- A big part of Everesting is choosing the right climb and doing the homework. This video walks you through our climb criteria and research, testing with numbers from Phil's Coach . We verify the actual height of the climb with Jason from Integrated Informatics, learn about the history of Everesting with Andy Van Bergen from everesting.cc and cyclingtips.com, and consult with the current record holder, Tobias Lestrell.

You guys caught me as I rode by so I didn't really know what you where on about, haha. I had no idea this was a prelude to your Everesting challenge. Amazing effort the both of you!
Haha it was too perfect though!
☯️
Thanks for helping anyway. :)
Great 'tube crossover! Love both your channels!
Legend,
SAFA!
Tobias could not be any cooler. What a guy.
Love the geeking out ... and a session on GIS!! Thanks again Jason and Integrated Informatics for sponsoring Phil!
The dorky stuff is the best because it's the only part of the effort I can actually relate to haha! Can't wait to see you and Ben smash this record
Phil- thanks for keeping No Kids Hungry front and center in your messaging. I'm hoping for no spoilers as I watch your youtube channel videos through your attempt!
Ben's mustache and mullet will be the best thing that comes out of 2020.
ah fuck my name is ben and i have a mullet and mustache and i love to climb.... im not alone
Mike Lane that’s a mustache I thought a eyebrow had come down for a drink!
thats sad tho xD haha
Just donated. Thanks for being a good dude, and reminding us how to keep the right things in perspective.
I have lived in the Netherlands for 3 years now and I’m still looking for that hill in my neighborhood...
I wonder if anyone has ever done an everesting on a viaduct
19KingLloyd I live in the netherlands To we had a challenge with the club who can make the highest altittude in one ride and I did 500m of climbing on a bridge of 10m
get indoor trainer and put it hardest, then fail 1 meter. here everest in your basement
That's one of the veiniest arms I've ever seen
V A S C U L A R
Can’t stop staring at the drop 😯
Phlebotomists would fight to get to that guy.
That's what happens when you're only 2% bodyfat away from having your organs start to shut down... Not healthy at all
@@philipk4475 On behalf of me and the rest of my family, vascularity like that in one bodily area is not as closely related to body fat percentage as you'd think. Plenty of people have vascular shoulders, arms or legs for example while being well above the 8-9% bf threshold that often becomes unhealthy (say, between 13-17%)
Thanks for doing this man. It’s nice to see creators helping out the people in need
Great video Phil. Best of luck!
Best of luck looking forward the the everesting video
This awesome. Inspired me and a buddy to ride from Atlanta to Chattanooga and hit as many feet as possible. Won't do 29k, but will hit over 10k in 130 mile bike ride.
love the SAFA! Great to see two legends in one video! Was wondering if it was you he mentioned on strava the other day. haha love it!
God bless your heart Philly...glad to hear you found that really cool software called Microsoft
You’re awesome Phil!! Congrats!! Much better than racing. Way to persevere 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼👑
“George Mallory was the first person to summit Mt. Everest.” Well, they were spotted high on the mountain the day they disappeared but there is no official record of that summit. Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay are still have first official summit of Mt. Everest.
This. Mallory's story is great and tragic, and I tend to believe he and Sandy Irvine fell on their way down, but Hillary and Norgay were officially the first...
Barry Tantlinger I too tend to believe the story. Sometimes it’s harder to come down a mountain then go up.
Yes, Hillary & Tenzing were first on Everest. Andy Van Bergen made many factual errors in his interview with Phil. I did my initial Everesting bike rides in 1994, so before climbing Everest in May 1995. In 1994 I was working full time. Andy refused to bring his factual errors to Phil, which is direspectful and disappointing.
Phil: I would have wanted something longer.
Every dork on the Internet, including myself: That's what she said.
Truly the greatest of all time!
can't wait for more Phil. Still encourage you to race the Austin Driveway Series on Zwift during the pandemic!!! C'mon Phil, let's race online! See you Thursday?
most important thing to do today!
I've been wanting to ride that hill for ages.
I just hit that hill today...once was enough for me haha. I know this is an older video but great stuff!
For us native Los Angelinos, trash trucks used to haul the city’s trash up to the top. When the landfill was full they, interestingly, built houses on top of it.
Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but one of the few rules of everesting is that you need to do it on a "full ascent"...
"- Rides must be full ascents each time (Strava segments or the accepted ‘traditional’ climbing route will generally be the best guide for this. You can’t commit to a combination of full and half laps). Acceptable is a shorter segment of a climb if it is recognised in its own right. If in doubt, ask."
The "full ascent" segment would be this one: www.strava.com/segments/648187
Thanks for the entertainment Phil.
Beast 💪🏼
How upset would Phil be if one of his KOMs was so badly misattributed? Tensing Norgay the original king of the mountain! Great admirer of you and your channel.
Yep Norgay and the Kiwi Hillary did it first, There's no proof Mallory ever got there and he never made it back down.
Yes indeed, Hillary & Tenzing were first on Everest. Andy Van Bergen made many factual errors in his interview with Phil. I did my initial Everesting bike rides in 1994, so before climbing Everest in May 1995. In 1994 I was working full time. Andy refused to bring his factual errors to Phil, which is direspectful of Tenzing & HIllary and of Phil, and also very disappointing ethics.
Gonna go watch this with my dad
So sick, you had safa on!!
That road was used for a hill climb race back in the 1980's . The year I was there watching, Steve Hegg won it. 1984 Olympian Hegg was not a pure climber but man could he put out the power!
The first to climb mount everest were Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay!!!
The guy mentions George Mallory who attempted the summit in 1924 along with Andrew Irvine. His body was found at 8157m, but it remains unclear if they successfully summited or not. So to credit Mallory with the first ascent is controversial, but not entirely unfounded.
But they didn't do it on bikes, so it doesn't count
@@Thuky1 should have stated "first serious attempt",
@@Thuky1 Yup, Mallory did a lot of ground work and the successful attempt (Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay) "stood on his shoulders" but there is no claim he was the first... a better fact check would have been in order... :)

Haha awesome cameo from Safa
Safa cameo, nice !
"Title Here"
Mountaingate is a tough one, they used to do the Turkey Climb there in the 80's at Thxgiving.
I have climb that hill Tobias did the record on and once was enough to make me not climb it again. I think he did it 38 times with speeds going down hill over 100km, forget about tucking going down hill as the speed you can get is ridiculous . Also, I am mentioning this because he has talk about it, Tobias developed seizures after getting the world record, just something to keep in mind. He is a top bloke and did come third at the worlds 24hr MTB race.
Jason seemed pretty cool
Great. Now I want to everest. My head says GO, but my legs say NO.
What are the glasses Phil is wearing?
Ideally you would have a PLS set control beforehand of your specified route. You can also have PLS/GISP analyze the data in post (which you did). My prediction, as Strava gets more competitive, you're going to see more controversy over records. GPS error such as drift and multi-path on recreational watches and computers are enough to affect official results down to 1 to 2 seconds. Only a Professional Land Surveyor can legally certify time and location. Official Survey Grade GPS equipment is very expensive and very heavy.
Love the effort Phil as well as cause! On an entirely separate note, big fan of the sunglasses, care to share where there from? All the best, Jamie
They’re goodr
@@worstretirementever many thanks :)
great !!! question, what is the weight of this bike, how much kilos? thanks!
Edmund Hillary was the first person to climb to the top of Everest, not George Mallory. George climbed it but we don't know if he made it to the top.
What about Tenzing Norgay?
@@RodrigoLopez-tw3nx good call, him too :)

nice drop
Keegan Swenson yesterday did it under 8hours in 7:42 😂 before Phil even uploads Part 2
Monster achievement!
Awesome awesome awesome 👏
11:04 - does anyone have the number for AA? Guy has a bit of a drinking problem.
If you really want accuracy, there are specialist GPS units that average many readings over time to get centimetre accurate positioning. GIS is a good starting point, but unless the exact point has been surveyed you are relying on interpolated data not an actual measurement.
I am looking forward to the rest of the series
I think he mentioned using an elevation database with 1m spatial résolution (horizontal discretization). Which is quite good enough. (catalog.data.gov/dataset/usgs-national-elevation-dataset-ned-1-meter-downloadable-data-collection-from-the-national-map- )
If it makes you feel better the homes up there are built on an old garbage dump. Here’s an article from 1985 that talks about the race they used to have up it called the Turkey Climb. Some real legends took part. Strangely it even has a reference to George Mallory.

pretty cool Mark thanks!

I live in Houston, could Jason share his tool? He could probably charge for it as there is no scenic riding, primarily sprint segment KOM hunting!
You need to be on a steepish hill so that your speed is low. Best putting watts into gaining potential energy rather than overcoming friction
Know everyone is different, please explain: it seems every pro that Phil associates with has an undersized frame with oversized stem and extreme seat height to dropbar angle. I get the "Aero" explanation but that has been disproven by diminished returns in lung capacity limited VO2 more importantly virtually all TT disciplines from Sprint to Ironman Triathlon having upward bend aerobars and multiple spacers so why the disconnect with Roadbikes?
The one exception I have realized is Floyd Landis who rode stem with spacers and positive angle. Discuss...thx
safa and phil omg
Safa Brian!
what's with that saddle?
I have a little beard envy, Phil...
nice glasses!
You can go to Hells500 and submit your ride ( I only have done it twice VEveresting, in my mind as Epic as any Everest lol 😂 and no one can say otherwise 🤣🤣 Andy ( and co)is a super cool guy! Just make sure it’s not during holidays or you will have to wait for days to have approval to be on the Hall of Fame and if you are impatient like me, it is as torturous as the climb itself 😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄 Phil I cannot wait to see the other 2 episodes, will you hurry up already!!! 😛😛😛😛😛😛😛
Off topic... Equipment question: What kind of helmet is Ben wearing?
William Shields Thanks. But I don’t think so.
Wait. I see now. Yes. Thanks. Basically unobtainuim. ...his bike is unique as well.
What sunglasses are you wearing? Would love a affiliate link to purchase them!
I don’t have an affiliate link but they’re goodr! Polarized glasses starting at $25
Thanks brother !
They look like Circle Gs but in orange I think
Where is part 2?
Phil, What saddle are you running?
Ism pn 3.0
@@worstretirementever - please tell the story of how it improves "performance" again
Need a run through of ben’s mullet
I'm a GIS person as well. Unfortunately, in the end, it's whatever Strava says it is. So whatever the height of the segment is, use that.
what kind of sunglasses are those? I need them.
Goodr!
My god the veins on that arm

holy shit safa brian
Danny Chew of Pitts Dirty Dozen and RAAM Fame tells me he did an Everesting by Climbing Pitt's Cathedral of Learning stairs 68 times for over 29,000 vert feet!!
Local hill? I think the closest hill in my neighbourhood is the actual Mt Everest
The first confirmed climb of Mt Everest was by Edmund HIllary and Tenzing Norgay
Crazy saddle to bar drop lol
Would you take 69's donation for No Kid Hungry after it been rejected once?

Brian Safa is ridiculously fast on downhills
Ben's saddle looks way too high. Maybe its the camera.
Phil, please enter DK
Sounds like something Lionel Sanders would be good at
No, but to ride an Everesting fastest you mus choose the right climb. right must be right. The thing about an Everesting is the simplicity of it.
I can see right through ur brain, Phil.
Ben is constantly doing this thing with his mouth... like he just ate something. Which is fine... if I had his fitness and body... I would eat ALL THE TIME!!! Isn't that the point? LOL LMAO!
First😇😅
Mountaingate...
