I've failed to Everest every single day for going on 50 years - you eventually get used to it.
I'm working on the Mt Baldy Challenge...4100 feet :)
This is the right attitude.
@@WiltKishimoto Mount Everest is 29032 ft, so you need to repeat Mt Baldy challenge 7 times to match the Everest level. LOL
@@Reanimator999 and now you see why I would rather do my Mt Baldy challenge ;)
It's inspiring to me that you keep sharing your DNE's when many people wouldn't. Good luck for the next one :)
did not everest?
@@olleborner4604 Yup!
agreed!
i had a failed everest attempt yesterday, made it 400m far
You beat me
I fail to attempt an everest everyday. Some days I'm 8700m shy of it, other days I'm 8800m short of an everest.
On positive side, you did 4% of Everesting. LOL
You need a giant half pipe at the bottom. In that way you wouldn't need to break from 55mph to zero but you could use your momentum for the next climb.
also swap to a DH bike at the top and back to climbing bike after the down ramp ;)
I can see Phil pulling a big old flare out of the pipe and then right back up.
It is unfortunately not allowed...
What about a pair of hills that are both really steep and virtually no valley between them.
@Alfred Olsen it ain't
Great video. Thanks for sharing. Especially your failures, and the explanations of what went wrong.
Love the struggle thanks for sharing makes us feel better for our efforts.
Love your analysis and honesty on what might have gone, keep rolling!
Keep at it, Phil! Love that you’re trying. And thanks for sharing your entire journey
Looking forward to it happening. Appreciate the honesty, reflection and the charity work. Good on ya.
That's a whole lot of "vegan excuses" 🤣🤣
Still better than flying to Florida to race during a pandemic, I suppose.
@@gamby16a LOL
Trying is always a víctory; good sense of humor and not taking it too seriously is what I like about you.. Keep going please, your stories and vlogs (and books!) always leave me feeling good! Hills in South of Barcelona are awaiting!
I wouldn't overthink it. You just had an off day. I'd give my right leg to perform like you do on your worst day.
I'd be interested to see a study of how Whoop scores subconsciously affect performance. I know in my case I really have to tell my brain to shut up and not use bad/moderate scores as an excuse to bail or take an easier workout that day. Keep it up Phil!
Good question. Especially since the Woop data isn’t all that good.
And who said a variable heart rhythm is all it's cracked up to be. How extensive is this research? I agree 100% about the psychosomatic effects on your expectations. Believe me Doctors can sound so so intelligent and in the know; it is intimidating. I'll bet they could even convince you that a cigarette could clear your chest...oh wait ...this did happen
Class video, the way you talk and handle disappointments makes me root for you more, good luck!
The process is almost even more in lightning than the actual goal man. Keep following the Everesting quest and sharing 💪🏽💪🏽. I am not sure my joke about loving the process more than the outcome (baking the cookies but not eating them is fair) all the cookies to you sir 👍🏻
Thanks for sharing the process. Very interesting.
As many are doing now Phil, if this is your focus and goal keep at it! Seems harder these days than ever before. Your struggle is sure interesting, thanks for letting us in.
It’s great training. You are getting to know your body even more. Keep at it, it will be your record soon. 👌👏👏
its really nice to see these phil. as someone who misses more than they hit its comforting to see the “pros” struggle as well
It's nice to see you failing this recored! Not because we want you to fail but because everyone only shows a straight line to success and there goals! Your going to get this recored and when you do at least you've got a better story to tell then if you did it on your first attempt! Good luck and look forward to the recored video!
There’s just something about this hill that isn’t working for you. So technical and so much logistics involved...it’s a whole production! Maybe that’s adding more pressure and taking all of the fun out of it. This one feels like such a chore for you whereas the other attempts seemed like you were enjoying it more. I say just chase some KOMs until you can travel to a better location. ⛰ Either way, I love the Everesting News Network! 😁
And wow! So powerful at the end you put into perspective what real suffering is. "That's a bingo." I will donate NOW
Keep chipping away dude it will come. Entertaining as always! Keep safe. 👍
Ditch that whoop. It plays with your brain. Keep it up! It's great to see the process!
Exactly. Was feeling low because of your Woop score or was your Woop score down because you felt low?
Or he might have gotten COVID recently. Whoop can predict 20% of pre-symptomatic cases and 80% of symptomatic cases of COVID. It's real technology with scientific backing, so i'd be inclined to trust the data.
@@scobrackc Even if Woop is accurate, one can't overlook a placebo effect in this instance. The mind and the body are not separate.
Keep pushing, you will do it!
It was a great effort again. It is good that you recognised that from the waking up moment you didn't have the right feeling... and more importantly that you mighty need a proper break. I will say that the next attempt before a proper bike break you should just do it all no matter the record. Looking forward for the next attempt.
Sometimes the most satisfying achievements are the moon shots that you failed at a few times before nailing it. I just tell myself "trust the process" even when it includes failed attempts. Keep at it brother!
Good plan Phil. Give it another try, no pressure. Then you are done with that hill. I doubt your friends and support people feel they are wasting their time. I'm sure they feel good about being part of your adventure. And all for a great cause! Love your work and good luck!
As someone who lives in a mountain town and never encounters car traffic...at all...watching you ride and film while being passed by all those cars is...terrifying.
I'm in SF and it's not that bad once you learn to read traffic well. Drivers in big cities are used to sharing the roads with cyclists and usually are pretty good. Of course, there are exceptions where some drivers are just having a bad day or something. The key is to be predictable and be seen. Daytime running lights are great. I've noticed a huge difference after adding them to my rides.
I was thinking the same thing! Living in Boston... absolutely no way I'm riding a three-lane road. Bike into the trunk, middle lane and hope for the best!
Phil,s riding on Ventura blvd...... very brave
@@davidb224 I know, it seems like I read a news article about a cyclist being killed in Boston a couple times a year. I rode through Dorchester/Mattapan once. Never again.
Another amazing effort Phil, you will smash this record soon.
I think you're the one person we all have faith in to smash this record and keep it. Keep going Phil!
Good luck Phil, you’ll smash it on the right day. 👍
Halferesting efforts ON POINT tho 💪💪
Damn, rough to watch. I'm a bit late here, but I appreciate you sharing. I'm chronicling my attempt at a Double Everesting run in summer 2023. It's good to see others going for it. (And maybe especially good to see those pulling out.) It's good for me to remain humble in the face of the challenge. Thanks for sharing. Cheers!
Dang. We believe in you Phil!
Heh Phil, I’m a fellow Whoop disciple too and I have to say that when I get one of those days, like this one of yours, it’s usually the case that I chose to Interpret my Whoop score to suit my arrangements and not to heed its advice. Love you man. If anyone deserves this record you do. Wishing you a better day and more cookie power on your next attempt!
You can do it. It is inevitable that you will take the record. Cheers!!
Keep with it Phil , third times a charm I believe in you!
All good bro!! get that rest in!
9:35 - I got passed close today on my way back from work, going through a quiet residential area. And of course its a G Wagon trying to go like 40mph around a blind corner.
I keep track of my HRV score, I remember the first bad score and I wanted to ride. Well I learned my body was not kidding, it wanted rest. It happens. Keep going for it!
6:34 - Woodland Hills, Ventura Blvd westbound, approaching Topanga Canyon Blvd. My former turf, where my riding obsession began.
I feel sorry for you. You put a lot in and I wish you would succeed. I guess sometimes it's just not meant to be.
I wonder if it would be easier on the mind to do bigger climb less often.
And I am sure the mental part is huge in everesting.
Hope you will beat the record this year!!
I think the downhill is too technical. But I'm arm chair quarterbacking here.... We are all pulling for you, Phil! Nice tour of Ventura Blvd, btw...
You got this Phil! Up Up Up Up!!!
Come down to Laguna and get a couple KOMs on some really steep hills!! Nyes is %20 on the straight section
Respect. I do like your bike setup.
Well done Phil, not an easy attemp. You'll get it one day!!!
Short climbs, your muscles are switching on and off too many times. A longer climb would allow you to get into a rhythm for longer and give you a longer break in between intervals.
all these set backs will just make it all the sweeter in the end!
and hey, your failure got me to donate to some hungry kids, so not really even a failure! ;)
Rode Latigo on Saturday, parked on Trancas Cyn and checked out your Everesting hill Damn that's steep 64 times steep, I got up to where Velofix parked their van
Mt Lemmon in Tucson? We've had amazing weather so far this winter. Might already be getting a tad warm though. I really enjoy your videos.
Not steep enough. He also needs cool overcast days not sunshine. The dude is overtrained. You cant smash your body like this every few weeks.
@@patrickharrison871 what do you mean not steep enough? He is trying to get the kom not Everest it.
lol Phil just riding down Ventura with his cam on and not getting hit is just top tier haha. Surprised he doesn’t have the mini climb on Ventura between Winnetka and Canoga.
Keep strong 💪
To be fair this is one of the hardest feats of endurance, so failing many times and finding it challenging seems very acceptable.
I've done that Ventura ride a few times but always super early without so much valley-driver action to deal with.
I was a bit befuddled after your first Everest attempt, in the heat on this hill, when your coach explained you were ready to try again fairly soon. That feigned optimism to me. Peaking that close together is rare. But dude, you have the best cycling content on the net, especially for us New Englanders who have snow, salt and bitter cold to deal with right now. Keep going!
Thank you!
Great idea, a roller coaster type set of hills would work really well
Everesting rules say one hill only, done up and down same side.
Has casual conversation with camera going faster than I ever will on a bike. Breath normal. Beast
Keep Climbing!
Hey leave Lionel alone!! Lol!! Love watching you both. Very inspirational the both of you.
If it means another Talbot video of Lionel challenging the KOM again I'm all for it!
Phil you got this bro!! I think perhaps you are putting a bit too much pressure on yourself and it’s maybe becoming not so enjoyable. Maybe for the next go pick a range of dates and each morning assess what is the best for you. Also, in my 14 years of competing as a swimmer, I have to say my tapers into Nationals and other key meets took 2 weeks. Started off high intensity longer distances, pulled back intensity but distance still up. At this point I would feel terrible. Then distance down, but short intensities up. Eventually would start to feel amazing and firing on all cylinders. Cheering for you man. Good luck 👌
but hey, it will feel extraordinarily amazing once you finally get it man!
Third time lucky 👍👍👍. Love your shades, what make are they.
It is way too cold in Virginia right now to try Sean Gardner's hill. You need to wait at least until April.
Keep the faith bro.. Surely its your thing to take it back on his hill tho go get it dude
I say try it again never look back to whatever happened just do it again.
👍. We love your videos bro
I find that riding my 1970 Triumph Tiger dramatically improves my times when "Everesting" compared to my 2018 Hampsten Titanium "Il Mostro" model bike. I am able to comfortably get KOM's on the Triumph but really struggle on the Hampsten, especially if the pitches exceed 10%.
I’m not a coach but I was doing a little ride over the weekend I was thinking all those long hilly rides have to take a toll on your body. I’ll say take a few more days to recover. Listen to your body.
Keep going Phil...you're the man. If your legs are really bothering you....the next time you're at @10:13, just take a left
Nothing like riding on Ventura Blvd :)
Maybe go back to the hill you got Everesting record on? Going straight downhill with a longer recover time, seems like you nailed the issue. Going for the record these days, every small detail now is + or - and magnified on times, good luck on the next one Phil.
If you come to Virginia to attempt the Everesting record on Tanners Ridge I could help provide support. I live nearby and have done the Tanners Ridge to Skyline Drive climb several times. That steep stretch where Sean set the record is hard to do one time. It would be impressive to see someone do it dozens of times.
Have you had your Iron and B12 levels checked recently? I had some exercise induced anemia recently and found out even though I thought I was taking enough Iron, I was also ingesting things that block absorbsion like tea, and not ingesting enough vitamin c, that aids in Iron uptake. Anyways Love the videos and good luck on the next attempt!!
While I applaud Phil for Everesting time record, but other mountain-height climbing challenges would be nice.
On continental level, there is Mt. McKinley (6190m) for North America, Mt. Aconcagua (6962m) for South America, Puncak Jaya (4884m) for Oceania, Mt Kilimanjaro (5895m) for Africa, and Mt. Elbrus (5642m) for Europe.
Hope you get it next time! BTW that road you were riding on looked very dangerous and unpleasant! Hope you are not suffering from LA burnout.
dont worry about it .. no matter what the training/tapering etc, some days the body just says no! does with me anyways.
Good luck for the next one keep your head up never a fail just another way not to do it smash it next time
Dude ! just moved the hq to Tucson ! come down and I’ll support you 🍋 ! 👍🏻 70F everyday ☀️
That´s Show Bizz!
Phil takes "go hard or go home" seriously. There's no point trying if he's not going to get the record.
Phil you may not like, but for us it is more entertaining the more times you fail in public. Important life lessons about perseverance that you gain by very hard efforts and we gain by watching youtube videos...
Find the best you. Do it once and keep it!
3:46
Im torn between which two comments to make here:
"Why did the camera man film this like Girls Gone Wild?"
or
*Throws beads on screen*
Phil I dont recall if you mentioned consideration for wind direction and speed in your attempt? It can potentially play an enormous role on climb times at the same power over a sustained period. I just don't remember you mentioned it before (maybe I missed it?).
Edge of the envelope is ragged place. You’ll get this.
those vans - matching the socks -- sweetness
Yeah, where can we get some of those sweet ass Vans?
go Phil!
Phil, have you ever looked at your data to determine what percent grade you climb most efficiently? (measured as feet climbed per minute) I would think if things get to steep, if might be counter productive to your Everesting goal
I often do hard rides to work mostly long intervals or pulsing and relaxing 50 to 100 watts above my FTP, but then I sometimes have so many days off that I feel like I should be withering away. Then I get on my bike and I feel wonderful, bursting with energy and strength. I often repeat this and still feel very strong. I then begin the question the logic of pushing every day with only a couple of days off. I wonder sometimes if maintaining and extending the inflammatory process after a hard session (i.e. by not doing long warm down rides every other day) causes the necessary adaptations within your muscles (toxic stimulus = good) I think warm down rides are necessary if you need to go flat out again for the next race but is not improving you. It's all guesswork with limited practice from the comfy chair.
This video is amazing. Where is your camera?!
I had an Everesting month. I climbed over 29,000 feet total in September 2019. Does that count as anything?
I was trying to pay attention to your narration, but I kept getting distracted by all my old neighborhood spots you were riding past on Ventura
you gotta get that rocket downhill course that one guy had...oh you actually say that at 6:47- I think you can do it there with that downhill
20 hours a week 💪💪💪 Does sound like you need a well deserved break though after your next attempt 🏔🚴🏼♂️
Cool video quality
Phil, I don't know anything about training other than watching some trainer road and Dylan Johnson YT videos, but not having breaks longer than 1 day at a time in over 18 months doesn't sound right.
Unlucky, hopefully you make the 3rd attempt, 3rd times the charm
wooooooo get it phil
Casually one handed cycle down the craziest street to ride on like a champ.
