This exactly. If I spend this much on a grinder, I want it to be well designed, worked out. A bellows just makes it seem that they couldn't get it working any other way. Niche managed it years ago and it's disappointing that no other similarly-priced grinder managed to replicate this feat even now. I'm looking to upgrade to a Niche, unless I decide to "skip" the Niche and go straight to even higher priced grinders like the P64 or maybe the upcoming Acaia Orbit. Neither of which uses freaking bellows.
That’s the thing about the Eureka. They make great grinders but suddenly once the price becomes as high as the Oro it’s not worth it anymore. I bought a Mignon Zero (Basically a Specialita without the touch screen) and I think it’s absolutely worth the $340 I paid for, but $800 for the Oro??? Seriously??
In the EU, the Mignon is about $200 cheaper all costs and taxes includes and it's also comes with a 3 year EU warranty from a reputable company. NZ warranty is next to impossible to enforce outside the UK and at the end of the day is a one-man operation. Given that the price situation is the opposite for you, what would you recommend to a EU buyer? Would honestly really appreciate your input.
That focus pull with switch of grinder ❤ I have the old smaller Eureka Mignon 2017 version, and I removed the hopper, and instead have a single dose setup. A wood block and a metal pipe, which just fit one dose. To prevent "pop corning" I always put my little shot glass on top of the metal pipe when grinding. Anyway, with the removal of all plastic hopper parts and cumbersome metal gate/valve, almost all problem with static fines, and chaff disappeared !
I always appreciate your fair and honest take on all things coffee. I've enjoyed mine over the last month and it's good to know that although mine came missing the bellows out of the box, I'm not missing much.
Sound pressure in dB (A) is usually measured in a free field, where no reflections whatsoever occur. In many cases the measuring distance is 1 m from the source. This might explain the much higher noise pressure in your room. I'd be geniunely curious what results you'd get if you test it e. g. in your garden or something like that.
still, the Niche is more quiet head to head with the Single dose. and by the way, the Eureka specialita is also more quiet than the Single dose (about the same as the Niche) but having said that, owning the Single dose for a month now, I don't have problems with its loudness.
Thanks for the comparison and your thoughts. I recently purchased a Mignon Facile. Basically this is the Silencio without the timer. At $349 US the value is apparent. 50mm burrs get the job done. With a couple of mods I've cot a very capable workhorse. I got a single dose hopper with bellows and an adjustment ring that solves the multiple turns of the adjustment dial. Just over $400 total investment and this little guy punches with the big boys.
Look wise eureka is much better. Also, espresso lovers will love wider range of adjustments in eureka. 65mm burr size is steal at eureka price. I have rancilio whose adjustments falls short for espresso (just 2 clicks) and niche seems similar. I had to buy rocket faucito that is similar to eureka in adjustments but with 50mm burr and cost me more than eureka. Also, seems like you got flat burr vs conical other way round. Everyone agrees that flat is for espresso and conical for pour over.
You have to close the metal lid before pushing from the top to get the whole retention out. By doing so, I have always a retetntion that is limited to 0.2 grams. Without the lid closed the air can escape through the lid opening.
@@Sprometheus I agree completely. Why Eureka doesn’t make a better adjustment is beyond me. It works fine for dialing around a specific grind, but to switch between espresso and say drip requires the user to keep track of the dial’s revolutions which overly complicates the process. This line of Eureka’s grinders would be better marketed as espresso only. You do a great job with your variety of content. One question: do you still use the Bplus puck screen or have you given up on it? I used it for several months, but have set it aside to have one less step. I loved how it kept the dispersion screen and group head clean, but I’m very conscientious of keeping the LM clean anyway. I think it made the extractions more consistent, but am back trying to use the LM as it was originally designed.

@@Timberjagi No, why do people get this wrong? WHEN YOU EXPORT from UK you do not add VAT. Niche keeps price the same, so you pay extra 80 pounds. Even if you have no VAT yourself you still paid 500 pounds for something that niche priced at 420 pounds.
My Eureka Mignon Oro Single Dose Grinder was that noisy and vibrated so much I had to send it back to the Dealer after 3 weeks of use. I believe this is a major design flaw in this Grinder and Eureka should have a recall on them and sort this problem out. Also I found the rubber bellows get softer after the 3 week period I had it to a point where it just fell off the plastic hopper when you touched it or removed and refitted the cheaply made wooden lid. Also had a lot of static even though I was advised by the Eureka Dealer not to RDT the beans. Also found the retention quantity very hit and miss like you mentioned. This Grinder definitely doesn't meet the 'Oro' badge.
I am in the market for a new grinder and was thinking either a Niche, Eureka or Ceado E5SD. Then my favourite coffee content creator suddenly creates a comparison video, what perfect timing! Thanks for your videos, they are really appreciated and I look forward to them every week!
I have one of these. It's great. Granted,t he adjustment dial was pretty confusing to find zero in the first place, but once I got it, it's easy enough to adjust. I only use it for espresso so it's not a big problem. And it grinds beautifully. So far, I get literally zero retention. I thought the bellows wasn't working, but there just weren't any grounds left inside- the output weighs as much as the input.
While I don't know about other regions then Europe however I gave up on ever considering getting a Niche Zero. It's simply not worth it since brexit happened. As far as I understand they would have to do some extra paperwork in order to get rid of it however in short if e. g. I purchase a Niche Zero it costs around 600€ plus shipping which includes 20% UK VAT, after it arrives I'd have to import it meaning it would be an additional 22% VAT plus other expenses, compared to from what I saw this Eureka costing 500€ plus shipping is pretty much a no brainer for me. Then again that would be the case of buying those two in Europe.
yup, such a headache, I live in Italy, and I want a good grinder, I would be happy to buy NZ, but it's just so much money spent on taxes... currently looking for something else, but it's just so sad
I own a Mignon XL. If I was single dosing, I'd still easily, easily choose the Niche. If I was Eureka I would've simply marketed that single dosing isn't the only way to grind or even the best way and battled it out that way.
Just unboxed my Niche Zero and had our 1st shots. Noticeable difference to my Breville Barista Express grinder!! I did not expect that. Grind Look and coffee taste. In Canada so not cheap. With shipping and customs. I’ve a $1000 CAD. Yikes. I was tempted to get the Niche Duo. But $2000 CAD or there abouts. It is quiet. Looks great. Easy to use. Very sexy But $1000+!!!!!! Ah well. You can’t take it with you. Lol The grinder or the $$😊

Yeah I ran it both ways, I found it inconsistent all the way around, though more grinds came out when grinding coarser, but often it would be the retained grinds from the last batch on top of what I put in. I mean, in the end 0-.5grams isn’t terrible, especially when compared to most grinders before the single dosing era, but compared to the Niche I just falls short. Haha and thank you, I actually double checked the pronunciation before I filmed just to be sure. Thanks again for watching and for great comment.
I had both. Italian made I chose all day. Much easier to clean and taste and dialing in not hard if you used a manual grinder. It’s good you show pour over. Many others can’t seem to get that right or might just try to come across an expert.
Could you clarify your view on the difference between flat and conical burrs. You seem to be giving the exact opposite descriptions here and your earlier video on flats vs. conical. Which do you believe deliver more of the deeper chocolatey notes, and which bring out more of the brighter acidic notes?

I agree with your nitpicking points! But the turn dial is a huge one for me. I switch between espresso and pour overs pretty much daily and between 2-3 coffees. The NZ turn dial is lifesaver. It’s a shame it hasn’t been living up to the hype yet in the reviews. Any idea how the eureka compares to the new baratza w+?
But having flat burrs certainly sets Eureka apart. The reason I never attempted to get a Niche was cause of the conical burrs, it just isn't appealing to someone who already uses manual grinders.
Watching Kyle’s video, I’ve concluded the Mignon single dose falls prey to the same issue as the Notte that I have, as you put it with the inconsistent outputs. I get that with my Notte with a single dose hopper and bellow. The clump guard seems to be the culprit. And, my solution has been to stick a brush up the chute and give a few bumps on the guard and a few puffs from the bellows again. Now I’m consistently having 0.1g or less retention each time
If you order the mignon from italy directly it is about a 90USD cheaper than the niche and I believe the availability issues are more to do with vendors and not output. I got a Eureka Mignon Specialista bc I do not plan on switching beans or brew methods in between bags so I enjoy the hopper. And I never drink straight espresso so I dont get the benefit of the increased texture from the conical burrs.
I'm currently ready to push the button on a grinder upgrade from my Sage/Breville dose control pro. I'm leaning toward the Eureka Mignon Specialita which in the UK is about £400 both the Niche zero and the Mignon single dose are about £500 here in the UK and have quite a wait with them. At present I don't single dose and I'm fairly lazy so don't know if it's something I'd enjoy. In your opinion do you think the Specialita is a solid choice for me and is there an alternative option you'd recommend? Thanks in advance for you input
The thing that bugged me most about my Oro SD is that it comes with the bellows, but mine always was clogged up, the bellows didn't work, apparently they may be coming out with a fix for that. It's also a lot louder than the Specialita, which was relatively quiet, I thought higher end Eurekas are generally MORE quiet. Eureka Atom series has a ridiculous 800w motor and it's super quiet. I think if you want a Flat Burr Niche Zero, the Lagom P64 IS that, it's a lot more expensive though. The budget option of course is the P64's knock-off the DF64, which is a great for the price. The Niche in Canada is about the same Price as the Oro SD, I'd take the Niche for sure.
@@bogdanadzic9305 never had them both at the same time but I remember the taste profile being similar but oro SD is much better for retention. 2nd edition is better than the first but bellows doesn't seem to work.

It's pretty amazing what Niche Zero has done, being a no name start up, ending up having the quality and popularity it does. Eureka certainly seemed to take its time coming out with a competing product and yet still it seems like they rushed and cut corners where it counts. Niche was built from scratch with the purpose of being a nice quiet, easy to use low retention single dosing grinder, and Eureka basically took parts from their other grinders and made a frankengrinder.
I love this review. To be a Niche killer, any grinder shall not need the use of a bellow to challenge the Niche. Blowing a grinder to clean it is simply a crutch for a poor design grinder. Nothing else.
@@JCleggy Never said that. Any flat burr grinder not needing a crutch to get zéro rétention is a serious competitor. Useless to blow air in the Niche zéro. This makes the Niche so easy to use.
Interesting review! My Eureka Mignon Single Dose is making too much fine particles. Not sure if that is normal but filter coffee grinding is impossible, filter gets clogged in seconds.
I’ve been debating between the niche and the baratza Vario w + myself. They’re both the same cost, but I wonder if anyone has anything to say about them. I’m upgrading from the baratza encore
the baratza come all in an ugly looking plastic enclosure. in terms of design, it‘s no question to choose the niche over a baratza. also the baratzas sound cheap and they are nowhere close to zero retention.
From my experience, owning both grinders, honestly I can't decide which I like more for espresso. Eureka SD is simply, for me, the best looking SD grinder in the price range, which is subjective of course. On the other hand, NZ is so so so easy to use and I kinda can sometimes feel the physical need to push the switch and listen the grinding. I tried both grinders for V60 but from my taste preference, they are far away in a bad direction when compared with Comandante or other good manual grinders or some other expensive big flat burrs in specialty coffee shops grinders.
I've owned my Niche Zero for about 2 years. I think it's quite astonishing that an inventor like Martin Nicholson saw a need in the coffee market for a single-dose grinder--a need apparently overlooked by almost everyone else. Then he goes on to design and bring to market a game-changing grinder. I'm amazed at how solid and well-built my NZ is. No skimping on any of the materials, as far as I can see. The NZ results in a great espresso. Also, it's very easy to clean and calibrate. I think the high quality of the product justifies the price.
People criticize the motor power on the niche and mention it's a cheap part but o don't think it's really an issue unless it has reliability issues but in years I haven't heard many complaints about them failing. And if it is a cheap motor the pro of that is the replacement should also be affordable.
I've only had my personal Niche for a short time, but the one we have at work for decaf/one-off espresso has been with us for 2 years now, and it has remained shockingly consistent, even through multiple cleanings and many, many rushes. On Fridays my cafe has open mic night, so it's been important to have a relatively quiet grinder. Before the Niche, we had a Baratza Sette and that thing drove me batshit with how awful sounding it was, never mind how loud.
Interesting that you hate the bellows on this grinder. I've been using a rubber baby sputum cup as an improvised bellows to purge my "zero retention" Niche Zero, so I was really jealous of that particular feature until you dunked on it. Thanks for alleviating my FOMO 😂
I use that same sputum cup to purge my NZ. I think it's a pretty popular hack. I actually prefer using that cup to the look of an attached bellows, which I find quite ugly.
These reviews are really helpful, it is great to see how the breed is evolving, thank you! The bellows work really really well on my Rancilio MD80... (Repurposed from a cake decorating kit by OXO) By borrowing the NZ ideas, I have significantly reduced retention(20.0gr in and out, day in, day out), vastly improved my workflow and been able to extend the interval between subsquent grinder teardowns for cleaning. As a Maker, I am compelled to improve the equipment I have :) The same cortado glass which serves as a dosing cup also fits on top of the grinder, thus no pop-cornimg issues :) Thanks again for your videos!
Your comment on the burr type (conical vs flat) went completely against what I’ve seen on other videos (while latte love, Seattle coffee gear). I’m just getting into espresso and was looking at eureka but it’s almost as if this single dozer for eureka was older, I see the vid is a year old. Any changes in your opinion with some of the newer SD eureka products ? Oro, zero? I would consider the niche but I’m not waiting months for a grinder. WLL has the entire eureka and ceado line in stock now.
Thanks for your honest thoughts. I have been looking at the Niche from time to time, but to me it is just a bit too expensive. In Europe it is about 150 USD more than the Eureka Single dose.

Here in Germany/the EU, the Eureka is far cheaper, the Niche costs us people from "old Europe" around 800 € including shipment, tax and fees, the Eureka is currently available on a German website for about 600 €. Probably because of the *no-Deal*-Brexit 😉. No wonder the UK didn't want to belong to the EU anymore, they seem to lean more towards the US. But the Niche is definitely not an option for me ☹️.
Have you experienced that on the niche zero, when doing pour overs, that you need to dial past the 50 mark? It seems that my pour overs are still a bit slow when grind size is set to 50, thus still requiring a courser grind size. Thanks!!!
@@Sprometheus That's almost exactly where my Niche and the one we use at work falls for the same brew methods, too. I find 45 for a Chemex does us pretty well for the roast level we have, drawing down in ~4.5 minutes.
Wow I’m glad I found this review. I’m looking for an upgrade from my baratza sette 30 because it’s too loud and that decibel reading you had was reaching 90 decibel? My setter 30 is just around 85 decibel using the same app. Very interesting.
Different phones with different mics will probably affect the results as well, those aren't really so accurate. From what I've heard the Sette is super loud, I haven't heard them in person, but I think the Oro SD is PRETTY Loud, definitely louder than it should be when they claim it's 'quiet'. The Specialita I had was much quieter, Niche Zero also much quieter.

@@plorwax I think you'll be happy with either. Niche or Specialita. They're both about the same loudness maybe Niche is a bit quieter. Niche is easier to switch between brew methods but both are best performing in espresso range really.
I think this is just the tip of the iceberg but my money is on the 64mm burr machine bracket really hotting up after the release of the DF64. I'm gonna keep running my Sette 230 and wait to see how this shakes out, but my next upgrade is to a 64mm machine so I can get those SSP burrs, I cannot stand Eureka's adjustment knob, so that's a big fat no on that for me.
Yeah I think it’s smart for manufacturers to make grinders that fit upgraded burr options like SSPs. The option for that will sell far more grinders. If only the Niche made their machine around the available conical sizes from SSP and you’d be off to the races.

@@Sprometheus I hate the grinds dial. Going from espresso to pour over and landing on the same settings will be a lot more of a chore. Also getting the last of the grinds out of Niche is so simple and the hopper and the blow up system look to be a pain. Now if the Eureka grinder could be used with and without hopper…
@@jules5350 I think they claim it can be used without the hopper, they told me it's only about 0.3g retention which WOULD be fine, but in my testing the bellows gets out about 1g on mine. Maybe only half of that is actually exchanged. The Specialita I had with a bellows pumped out a max of 2G so it's worse there, but only about 0.8g was exchanged and I didn't find it really affected much. Grinders without bellows seem to give you a more consistent dose in and out I think, or at least it worked that way with my Specialita.
I have a Filtro, and it has even smaller adjustments. I really don't see this as an issue. It's literally one turn to go from espresso to filter on it. And with such a small knob, it's easy to do. Previous grinders have had Niche or DF64 style adjustments, so I was a bit worried when I got the Filtro because of all the hubbubb on the internet about it. After a year... it's really not an issue. Not even an issue to *overlook* imo. And you should have seen the adjustments on my Ascaso I had a couple of years ago. Espresso range over three turns. That said, I think this iteration of the Oro is too expensive.
Agree with your comments in the comparison. I feel I should avoid grinders with bellow system since it can make a mess. Having said that this Eureka doesn’t seem too bad.
I’d say the bellow would work a lot better had it made a better seal. But due to the small open areas on the hopper (where the gate opens and closed) it tends to kick out chaff and some grinds all over.
Your end comments about conical and flat is exactly the same as my opinion: I do Niche for espresso and Ode/SSP for filter. Of course I could do either with either, but as I can, I do.
For stubbornness reason I avoid things made in China. Unfortunately that’s the case for the Niche. I was hoping this grinder would be closer comparatively. The loudness was a deal breaker for me and I ended up getting a Magnifico because all their grinders should soon be able to take a single dose hopper. I’ll take a quiet grinder even if i miss out on a… lean?
I've seen someone post that result, mine wasn't so bad, but there's definitely better burr sets for pour over / brew coffee, Eureka burrs generally seem to be more classic espresso oriented. Not high clarity / unimodal style (which isn't always what you want depending on your taste and coffee preferences).
I had the Eureka for month now. I don't know why, but retention seems to have a lot to do with the beans. On some beans, the output is either right on or off by 0.1 grams. Not a big deal. For other beans, the retention could be 0.5grams UNTIL I use the RDT then that seems to bring those beans back in line. I haven't heard a good explanation for this. Ideas anyone? User Error? As far as noise, it is a bit louder than their Specialita, but so much quicker that sort of cancels it out.
Hey. I have been using the Barista Express with grinder for 3 years now. Great easy unit. Just got my dream Niche Zero. 1st shots today. Wow. Just wow. Noticeable difference in grind look and coffee taste. I did not expect that. If paying a LOT for a slightly (significant to me but let’s be real) better shot is worth it for you, then you will see and taste a difference.
from a purely cosmetic point, the Niche was obviously designed to lean, where as it's equally obvious the Mignon is a vertical machine sitting on a wedge. they didn't even try to hide the join. you could take any other Mignon and stick a lump of wood under the back to achieve the same.
I have to chuckle at the gyrations people go through to convert a perfectly adequate hopper grinder to a single doser. This may make the owner feel all grown up and sophisticated but it is unnecessary time and expense. I have a Specialita, among several others, feeding a Marzocco GS/3 so this is not my first rodeo. When I grind with the Specialita, I weigh my dose, dump it in the empty hopper and go. This works every bit as well as one or another of the jury rigs that folks hang on their Mignons. Unless your life feels empty and meaningless without a chaff blower, forget the bellows for exactly the reasons stated in this video. There are so many relevant variables involved in making good espresso that it is silly, in my not-terribly-humble opinion, to waste time and money on trivia.
In the UK the niche isn't much more expensive if you can get one. As I need to switch between cafetierre and espresso. I think the grind dial has written this one off for me. I know the rest of my family isn't going to care to note how many turns or return it to espresso. Shame I had high hopes!
yes that is because they call the same price regardless of VAT for national and international customers. So non-UK customers pay extra... At least they finally got away from their Kickstarter distribution model which was a big no-no for me. I got another Mignon grinder a year ago and never looked back. In my opinion you don't need the extra 'leaning' feature, my grind retention is also between zero and 0.5 grams, also without using bellows.
shame that neither this nor the df64 seem to quite match the niche, but given my choice is playing the lottery and waiting many months and paying overseas shipping or paying twice as much as the mignon (local retailers asking for $1300 USD for it)
I just bought a Faustino and decided I will waste a half a gram of coffee. I was willing to wait months for a Niche, but the conical burs threw me off. Cafe's use flat burs. I want to have a machine with flat burs. Even so I was considering it until I learned the Niche's manufacture is in China. I know everything comes from China these days but I have a fundamental problem with buying a product that goes on a boat twice...
Not all cafes use flat burrs, some of the more popular grinders are flat because they are faster for service, but there are plenty that use conical. In terms of where things are built and all that, I can appreciate the sentiment, but I think it’s likely impossible to find something that hasn’t hit a boat, plane, train, or truck multiple times.

Globalization is here to stay but for some reason a boat ride from Europe feels different than a boat ride from China.
Nah, I don't like that I can't do a hot start on a Niche or a slow feed. Mignon can do those two things easily. I definitely do not like the autostart with the lid. The pro he gave are pretty much my cons haha also, I think the opposite of conic and flat burrs regarding espresso and pour overs haha shows you that there's a ton of subjectivity in this business.
DF64 is more a knock off of the Option-O Lagom P64. I don't believe Eureka has had any other grinders before with the Wood accents and dosing cup, or tilt. Seems obviously Niche Zero Inspired.

But to muse about patent infringement seems absolutely absurd. That was really my point. They still visually look very different to me and certainly are very different on the inside as well.
Ignorance is bliss, but sometimes I have the idea that it shouldn't be too hard to create a 'budget' grinder at this pointthat ticks all the boxes. It feels like we're in a place with so mucb knowledge that it's a matter of who's investing to take the crown. Thought mignon would have the infrastructure to do so and crush competition but sadly not true. My brain is grinding for sure

I bought a Mignon Zero (Basically a Specialita without the touch screen) and I think it’s absolutely worth the $340 I paid for, but $800 for the Oro??? Seriously??
In the EU, the Mignon is about $200 cheaper all costs and taxes includes and it's also comes with a 3 year EU warranty from a reputable company. NZ warranty is next to impossible to enforce outside the UK and at the end of the day is a one-man operation. Given that the price situation is the opposite for you, what would you recommend to a EU buyer? Would honestly really appreciate your input.

I have the old smaller Eureka Mignon 2017 version, and I removed the hopper, and instead have a single dose setup.
A wood block and a metal pipe, which just fit one dose. To prevent "pop corning" I always put my little shot glass on top of the metal pipe when grinding.
Anyway, with the removal of all plastic hopper parts and cumbersome metal gate/valve, almost all problem with static fines, and chaff disappeared !
I always appreciate your fair and honest take on all things coffee. I've enjoyed mine over the last month and it's good to know that although mine came missing the bellows out of the box, I'm not missing much.

I have a silenzio modded for single dose and bellows. Literally half the price with basically the same performance.

Hows much retention do you get? is is consistent or not?
Sound pressure in dB (A) is usually measured in a free field, where no reflections whatsoever occur. In many cases the measuring distance is 1 m from the source. This might explain the much higher noise pressure in your room. I'd be geniunely curious what results you'd get if you test it e. g. in your garden or something like that.
still, the Niche is more quiet head to head with the Single dose. and by the way, the Eureka specialita is also more quiet than the Single dose (about the same as the Niche) but having said that, owning the Single dose for a month now, I don't have problems with its loudness.
All else being equal between grinders, his measurements should still be an indication of which is better.
Also, more important, I recommend stop using these apps as a refer point.

I recently purchased a Mignon Facile. Basically this is the Silencio without the timer. At $349 US the value is apparent. 50mm burrs get the job done. With a couple of mods I've cot a very capable workhorse. I got a single dose hopper with bellows and an adjustment ring that solves the multiple turns of the adjustment dial. Just over $400 total investment and this little guy punches with the big boys.
Look wise eureka is much better. Also, espresso lovers will love wider range of adjustments in eureka. 65mm burr size is steal at eureka price. I have rancilio whose adjustments falls short for espresso (just 2 clicks) and niche seems similar. I had to buy rocket faucito that is similar to eureka in adjustments but with 50mm burr and cost me more than eureka.
Also, seems like you got flat burr vs conical other way round. Everyone agrees that flat is for espresso and conical for pour over.
Bigger flat burrs are better than conical
You have to close the metal lid before pushing from the top to get the whole retention out. By doing so, I have always a retetntion that is limited to 0.2 grams. Without the lid closed the air can escape through the lid opening.
Have used the Eureka Specialita dedicated to my LMLM. Am very happy with its performance as an espresso grinder and can see no reason to switch.
I think it works fine as either, but not great at switching. It’s best suited to just one brew method.
@@Sprometheus I agree completely. Why Eureka doesn’t make a better adjustment is beyond me. It works fine for dialing around a specific grind, but to switch between espresso and say drip requires the user to keep track of the dial’s revolutions which overly complicates the process. This line of Eureka’s grinders would be better marketed as espresso only. You do a great job with your variety of content. One question: do you still use the Bplus puck screen or have you given up on it? I used it for several months, but have set it aside to have one less step. I loved how it kept the dispersion screen and group head clean, but I’m very conscientious of keeping the LM clean anyway. I think it made the extractions more consistent, but am back trying to use the LM as it was originally designed.
TBH that small grinder, Niche Zero, is an one hell of a grinder. It is the epitome of the product that nails the customer's needs.

@@Timberjagi No, why do people get this wrong? WHEN YOU EXPORT from UK you do not add VAT. Niche keeps price the same, so you pay extra 80 pounds. Even if you have no VAT yourself you still paid 500 pounds for something that niche priced at 420 pounds.
My Eureka Mignon Oro Single Dose Grinder was that noisy and vibrated so much I had to send it back to the Dealer after 3 weeks of use. I believe this is a major design flaw in this Grinder and Eureka should have a recall on them and sort this problem out. Also I found the rubber bellows get softer after the 3 week period I had it to a point where it just fell off the plastic hopper when you touched it or removed and refitted the cheaply made wooden lid. Also had a lot of static even though I was advised by the Eureka Dealer not to RDT the beans. Also found the retention quantity very hit and miss like you mentioned. This Grinder definitely doesn't meet the 'Oro' badge.
I am in the market for a new grinder and was thinking either a Niche, Eureka or Ceado E5SD. Then my favourite coffee content creator suddenly creates a comparison video, what perfect timing! Thanks for your videos, they are really appreciated and I look forward to them every week!
I have one of these. It's great. Granted,t he adjustment dial was pretty confusing to find zero in the first place, but once I got it, it's easy enough to adjust. I only use it for espresso so it's not a big problem. And it grinds beautifully. So far, I get literally zero retention. I thought the bellows wasn't working, but there just weren't any grounds left inside- the output weighs as much as the input.
While I don't know about other regions then Europe however I gave up on ever considering getting a Niche Zero. It's simply not worth it since brexit happened. As far as I understand they would have to do some extra paperwork in order to get rid of it however in short if e. g. I purchase a Niche Zero it costs around 600€ plus shipping which includes 20% UK VAT, after it arrives I'd have to import it meaning it would be an additional 22% VAT plus other expenses, compared to from what I saw this Eureka costing 500€ plus shipping is pretty much a no brainer for me. Then again that would be the case of buying those two in Europe.
yup, such a headache, I live in Italy, and I want a good grinder, I would be happy to buy NZ, but it's just so much money spent on taxes... currently looking for something else, but it's just so sad
I own a Mignon XL. If I was single dosing, I'd still easily, easily choose the Niche. If I was Eureka I would've simply marketed that single dosing isn't the only way to grind or even the best way and battled it out that way.
Just unboxed my Niche Zero and had our 1st shots. Noticeable difference to my Breville Barista Express grinder!! I did not expect that. Grind Look and coffee taste.
In Canada so not cheap. With shipping and customs. I’ve a $1000 CAD. Yikes. I was tempted to get the Niche Duo. But $2000 CAD or there abouts.
It is quiet. Looks great. Easy to use. Very sexy

Yeah I ran it both ways, I found it inconsistent all the way around, though more grinds came out when grinding coarser, but often it would be the retained grinds from the last batch on top of what I put in. I mean, in the end 0-.5grams isn’t terrible, especially when compared to most grinders before the single dosing era, but compared to the Niche I just falls short.

I had both. Italian made I chose all day. Much easier to clean and taste and dialing in not hard if you used a manual grinder. It’s good you show pour over. Many others can’t seem to get that right or might just try to come across an expert.

Could you clarify your view on the difference between flat and conical burrs. You seem to be giving the exact opposite descriptions here and your earlier video on flats vs. conical. Which do you believe deliver more of the deeper chocolatey notes, and which bring out more of the brighter acidic notes?

I agree with your nitpicking points! But the turn dial is a huge one for me. I switch between espresso and pour overs pretty much daily and between 2-3 coffees. The NZ turn dial is lifesaver. It’s a shame it hasn’t been living up to the hype yet in the reviews. Any idea how the eureka compares to the new baratza w+?

But having flat burrs certainly sets Eureka apart. The reason I never attempted to get a Niche was cause of the conical burrs, it just isn't appealing to someone who already uses manual grinders.
Watching Kyle’s video, I’ve concluded the Mignon single dose falls prey to the same issue as the Notte that I have, as you put it with the inconsistent outputs. I get that with my Notte with a single dose hopper and bellow. The clump guard seems to be the culprit. And, my solution has been to stick a brush up the chute and give a few bumps on the guard and a few puffs from the bellows again. Now I’m consistently having 0.1g or less retention each time

If you order the mignon from italy directly it is about a 90USD cheaper than the niche and I believe the availability issues are more to do with vendors and not output.
I got a Eureka Mignon Specialista bc I do not plan on switching beans or brew methods in between bags so I enjoy the hopper. And I never drink straight espresso so I dont get the benefit of the increased texture from the conical burrs.
I'm currently ready to push the button on a grinder upgrade from my Sage/Breville dose control pro. I'm leaning toward the Eureka Mignon Specialita which in the UK is about £400 both the Niche zero and the Mignon single dose are about £500 here in the UK and have quite a wait with them. At present I don't single dose and I'm fairly lazy so don't know if it's something I'd enjoy. In your opinion do you think the Specialita is a solid choice for me and is there an alternative option you'd recommend? Thanks in advance for you input
The thing that bugged me most about my Oro SD is that it comes with the bellows, but mine always was clogged up, the bellows didn't work, apparently they may be coming out with a fix for that. It's also a lot louder than the Specialita, which was relatively quiet, I thought higher end Eurekas are generally MORE quiet. Eureka Atom series has a ridiculous 800w motor and it's super quiet. I think if you want a Flat Burr Niche Zero, the Lagom P64 IS that, it's a lot more expensive though. The budget option of course is the P64's knock-off the DF64, which is a great for the price.
The Niche in Canada is about the same Price as the Oro SD, I'd take the Niche for sure.

It's pretty amazing what Niche Zero has done, being a no name start up, ending up having the quality and popularity it does. Eureka certainly seemed to take its time coming out with a competing product and yet still it seems like they rushed and cut corners where it counts. Niche was built from scratch with the purpose of being a nice quiet, easy to use low retention single dosing grinder, and Eureka basically took parts from their other grinders and made a frankengrinder.

I love this review. To be a Niche killer, any grinder shall not need the use of a bellow to challenge the Niche. Blowing a grinder to clean it is simply a crutch for a poor design grinder. Nothing else.

Interesting review! My Eureka Mignon Single Dose is making too much fine particles. Not sure if that is normal but filter coffee grinding is impossible, filter gets clogged in seconds.
I’ve been debating between the niche and the baratza Vario w + myself. They’re both the same cost, but I wonder if anyone has anything to say about them. I’m upgrading from the baratza encore
the baratza come all in an ugly looking plastic enclosure. in terms of design, it‘s no question to choose the niche over a baratza. also the baratzas sound cheap and they are nowhere close to zero retention.
I have both, niche is a much better and higher quality grinder. If you do multiple brew methods niche is great (in cup better at espresso).

From my experience, owning both grinders, honestly I can't decide which I like more for espresso. Eureka SD is simply, for me, the best looking SD grinder in the price range, which is subjective of course. On the other hand, NZ is so so so easy to use and I kinda can sometimes feel the physical need to push the switch and listen the grinding. I tried both grinders for V60 but from my taste preference, they are far away in a bad direction when compared with Comandante or other good manual grinders or some other expensive big flat burrs in specialty coffee shops grinders.
Me staring at my $20 amazon "on special" grinder...."don't worry you work just fine, won't be replacing you any time soon".
I've owned my Niche Zero for about 2 years. I think it's quite astonishing that an inventor like Martin Nicholson saw a need in the coffee market for a single-dose grinder--a need apparently overlooked by almost everyone else. Then he goes on to design and bring to market a game-changing grinder. I'm amazed at how solid and well-built my NZ is. No skimping on any of the materials, as far as I can see. The NZ results in a great espresso. Also, it's very easy to clean and calibrate. I think the high quality of the product justifies the price.
People criticize the motor power on the niche and mention it's a cheap part but o don't think it's really an issue unless it has reliability issues but in years I haven't heard many complaints about them failing. And if it is a cheap motor the pro of that is the replacement should also be affordable.
I've only had my personal Niche for a short time, but the one we have at work for decaf/one-off espresso has been with us for 2 years now, and it has remained shockingly consistent, even through multiple cleanings and many, many rushes. On Fridays my cafe has open mic night, so it's been important to have a relatively quiet grinder. Before the Niche, we had a Baratza Sette and that thing drove me batshit with how awful sounding it was, never mind how loud.
Interesting that you hate the bellows on this grinder. I've been using a rubber baby sputum cup as an improvised bellows to purge my "zero retention" Niche Zero, so I was really jealous of that particular feature until you dunked on it. Thanks for alleviating my FOMO 😂

I use that same sputum cup to purge my NZ. I think it's a pretty popular hack. I actually prefer using that cup to the look of an attached bellows, which I find quite ugly.

The bellows work really really well on my Rancilio MD80... (Repurposed from a cake decorating kit by OXO) By borrowing the NZ ideas, I have significantly reduced retention(20.0gr in and out, day in, day out), vastly improved my workflow and been able to extend the interval between subsquent grinder teardowns for cleaning. As a Maker, I am compelled to improve the equipment I have :)
The same cortado glass which serves as a dosing cup also fits on top of the grinder, thus no pop-cornimg issues :)

Your comment on the burr type (conical vs flat) went completely against what I’ve seen on other videos (while latte love, Seattle coffee gear). I’m just getting into espresso and was looking at eureka but it’s almost as if this single dozer for eureka was older, I see the vid is a year old. Any changes in your opinion with some of the newer SD eureka products ? Oro, zero? I would consider the niche but I’m not waiting months for a grinder. WLL has the entire eureka and ceado line in stock now.
are you using your phone to measure the sound pressure (and if so, expecting a similar result as the advertised value) ?

Niche might still be worth it, it's expensive in Canada too. Eureka Specialita seems like a better grinder than this from my experience.
Here in Germany/the EU, the Eureka is far cheaper, the Niche costs us people from "old Europe" around 800 € including shipment, tax and fees, the Eureka is currently available on a German website for about 600 €. Probably because of the *no-Deal*-Brexit 😉. No wonder the UK didn't want to belong to the EU anymore, they seem to lean more towards the US. But the Niche is definitely not an option for me ☹️.

Have you experienced that on the niche zero, when doing pour overs, that you need to dial past the 50 mark? It seems that my pour overs are still a bit slow when grind size is set to 50, thus still requiring a courser grind size. Thanks!!!
Personally I haven’t, my espresso range tends to be around 15-20, my V60 is 35-40 and my flat bottoms 40-45 and French press from 45+
@@Sprometheus That's almost exactly where my Niche and the one we use at work falls for the same brew methods, too. I find 45 for a Chemex does us pretty well for the roast level we have, drawing down in ~4.5 minutes.
Wow I’m glad I found this review. I’m looking for an upgrade from my baratza sette 30 because it’s too loud and that decibel reading you had was reaching 90 decibel? My setter 30 is just around 85 decibel using the same app. Very interesting.
Different phones with different mics will probably affect the results as well, those aren't really so accurate. From what I've heard the Sette is super loud, I haven't heard them in person, but I think the Oro SD is PRETTY Loud, definitely louder than it should be when they claim it's 'quiet'. The Specialita I had was much quieter, Niche Zero also much quieter.

When you did the Eureka retention test was that with RDT or completely dry?
Dry, in tests like this I’m using it as the manufacturer intended and designed.
Fair enough. I suspect that RDT would lower the inconsistencies in retention, but you’re completely correct in your methodology.
I think this is just the tip of the iceberg but my money is on the 64mm burr machine bracket really hotting up after the release of the DF64. I'm gonna keep running my Sette 230 and wait to see how this shakes out, but my next upgrade is to a 64mm machine so I can get those SSP burrs, I cannot stand Eureka's adjustment knob, so that's a big fat no on that for me.
Yeah I think it’s smart for manufacturers to make grinders that fit upgraded burr options like SSPs. The option for that will sell far more grinders. If only the Niche made their machine around the available conical sizes from SSP and you’d be off to the races.
Whenever they try to make (niche zero) like grinder it always be higher on price and mostly not friendly in use or hard on clean too

Also getting the last of the grinds out of Niche is so simple and the hopper and the blow up system look to be a pain. Now if the Eureka grinder could be used with and without hopper…
@@jules5350 I think they claim it can be used without the hopper, they told me it's only about 0.3g retention which WOULD be fine, but in my testing the bellows gets out about 1g on mine. Maybe only half of that is actually exchanged. The Specialita I had with a bellows pumped out a max of 2G so it's worse there, but only about 0.8g was exchanged and I didn't find it really affected much. Grinders without bellows seem to give you a more consistent dose in and out I think, or at least it worked that way with my Specialita.

I have a Filtro, and it has even smaller adjustments. I really don't see this as an issue. It's literally one turn to go from espresso to filter on it. And with such a small knob, it's easy to do. Previous grinders have had Niche or DF64 style adjustments, so I was a bit worried when I got the Filtro because of all the hubbubb on the internet about it. After a year... it's really not an issue. Not even an issue to *overlook* imo.
And you should have seen the adjustments on my Ascaso I had a couple of years ago. Espresso range over three turns.
That said, I think this iteration of the Oro is too expensive.

Agree with your comments in the comparison. I feel I should avoid grinders with bellow system since it can make a mess. Having said that this Eureka doesn’t seem too bad.
I’d say the bellow would work a lot better had it made a better seal. But due to the small open areas on the hopper (where the gate opens and closed) it tends to kick out chaff and some grinds all over.

Your end comments about conical and flat is exactly the same as my opinion: I do Niche for espresso and Ode/SSP for filter. Of course I could do either with either, but as I can, I do.
For stubbornness reason I avoid things made in China. Unfortunately that’s the case for the Niche. I was hoping this grinder would be closer comparatively. The loudness was a deal breaker for me and I ended up getting a Magnifico because all their grinders should soon be able to take a single dose hopper. I’ll take a quiet grinder even if i miss out on a… lean?
You didn’t experience a lot of fines generating a mud layer on pour-over with Eureka?
I've seen someone post that result, mine wasn't so bad, but there's definitely better burr sets for pour over / brew coffee, Eureka burrs generally seem to be more classic espresso oriented. Not high clarity / unimodal style (which isn't always what you want depending on your taste and coffee preferences).
I had the Eureka for month now. I don't know why, but retention seems to have a lot to do with the beans. On some beans, the output is either right on or off by 0.1 grams. Not a big deal. For other beans, the retention could be 0.5grams UNTIL I use the RDT then that seems to bring those beans back in line. I haven't heard a good explanation for this. Ideas anyone? User Error? As far as noise, it is a bit louder than their Specialita, but so much quicker that sort of cancels it out.
did you always close the metal slider? When I hit 3-5 times very impulsive, i have a very very consistent output.

Not a fan of the adjustment dial on the Mignon. Also, I feel like the bellows is not really creating enough pressure to accomplish anything.
Nothing kills a Niche.
Anything that cost more than a Niche and has an ugly bellow is not a Niche Killer.
You can use it with or without the bellow, but like I mentioned it’s not my favorite feature on any grinder haha

from a purely cosmetic point, the Niche was obviously designed to lean, where as it's equally obvious the Mignon is a vertical machine sitting on a wedge. they didn't even try to hide the join. you could take any other Mignon and stick a lump of wood under the back to achieve the same.

Here in Europe the Eureka is like 150$ cheaper than the Niche.
I have to chuckle at the gyrations people go through to convert a perfectly adequate hopper grinder to a single doser. This may make the owner feel all grown up and sophisticated but it is unnecessary time and expense. I have a Specialita, among several others, feeding a Marzocco GS/3 so this is not my first rodeo. When I grind with the Specialita, I weigh my dose, dump it in the empty hopper and go. This works every bit as well as one or another of the jury rigs that folks hang on their Mignons. Unless your life feels empty and meaningless without a chaff blower, forget the bellows for exactly the reasons stated in this video. There are so many relevant variables involved in making good espresso that it is silly, in my not-terribly-humble opinion, to waste time and money on trivia.
In the UK the niche isn't much more expensive if you can get one. As I need to switch between cafetierre and espresso. I think the grind dial has written this one off for me. I know the rest of my family isn't going to care to note how many turns or return it to espresso. Shame I had high hopes!
yes that is because they call the same price regardless of VAT for national and international customers. So non-UK customers pay extra... At least they finally got away from their Kickstarter distribution model which was a big no-no for me.
I got another Mignon grinder a year ago and never looked back. In my opinion you don't need the extra 'leaning' feature, my grind retention is also between zero and 0.5 grams, also without using bellows.

how can you hate on a good bellows... it literally makes a good machine better.....
shame that neither this nor the df64 seem to quite match the niche, but given my choice is playing the lottery and waiting many months and paying overseas shipping or paying twice as much as the mignon (local retailers asking for $1300 USD for it)

Yes. That's generally where retention is held.
I just bought a Faustino and decided I will waste a half a gram of coffee. I was willing to wait months for a Niche, but the conical burs threw me off. Cafe's use flat burs. I want to have a machine with flat burs. Even so I was considering it until I learned the Niche's manufacture is in China. I know everything comes from China these days but I have a fundamental problem with buying a product that goes on a boat twice...
Not all cafes use flat burrs, some of the more popular grinders are flat because they are faster for service, but there are plenty that use conical.
In terms of where things are built and all that, I can appreciate the sentiment, but I think it’s likely impossible to find something that hasn’t hit a boat, plane, train, or truck multiple times.

Globalization is here to stay but for some reason a boat ride from Europe feels different than a boat ride from China.
Eureka Mignon design is years old. they just tilted it forward. no design infringements here

Bigger better burrs and a much larger AC motor seem like major improvements to me.
Nah, I don't like that I can't do a hot start on a Niche or a slow feed. Mignon can do those two things easily. I definitely do not like the autostart with the lid. The pro he gave are pretty much my cons haha also, I think the opposite of conic and flat burrs regarding espresso and pour overs haha shows you that there's a ton of subjectivity in this business.

I don't get the big look-alike opinion. Except for the tilt, I see absolutely nothing in common. Is the DF64 then also a 'clone' of the Niche?
DF64 is more a knock off of the Option-O Lagom P64. I don't believe Eureka has had any other grinders before with the Wood accents and dosing cup, or tilt. Seems obviously Niche Zero Inspired.

But to muse about patent infringement seems absolutely absurd. That was really my point. They still visually look very different to me and certainly are very different on the inside as well.

Here, in Poland Eureka is minimum $70 cheaper than Niche and it's available locally, Niche needs to be imported.

Ignorance is bliss, but sometimes I have the idea that it shouldn't be too hard to create a 'budget' grinder at this pointthat ticks all the boxes. It feels like we're in a place with so mucb knowledge that it's a matter of who's investing to take the crown.
Thought mignon would have the infrastructure to do so and crush competition but sadly not true.
