Toilet won’t stop running water, adjusting float for fix.

- If your toilet is constantly running water and sounds like a fountain, it may be a simple fix… adjusting the float valve. Just remove the tank lid and look for the big floaty thing (in some toilets it looks like a big rubber ball, in others it’s a plastic cylinder), then look for a way to adjust the float so that it triggers the valve and turns it off.
I selected your video because the float in your toilet is the same as in mine. I turned/adjusted my float counterclockwise and waited a little while. It sounds like it’s fixed!!! I’m a 71 yo “try to do it myself-er” and you just saved me $125. God Bless You!!
Thank you so much. As a pensioner, I had the arm tied up with ribbon for two days and dreaded the cost of calling a plumber . I looked at many videos before I came across yours. I was nervous to try it at first and only did a quarter turn which wasn’t quite enough but I could see it had made some difference so I tried a bit more and bingo it worked. I could have cried with relief. Thank you so much.
Perfect solution, quick, short and to the point video that gives a fix that worked for me. So many videos on RUclips that are unnecessarily long-winded, this is not one.
🙏🙏🙏Thank you, Luke. Without seeing your video, I would have had a whole lot more problems than one might imagine. I have two washrooms with the exact same situation as in your video. Initially, I really didn't have a clue how to fix it. The water leaking was so severe that it caused my basement to flood, almost damaging my AC unit. Of course, my house's main pipe has a crack somewhere, so the leaked water ran alongside the outer layer of the main pipe from the 3rd floor to the 2nd floor and down to the basement. Years before, it was just a few occasional drops, but with two toilets leaking 24/7, it was a totally different story.
I even prepared a plan to evacuate all the stuff from the basement to avoid the leaks. I put whole piles of old newspapers to soak up the excessive water; in just two hours, 10 inches (22 cm) of thick newspapers got wet! Then, I started looking on RUclips for help and was extremely lucky to encounter your video. Now, one washroom is completely fixed; the second one is waiting to be de-calcified (as I mixed warm water with vinegar to dissolve the mineral deposits that have accumulated over the years inside the tank).
Great credit goes to your video for relieving all my concerns. Truly, thank you for your practical site. Many thanks and warm regards. Great work lasts forever! 🙏🙏🙏
I wish all DIY videos were so well put together - absolutely on point and easy to follow. Good job!!
76 yt old woman with no ability to diy. But this worked!! Thank you thank you❤❤
Adjust the float by turning the plastic screw counter clockwise.
This is exactly what I did, and this SOLVED the problem.
THANK YOU!
I went over a couple of videos until I found yours. Thank you so much for making it so easy to fix my toilet. You are awesome.
Thanks for your help with our plumbing 👍
Sending prayers for you and your family 🙏
Going through the cost of living crisis in the UK at the moment. Living in a rented house and the plan to hire a plumber & notifying our landlord was terrifying. Thankfully this worked. Thank you so much, we've saved the cost of getting a plumber and saved our water bill!
It worked! 😃. I've been living with this for over 2 years. Always having to shut off the water to the whole bathroom after every flush 😮
Thank you so much for this video. My toilet was running for a full 10 minutes, but the bowl was refilling perfectly and no overflow in the tank. Don't think I would have realized to counterclockwise turn the screw (which on my model looks just more like a pen cap) but it did the trick. I know nothing about toilets and I had to fully replace an old one 6 months ago when it cracked down the side. Was panicked I'd have another big bill. This was just what I needed!
Well, that was easy! Thanks for the video - I didn't even know there was an adjustment screw in there. Worked great!!
This worked! Simple enough try out to see if it eliminates the running water issue. Thanks for the short video fix.
Adjusting it counter clockwise worked for me. I had adjusted it wrong before. Thank you! One less thing for the wife to yell about.
Thanks a lot man! I was about to purchase new assembly and gave your video one last chance and IT WORKED! Can't believe this was so simple and was bothering me for few months 😅
Great to hear!
Wow! I was going to replace the whole thing! You saved me hours of work!!! Thank you!
Hey luke i had to give thanks to you my grandma passed this year and I'm heir to her house and the guest toilet always ran you have to jiggle the handle after each flush to stop it. Well my handle is loose so i have to open the top and couldn't figure how to stop it found your vid about adjusting the float i would just hold it till it stop then it continue running after i let it go had to flush few times to adjust the float just right and fimally got it thank you so much i had no idead about adjusting float i appreciate this man
This worked for me! Thank you for saving me from this headache. Could not figure out why it was either filling or not at all, kept trying to adjust the float and I'd get too much water or none. Mine didn't have a screw, but I tried turning it counter clockwise and eventually it worked.
Thank you for this !!! solved my issue in a click!
Fixed it, thanks! Mine has been running since a 'professional' plumber installed it. Looks like it was never even adjusted on install since it was all the way down and had to be raised like an inch!
Nice work!
Thank you so much for making this video. Fixed it. 😁👍
you just save me money and time!!! Thank You
Thanks for the video mate, got me out of a pickle.
Thank you so much for your videos. Big help. Awesome video
Thanks! Short, easy to understand, fixed my problem!
That adjusted the fill level for me, stopped it from filling constantly! New problem is the leak, but thats an easy replacement.
✨🤙🏼✨ much appreciated for the instruction...saved me from buying an entire inside/set at hardware shop...
Perfect!
This actually worked !! Thank you 🙌🏼
This is the video I needed thank you
Did not realize it was that easy thank you for the vid
You are a life saver. Thank you
This worked for me. Thanks!
Ok I'm going to pause the video and go try this. I'm hoping mine is as simple as that. Thanks!
It worked! 😃👍
OMG would it be too much to say I love you? Saved my life, thank you!
You're welcome!!
Thank you, this fixed it for me
This is what fixed mine. Thank you.
Thank you I had the same floater and it was incorrectly adjusted. Now it fills the pointed "max" measurement and doesn't drip any surplus
Oah gosh thank you for this. I just fixed this right now life saver! 🌿
I will try this when I return home & hopefully it works! ✌️🙂
Thanks so much. Worked
Thanks for saving my money!!!
Wow thank you sooo much. Worked for me too

Life saver fr. Thank you
THANK YOU!!!
Right on bro! 👍🏽💯
I’ve turned it all the way up and all the way down and it changes nothing and keep overflowing in the tube. Very frustrating
Same. Did you ever find a solution? Been dealing with this for 2 days
Nope. We had to have a plumber come hand change the whole thing. A real bummer.
@@dedricthere wow. Thanks for the update
I just changed the fill valve assembly. That did the trick
@@floyd27860that’s my next move.
My water continues to raise over the float & keeps draining into the overflow tube. Please help
Mine has a hook to it. I am unable to unhook and adjust it.
I have the exact problem- water running. I have turned the adjuster ccw, and it doesn’t work. Turning more, water still runs over. … Hmmm 🤔,
My water continues to raise once the float is up & keeps draining into the overflow tube. Please help
My water use doubled compared to last year. One of the toilets is running since then. Would "just a running toilet" use so much extra water?
Fixed! Thank you
Thanks for this tip. Had the same problem and following your directions, mine is also solved
Avctually the lever attached to the floater has no purpose because it is attached to a plastic wherein supposed to make a corresponding reaction when the lever goes but when i examine the part the portion of the lever at the other part are all fix and nothing will move up there so i was wondering what the purpose if the floater and the lever.
I appreciate the video. Tysm!
I had a issue with the water running , it turns out the floater was stuck on the wall of the toilet .. moved it around and wallla shuts off proper now
Is this the same as ghost flushing??
Thanks for Video
Thanks!!!
Thank-you sooooooo Much.. you Are Awesome…….😄
What kind of screw is in there? Mine appears to be missing the screw 😒
i actually don't have this toilet anymore so i can't check on that screw. sorry!
Thank you it really worked
Thank you!!!!
It worked but by the next flush it did it again. Do I need to turn it more counterclockwise. I turned it a few times already
Yeah just keep turnin! Did it work?
So mine....I have the same set up. I adjusted it to be as far counter clockwise as it will allow.. the issue I am seeing is it never pops it up all the way. So we have to open the tank every flush once it starts to "run" and pop it up with our finger to make it stop. How do I make it pop up right?
Sounds like something is interfering with the float being able to come all the way up. It’s possible the float itself has a hole and is taking on water, or it may be a dirty or damaged arm mechanism. I’d take the float apart and inspect for damage or calcium buildup.
my water level in the back is so low that no matter how low or high i adjust the float it wont touch the water. if i add enough water to make it look like your video it will reach the float and stop but then when i flush, its back down too low again. any suggestions?
You might have a leaky flapper - search for videos on RUclips “diagnosing leaky toilet flapper” and see if that describes your problem.
Thanks 🙏
Whenever I flush my toilet after it sounds like water is dripping. But there is not physical water present
well that was easy! Thanks.
Hmmm, did this and it keeps hissing!! Any suggestions?
You could have a bad flapper, which is the big rubber flappy thing at the bottom of the tank. If that’s leaking, the water will keep running to keep up with the leak. Try manually pushing down the flapper and hold it for 30 seconds, if the water then stops running it’s probly a leaky flapper that needs to be replaced.
I did it but now my the tank won't fill up after I flushed
That sounds like your float might be obstructed. Is it somehow stuck in the up position? Make sure it can move freely to trigger the fill valve.
I changed the flapper & it continues to run. Any other suggestions?
I twisted it and now it won’t flush
Does not help at all
you're the man!
