I wish I could trust could trust anything like Phil trusted his breaks. holy moly.
Ha ha ya
Yeah, I was expecting disc brakes. Carbon wheels with rim brakes... cajones
@@ryanmonaghan3733 I wonder if a front disc would be worth adding? It wouldn't weigh all that much more, but I guess Phil would know if he needs it.
Yes, this. That brake squeal deep into the turnaround was making me pucker.
Rim brakes for the win!
Appreciate the temps in Celsius
yess! :D and meters instead of feet as well
if you are watching this...you already have the technology to convert F to C ... Took me 10 seconds on my phone
@@prowrench7989 Instead of possibly thousands pausing the video to look up those silly feets and Fahrenheits it's a small and much appreciated effort to put that in the video.
@@stoempert true but hes american, and I'm assuming most of his audience is too. I'm Bristish so I've got to convert too but it's not that hard
Oh wow really? That what you want to do while watching every yt video right, genius! :*
This is a reminder to myself. During the pandemic, few things gave me more joy than following Phil Gaimon's Everesting. Thank you for taking us with you, Phil!
100% agree. Read all of his books in 2020, sub'd his channel and feel like I have been along for the journey haha.
I enjoyed it too.
After so many laps here , the segment should be renamed Phil's Hill and not just on Strava but even by the city.
He got the local legend for sure
f*ck me that 90 kph decent looks hairy... let alone doing it 60-something times and seeing double after hour six... brave man.
Let's not forget rim brakes+carbon wheels
My palms were sweating as I watched.
@@e46t yes, also! 😬
@@e46t those are probably carbon tubular, which isn't as dangerous as carbon clincher
@@e46t people don't understand that it's the tyres that are the deciding factor regards braking, your ability to slow/stop?
This notion that discs improve braking is just BS, a marketing mans wet dream as to how gullible people are, then they go on to state falsely that xx (it can refer to almost anything) is better because it's purchase justification. Discs/supposed improvement tech lull riders and most drivers into making more errors in judgment, reduced thinking time believing they can brake later or from a higher speed.
We see no change in crashes in the pro ranks with discs, Ineos seem to have no problem braking in the wet with carbon rims on the steep descents, how many times have we seen riders wipe out with disc braked bikes because the tyres let go, hundreds.
7:21 "I dont need any signals, apart from HOLY LIVING F&£K EVERYTHING IS BAD"
We call this the "Team America panic signal"
Hahaha 🤣
"If I accomplished all my goals, what would I do tomorrow?" First class.
That descent seems pretty intense to ride after 6 hours :/ Congrats on the upload, very appreciated.
His team should have advised him to postpone with those temperatures. No endurance world record has *ever* been set at those type of temperatures, its just far too warm. For instance there will *never* be a marathon world record set when its 75f I can tell you that.
That descent is terrifying! 😥
Epic Effort! Maybe you could pick up a lens wipe sponsor for the next attempt.
😂I was thinking the same thing
Cameraman was sweating onto the lens watching him do the descents
Apparently there’s research to suggest an ideal temperature for endurance is about 10C so banging around at 30C is properly impressive! I’d be interested in future videos to hear a bit about how you’ve decided on what time of day to ride at in terms of the conditions. Great content as always! 🙂🚲👍🏼
Phil, you appeared amazingly relaxed and I'd even say: "fresh" after that 4 ½ hour effort. That in itself is crazy impressive! Stunning effort and a great crew to assist the effort. Maybe Factor can build you a fork that would support twin discs on the front? Those descents.... yikes!
Record-holder Sean Gardner:
“While I do well in the middle of the summer, I do think that I would not have broken the record had it been in the 80s [degrees Fahrenheit]. The high on the day was 60 and most of the day was in the 50s. That kept my core cool and also reduced my need for liquids.”
Yep. 50s on climb is ideal. Plus going up the real Mt. Everest would not be hot.
LOL. your pacing is my going full tilt and die in 10 minutes!
I wish I could do that for 10 minutes.
Right? I can maybe last 5 minutes at that pace. Crazy effort.
For me it really depends on if where talking his pace in watts or watts/kg. The first one is close to my FTP. The Second one I can only do for 3 minutes.
@@fignons_missing_8sec4 Well yeah. Maybe it's just me, but I always convert
I have a ftp of 315 little more than 5w/kg but man, this is insane what he is doing!
I'll be disappointed if there are no more dogs wrestling or bumping into the camera.
Thank you for being SAFE and doing it right. Can't wait to see the full attempt.
Glad you put this up. You've got this, dude!
It's amazing how easy you make world record pace look. Incredible effort Phil
edge of my seat the entire time!
Ya gotta know when to pull the plug and listen to your body, nice effort!
glad you shared this!! looking forward to the bike check!!
Absolutely amazing effort!!
Your adventures inspire me to keep pushing, Phil. Thank you for working so hard for our entertainment and for sharing all of this with us.
Great effort, look forward to you nailing it. Also appreciate you’re openness and honesty.
Glad you shared this video! Love the sponsors and your friends for helping make all of this happen.
Couldn’t agree more with your approach to the video, man. Congrats on the attempt and like you said: great training day. You’ll get it - I think all of us here are rooting for you and believe it’ll happen. And I too think it’s more entertaining to witness the complete journey and not just the wins.
Thank you for your effort Phil!! Best Channel on RUclips. You have got this! Full confidence in you.
This new attempt is very inspiring. The call to end it before reaching your goal was a huge one and I admire you greatly. I had a similar experience on Alpe D' huez with 40C. Your inner voice to survive on your own and addept to train instead of pushing yourself in danger is the best example i've seen in a long time. Greetings from Holland.
Absolutely SICK effort. Thanks Phil
Love you Phil! Thank you for being my cycling hero, that's if 42 year olds can have hero's !
The view is beautiful!!
Well done Phil, great stuff!!
Amazing effort and great video Phil and can't wait for you to take the record back again!
thanks for sharing that. Sending continued best wishes for the next one.
That’s was so tense to watch....... loved it!!
Legendary effort Phil, well done.
You are Amazing, the inspration im getting here in icy Sweden is all I need before spring arrive. Thank You!
Epic effort Phil, great video. I think you've got this with the appropriate weather. Good luck for the next attempt.
Thanks for sharing, Phil ! Awesome!
We always learn more from defeat, keep it going Phil. Thanks for sharing it all.
The fact that you will share a long video documenting a failed attempt is one of the prime reasons this is a great channel. Thanks for what you do!
Why’d you spoil it
@@Dennis4523 sorry man! I never read the comments before I watch something... Can't wait for his successful attempt!
Phil you are an absolute legend, thanks for inspiring us and motivating us to keep doing better!
Epic effort Phil!
Great effort, its great to see stuff like this as it proves its not easy at all!
As your latest headline sponsor would say, ‘Chapeau’
thanks Phil, for the commitment, for the effort and for the sharing of everything.....good luck(and judgement) for the next try.
Thanks for sharing the unsuccessful attempt. You're right that it makes the channel (and life) more interesting. Will be cheering on your next effort 💪
Awesome. Keep making videos. Your stories have a great balance of anticipation of results and reality of the pain involved in achieving those results, which we cyclists and most all athletes, love.
Great ride, keep the videos comin' Phil, your the best and so is your crew!!!
Thanks for the inspiration and the help
That descent looks so dangerous! Glad this was not a posthumous video. 👏👏👏
I'm watching as I type this. At 14:24, and I'm barely breathing. Regardless of the outcome I'll see soon, this is a heroic effort from Phil. Awesome, in the most literal sense of the word!
That descent is so gnarly. My palms were sweating watching that. You are far from a normal human.
Support crew did a great job, too.
Phenomenal footage and video. I like how stark it is without music.
Creature still totally unimpressed. 😃
Incredible effort and organization!!!
Glad you shared this one! What a team effort for your attempt.
Hey very inspiring video. Thanks for posting it all. Ready for the next one
Go Phil! Thanks for making these videos.
Great work Phil, legend 🤛🏻
Chapeau Phil - looked strong and smooth! Onwards and...... oh, upwards!!
A riveting attempt, glad I didn’t skip ahead!
Nice work with this attempt! Good luck on the next one!
Great video. Those descents, sounds like a jetliner flyby.
Great effort and great team.
Smashed it, Phil! Great video.
Great Video and lots of respect!
Perfect content! It's always ups and downs
A+ for effort. You’re awesome Phil. You can do it!!
Thank you for showing several very important things with this video: Training is important, taking care of yourself is important, and sometimes goals are so hard we have to retry before we succeed
Epic effort!
The last thing a pro loses is the ability to descend fast. "Terrifyingly impressive!"
Chapeau for the effort Phil. With better conditions you’ll get the record back for sure. If you time it right so the pro season is just kicking off you’ll get to keep it as well!
Great effort, great vid 👍
Love it. Awesome Phil. Keep up the good work.
Good effort man! Looking forward to round 3. 😁
Well done Phil 👌👌 loving the vids
Awesome effort. Wise choice. Thanks for posting!
Auto generated subs be:
Brake howl : Music
Tyre noise: Applause
Not wrong really.
Phil very inspiring brother. I love that you are sharing regardless of the result. It’s interesting how failure is often if not always the pathway to championship and greatness.
Amazing feet man well done and love the humor as well. Thanks for helping to make cycling more fun while pushing us to dig a little deeper.
Great vídeo and what an effort!!!. I wish I could hold that power for some minutes.
Good job Phil and team!
Thank you, Phil, for including us in your attempt. Your decision to stop makes perfect sense.
Way to go!! Great job
Kudos man. Crap that the weather sabotaged this attempt but looking forward to the next one - its gonna happen. The braking zone was scary looking!
Awesome job!
Smart call. Those climbs in those temps are no joke. I had my worst ever ride experience on Decker Rd, a few clicks further up PCH. I finished the bulk of the climb, then began feeling dizzy, with my chest pounding and vision narrowing. I stopped and straddled my bike with my head resting on the handlebars for some 15 minutes, slowly breathing in and out, wondering if I just had a heart attack. I was afraid to dismount, fearing I wouldn't be able to get back on.
Great video Phil.👍
Great effort Phil!
Great video 💪🏻
PHIL! PHIL! PHIL! Chapeau, for the effort, ideal prep. for record attempt, no matter what we support who you are and what you do! Chapeau!
Looking forward to your next attempt, you got this.
Outstanding effort. You were flying. I think it was a good decision on your part. Thanks for the video and take care, Al
Will keep watching you and your rediculous challenges. Cant imagine keeping that pace up for more than 10 minues. I hope you dont put yourself through to much mentally the physical challenge is tough enough!
What a random heat wave we had in L.A. that weekend.
Still a fabulous effort Phil, fingers crossed that the weather doesn’t mess with you folks next time...onward!!!
Good stuff Phil!
Great video. Loved it. Can’t wait to follow you prepare for the next attempt. 🍪
You are awesome and tough as anyone could be! Keep it up. You´ll get there!
Great job. Good call. Love the vid.
Great vid!
excellent video! thx
