This is one of the most special videos of John to come across, so early in his career and good quality. It's really cool seeing him here outside of massive stadiums. So honest and pure.
Hey, 2001 John Mayer, just so you know, you end up in a band comprised of the former members of the Dead and two other wicked musicians... I know, you didn't see that coming.
its crazy how much his singing has improved. he still sounds musically amazing in this vid though. he plays every song the same or better then the recording which even to this day blows my mind!
15:49. “Oh I have an acoustic guitar too”. 16:05 (starts tuning guitar). “One day we’ll have people, maybe, who will have other guitars, and hand those guitars to us...”. 2001 John I’m happy to tell you you’re right. That “one day” arrives many times and it will include SRV’s guitar tech, Renee Martinez. Dream Big. 🎸
At 00:41:24 Mayer starts with Lenny by SRV and then goes into The Wind Cries Mary. Been dying to see footage of him playing Lenny this early on. I've heard so many audio versions but never saw the video :)
This is like one month after Columbia re-release of Room for Squares. You can definitely feel the level of excitement and confidence he has as he is kicking off as an official mega label signed artist!!
You can tell that his solos during the Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic planted the seed for his monster solo in Covered In Rain (Any Given Thursday), so cool.
I think the two songs are connected.. in the live version of Covered in Rain he sings "come December Lydia left. She mentions something about it being for the best". In City Love he sings "I've got a City Love. I found it in Lydia". So City Love would be about him falling in love with that girl while Covered in Rain is about them getting together and also breaking up. I think, but might mike no sense at all ;)
@David Lightman5 Everything Is Not Broken is about Mayer dealing with September 11th. The first time this song was played (9/17/01) was a Monday, leading me to believe he wrote it the night before in one shot. Thus the line "The kind of clarity that only comes to me on Sunday's shine". He is saying that he thought about it all week and finally Sunday he realized that "Everything is Not Broken". Most likely the impetus from Covered in Rain which gets its melody from an old beat box/guitar riff John and Scotty Crowe used to do in the summer of 2001.
Ive played the Troub a few times... I love seeing this footage knowing what its like to be on that stage, hang on the couch upstairs, and load out through the alley ... Its a religious experience to play there... Im sure emotions were high this night being only a month after 9/11
This is just great! Thank you so much for uploading this material. Really deep and clean. Fresh Mayer. This is the kind of video that any fan from any musician would love.
This Performance is Awesome. He's always been extremely Good as a improvisational Guitarist Even as early as in 2001 but this Performance is even way better than some of his Later shows.
I really don't understand Mayer's recent albums. Just mellow and slow song after mellow and slow song. I was hoping he'd be influenced by the dead and do some solid grooves/jams. He does that here, great video. Bring it back man!
Agree with Brandon, it's so cool to see John playing such a good quality live show from 2001. His guitar playing is so on point (even while kicking off his career with the pop songs as usual). All in all this is dope, thanks for the upload!!! One last thing, what song does he play at 12:20 and on for a bit. Every little thing she does is magic by the police, sounds SO much like edge of desire haha how crazy is that.
Realizing he used to play uptempo so much back then. Today, he plays slower lets chords ring out more. He really had that eager young gun energy on the rise up.
@@jameshughes6156 ehm i'm a big fan of John but i'm a guitarist and i know Steve Vai,Joe Bonamassa,Steve Howe,Michael Edges,Pat Metini,Pino Daniele,Jimy Hendrix,SRV and each others. Don't judge a book from the cover
The only video I've ever seen of this song! I cannot thank you enough. This is seriously the greatest video I've ever seen!

David Lightman5 I have just uploaded for the first time a Mayer concert from a few fays before this one, September 20th @ the TLA, where he also performs 'Everything is not Broken' & other beauties. Thanks for releasing your tape! It made me go back and search for the now liberated gem (you can check it out on my channel). Cheers!
Música Desde El Cono Sur Very cool man! Just took a look and the quality is really awesome! Link for anyone who'd like to check it out: ruclips.net/video/bboF5V9vsTY/видео.html
Uros Ogrizovic Found it: johnmayer.yuku.com/topic/1369/UPDATED-JOHNS-GEAR-LIST-FROM-JOHN-HIMSELF?page=1#.VadJEaRViko In the first post. Apparently he gave the guitar to Buddy Guy... gotta love stories like this
Jay Berlin Video Files. I have the master Mini-DV tapes it was filmed on. This is the first time it was taken off those tapes and "converted" to another watchable format. (In other words it wasn't something in circulation).
Matt Mangano, him and John are great friends. I'm sure he loved playing for huge crowds. But I know what you mean. I guess you just have to have the mindset of letting someone else take the spotlight and you supporting their playing
@@guitaristshawnThis. I play in bands and it’s truly a team effort. If you’re just the guitarist or “just the drummer” you have to let everything even out and let the frontman shine! it’s just how it goes. anybody can spot a band member being extra and throwing it off just to “stick out” and that just ruins the show for everybody basically = ego should not exist in band mentality!
I thought he was kinda weak too, but he lays it down pretty well in the jam section of Neon. He has a pretty good solo in there. I think more than anything its drum sound, its really boxy
Would have killed to see him back in this period.
Paul Ell yes
13:09 sounds like the guitar solo in Covered in Rain.. he had this then too. What a talent then, and now.
Well Covered in rain is the "sequal" to city love :) Probably had similar thoughts. good catch
Love it

This one and the show from the TLA in Philadelphia in ‘01 are both very special. Love hearing him play Lenny. 💙
Love how the drummer's mouth goes "bop" when he hits his snare. Haha good stuff.
Hey, 2001 John Mayer, just so you know, you end up in a band comprised of the former members of the Dead and two other wicked musicians... I know, you didn't see that coming.
I think he is yet to have that brain. He is still this showboating bluesman, and not interested yet with the dead
He knew that very well
I was proudly there! I remember getting a haircut on sunset blvd before and telling my hairdresser about him. They had never heard of him.
It’s funny that people back in 2001 knew John so well they knew his stories leadin up to each song
So many gems. Finally a video of him playing The Wind Cries Mary. After all, everything is not lost.

Always bound for stardom... can’t keep that talent down. 🔥
This is gold. Thanks for uploading!
HOW HAVE I NEVER SEEN THIS!?!!! WOW EPIC
This is like one month after Columbia re-release of Room for Squares. You can definitely feel the level of excitement and confidence he has as he is kicking off as an official mega label signed artist!!
Awesome to see the young John!

Ah yeah I watched that one years ago but forgot about it. Will watch it again thanks you ;)
I was expecting it to just be audio. My shock when the video came on. So good!!! Thankyou!
His solo for "your body is a wonderland" turns into miles davis' solo on "so what" at 36:16. A gem for all my jazz cats out there.
Only if the bass player was hip to it he would've played the so what baseline. Jesus John hire me baby
nice catch
Somewhere across the world I was born on this day, crazy to think I am now a huge fan of him watching this now

That ode to Hendrix, at about 43 min.s in was jaw-dropping.
Even Hendrix's jaw would have dropped on hearing that.
My first show at The Troubadour, crazy to think, love the sound in that room!
Thank you very much, sir. First time i actually see a video of him playng The Wind Cries Mary.
This is a hidden gem
Dude..You Rock .!! thank you
This is great, thanks!
Amazing! Thank you!
Thank you so very much!
Thanks for sharing! This is great!
Thanks for sharing!!!!!
Thank you so much. Honestly, this rocks.
I'm thankful for this right here. Hey, 55:34 is We Never Change by Coldplay.
Nice catch
Its badass to see this at his start
I really don't understand Mayer's recent albums. Just mellow and slow song after mellow and slow song. I was hoping he'd be influenced by the dead and do some solid grooves/jams. He does that here, great video. Bring it back man!
damn. JM using a regular major chord now and then. unheard of.
not all superheroes wear capes, david lightman5 is one of them
Love the video thanks for sharing

Really on point! Having trouble spotting an error at all. Jealous of whoever got to be at Troubadour that night..
People understand how difficult his early music actually is to play. And then to sing bruh😩
I only recognise the bass player in the band..never seen him play with that drummer/guitarist before! Cool
Conor Barry 3 yrs later. That was his original guitarist. Can’t remember his name or why he left.

DiegoManning falou tudo
acho que é por que ele criou seu próprio timbre, agente br sempre ta tentando conseguir o timbre dos caras kkkkkk é froyd
I KNEW this set was going to start with “Back to You”!
The day after this would've been my very first birthday. Absolutely insane to even think about.
13:47 Slow Dancing solo lick? 👀 guess he already had that one in the bag waiting to use in a song
SRV Lick hahaha
thank you
Who’s the drummer for this show?
Love it ! he is hilarious
Realizing he used to play uptempo so much back then. Today, he plays slower lets chords ring out more. He really had that eager young gun energy on the rise up.
ChesterCopperpot5 has a channel with a ton of other artists? Why did I just find this out now?! Thanks Jason.
wow john mayer tuning a guitar!
21:03 Just Brillant!
Please upload these to archive.org for other archiving.
Amazing old footage! Are these the same guys who played on the studio Room For Squares?
wicked version of Lenny.
41:24 he's covering Lenny by SRV... but nobody seems to know the song lol
Julien Prégent because most of his fans don’t know any other guitarists.
@@jameshughes6156 ehm i'm a big fan of John but i'm a guitarist and i know Steve Vai,Joe Bonamassa,Steve Howe,Michael Edges,Pat Metini,Pino Daniele,Jimy Hendrix,SRV and each others. Don't judge a book from the cover
w a v e he said most of his fans and no one is judging anyone
Julien Prégent it’s also weird how they don’t know SRV but they cheer when he starts playing Jimi
So weird how David LaBruyere kind of looks like Zane Carney a bit, seems like dejavu
I love watching this. The guys on stage are working at Amazon saying DOOD I played with John Mayer no I’m serious man.
13:09
Aahhhhh
E eu ja entro em loucura !!!!

Im spiritually the guy yelling sucker at 50:49
nice....
Whatever happened to DeLa? (David Labruyere)
Rare footage of a brand new Black1 lol
Huge John fan but his voice is off key in many of these songs. He’s come A LONG WAY, Baby!,
what model strat is he playing here? it sounds so good
Fender Stratocaster Custom Shop 1962 Hardtail RW Lake Placid Blue
Eugenio Celeste thanks! how did you find that out?
Edward White I've read it on a forum about john's guitars and gear
Uros Ogrizovic Found it:

In the first post. Apparently he gave the guitar to Buddy Guy... gotta love stories like this
"yea John!" lol
Here i am
tuning his own guitars...notes someday he'll have a guitar tech...
the song in min 41 is Lenny
What did you mean by first time converted David Lightman5? Is this a reference to religion or video files?
Jay Berlin Video Files. I have the master Mini-DV tapes it was filmed on. This is the first time it was taken off those tapes and "converted" to another watchable format. (In other words it wasn't something in circulation).
Very cool. Thank you.
life of the party and she swears that she's artsy
Hot drummer
What kind amp john used in this video?
Vibro King
End of city love kind of sounds like edge of desire
27:48
41:24 is lenny
What's the music at 11:46?
Setlist is in the desciption. It's a cover of "Every Little Thing She Does is Magic" by The Police (Sting) - ruclips.net/video/aENX1Sf3fgQ/видео.html
Thank you, I'm sorry for that
What the name of first song
Whos the drummer with the claim to fame
Would hate to be the other guitar player.... JM just too fuckin good
+Kimba C I'd love it dude, I think just getting to jam with this dude once would elevate anyone's playing level.

Could be a Fender Vibro-King by the looks of it.
