- Before Velofix converted Phil's O2 VAM out of Everesting mode, he decided to take advantage, tackling Eldred St--the steepest in Los Angeles and one of the steepest in the United States with Emily and friends Michael Muhney and Jesse Stewart.

Can confirm that my "3rd place" effort was me bailing before the top yet still being awarded the segment. Flagging myself ASAP!
Haha I appreciate your honestly
@@worstretirementever Hey Phil, your title's wrong. Fargo St is steeper than Eldred. 34%.
Damn dude, how is your heart rate so low? 😳
The KOM was on an electric bike. These guys are making it hard, Strava should be working on ways to sort that.
Annoys the shit out of me
@Chris Tate too right
If you're sure you can just flag it
@EmbodiedDespair the stats don't add up right. Whatever it was, it wasn't a person on a pedal bike with a legit measuring device(s)
How do you know? Strava's estimated power is...not accurate, to put it lightly. Whoever nabbed that time didn't have a power meter on, but their HRM seems to be telling us it was a hard effort.
I'd like to see the Strava leaderboard after Phil flags all the e-bikes.
Yeah, I might believe he didn't get the KOM, but by that much of a difference, seems odd.
100% flaggable times they are obviously on ebikes or vehicles
@Lord Fauntleroy I respectfully disagree. Lots of people who wouldn't otherwise ride are riding because of ebikes. Especially in hilly areas like mine, where a lot of older, out of shape, or obese people would otherwise not ride one.
Now, if you meant specifically in the context of Strava sector times, yes, people who use ebikes and don't classify their activity as an ebike ride are crappy people.
And I'm sure that's what you meant, but I like to keep the negative talk about ebikes down since I'm seeing a lot of non-cyclists adopting cycling thanks to them and I would hate to stigmatize all ebike use as cheating.
@@rcranes2227 You're right. Especially for commuting to work. Gets cars off the road and hopefully better cycling infrastructure in the future.
As for strava, everyone knows who the ebike wankers are when they appear.
Don't think any of them are E-bikes, if you look at the GPS data, they all bail before the top but it errors out and gives them a segment complete
I can't believe with a moustache like that you're afraid of anything. It's like watching Magnum PI say this Ferrari is too fast.
"If I crash or something that's good content".... I got nothin'.
I immediately glanced over at that cactus looking succulent over his shoulder when he said that.
I hear a cat giving birth, oh wait, that's a small child. As a dad, I completely understand how those two sounds can be confused.
A cat dad?
😂😂😂😂😂😂
This had me cracking up
I hate to be that person but... Cats giving birth are pretty much silent. 😁
I have heard kids playing in my neighborhood and thought I was hearing cats fighting, though.
😂😂😂😂
Think the KOM holder might’ve done that on a motorcycle
yeah 1/3 the watts to go 25% faster. must weigh 3kg
Or a super strong tailwind ;)
he took the downhill time i guess.
@@jakobmathiszig-lee8046 that's estimated wattage, which is often very wrong.
@Lord Fauntleroy Flag the phucker!
HIGHLAND PARK! I've walked up that hill and it's brutal.
700 W for a minute. "Didn't even go hard."
The 400 W KOM is guaranteed an e bike or someone with no arms, torso or head.
@@CBMaster2 I didn't catch that. Odd that it would estimate low. Strava always seems to estimate quite high for me when I ride without my power meter. Like on that hill it would estimate I pushed 1200 W for the minute, when, in fact, I would have passed out half-way.
@@Outsideville Strava routinely estimated my watts about 50-60 lower than it turned out to be with a power meter. Felt like I had been lied to for my whole life.
My 49 second best power is 671 watts. I do weigh like 40lbs more than Phil, though, even though we are the same height.
It seemed pretty clear he "ran out of gears" from the video, around the dirt section.
I feel my heart popping out of my chest just watching this climb.
Brutally steep. The staircase at the top of the street is in one of the hikes in “Secret Stairs”, which is a neat book to explore the historic/hidden staircases in Los Angeles
That’s by the guy that had some kind of back pain, so he started climbing stairs.
I think he still leads tours of the stairs
Nice! I used to test and develop hybrid vehicles on that street/area. Tough on cars, more tough on a body!
I’m so glad you posted this so I can drag my kids to one more crazy LA site!
KOM’s that short are too short to be reliable. I’m impressed you could put out that much power. Me on Canton Ave, Pittsburgh, can do nowhere near max 30 second power on a grade like that.
I found this street 7-8 years ago trimming trees for a customer. Getting dump truck and trailer up there was...... Impossible. This street is Wicked. Needless to say I had to improvise.
I had my baby daughter at the time with me, and we walked up the steps to Cross Street, and I absolutely fell in love. So i bought a lot, and now I'm (still) trying to build a home on a cliff! But the views are awesome.
Go up that backside (Mt. Washington) lots of climbing around there.
Nice!
you don't notice how steep that is from the bottom, and then when Muhney gets to the top..... geez
When I first read the title I thought "oh that sounds like a good Everesting climb. Then I saw Phil's first attempt and thought "ummm, maybe not"
Edit 3: How does T Mo do that so fast at 400w? Stephen L #6 at 295w? Something seems fishy (sorry T Mo and Stephen L)
Clicking into the segments for the others on the leader board you can see that the beginning and end of the measured segment (blue line) vary widely, with some ending way before the top. Phil's is also off a little. There are a couple of versions of the segment, and clicking into them now the times have changed vs. the leaderboard shown in the video. Not sure if it is the fault of Strava or the GPS devices, but the margin of error seems pretty high.
"If I crash, well that's good content" hahaha. Phil you're a class act
Dude used an e-bike. Two-thirds the power but 13 seconds faster?
possible if you only weigh 95lbs
Thanks...Michael is funny , as are you . Be safe .
This was hillarious!! Subscribed!
Very interesting history on the gradient. I've wondered for years why there is no steep roads in America.
Crazy steep! Several years ago, my daughter lived on Narragansett Ave in Ocean Beach (San Diego). It was pretty steep, but not like this. I rode it many times on my Ritchey Break Away.
As someone who lives in Point Loma, I can vouch there are plenty of steepies around. Too bad (or good thing) none of them are 33%. I think the steepest is 25%.
@@matthewnormand2041 I rode through Point Loma many times while riding to Cabrillo Road. Totally enjoyed the quick descent and also the return ride back up Cabrillo Rd. I miss riding that area. My daughter and her family relocated to SLO a few years ago. While visiting we would usually stay at the Mission Bay Hyatt which is a great location to bike from, whether you head north or south.
ITT: 100s of people that were today years old when they learned that Strava estimated power is garbage tier
I've ridden with that T Mo guy, and he IS a beast!
If you’re wondering about the steepness/grade of a climb, it’s helpful to use the “alpine skiing” comparison - if you could make continuous linked turns down said hill in order to control you’re speed, it’s steep! So steep that it can only be climbed efficiently by traversing the slope (zig-zag). Oahu has aeveral hills like this, one is Kamehame Drive, off of Hawaii Kai Drive in East Honolulu. For added suffering you can bypass the gate at the end/top of the road and proceed with caution for another mile or so on a narrower paved path.
... control your* speed (you're = you are)
Super the music at the end :)
I clicked FAST! Also, congrats on passing 100k subs Phil!
“If I crash or something, it’ll make good comment “ -Phil
Thanks for taking one for the team!! 😂 but for real, stay safe!!
Loving your videos! I’ve been mountain biking for a while but and ready to pick up a road bike. Do you have any suggestions for and solid endurance bike under $4k?
probably making more than when you were a pro and more sponsors too , love your vids dude
I thought for the longest time that grade percentage was degrees until I looked it up yesterday lol.
The Mozart sonata is a nice touch.
I wonder if that 36 second KOM is legit. The power difference is suspect.
Wait! The postman won’t climb the hill but, the trash collection will.
Different size trucks/engines
Still missing the F from Factor love it 😂
You almost got hosed! A couple of cars pulling out of driveways, a hungry dog and rain could have made this a more challenging climb ;)
good stuff! If only there was go pro and You tube back in the day! Question for ya, have you heard of Solejar dr or Piccachio st in La Habra heights? you could probably post the KOM times there as I doubt anyone has recorded them? there are a ton of short steep hills all over that area. easy drive down the 60 for some quick videos! Good Luck
... if only there had* been* ...
I think you were closer than you thought. the others were on e-bikes
go to sf. got some real hills there. That's just part one of a 4 or 5 part hill haha. Seattle is no joke as well. I used to messenger in both
"Phil do yo feel like trash?"
"I swear i heard cat giving birth"
"Woa there is small child here"
your friend is comedic gold phil
Phils hyperventilating and his mate jokes 'do you feel like trash' 🤣
I was laughing.
I do interval training on that street. Pretty scary street when you are standing at the top.
Ona bike?!
@@worstretirementever I'm not so much a masochist on a bike. I leave that to you but I run it a long with the slightly "easier" Nolden Steeps (21%) a few miles away.
Lol - i live in the hills above! The neighborhood is called highland park in Los Angeles - the neighborhood above is called Mt Washington.
Try S. Pepperdale Dr. off of Pathfinder Rd in Rowland Heights..
Holy crap dude. I feel like homemade sh*t after watching that. I am really not in shape. Used to be but I would have never made up that with a triple & tacking back & forth. Wow❗I now before you. 👍☮️🌞🌟🚴♂️
No water bottle but you kept your flat kit…just in case? 😁
I would have pulled the bottle cage too.
@@GNiessen I would've pulled the front wheel and fork too. At that gradient it's pretty much just a wheelie the whole way up.
We have attunga st in Sydney. 25% Gradient its 250 m long and very steep.
4th Ave North, Queen Anne Seattle. Google maps used to have a shot of a guy walking his bike up it.
I don’t even think my CAR could get up this climb!!! 🤣
5:40 see a top rider and the incredible fluid movement, like a fish swimming.
The 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th steepest roads in the U.S. are all in LA. Interestingly, SF comes in at 8th and below. Phil - there is a really steep section near the top of Paseo Miramar - I biked it a million times as a kid on my Schwinn.
Canton Ave in Pittsburgh. 37%. Part of Danny Chew's annual ride called the Dirty Dozen that features 13 of the steepest streets in Pittsburgh. To make the list, it starts at 20% and the go up from there. BTW, Canton Avenue is cobbles.
@@russellfinch5493 My front-wheel-drive car was slipping going up Canton. My wife was hyperventilating. I was like, "Yeah, I wanna try this on my bike." She suddenly got real quiet, and I'm pretty sure was trying to decide if I was going slow enough to bail out because I had clearly gone insane.
that is crazy steep. there is a road in white rock bc (Canada) that is steeper...sorry i do not know the grade. the sidewalk has stair bumps so people can walk it. i barely made it up walking. congratulations on just making it up without crashing over the hose on the first try. if the camera dude had regular cycling cleats i think it would be more dangerous to walk down than ride. enjoy your videos. (subscriber here)
Im always scared that these steep climbs have negative impact on the drive-train. Is there any knowledge on it? I feel when doing such high torque effort that the bike is more draggy on the back wheel. Happened to me in my sensa with vision t44 wheels. And i feel it may happen on .y current cannindale supersix with yoeleo wheels (dt swiss 240 hubs)
Or its just in my mind , who knows ? 🙈
Cheers from the Netherlands
Camera man is awesome! He made the whole vid !
Phil, I'm throwing out the invitation to come to Canton Avenue (steepest in US) and ride the Pittsburgh Dirty Dozen.
Phil goes on 30 sth% climbs as I do on 10% xD lol
#3 & #5 with measured power under 500? And #6 & #8 with HR under 160? Those just don't sound plausible.
I just used a power calculator to check. Plugging in Phil's numbers, assuming he was 150 lbs (which I think is a little low) it shows power would be ~690 watts, so in the right ballpark. To hit the KOM of 36 seconds at the same weight you'd have to do over 900 watts. To hit that time at 500 watts you'd have to be under 75 lbs.
not sure you are factoring in the speed you hit the segment at, phil was undergeared
@@yohandsome True, the calculator doesn't take start speed into account. But I've done short climbs at >25% and you're not doing them at 500 watts.
KOM... 400 watts and 13 seconds faster... Hmmmmm 🤔🚴♂️
Electric bike maybe...
Strava needs to put in a logic calculation to all segments, as shown here, it doesnt make sense 🤷♂️
Strava estimated power
The man has an Sworks SL6 with no motor. He just pedals hard AF.
@@pandahermoso1668 He's talking about the KOM , not Gaimon
Strava is poor at estimating. When I'm in top 10 the guys right above and below me are usually like 400+ watts and then it says I'm 170 because I'm a no power meter 145 pounder.
About how long, in feet, is the climbing section of this hill?
Baxter st (31%) ! You can actually go up and over. So freaky while in your car it feels like you'll drop off the cliff.
Fargo St beats both. 34%.
@@hobbs2005 it wasn't about beating, it was about the stomach bottoming freakout factor of Baxter st.
That road hasn't been repaved since the 1910's?!
Welcome to Los Angeles!
come do the steepest road in the world in wales, I tried it on a wet day and failed 7 times. You can take our spare bunk ;P
You need to go ride some roads in St Thomas USVI if you want to see steep grades!!!
I just tried out this climb, felt myself falling backwards, wasn't confident enough to zig zag it ;;
The camera didn’t do that climb justice
Any of you tried Mix Canyon Road in Vacaville?
The dare devils are bombing down this streets on skateboards and you are worried about a garden hose? 🤣🤣🐈
this was good shit. i laughed so many times. this is how cycling should be!
this segment os too short to be accurate :( also, I´m surprised you didn´t go for the drops there, cheers!
Is it steeper than Fargo/Baxter streets? When I was in LA I biked up those and it was insane!
The guy who's 9th on the board in the video used to be local to me. He was fast but not ex-pro-tour fast. He was using an iPhone, ruining short segments since 2009.
The climb is short enough that it might favor a sprinter or puncheur for a KOM over an endurance climber.
Phil: *barely breathing* I'm out of breath but not hurting.
Me watching it: heart rate at 189bpm
Just watching you do this made me blow up... lol.
One thing is certain: Michael's moustache and hair go hard.
How fast did mustache Mike did!?
'get out of the way sweeper map' should have been the title
I'm out of breath.. watching the video!
Did you learn from Froome the washing machine technique?
Would it be wrong to trundle the trash cans at the top?
Camera man cameo needs to be permanent part of the show
question: what's your rear cassette teeth range? just curious
ufff😅🚴♂️se trata de tomar harta velocidad antes de ascender, o es más que eso🤔🚴♂️💪
Pittsburgh's Dirty Dozen wants You haha
3:58 I thought I was hearing stuff
You need a MTB for that KOM.
I thought it was the Fargo Street hillclimb.
Yo you should pick up August 2021 Thrasher magazine they have a 2 page spread about the guy bombing the hill
T Mo must have been drafting a car the whole way up lol 400 watts or maybe he’s 100 pounds
Looked kind of tame at first and then we see the truth. Damn that's steep.
I think Weed Wolf holds the KOM record!
Sound like an up standing gent.
The real tragedy is that Weed Wolf didn't add "420" to his name.
Whos the “T Mo” in first place? Is it Tracey Moseley?
This is the street skateboarders shred
Oh so Strava allows motorcycles now?
Whatabout Fargo? Eldred seems to have worse pavement but looks shorter. Baxter next to Fargo is fun, too! Maybe in 2022, the Fargo St Hill Climb will resume and you can set the record for most ascents.
100%. Fargo the steepest in LA. 34%.
I found this video which says it's slightly steeper than Fargo (but looks shorter). I also found that Fargo and Baxter have been turned into one-way streets, downhill.
ruclips.net/video/O2aRmq09qFA/видео.html
Been up that a few times. It’s the definition of A%¥hole. Love it!
Incredible fitness, strength and endurance and mad respect! If I was given those abilities overnight knowing that it goes hand in hand with an emaciated esque physique I’m not sure I would accept. Serious sacrifice and determination involved. Clearly I do not have the proper substance to achieve such incredible feats. Thoroughly impressed! Phil is always entertaining and quite a likable character.
