I was really looking forward to this video, and seeing how your ride on the Baked Potato course went. I saw you zoom by on the Saturday shakeout ride, going up Trail Creek, and then again on the Wildhorse Canyon loop section - pretty awesome to see how fast you were going in person, even while filming! I was too shy to say hello, oof. Next time. This was my first bike race/event, and my first century, and I’m hoping you had as much fun riding bikes in my home state as I did! Cheers Phil!

I like to see people crushing these courses, but what was once an incredibly hard race that could be won by an amateur or domestic pro, is now just an endurance ride/fondo for basically anyone that isn't a current or former World Tour Pro. As a native Kansan, I used to want to race it if I won the "lottery". Now, I don't really see the point in even riding it. I can ride all the Kansas gravel I want, any day I want. $200+ to crush myself and be pack fodder in my own "backyard"? Why?
yeah, I recently rode a long distance gravel thing and it was nice talking to people along the way, but with no chances at the podium, it was simply pretty crowded - might be better to do such routes on another day.

I like this approach. I raced/rode DK 200 in 2019, but last year just went out day before, camped, rode the 2017 100 route solo on race day. Partied at finish and watched to 200 mile riders roll in. Think I actually had more fun doing this than I did racing the actual event...

I like your vibe here, Phil, just showing up and being a friendly celebrity roadie on dirt and enjoying the day. And sure, the retired pros gunning for glory on gravel has its place, but I'm not sure that place has been dialed yet. It seems a bit cheesy to pound everyone else into submission in what is akin to an all-day music festival under the banner of peace and love and bikes and dirt. I'm all for racing and long gravel roads seem epic for it, just that it seems to be maybe bandwagon jumping or something, like dirt ain't the best but O well, it pays. And that Coke question had to be a joke, no? Hopefully, anyway, but it could be an emerging trend among gravel riders, soda snobs. Yikes and I grin, respectfully suggesting that everyone drink RC Cola when they need something refreshing under the cover of smoke.
