    Currently using my Breville SGP and planning on an upgrade after my birthday in a few months. There are so many options - for company, burr type, coating, and size, motor power etc... it's so overwhelming. So much conflicting info about how much difference these variables truly make.
    I know almost any grinder I buy will be a huge step up from the SGP, but it's so easy to talk yourself into and out of a grinder for various reasons

  • @gmofftarki
    @gmofftarki 2 года назад

    Thanks for the hard work. You've convinced me that it's not necessary for me to upgrade from my Specialita... with a completely stock unit, I only get 0.3 grams of retention when trying to single-dose it, similar to your mentioned numbers before smacking the bellows.
    Have you had the opportunity to look at any of the Ceado grinders? They have the E5SD which seems like a natural competitor to this thing, but I haven't really seen any discussion of their stuff outside of channels from their vendors (for my part, I'm more interested in the e37SD primarily due to the microadjustment knob. I have suspicions how awful it would be trying to dial in an espresso while rotating the entire top burr carrier, but the price point starts to approach some of the boutique stuff).

Or did I miss a video

  • @FatNorthernBigot
    @FatNorthernBigot 3 месяца назад

    I have this grinder. It's not quiet. I'm glad it's not just mine. It feels like an industrial grinder in a consumer case. I'm not entirely sure if that's good or not. I'd rather that way around than a cool case with sparrows fart for a motor. Holding the hopper helps with the din. I only mention the noise because I have a rotary pump espresso machine, so it feels very slick, quiet and is at odds with the Eureka. Having said that, the Eureka is very consistent, has never clogged, and the retention is minimal. If I was deaf, it would be the perfect grinder. Incidentally, there are now SSP burrs for this grinder. Oh, and great video, Mr H.

  • @juststeve1539

    As for the reason that Eureka does not recommend RDT, it might have something to do with beans not getting down to the burrs. Someone spritzed their beans in another video that I watched on this grinder and because the hopper sits at that 15 degree angle, a couple of the beans kind of stuck to the bottom of the hopper and he had to poke those into the hole. He mentioned that when he did the same retention tests without using RDT, that issue did not present itself.

    • @LanceHedrick
      @LanceHedrick  Год назад +4

      I had the issue happen with and without rdt, to be fair. And this is a common problem in grinders.

    On the grider reviews it would be nice to know the range of settings for espresso dark and light roasts. Too many grinders are described as "a small adjustemt makes a big change". I find this unacceptable for dialing in and later returning to an espresso grind setting.

  • @Cyb3rGlitch
    @Cyb3rGlitch 2 года назад +3

    You can greatly reduce retention without bellows or RDT by turning the grinder back on immediately after grinding. The kick of the motor knocks extra grind out. I consistently get 0.02g retention with espresso grind.

    Great video as always , thanks Lance.
    Btw, considering retention, shouldn't it be measured by first cleaning the whole burr area (+ shute) and then comparing in- and output (every time)? Or else it seems to me like an X amount of grams might be inside after a grind, during next grind the X amount from previous grind comes out first, and at the end a new X amount of grounds is left behind. You would measure with a "filled grinder" only the consistency regarding throughput no?

    • @Phil_OG

    So the reason for no rdt, in my opinion: it makes for clump build-up in front of the clump crusher!
    In my specialita the hole from the grind chamber through the declumper is really small and the water builds up little clumps in front of it that I found recently in my deep clean taking it apart.
    So i just removed the declumper, now I get almost 0 retention with rdt on the specialita an no coffee building up inside 👍

    • @LanceHedrick

I looked at your previous reviews of the Niche but couldn’t tell which one you prefer (if you do prefer one over the other at all). Really like your videos and reviews.
    On this particular review though, I’m not sure I got the “final thought” from you. I know you’re not trying to give a black/white verdict on if it’s rights for everyone, but certainly to answer the question in the video title (is it worth the money).
    I don’t own this grinder, but i have seen and used the specialità. From motor to burrs to case and pretty much everything, this really seems to be one of those on a ramp. Even has the remnant button that is used for portafilter that doesn’t seem to work for this design. “Louder than a Baratza Sette,” Made me spit out my espresso, because as an owner of a Sette, I could barely believe what I heard even with the hearing aid the Baratza caused me to get. That seems crazy from the same company that made the Silenzio. Also because of the increased cost of this grinder. I’ve some other RUclipsrs review and compare the Oro, and most seem to conclude that it’s nice and all, just not worth the money.
    I suppose that you’re going to do some amount of comparison with the DF64 review to really answer if this grinder is worth the money.

At the same sound pressure, different frequencies are going to be more annoying than others. Coming from a PC geek point of view, plenty of fans come close to the same volume level as Noctua fans, but they sound much worse.
      And I can certainly see people being interested on how a grinder or espresso machine is going to sound. Just depends on how deep down the measurement rabbit hole you want to go!

    What's the differences or Advantage / Disadvantages between DC and AC motor, I remember the Baratza Vario marketing I think saying the DC motors are better because you get instant torque, like no ramping up in speed. I believe the Lagom P64 has a DC Brushless motor but it kinda ramps itself up anyway (which is moot anyway, since it's a single dosing grinder and you can 'hot load' it anyway).

    Something I notice in many videos (in addition to yours) is very few people use a consistent noise-measuring approach. In industrial machines, most noise specifications specify a distance from the equipment (e.g., one metre away). I suggest adopting a measurement routine along those lines rather than moving the microphone close to the surface. This routine, when used consistently while measuring noise on different pieces of equipment, should give a better basis for comparison.

    • @johnkoroglu8640
      @johnkoroglu8640 Год назад

      @John P. John, how about Eureka's own Red Speed burrs ? As explained in the video here, Eureka's stock burrs are very similar in geometry & teeth config to those of Gorilla and SSP as well. I'm super curious about them. (ps: I know a few cafe owners that use Atom 75s with their Red Speed burrs if that's any indication...)

    • @BensCoffeeRants
      @BensCoffeeRants Год назад

      @@johnkoroglu8640 I don't think the redspeed coated Eureka burrs are going to change the taste profile, if the burr geometry is the same, it's just a coating for greater longevity, mostly useful for commercial use, for home use, it will extend the burrs lifetime from like 12-20 years, to 100+.
      Also not sure if they have a 64mm coated burr, but I do believe SSP is coming out with ones that will fit Eureka grinders soon. Those have different geometry which will give you different grind quality.

      I haven't tried Gorilla Gears myself, but I remember hearing they are higher body / lower clarity (It might be better for dark roasts) not sure if it's worth changing since Eureka burrs aren't super high clarity, they have a good balance already.

    JUNE 2024 - STILL WAY TOO MUCH VIBRATION. I purchased this grinder new in Australia. I had read all about the first batch's vibration issues, and that they'd been resolved. Sadly, these ORO Single Dose units still have 3-4 times the vibration of Eureka's upright grinders, even vs the XL with same 65mm burr set. I was shocked and disappointed, so I drove to the distributor to compare the Eureka range. The vibrations on their display Single Dose were almost as bad as the one shipped to me. I believe it is a fundamental flaw with the 15 degree tilt of the motor.
