    Thank you. Got mine today and i absolutly agree. The biggest problem for me is as you said to get 20 gramms in the portafilter. So much messing around. My filter is too big to use a funnel, it doesn‘t fit in the holder with the funnel. Thx

    Just got my Specialita last week and this is 100% accurate. I use a funnel when grinding because 16g overflows in the portafilter. I single-dose my shots and there is ALWAYS 1 or 2 beans that stay stuck on the door that closes the hopper. I have to keep an eye on it and shake it a bit to get the wayward beans off. Thinking of getting the single dose hopper. Other than that very happy with the grind consistency.
    I removed the portafilter holder because I use a blind portafilter and the holder was made for portafilters with spouts

    Thank you for this review. Just got my Specialita today. I agree with you on all three pros and cons! A bit of retention as well.
    I would like to find some type of device like a bellow to push out any remaining coffee grinds after dosing.

    • @BensCoffeeRants
      @BensCoffeeRants 3 года назад +1

      I think a Single dose mod is a good upgrade, but I'm not sure a bellows is really worth it. I found on mine I can get out 1-2g from pumping the bellows, but there was a lot of fine particles, which if included in the espresso shot might affect the extraction negatively (it might not though!). But I don't think most of that actually comes out with regular use, it doesn't get exchanged so doesn't really affect anything. I think it's a fine grinder for single dosing / low retention.
      You can test it out yourself if you can manage to prep two shots of espresso the same way, see if the first comes out any faster, or tastes noticeably worse than the 2nd. If retention actually affects the grinder you should notice the first shot would generally be not as good and may flow faster than the 2nd.

      Completely agree with you.
      - that hopper is a disgrace, my box of cotton buds from Johnson&Johnson has a better plastic lid.
      - the plastic thing to close the bottom to lift the hopper must be made from recycled barcode label holders for cheap hand tools. And since you need a screwdriver to remove the hopper, I wonder why they bothered.
      - I’m also thinking about some form of single dose mod ...
      - I have modified my funnel and carefully adjusted my fork and I can grind hands-free without mess.
      That said I’m really happy with it, the Niche is beyond what I would have spent on a grinder, one day I’ll buy another Eureka dedicated to filter (although since I have La Pavoni my V60 is gathering dust).

    How the hopper looks won't affect the grind consistency so this in not really an issue. The portafilter holder i think is designed for portafilter with spouts so it does not move around and yes you will need a funnel but you should be using a funnel in the first place so this is bearable. It achieves consistency which is paramount to achieving good espresso. Also you can unscrew the portafilter holder and using a dosing container instead aka teh container you used to weigh your beans in before you poured them into the hopper.

    The grinder retains approximately 2 grams. That has been demonstrated many times by others. You are getting the same number of grams out as you put in, but two of those grams are from the last time you used it. There is a work around. I will post it below

    • @BensCoffeeRants

      I guess the question is really how much coffee do you need to purge when changing beans or grind settings, right?
      Also, if you're not changing between brew methods and you just run the same beans until they run out, that shouldn't be a problem, just the occasional minor tweak on the grind setting to keep up with the beans as they develop...

    After a week, the insides would be full. 20 grams in and 20 grams out seems obvious. In my mind this says nothing about retention. The question i have is; how many of those 20 grams are fresh? How many of those are retained but replenished by older coffee? Or is this a stupid question?

    I don't know why people take issue with the hopper and lid. It's very good quality plastic and doesn't sound cheap and flimsy when you handle it. I got the smoked black version ("Fume" they call it at Eureka) and it's beautiful, and gives the grinder an interesting all black silhouette. These days you can also buy an optional metal or wood lid for the hopper from Eureka if you prefer. They also offer the "cleaning kit" which is essentially a round hopper with a black bellows that gives a different look and blows out coffee retention. I honestly wonder what the people who don't like this kind of quality plastic would prefer. Glass? Glass breaks. I also never bother to tighten the screw after I insert the hopper after monthly cleaning and it's a snug fit and doesn't wobble or sound cheap and hollow.

    I have the same grinder, just under a different brand name. I have been using it for the last three years. I would add to the pros that it's not too difficult to take apart and clean, the shoot is long, and you should run a simple plastic brush up inside regularly. As for cons, when I am grinding, I will put my fingers on the grind setting knob, it tends to move. Personally, I removed the hook for the portafilter and use a funnel. I wish it had a start button next to the grind settings. I am happy with the grinder and would buy it again if I needed to. When you take it apart to clean, you will see that it is very well made, with no plastic parts!

      I have the Specialita. The answer is espresso is the most demanding for grinding so it will easily do what you want. The real question is how easy it is to switch between the two and the answer there is forget it! If it is occasional then maybe it is OK otherwise you will need two grinders. I don't like the Sette 270 but this is where the 270 is good in enabling you to switch between the two grind types.

      @@alexanderb.1515 Yes I noticed a significant improvement in quality. I had a Flair Signature and upgraded to a Flair 58. The SGP could not grind fine enough without sounding like it's damaging itself and the finer grounds came out very clumpy so I upgraded to the Specialita. It's an absolute dream. It grinds quickly and quietly. From reviews I know the 270 is very fast and low retention but is very loud hence and tends to break a lot so that's why I went with the Specialita.

  • @ozpain1

    My Specialita zero has actually become the number 5 position (clockwise from the 0 position). espresso range is somewhere delicately between slightly before and just after the 0 spot. Shot times are extremely long, over 1 minute, but the taste is good. Anything in the 27 to 30 second range tastes very sour. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. Using a QM Pathfinder and a Flair 58. The 58 helped confirm that temperature wasn't the problem.

So I was surprised to find its 1.65m (on the XL at least) which surprised me. I bought this grinder two months ago, and I too agree with you on the cons. I have also found that the adjustment is very sensitive, and with an espresso brand change, the grind may require an adjustment. For a dark roast, like Lavazza Super Crema, I set the adjustment to 2.5. Another positive is the small footprint on the countertop. Thank you for your review.

    For a fair measure of 'retention' you have to start with a cleaned-out grinder. Otherwise, you don't know how much was retained from the last grind. I love the Specialita and I narrowly dodged the Sage/Breville Pro myself and don't regret it. I'm not too worried about the hopper. Some people bin the hopper in favour of a single dose (non-standard) device, although I've not taken that route myself.

      @TheFrenchReview  3 года назад

      That's a fair comment, agreed. I am planning on doing a video just about coffee retention and comparison with the SGP and NZ. Like you I haven't taken the route of the single dose. Thanks for the video. I own the Specialita for about 8 months now. I started noticing problems with it when I opened it to clean it. First I thought it was the misalignment and I fixed it but even now, I can only get my 20-25 second extraction when the burrs are touching each other. No one talked about this on RUclips and I don't know if that's normal or not. Where do you get your sweet spot?

    I switched from the Baratza 270. Here is what I found. 1. The Mignon is MUCH quieter. 2. Compared to the 270, the Specialita's hopper is just cheap crap. Love it's shape. Hate it's lack of substance and the "push card" to stop the bean flow is comical. 3. Retention, compared to the Baratza, is terrible. I have purchased a single-dosing set-up with a bellows to get that last 1-2g out of the chute. Of course, the 270 doesn't have a chute. It drops coffee straight into the portafilter. 4. This thing is a royal mess! And worse with darker roast beans that are oilier than lightly roasted ones. 5. Grind consistency, compared to the Baratza 270 is mediocre and, again, worse with darker roasts. But it is quiet and it does feel as if it will last forever. I am glad I sold my 270 for close to what it cost me a year ago. Otherwise I would be upset.

    Yep, I don't care that the hopper is plastic, the problem is the design is bad, it's nice how it fits in nice and tight to the grinder, but like I can see in your video I've had stray bean fragments escape the slot for the hopper cut off chute, since there's an opening, the slot is not sealed tight. Also you can't get the chute shut off thing totally out of the way so while single dosing i've seen a bean get snagged up on it instead of going down into the grinder. Much better and cleaner to use with a single dose mod, either with a PVC pipe with a cut in it, or a 3d printed design, or something from Etsy (also likely 3d printed).
    I think there's a way of it locking in the portafilter holder fork better but I don't bother with it, I have it off on mine, just hold the thing for 10 seconds it's better for coffee distribution to move it around while it's dispensing I think.
    What you're measuring with 20g in 20g out is dose consistency not necessarily grinder retention. What you need to do is clean it out completely and then see how much of your very first dose disappears, even then you don't know how much of the retention is actually being exchanged or if it's static retention just filling in the voids (stuck in there and not affecting your next coffee at all).
    It's really difficult to know if when you put in 20g whether 10g of that is from the last 20g you put in there..
    I think what I might do, is get some "Grindz" coffee cleaning tablets, weight one or two and put it through and see how much coffee comes out, before I see the 'grindz' coming out (since it's a white-ish colour it should be obvious, I'm surprised no one's thought of this before when testing retention). I suspect only about 0.5g is being exchanged, which is pretty good.
    I think you made the right choice vs the Niche Zero. Flat burr taste profile is just better for me at least.

    • @TheFrenchReview
      @TheFrenchReview  3 года назад

      Hey Ben, thanks for the feedback. Do you only use the Eureka mignon with single dose? I actually got rid of the fork and find it much easier and less messy. Also got a eureka drip tray on etsy. It did help.
      Based on what you said, i am currently working on a video around coffee retention and will do a test with 5 single doses on each grinder and see what will come out and will check with the tablets as well if you don't mind. That's a brilliant idea. If you have any more feedback or video ideas let me know.

    • @BensCoffeeRants
      @BensCoffeeRants 3 года назад

      @@TheFrenchReview I'd suggest doing the grindz test and see how much coffee comes out like weigh and put in like 0.5g or less at a time in the grinder and see how much it takes until coffee stops coming out and you see the white grindz powder and maybe also weigh how much coffee comes out as well if you can and then you got your actual exchanged coffee retention. Another test to see if it really affects anything is to not use the grinder for a day or optimally few days then put in 18g or whatever for your espresso shot and see if it runs faster and tastes worse than your 2nd shot. You'll have to be really consistent with the espresso prep. And machine has to also be consistent which is pretty difficult to achieve usually.
