    Outstanding review. Most useful I've seen. Just got my Specialita, due in part to your videos (thanks!). Your +/- grind chart seems like a good relative-vs-absolute way to navigate multiple grind settings. I'm making a similar one, adding Drip between Pour Over and French Press. I've started with your settings shown, and understand those were just examples. BTW, my burr touching setting turned out to be zero!

    Most honest review on RUclips! I’m doubting between a second hand Atom 60 V2 with about 6000 grinds on it, or this Specialita brand new...

      Thanks. The Atom is definitely a step up in build quality, but it's pretty tall for a home kitchen. I like the bellows system. I guess it comes down to price; I've heard that the Spet is getting expensive in some markets, I guess due to its popularity. I paid 359 euros plus shipping for mine, and I'm really pleased with it. But if I'd paid 500 euros or more, this review would have been very dark :)

    Fantastic video! I bought the Specialita after researching all week and this video sealed it for me. I like many brew methods and didn't want clutter of 2 grinders. Color matches my Gaggia. I followed your espresso settings and just had the best coffee I've ever made at home. Perfetto! Totally on par with espresso I've had at cafes. Our old cheap grinder seemed like it was going to give us severe hearing loss down the road so I decided to splurge. Very happy with this choice. Thank you!!

      I thought that was a great touch too. Today, I took off the portafilter mount and ground into a little glass bowl and it was significantly less messy. I ordered an Acaia 58mm dosing cup to try it more like the Niche Zero where you put your portafilter on top, upside down, then flip over the combo to pour the grounds into the portafilter with zero mess. Hopefully, that will get me to perfectly clean counters.

      I grind into a small class prep bowl and it's less messy. I have a 5.5" stainless steel canning funnel by HOXHA which I don't like b/c it's large but it helps funnel grounds into portafilter.

    I can't tell you how helpful (so much time and coffee you saved) it was for you to share your cheat sheet for the different types of coffee grinds and how far to turn the knob for each one. I was dialed in almost perfectly on my first espresso shot and I would have been grappling in the dark without the guidance. Thank you.

      Don't really get how to read it, touching is 3, so Turkish is 4, but then espresso +4 from 3 is only 1, not 2 on the note.

      @@destructoooo The +4 for espresso is based off the above setting (Turkish). So you're starting at from 4 (Turkish), not 3 (touching). Then rotate the dial counter clockwise (coarser) lands you on 2. Everything on the cheat sheet is from the above setting, not from touching burrs.

    A nice little grinder but I've found it needs a portafilter funnel. The portafilter height adjustment screw tends to loosen and would definitely benefit with a star washer and the 2 forks where the filter rests, bend easily. Otherwise I'm reasonably happy with my purchase.

    That’s funny, my hopper lid is perfectly silent. It’s also so hard to remove that I have to use fingernails to get it off 😂 Still very happy with it though!

      Different parts suppliers, I'd guess. Yep, the Spet has some "issues," but performs like a grinder that cost 50% more :)

    After a lot of research finally bought a Mignon Zero grinder, it's a amazing piece of art. However I've been struggling with the very little amount of information about the different settings in the dialing knob. I couldn't find so far any microns per mark chart (from zero point) for example. In some cases I saw information about the 3 full turns in the dial (from zero point) being the total range of settings from turkish to french press (0 to 1400 microns), and some others that mentions that is only 1.5 full turns for the full range (again, 0 to 1400 microns). So, pretty confused right now, is there any piece of information about this? Is the full range for the Mignon Zero 3 full turns to the dial knob?

    Great video, do you suggest going for the Specialita or stretching to the XL? I'm using a Europiccola with a Smart Grinder Pro at the moment and looking to upgrade grinders. Medium/dark espresso only 😊

      Either is good they perform very similar. I went with the Specialita and no longer use the Oro (no touchscreen) which had the same burrs as the XL

    It’s easy to zero the dial: unscrew fully, the knob is hollow so you can push something blunt through it and the disk with markings pops off, screw the knob back on and tighten to desired zero, pop disk on with zero aligned.

    Great review! I have the grinder but, interestingly enough, mine doesn't really go fine enough for Turkish. When grinding medium/light roasted coffee for espresso (17-18g in), I'm almost at the point of touching of burrs. Do you think calibrating would help?

      I would check the alignment in that case. If it's out of spec, then, yes it might grind better in the fine range. I use my Specialita for Turkish without trouble; you can see that I used it in my Turkish coffee video and the coffee was crystal clear. So I think you should be able to use it too.

    very well explained video I have a question? whether I turn the knob in the machine is that rotates more and more ( counterclockwise) the rotations become more difficult is this the 0 pointThere are two modes, one that is turned and it is difficult, and the other that the knob comes out of place as often as you turn it

      It should gradually get harder going clockwise, because you are compressing a spring inside, which you can't see from outside. If you turn it counterclockwise, the knob will eventually unscrew and come away. The zero point is when the burrs touch and you can't turn the knob clockwise any more with normal force.

      Thanks. It has a UK plug; it would be unusual for a retailer to supply wiring for regions outside their own location, although some do.

    Thanks for the video. Hilarious and informative. Question: does it do Turkish grind well, or is it a compromise? Any mod for the horrible grind adjustment knob?

      So long as the burrs are correctly aligned (and they almost always are), it will do really good Turkish. It's what I used in my Turklish coffee vid, and you can see there's not a speck of grit floating in it. You can get a larger knob / spare part for another Mignon, but you still have to remember where you park it.

    Thanks for your informative videos. Just out of curiosity after seeing both your specialita and oro videos, most internals look identical. Do you think bottom and top burr carriers of the 65mm can fit into the specialita existing mounts without modification?

      The upper burr carrier has different mounting holes (2 vs 3), and the lower has a different coffee outlet, so neither part would fit the Spet without mods.

    Bought a new specialita based on this review two weeks ago. Was very happy this morning until it stopped grinding. Opened it up to see what the problem was and the chute entry was completely clogged. I probably have only ground no more than 1kg through the grinder. I’m getting horrible retention as well even after cleaning of around 2 grams. I’m at a loss with what to do. I’ve ordered the bellows kit as well as starting RDT. Do you have any advice

      You can tilt it back and let it fall forward after grinding and/or lightly tap the chute housing with a wooden brush handle or whatever. Some people say the clump breaker gives them trouble. It's easy to remove, or you could just bend it upward slightly to increase the opening. I live in an extremely humid climate, but drier air means more static charge. It was designed as an on-demand grinder, not meant for single dosing, although I get away with using it that way. If you keep the hopper fairly full, it should work; I've heard very few complaints about it configured that way. Good luck.

    Enjoyed the review. Not sure you are still following comments, but hopefully here goes: I have the Specialita and the Mignon bump hopper and bellows, for single dosing, so I am hoping to keep the hopper and burrs free of retention. However, just opened up after 4 weeks of light use, and clump crusher area blocked up and some coffee grounds inside the motor area, Took bottom off, and a fair bit came out. So use of bellows encourages coffee to get into the grinder housing. Maybe this also an area for the new single dose grinder to have a problem and hence delays. I wonder if you have any recommendations tor use of the bellows when single dosing on Specialita, or am I just causing a problem with internal coffee getting into motor and lower wiring and electronics? If there is a recommended channel where I should ask this please advise. Thanks

      I'll be getting a single dose as soon as its released, so i might have some insights in the review of it. I will try out the SD hopper and bellows on my Spet and see if they work properly. You might check the home barista forums; plenty of threads about grinders there.

For info, Here in Thailand I had placed a preorder for the single dose, but after your video about the delays, and me getting fed up with hand grinding for my Robot, I moved the deposit to the Specialita, which was in stock. Happy with it. Can grind directly into the Robot basket and do not even need wdt any more, as no clumps, so a quick circular swirl of the basket, tamp and done.

    SpecialitA is a specialized espresso grinder so I guess that explains the less than ideal grind adjustments for different brew methods.

      Ah, not true. Eureka categorizes it as a general-purpose grinder: www.eureka.co.it/en/catalogo/prodotti/1/All+Purpose/index.aspx . The "espresso grinder" nonsense appears to be a popular superstition among RUclips coffee experts.

      Good value for money as an all purpose grinder. If you're into espresso alone, maybe save more with a quality hand grinder? Or splash out with the Niche Zero? Yeah, I'm a New Yorker :)

    what do you think of its sibling silenzio ? do the 55 mm burrs in specialita make any difference in grind quality/consistency compared to the 50 mm burrs in the silenzio ? I personally don't care about the touch screen or the grinding speed and will single dose anyways

      The Silenzio is a perfectly competent all-purpose grinder and good value for money. The extra 5mm means nothing by itself, but the burr design is a bit different; the Spet is definitely focused on Turkish & espr.

    I wander if you can help me, I have the specialita, and I can't get fine enough, the burrs are a hair from touching and the burrs are aligns according to your video, but the shots are still too fast (my espresso range is much closer to the burrs touching then yours)

      If the burrs are aligned, you should be able to get them close enough to grind for espresso. Typically, the problem is if they're not parallel, and they almost touch on one side, but the opposite side has a big gap that lets large particles through, which makes espresso difficult. So If they are aligned nicely, then I would wonder if anything like coffee grit could be interfering with the adjustment linkage. And if not, then maybe it has something to do with the espresso machine, or puck prep, or too small a dose, or something like that. Good luck.

      Pourover is my default drink, so I'd be really disappointed if it wasn't good. Like any grinder in its class, you see less consistency as you go coarser, but the Spet is better than most grinders under $500 US. And it's very consistent at the fine end of the scale.

    I love the look and the UX, However, to get a grind fine enough for espresso I have to grind at the point where the burrs nearly touch.... I have aligned the burrs using your other (great) vide,o but still not luck... Have I just been unlucky?

    I see the specialita has 55 mm burrs, but the cheaper mignons have 50 burrs. Are the burrs really 5 mm bigger? Does 5 mm actually make a difference in grind quality and taste? If it does matter, do the bigger burrs fit the other models, like the Silenzio?

      An extra 5 mm makes no noticeable difference if the design is identical. But within the Mignon range there are some different edge patterns, so, yes, there will be some differences in performance. The Spet is clearly focused on the Turkish \ espresso range. All of the Mignons are competent grinders, though.

    I have been using mine for 3 years and use it 100% of the time for espresso. Why invest in an expensive grinder for drip or French press coffee when a $20 grinder is good enough? What I like about the Mignon Specilista is that it is fast and easy to adjust the grind when I change from one type of beans to another. It is not difficult to clean the grinder which is an annual exercise.
    The criticisms are moronic and give a false impression of the machine. It is like criticizing the gas filler cap on a Porche.

    It seems I can turn it multiple full rotations, at about 6 rotations the dial is very loose. Am I doing it wrong. Newbie here.

      That sounds right. The useful range from just touching seems to be around 3 maybe 4 full rotations. Much looser than that is kinda off the scale. That thing I printed is the stops, not the rotations.

    I adore mine. The only issue is the vibration increase when I change from espresso to coarser grinds - do you find that, too? It’s purely a sound issue rather than quality, but annoying nonetheless.

      Same here. Mine sounds about the same through the range of grit sizes. My only issue is the noisy hopper lid, as shown in the video. The Spet has a few irritating ticks, but it does perform well :)

    Mine arrived just today. Sadly, I have to wait another day for my new espresso machine.
    I would be curious to see a DIY single dosing hopper which can be pressurized, just like the blow up system for the bigger Eureka grinders.
    Actually, I know a few people with tools so I might try that for myself.

    Excellent and very helpful review which basically convinced me to get one! Now... I like the little machine but I'm loosing my mind (and a lot of precious beans) trying to adjust the damn thing. I do believe I found my 0 (combination of your friendly technique and sound, yeah I know) so I'm at 5. Great! +1,5 + 2 brings to espresso range (between 0,5 and 1). Versus your observed +4 to begin espresso range(up to a massive +7 for the end of it) that's drastically different. Moreover, I see most people online with much longer grinding time to get to 18g (often close to 10 seconds ?!). With this grind level I'm at 6.3 for a 18.5g out. That seems awfully fast. Any thoughts ? Thanks again!

      When I say espresso range, in a video anyone might watch, I mean the limits for all kinds of devices, whereas you're using one espresso device, so naturally the range that works for you is narrower. My grinder comes farther from the 0 point because I aligned the burrs very carefully. Yours seems fast to me too; maybe you're grinding too coarse. Worry about shot times, not grind times. TLDR: don't worry about what anyone else is doing; dial in your grinder for your coffee device. Whatever makes good coffee is right :)

      @@-Vee_ Ended up getting a DF64 and couldn't be happier. While the Eureka is a great looking, quality and silent grinder it was not the right tool for me. I like to experiment with a variety of beans and roasts and making the minute adjustments was very frustrating. Cleaning it up was a pain VS the df64 and also meant losing that presice point where I had to start the guess work all over again. Single dosing is also where I was heading all along. If sticking to the same beans and using the hopper/timer, the specialita is great.

      @@VoicelessScream I just got single dose hooper for the grinder and I use Eureka only for espresso so I don't have to switch between brewing methods. I also have a Ezpresso JX PRO manual grinder that I use it for French Press or Aeropress.
      What confused me on this video was the grinder adjustment mentioned. He says +4 from touching point will be espresso range for him where on my grinder is about +1 +1,5 for espresso which made me think is something wrong with my grinder.

    Hi. Thanks for the review. Just recieved my Specialita. One question though. I cannot tell when the burrs touch to mark the starting point. I turn to finner and it gets harder and harder to turn but no end lock point. Thanks in advance.

      You can turn the motor manually, as I show in the burr-alignment video. As soon as you feel slight resistance, the burrs are starting to touch.

I noticed that the burs are not aligned, when i manually turn there is some gaps where they dont touch, that is they start touchin partially. Im not surre if its worth the hassle to align them because i will use the machine for espresso 99% of the time...

I tried all three combos and put it back so that i can feel most of the surface touching when i turn the motor. I guess this also makes marginal difference. Thanks for the replies. The grind quality from this machine is really pulling excellent shots..

    Glad you indicated price. In the US it is really jacked up to $700. My vote would be to get the Sette 270 and save the cash.

      I hated the 270wi. It’s disgustingly loud, cheap plastic, and shot grounds all over the place. I returned mine within 3 weeks. This is a dream in comparison.

      It's a good grinder, but I wouldn't pay $700 for it. OTOH, the Sette 270 really isn't in the same class. I would pay that kind of money for a Mazzer Lux or SJ, however.

      @@wiredgourmet Right, but then you lose the digital timer. The Mignon line also works well as a zero retention single dosing grinder with $15+ 3D printed dosing hoppers that you can get on Etsy. Nothing but the Niche Zero (which has a 3-5 month waitlist) seems to do that near this price point.

      I had a Sette 270 before the Specialita. It was good but extremely loud and has plastic gears turning the burr which predictably died after 2 years. BTW Baratza was super nice and replaced the whole gear unit for free even though it was well out of warranty.

    As someone who also uses different brew methods I think the inconvenience of adjusting the size is a deal breaker. The fact that u have to print a chart to keep track is too much for a grinder that expensive imo
    I’m leaning towards the perfetto. Might not be able to dial a shot as precisely but seems way easier to swap between grind sizes

      Well, I'll be getting a new, updated Oro Single Dose (the first one was kinda broken), which has the same motor and burrs and adjustment. I think you'll be able to infer a lot about the XL from that one, when I post it. Haven't received the improved SD yet, though.

    Great review! Got mine a few weeks ago but I am having a lot of issues with the chute being clogged, apparently, the static screen causes that. Did you experience anything like this?

      Thanks. I haven't had that problem, which surprises me because it looks like the kind of 'solution' that might backfire in just that way. Maybe climate has some effect, IDK. I live in IE which is always very damp. If you try removing it, let us know if that helps.

      I have the same problem with the Filtro unit. I took out the clumping screen and it still starts clogging after 1 or 2 30 gram batches.

      @@wiredgourmet It was a little better without the screen, but still was clogging. I contacted the seller and complained about this and got no real help or direction. I boxed it up and picked up a Comandante hand grinder. Now, a few months later, I'm wondering if maybe this issue will go away with more seasoning of the burrs. I will probably pull it back out and run a couple pounds of beans through and see if that helps at all.

      @@craigraper6169 Sounds like a plan; let us know if anything changes. In the mean time, I removed my screen and started grinding without it, and I'm seeing retention that I hadn't seen earlier. My experience so far is that the screen helps, so I'll probably replace it in a week or two. But I will do a second review after a few months of daily use and talk about the little snags that come up over time.

    Had my specialita for almost a month now. Still not got used to it. I’m thinking I have a bad one out of the bunch. Needed balancing by a fair bit and the setting for an espresso is half of one number off touching for a medium dark roast at 18g in. As for retention. When I clean it I can easily get 6g of ground coffee out of it. Should have bought a second hand unit that had been used and confirmed a decent grind. This will probably go back once my Niche Zero arrives. Oh and putting a light roast through the specialita, you may as well just put the coffee straight into the bin.

      Bad luck in the lottery, I see. A common cause of poor burr alignment in a new machine is a loose burr fastener. Check all six, and see if one isn't loose. I also have a howto vid on burr alignment: ruclips.net/video/Gb3PgeQ6ewY/видео.html

    A point of common sense. If the grinder has already been used and has retained it’s nominal amount of ground coffee, every subsequent grind output should be equal to it’s input.

      Not really better, but different. The Niche Zero is nice, especially for espresso. The Baratza Sette 270 and Vario lines are good too. But I don't know of anything noticeably better than the Spet in this price range.

      @@wiredgourmet i have lelit bianca espresso machine, my touching point is 5, i return +4 to get espresso grind but the extraction was very quick 45gr for 20s, i continued try different settings finally i get 36ml for 27 second the dose was 18gr but i only adjust +1.5 from touching position, one more thing more you increase grinding more you get retention in eureka mignon, the best way to adjust is the time of grinding for espresso 18gr we need 9 second of grinding😇😇

    No mention of the faulty touch-LCD where the display deforms when you touch the screen? (I see yours does it too). Here in Oz I’m being told that’s not a fault, and (so far) they won’t replace, refund or repair it. It screams a poor design or a bad batch of displays they’re sticking/stuck with.

      I don't believe it's faulty, just cheap. On balance I like the display because it's bright, bold, and simple, so I gave it a pass. Eureka cut a number of corners, just not ones affecting the grinding performance. I'll be doing a second review after several months of using it daily, mentioning all the little snags.

    My Specialità arrived unable to grind fine enough for espresso.
    Even when the burrs where touching a little bit, the shot would rush out in about 20s with multiple channels. The taste was sour and very astringent at the same time. I suspect a lot of fines and boulders at the same time due to misaligned burrs, even though I used your shimming technique.
    I have returned the grinder to the shop and looking at their video proof they were able to barely grind fine enough for their espresso machine when the burrs were almost touching. They determined the grinder as working within spec and sent it back to me.
    Still unable to produce usable coffee grounds I decided to try installing new replacement burrs as a last resort. Now, I can easily choke my machine (90s shots) and the taste is on the same quality level as my trusty Kinu m47.
    I am unable to visually locate any differences between the replacement burrs and the faulty originals, so I can't really elaborate on the root cause.

      Sorry to hear you had such a hard time. In my experience, the usual cause of mis-alignment in a new machine is when one or two of the 6 burr fasteners (the slotted ones in your case) were not torqued properly during assembly. I don't think I've ever seen an actually defective pair of new burrs that would not seat properly, but you might have. Glad you got it sorted and are enjoying it now.

      @@wiredgourmet I am having the same issue. To brew espresso with my Robot (also bought after watching your great Robot review) I have to grind either close to or at the Specialita chirping point. Sometimes, even at the chirping point, I get a bad 15-20s shot.
      I have replaced the burrs and re-aligned them multiple times... And each time I notice an improvement... but after a while, I am back again to grinding to the chirping point.
      Do you think this is fixable or is it a factory assembly issue?

      Well, the coarser you go, the less consistent the grind regardless of the machine. I wouldn't buy something this expensive *only* for cold brew. You could probably do a tolerable job with a blade grinder and a sieve. However, the finer you grind, the more you'll appreciate a burr grinder.

      The Atom is a noticeable step up in build quality and grind consistency. You can get a hopper with a bellows that eliminates retention so even at that size it's a good single doser. It's also a serious step up in price, though: I paid only 360 GBP for my Spet, and I'm pleased with it in that context. This review would not have been so positive if I'd paid, say, 500 or more.

      @@DM-sc4zy Grid quality is similar. E5 retention is low, Atom with the bellows is near zero. E5 is more compact and has a really nice PF rest; Atom excels in quiet and just feels more heavy duty. E5 is espresso focused; Atom is more capable with the full range from Turkish to FP. In this price range, you're going to get professional results, but there will be trade-offs. If you're willing to pay double, then you can eliminate the compromises :)

      @@DM-sc4zy My Spet has virtually no retention. Maybe 1 or 2 tenths of a gram. You can see that again in my burr-alignment vid where I take it apart. However, some channel regulars have reported that their Spet retains coffee, like a gram or so. Perhaps climate is a factor. Or there could have been a minor design refresh, or a change in parts suppliers. Or it could just be that inconsistent.

      The Specialita is a lot better than the i2 (conical). However, the Ascaso i1 (flat) is not a bad grinder. I'd prefer the Eureka, but if the i1 was substantially cheaper, I would consider it.

    I don't think they ever said / advertised it as having no retention, did they? While it's great it has good dosing accuracy, it is not the same as retention. You don't know how much of the coffee was retained, stuck in there, and came out from the PREVIOUS batch of coffee put in. Some people have measured about 1-2g I think for this model, which isn't too bad.

      @@wiredgourmet You are the only one on the Internet claiming Eureka Mignon is zero retention. Not even Eureka claims that. Being exceptional is *not* "no retention". For single dosing + zeron retention you need:
      1-. Something reducing the "popcorn" effect
      2-. Something to push the remaining ground coffee out.
      To solve retention, most "solutions" (including Blow-up system by Eureka themselves) choose to pass air through the grinder to reduce the retention to virtually zero (in the range of 0.1gr)
      For "popcorning" I saw many solutions, usually implying the use of a 3D printer. And some solved both, like this one: ruclips.net/video/OZJnfMWaXeE/видео.html

      @@ximotur I got one myself now, Using a popular 3d printed single doser mod with a pump blower thing, it does seem to usually get out about an extra 1.3-2 grams which it normally would be retained.

    Not good for single dosing, retention is high. A blower would help, good grinder but it will go to drip coffee bean duty.

    My Specialita clogged daily after two weeks of use. My previous grinder, a Mazzer, never clogged up in 15 years of use. I do not recommend, unless you just want a pretty door stop.

    Useful information but the need to nit pick is pretentious and adds nothing of value. Review feels it is noisy but provides no decibel comparisons with other home use grinders. Little about consistency of the grind or the durability with the metal mechanisms. If the housing is part plastic but reduces the cost that is not a con but normal, even a BMW has a lot of plastic parts.
