18/10/21 I live alone and water has been leaking into my toilet pan for sometime without my knowledge. I spoke to the only plumber who called me (they are all busy) and quoted £375 for a new toilet, as what you just showed was impossible to do! Thank you. I just want to turn the water off until a proper plumber returns my call, but you have really helped me! "I am a 77 year young female plumber to be!"
I would recommend you never use the plumber who quoted £375. I guarantee your final price will be well above this due to the fact they are a con artist.
The part costs £7-£45 you can get a decent one that you will find in most toilets for £15 the job should take no more than an hour. I did mine which was in an awkward situ it took me little over 10 minutes. The only tool I used was an adjustable spanner you might need a screwdriver too.
Just on tip you never mentioned, when you replace the flush valve you must look at the old one and take the name and number, you need to get exacty the same one to fit the other part of the fitting which is below the close coupled with. If you buy the wrong one you will have to take the world pan and the cistern apart to fit the flush valve. So when your correct flush valve arrives from eBay it's simple to turn into the bottom fitting. You will then have a spare bottom fitting which will come with the flow valve. Good luck
Perfect video for my problem - toilet running continuously. Exactly as you highlighted, the flush valve wasn’t relocating correctly and despite cleaning it the problem continued. A visit to the plumbers merchant with the entire unit and a replacement slotted straight back in and the issue was resolved. Cost £18.32. Time taken to remove and refit 10 minutes. At the plumbers merchants remember to specify whether the toilet is push-button or lever operated as the mechanisms are not interchangeable. A big thumbs up for clear concise instructions, they certainly gave me the confidence to have a go.
Watched this morning as we've had a problem all week and haven't been able to find a plumber. Brilliant, went to local B&Q for the parts and hubby and I replaced the part and have solved the problem Thank you!! Our confidence rating has shot up!
Superb presentation; • brilliant focus on everything (video and subject-matter), • clear & calm voice, • all possibilities dealt with. Thanks so much for your patient and un-condescending assistance 👍🙂🔧
This morningI knew nothing about the inner workings of toilets, your video has done a fantastic job of educating me and I was able to change out the fill valve by myself. You have saved me from needing to find a plumber and increased my DIY confidence. Thank you:)
Thank you so much for this. With hubby at work, I felt completely helpless until I found this video. Issue resolved, at least temporarily, and now I know what to do if it happens again. It would be even more helpful to include how to find, recognise and turn off the isolation valve. Thanks again 🙂
Thank u so much for this video. It fixed my fill valve and saved me $600 to change the entire toilet bowl suggested by two plumbers. Luckily I didn't listen to the plumbers. I only opened the fill valve, gave the rubber ring a good rinse and it works again. I still can't believe I can actually fix a toilet bowl system myself .
Great video, so well explained. Had the local water supplier out for a faulty valve at the supply and our toilet inlet pulled a load of grit. Constant overflowing. Took the top off the inlet and cleaned all the grit out of the diaphragm and inside washer. Now as good as new. Thank you sir 🙏🏻
Life saver, watched this at midnight after constant filling, so removed flush and cleaned seal as explained and it worked.....very helpful and well explained, thanks.
3 minutes in and I am very impressed with the efficiency, clear explanations and overall informative approach. I wish he could explain/teach all the videos.
I think there’s a reason your video came up first! Perfectly explained. Slightly strange, but there was no outer washer on the fill valve on ours. I cleaned the inner one up and it works fine again. Thank you for your valuable information 🙏
This really helps. Thank you for posting this video. In my case, only the button was broken. Managed to find a replacement. But this video helped me to understand what exactly is required to fix. The tutorial helped me to understand when exactly a valve replacement is required. Instead of buying the whole valve, i fixed the issue only with the flush button. Flush button are available for sale in most hardware stores. Take care
just what i needed to know! thankyou, things are working perfectly now! The trickiest bit was the flush valve removal-- finding the centre of the clicks to withdraw it - a mirror on a stick was really helpful to see where the plastic locator was positioned relative to the exit slot..
Cheers! In my case a bit of loose silicone in the cistern had got caught under the seal of the flush valve.. a two minute job removing it, thanks. - a very clear video. Saved me a lot of hassle. .
Have just fully asserted my dominance over a toilet that was running on. Thank you for the helpful video. Your explanation of how the system worked as opposed to how proprietary parts worked was really useful. Have a good weekend.
Don't know what I've done, but because of this tutorial, all of a sudden, the flush got fixed. There must be something preventing the out valve completely closing, but whatever, due to your tutorial we've saved from being charged too much by that little obnoxious letting agent for wear and tear. Thanks!
Thanks for this brilliant video. I got a plumber out to look at my trickle-leaking toilet and he quoted me a price so ridiculous - getting special replacement parts and what have you - that I might as well just buy a brand new toilet. After watching this video I managed to remove the flush valve housing and the seal was full of blisters almost all around so no wonder it leaked. I punctured all of them with a needle, which helped something like 90%, but I have of course ordered a genuine Geberit seal now, delivered to my door in 3 days for £3.00. Might be looking for a new plumber in the future.
Glad to hear the video helped you understand the issue better J F. Sorry to hear your plumber quoted a bad price. I hope the new seal works for you, if not as you saw the valve is not a big job. Thanks for sharing your experience. It's always nice to hear when a video helps understanding, and hopefully saves some money!
@@Artexic Thanks again. Just puncturing all the blisters in the old seal actually turned out to work 100% - not a drip coming through anymore - but I will of course replace it with the new seal when it arrives. I cannot believe how simple the fix was after having watched your video so you have genuinely made my day.
Absolute gold! I've been putting off calling out a plumber for months. Found this video and have fixed it myself. New seal on the bottom of the flush valve. £2.95 from a local plumbing supplies shop. If I could buy you a pint, I would! Many many thanks.
It was helpful... I'm from delhi, India. Plumber labour charges are getting expensive day by day here. And I was acting lazy from last 4-5 month. But today morning I choose to search a self help video about flush problem. And your video really helped.
I didn't think I'd spend today watching RUclips videos on how to fix toilets... but your video is very helpful and for now it's solved my issue! Thank you for posting it.
brilliant video so well explained. You’ve saved me a fortune as I thought I would have to get a plumber but I’ve been able to solve the issue myself with your help. Thank you.
Super helpful video, thanks so much! I’ve had a leaky toilet with an inlet valve that tip taps and has driven me bonkers. I’ve changed the flush seal but still have a dribble into the bowl so I’m off to fix the inlet valve, and feel more confident about doing so. Excellent video! 🎉
Definitely the best of these toilet cistern water leak videos, by far! I now feel certain we can fix our troublesome tank that's topping itself up every 10-15 mins. Thanks very much!
Had some mishaps today installing a bidet, and i think my fill valve is shot. I was not at all familiar with low flow/push button toilets before this. Thank you for the clear, concise video.
The tip to change only the flush valve was fabulous! Screw out the old one, screw in the new one and job done. Very smart guy! Thank you again for saving us time and money. Well done!
Hi, thanks for the informative video. Works a charm. One extra hint that I used was to turn the supply off and leave overnight. The cystern emptied so I knew it was the washer at the base of the flush unit and not the supply washer. Thanks again.
Good video overall. I have not see the fill valve structure opened up before. Usually, I end up replacement the entire thing. Good to know there are options. Thank you.
I have same issue with flow valve but design is different. Always a good idea to keep the information on new unit so that replacement spares can be sourced. Back to bathroom. Very clear explanation. Thanks.
Very comprehensive thanks, I have both issues and have had since not long after these were purchased new when I moved in. These designs are made to not last long. My mum has an old house and after 50 years her ball valve system is still working as it should. It's just covered in cobwebs. I wish they still made them like this. It's just a little old fashioned having the feed going in for the side at the top, but they last forever. These plastic valves need working on every few years
I had a problem where the water was passing into the overflow. Took the cap off the inlet valve, gave the rubber seal a good brushing, fitted it back together and it's good as new. Only 5 minites of my time. Thanks for the video 👍
I've got a slightly differnt kind, but like you said the design while looks different is similar enough that I could understand where my issues was coming from. Thank you for a very helpful video.
Thanks for the video. The round washer you shown is not mainly responsible to stop the water intake. The water is stopped by a tiny rubber piece attached at the bottom of the other end of the lever. Hope this will save few bucks. I just cleaned it and it worked
Having exact same issue took apart and found washer has disinterested! Can’t find one anywhere to replace to having to buy a full mechanism. Thankyou for the really helpful step by step video
Great video. Very helpful. I used the toilet in my sisters the other day and it went into freeflow / overflow from the fill valve. Unfortunately there was no cut off switch and the one for the whole house had to be turned off. Sent this to my brother in law & hopefully found it useful.
Thank you, thank you, thank you. I’m a very handy man but always busy with work and I had been putting off fixing our leaky toilet for months but it has been ANNOYING me sooo much. Eventually today I found some time but have never had to repair something like this before, your video was spot on and I diagnosed the issue in seconds, cleaned away the limescale and bloo cleaner scum, hey presto, leak sorted and it didn’t cost me a penny. 👍
Great video - thanks - my issue was the flush valve mechanism being calced-up and I didn't know how to get the b'stard thing out. After the obligatory forehead slap for how simple it actually was I've soaked the whole unit in descaler, replaced and it now works like new.
Well done - very helpful video. A slight adjustment with a screw driver on the inlet valve cured the overflow problem. Stuck a piece of tissue under the pan rim to ensure no further leak. Thank you
Thanks for sharing on the strip down of the inlet valve. I took mine apart to find small bits of grit or whatever it was. But after a clean up " NO LEAKING OVER FLOW" thanks for sharing that info 👍
very well explained, thank you so much. Saved my day and money. There were little wood stiches attached to the diafram. Cleaned them and now it works perfect.
Thanks ! Great explanation for someone who has absolutely no clue what to do! Ordered a new outlet part as still a very slight trickle after cleaning it 👍
I had the same problem I was thinking I had to call a plumber and knew that it would cost me a lot.after watching this video I was able to fix this problem by myself. Thank you
Thank you SO much for your vid! I’ve just fixed my constantly filling toilet (slightly different to yours but same principle) by getting that little washer out of the fill valve, washing it with soap and warm water and re-installing it. Bingo! Thanks again 🙏
Great video, explains the potential problems very well. My problem is that the flush valve doesn't seal properly. Where you shook it and the valve dropped - that just doesn't happen with mine so water leaks into the pan as fast as it comes into the cistern. Now I know how to fix it myself. Many thanks. I wonder how much your video will save me!
Thank you for the video, very helpful. It's the middle of the night and I couldn't sleep because my toilet was dripping and kept refilling. It turned out the flush valve just needed unscrewing and once I put it back in it stopped. I wouldn't have known to try that without this video.
Thanks for this :-) my cistern has been overflowing massively for weeks now, and im a bit of a tight arse when it comes to paying plumbers etc. I dod have to replace the whole inlet valve, which was under £20. Im happy with that, Job no2, replace bottle trap on a small sink. Job No3 is massive and needs a digger in my front garden , as i dont think there will be any tips on here to fix that one sadly. Thanks Again
On the back of this brilliant tutorial, I have cleaned hard water scale off of the outlet valve seal and seal seat. The pan is no longer filling up. Many Thanks.
EXCELLENT PRESENTATION, both my toilets have been problamatic in recent months. Trouble is, whenever I look for help on YT , NONE of the vids, have ever shown the same inner's, that my two have. INCREDIBLE--just how many models are there, to do such a simple job ? There is some hope here though, one toilet's Cistern has a slight but continuos run of water, AFTER, it has refilled the cistern, but somehow, it never goes over a certain level mark, that i have put on the inside wall. Another mystery, is that the overflow, which is just a straight upright plastic pipe; has a black plastic cap on it . HOW, would a full overflow of water, escape down the pipe, and avoid a flooding ? unless, as shown here, the water is running down the toilet pan, back wall,? I shall test and report back.
Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video. I know nothing about these sorts of things and was all set to get someone in to fix my leaky flush valve. However after watching your video I managed to remove the flush valve, gave the rubber seal a bit of a clean up, and the problem was fixed! Thank you!
Really an amazing video. I have the same issue with my cistern inlet valve. Seems to be the same washer or upper diaphragm that needs replacing. Thank you for informational session
Really helpful, helped me IDENTIFY and then fix the leaking issue....a new seal (£ 2.00) and THE VIDEO was very helpful on how to get the flushmaster unit out thank you.
Brilliant and well explained friend ... I don't yet if one of them scenarios you described is the problem until I check at the property tomorrow .. my system is brand new, it's similar to yours but it has a little pipe running from the Float system .
Thank you so much for the video my problem was in the flush valve. I simply removed it cleaned it and put it in. It's solved the problem temporarily. So I think the suction cup needs replacing, could you show how the flush valve dismantles. That would be great.❤️
I was a bit confuse of how to fix the inlet valve , but after watching you clear video ,i am confident that i can fix it with no fuss thanks friend , by way do they have the valve rubber spare in the market , your help please ,,
Thanks! The system shown didn't match my system exactly (mine seems a bit older) but the premise was still the same and following your instructions helped greatly!
Million Thanks! not sure of your name, but wonderful clear explanation with the fact that problem could be cause by 1 out of 3 possibilities, watch another videos that were rubbish and made believe problem would only be the main pump washer, which did not solve my problem. not 100% sure, but I might have managed to avoid calling/paying a plumber. God Bless you 🙏🙏🙏and everyone that help us doing it from their heart ❤ 🙏🙏🙏
My toilet has long float arm. After watching video i undid flush valve a found what looks like plumbers tape stuck under flush valve. Also turned over inlet washer. I think i know what caused the problem. Correct me if i am wrong, but i filled up bucket under overflow and tipped in toilet bowl which i think caused problem. Thank you even though our toilets are totally different apert from cleanliness. Thanks from Australia. Now time for the best Stout in the world Coopers .from Australia.
Thank you I done it , it was very helpful, there was small plastic piece was stuck on washer at bottom, I took plastic out and it’s working perfectly fine now
Very clear and concise but cannot replace flush valve & or washer, the problem is the flush valve will not come out despite considerable controlled exertion. Thinking it must be fixed underneath the tank where I cannot get to it.
Thanks for great video, best of its kind on RUclips. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and for your excellent clear detail of diagnosis and replacement. Managed to fit a new £12 fill valve thanks to your super guidance. Problem solved, water saved, plumber visit avoided. Cheers!

Genius, I didn't realise it just clipped out and thought the whole thing would need removing and sealing. Saved me a plumber, thank you.
Certainly worlds more intelligible and professional compared with the first few videos as lined up by RUclips. Very effective instruction. Thank you.
Watching this video has saved me a lot of money. for the price of a washer from Screwfix £1.60 I managed to fix the leek myself. Brilliant!!!!
Superb presentation;
• brilliant focus on everything (video and subject-matter),
• clear & calm voice,
• all possibilities dealt with.
Thanks so much for your patient and un-condescending assistance 👍🙂🔧

Watched a few related videos but this one is by far the clearest explanation for this type of closed system. Thank you.
Thank you so much for this. With hubby at work, I felt completely helpless until I found this video. Issue resolved, at least temporarily, and now I know what to do if it happens again. It would be even more helpful to include how to find, recognise and turn off the isolation valve. Thanks again 🙂
my hubby is always at home, but just a lazy xxxxxx as they came 😂😂😂😂

Take care
just what i needed to know! thankyou, things are working perfectly now!

Huge thanks for this, had no clue how to fix it but you explained it and showed it so clearly it’s done the job 👍🏼
Out of all the videos I watched, this us the one that really helped me fix my toilet flush

A good video. Just like our toilet. They do seem to vary somewhat. I'm confident now to sort our dribbling loo. Thanks.
An excellent video on fixing three main leaks in a dual flush toilet cistern. Very well explained. Thank you very much!
Saved me I live alone too .. and I was surprised I can fix things 😀 thanks to you 🙏🏻
Thank you so much, before I finished watching the video I fixed mine for 3 days none stop. Thank you
Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video. I know nothing about these sorts of things and was all set to get someone in to fix my leaky flush valve. However after watching your video I managed to remove the flush valve, gave the rubber seal a bit of a clean up, and the problem was fixed! Thank you!
Really helpful and clear video which has explained exactly how this flush system works.
Thank you friend .. Your distinctive voice made this precise demonstration absolutely clear & Comprehensive .
Really an amazing video. I have the same issue with my cistern inlet valve. Seems to be the same washer or upper diaphragm that needs replacing. Thank you for informational session
Brilliant ! I managed to fix my toilet, i would never have believed it possible. Thank you so much
Great video. Solved the problem in two minutes.
Really helpful, helped me IDENTIFY and then fix the leaking issue....a new seal (£ 2.00) and THE VIDEO was very helpful on how to get the flushmaster unit out thank you.
Thanks for the feedback, it's always great to hear a video helped someone. A £2 fix is impressive!
Brilliant and well explained friend ... I don't yet if one of them scenarios you described is the problem until I check at the property tomorrow .. my system is brand new, it's similar to yours but it has a little pipe running from the Float system .
My outlet seal got jammed not knowing what to do. Thank you kind sir for making this video. My flush is working now.
Finally a video that helped me with my problem after teo hours of trial and error. Thank you so much
Thank you so much for the video my problem was in the flush valve. I simply removed it cleaned it and put it in. It's solved the problem temporarily. So I think the suction cup needs replacing, could you show how the flush valve dismantles. That would be great.❤️
Very helpful - sorted out 5 minutes after watching this....Thank you...(Al).
Just managed fix my mothers toilet flush valve outlet problem after watching this, great, thank you
Excellent! The washer is just rags. Now all I need to do is find a replacement. Many thanks.

Just fixed our toilet thanks to your clear, concise explanation - thank you!
Same here. I dread to think how much water I've wasted before finding this clip.
Fixed our toilet because of your video, much appreciated my dude.
Very helpful… how do you find a replacement fill value that’s suitable for your toilet?
Just fixed my toilet. Thank you had no idea you could remove that part so easily
Cheers!
same thoughts as others here - saved a fortune with just a wiggle in the right place - and i feel like an engineer! ty
