. Mastodon is an ever evolving machine that should never quit. Great video guys.

    • @thrallsofmetal

This is the band that changed my life forever as Shred put it. Great band for a ranking as each album is so unique. All amazing, Hushed and Grim might move up as time goes on. It’s so cathartic, but here’s my ranking
    1. Crack the skye
    2. OMRTS
    3. Blood Mt

  • @nelsonshuchmacherendebo7688

This was an incredible discussion, boys. Loved the little story about Mike Keneally, Shred. I strongly recommend his record "The Universe Will Prevail", it's amazing music. He did a whole record of piano renditions of Steve Vai tunes years ago - a killer piano player on top of a world class guitar player. He toured with Vai and Satriani for a while too, if I am not mistaken. An incredible musician.
Back to the ranking: love how you brought out the passion into this video. I agree with you, this ranking is extra hard to do, although it's clear to me Once More 'Round the Sun is inferior to the rest of the discography, even though it has High Road, one of my favorite Mastodon songs... but, like you guys said, every record has certified bangers, and so does that one.
    Mine is:
    1. Leviathan (my intro to the band back when it was released, and I love every second of it)
    2. Crack the Skye (masterpiece but it doesn't get the emotional story I have with Leviathan)
    3. Hushed & Grim (their Physical Graffiti, the fact they could pull off a record this varied, yet coherent, and this fucking good at this point in the career is an indication, imho, that this body of work is going to be legendary when the band quits)
    4. Remission (bangers everywhere)
    5. Blood Mountain (bangers almost everywhere)
    6. Emperor of Sand (bangers almost everywhere)
    7. The Hunter (uneven flow, but lots of bangers)
    8. Once More 'Round the Sun (not so many bangers, definitely has some filler)

    • @thrallsofmetal
      @thrallsofmetal  Год назад +1

Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! I loved doing this one since we're all big fans of the band but I also dreaded it since I love all their albums. I legit know nothing about Keneally but playing Vai on piano has my interest peaked for sure. I totally get having nostalgia play a big part in a ranking. Remission was my first one but it did fall a bit just because others have aged better. I still love Once More 'Round the Sun too but there's a few songs that I don't like as much. They just have a flat out killer discography.

Necrotic Nick- When we reviewed Hushed & Grim I was a bit surprised to see how divisive the fan base was when it came down to the first 3 versus the last 5 of their albums. @@thrallsofmetal Yeah, the later albums have a lot going on so they might not hit immediately. There are always a couple songs that are balls to the wall riff fests, next to something more experimental or atmospheric. But the depth is nice, the early albums will always be there if I want something more direct. Now that I've grown to appreciate the diversity, I find myself going back to my favorites off the later albums if I need a quick Mastodon fix. Mastodon doesn't have a bad album IMO, but if I had to rank them, personally it would go like this :
    1) Crack the Skye - masterpiece will never be surpassed. they set the bar too high with this one.
    2) Hushed and Grim ( Musically alone it would probably be a bit lower , however i have a very deep connection with this album due to losing my father to brain cancer exactly two months after this was released)
    3) Emperor of Sand - unpopular opinion, maybe, but this album made me go into the mastodon Rabbit Hole.
    4) leviathan - absolute banger! Nough said.
    5) Blood Mountain - was the turning point for the band into prog, gotta love it.
    5) Once more round the sun - has some not very memorable songs but other that are are too good.
    6) Cold Dark place - Technically Brent's project performed by the band, and not really an album. But God damn he is a musical genius, guitar parts are complex yet melodic, brann's signing on this EP is one of his best.
    7) The Hunter - at some point it was my least favorite album but it has been growing on me lately. The title track is a vibe. I think the band got a bit depleted after crack the Skye, however, still a good album !
    8) Remission - pioneering album , pure sludge, Brann's drumming is monstrous, but I do prefer their melodic albums. Great album anyway, good for gym.
    9) Call of the Mastodon - Again technically not an official album , not bad not great, barely listen to it.
I wrote my comment before watching the video, Curious to see how it compares!!

Necrotic Nick- I totally agree that Mastodon have nothing but killer albums but I love seeing Hushed & Grim get some love. I think it got dismissed by some people but, while it's softer and more gloomy, it's that way for a reason and it's the themes that connect to me as well. It's literally the stages of grief in a musical form. Leviathan is still such a banger but Crack the Skye is simply jaw-dropping. I think it's one of the best modern prog metal albums out there.

@@thrallsofmetal I completely agree 💯%... Hushed and Grim is an album that I feel has the purest most sincere writing mastodon has ever done, it's just pure grief and sorrow with elements of peace ,trascendence, love, all conveyed as music. My father was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer last year in September, i was overseas at the time and had to wait to travel, this album dropped exactly the day I traveled home to be with him, 29th of October. the lyrics of the album as i view them and as you mentioned, explain the feelings and emotions of suffering from a terminal illness and death of a loved one from many points of view, from the POV of the person who's ill and the care takers as well as different stages of the illness; during and after . 2 days before my father passed i played him "Had It All" the part where it says : *"the light will guide you along i can position your way you are gonna make it"* and translated the lyrics to him , it was at that moment he looked me in the eyes with his last ounce of strength saying to me he was "ready to let go" he passed away the 29th of December. Gobblers of dreg has this part where it says: *Waiting for the sun to rise so I can say my last goodbye all that I needed was your warn embrace.* Was literally what happened with my father as well.... Then songs like : Dagger, skeleton of splendour.. packed with emotions. Knowing that these guys have dealt with so much tragedy and grief as well, Bill losing his mum to brain cancer too (same prognosis as my dad), Nick from pancreatic cancer and so on.. makes this album hit close to heart for me, thus, why i ranked it so high. Sorry for my rant I felt like I had to explain more thoroughly why it's No.2 for me. Nothing will ever surpass *Crack the Skye* tho, musically it's and absolute master piece.

Mastodon make Atlanta proud, and it is so awesome that they have had no lineup changes. Love all of the behind the scenes documentaries they have released. They work so well as a team, and I love their sense of humor. I’ve met a few of them and have only good things to say.
The only blemish on their career from a personnel standpoint is all of the history with Scott Kelly. No shade to Thralls, Mastodon, or even Neurosis, but the things Scott Kelly did to abuse his family were so disturbing that Neurosis won’t even specify what they discovered recently.
I just think it’s important to recognize that Scott is no longer with Neurosis, and his actions (not just ideologies) harmed the people closest to him.

I have a lot of the special editions of the albums with all the in studio stuff as well as The Workhorse Chronicles. They just solid dudes and remain very humble and approachable. Yeah, I don't think anyone knew how bad things had gotten with Scott but man that is just some disturbing, dark shit. I almost don't want to know the gory details on that one. I still love Neurosis but it's been hard to go back to those albums here lately because of that.

Fucking love Mastodon. I discovered them in 2006, right after Blood Mountain dropped (though knew them from NFS: Most Wanted the year before, with Blood & Thunder). The last few months of that year I got into Mastodon, Lamb of God & Gojira. Man, was I blown away. It was a sound that I've never heard before anywhere. The sheer technical skill was mind-blowing. That must've been a hell of an experience. The amazing artwork and the fact that the first 4 albums were based on elements (CtS is ether) just sealed the deal for me. Necrotic Nick- I may have seen Clutch more than any other band live. I've been a fan since Transnational Speedway League honestly and I'd love to rank their discography one day.

Looking foward to a very difficult rating. Every album is very good and different. Kind of like rating Tarintino movies. It depends on what mood you are in.
Gun to my head... I guess I would pick Blood Mountain #1 but can't go wrong with any of there albums. Ask me next year and maybe I pick Hushed and Grim #1. Curious to see your rankings.

Necrotic Nick- I love all these albums but Crack the Skye has always been a flat out mesmerizing album from start to finish. It's some the best songwriting in modern prog metal I think I've ever heard still. This was tough to rank though since all their albums are so damn good.

Right there with most of you guys in that I've been with Mastodon since the beginning. I still think Leviathan is their high water mark. The introduction of Brann's vocals on Crack the Skye was welcome and added a layer that shaped the greatness of that album, but should have stopped with that album. I'm not hating on his vocals, but it's just not what I want (clean vocals) from my Mastodon, which is why I consistently go back to their first three albums. Good show, guys!

Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! As soon as I heard that monstrous opening riff to March of the Fire Ants I was pretty much hooked. Leviathan was closer than the others to overtaking Crack the Skye but that album is truly something otherworldly. I'm still in awe of the songwriting on to this day. I like that they now have a 3 person vocal dynamic with 3 distinctly different vocalists. I still love all the heavier stuff but man can Brann make a chorus soar.

Probably my favorite from them is Emperor of Sand, I’m not too familiar with their discography but that one connected.
Can’t wait for the Crowbar ranking! One of my favorite bands ever…maybe one day you could do my all time favorite, Nevermore.
    Cheers!

Necrotic Nick- I love all their albums and I always find a new favorite song to jam on each album. Word to the Wise might have one of the best choruses they've ever written but honestly, just dive headfirst into Mastodon's back catalog and you'll find a ton of killer music. I'm looking forward to going over Crowbar and I'd love to do Nevermore in the future for sure.
