Klark Teknik KT-2A Review | Who is It For What Are The Features Is It The Best LA-2A Clone

- In this review of the Klark Teknik KT-2A I explore the differences and highlight the similarities between it and the classic it replicates, the Teletronix LA-2A. The KT-2A is one of the best built pieces of equipment one can purchase. It being the best LA-2A clone is unimportant. The cost is nominal compared to the quality of sound and build you will get. It works well with acoustic and electronic instruments. Although it has a bit of a learning curve for the novice, it is virtually the best compressor for achieving that classic console type sound heard on so many hit records.

Thanks for watching ✌🏽
Have it and love it, awesome review.
Thanks for watching
Great video, just ordered one!
Excellent! Thanks for watching.✌🏾
I like this video. Thanks. Just ordered one.
Hope you enjoy it!
@@WarrenHenry Thanjs mate. I actually love your presentation and, I see from your space that you’re a pro so I’m already interested in your opinion. However, what I really like is your straight to the point style. I’d love to see you make more content - especially gear reviews. Cheers!
This is a fantastic channel 👍
Thank you very much!
Thanks so much Mr.Henry, your the best :-)
Paolo 😀thanks for watching brother 🙏🏾✌🏾
Thanks for the great video!

I have the KT2a with my WA73. I love how the combo sounds when the 2a is inserted in the middle of the 73's signal path. It also sounds great and extra creamy when it's not used as an insert. WA73 >KT2a>DAW yields some really creamy results!
Couldn't agree more! Thanks for watching
That’s interesting, how do you route it to be in the middle of the 73?
@@OriShlez You come out of the 73's "insert send" and go into the kt2a's "input", then come out of the kt2a's "output" and go into the 73's "insert return". You may have to have the insert button pressed on the 73's front pannel aswell. I havn't done it in a while, but thats how you do it.
@@OriShlez They also recomend TS cables for this on the warm audio product review video
Freaking love the KT PULTEC.
Thanks for watching
Awesome !

Got mines✊🏾
Hello.
The pre-emphasis when is turned counterclockwise on KT2A shouldnt work like a high pass filter and make compressor to react more on the highs?
In the product manual is written the opposite...🤔
That’s weird. The pre emphasis is supposed to be off or considered “flat” counter clockwise. I normally don’t use it. Thanks for watching and your comment ✌🏾🙏🏾
Nice
Thx for sharing.
Does it dall the sound or its transparent.
What you put through it you get the same clarity. Thx.
If you overdrive the circuit you get a bit of tube character. Other than that it’s pretty clean. Thanks for watching 🙏🏽
I watched one video where the K T 76 had horrible distortion....did you find this also?
Hehe - I can see an old Apogee Rosetta below the monitor.
I still have two of these too - great converter :-)
One of the best ever made. Thanks for watching ✌🏽
If you where putting them inline a single tracking channel strip, would you put the 1176 before or after a LA-2A? Great Video!
Ryan! Thanks for watching. I would more likely put the 1176 before to catch the initial peaks and the LA2A for the color. Thanks for your question✌🏾
@@WarrenHenry That is what I was thinking and really helpful reassurance, I couldn't help myself and picked up the KT-EQP. I think I might put it last in the chain other wise it would over compress the bump in frequencies. Am I thinking about that right? Thanks!
Yessir Ryan you got it right👍🏾 Please, stop by the livestream tomorrow at 6pm EST and introduce yourself
Very valuable info. Thanks for your awesome channel. I just ordered a unit. Can you please look into Alctron MP1073EQ . Its a Chinese made neve clone for about $300. I would like to hear your take on it. Peace!
Hi Ed and thanks for watching. Thanks for your video suggestion. I've been trying to get my hand on the unit as soon as I do I'll report back.
@@WarrenHenry
I'll gladly loan you mine. I'm in NYC. How can I get my unit to you?
@@WarrenHenry
I would also like to add that I plan to modify the unit. Would be interesting to do a before and after
Hey Warren, really great non-comparison ;) I was actually about to purchase a LA 500. I own a Focusrite ISA One and would like to add some more warmth to my vocals when recording. The Klark Teknik KT-2A however is so cheap that I even could get two of them and use it on my mixing bus. What do you think?
Hey, thanks for watching. I would work well on vocals. But, using it on a 2-bus is hit or miss depending on the genre of music because of it's inability to adjust the attack and release times. ✌
@@WarrenHenry Thanks a lot! But what about the LA 500 compared to the KT-2A? The LA 500 seems to be a real great unit. Unfortunately there are no videos out comparing it to the KT-2A... :(
IGS makes great products. I’m only familiar with their Vari-mu stereo compressor though. I’ve gotten out of the comparison wars since doing my video on Warm vs Heritage 😁. I say reach for the best tool that is within your budget. But know this for sure, with all of these clones, all they did is reverse engineer the original design and in the case of the KT2A augment the design with transformers on the input and output. ✌🏽
Hi sir! Quality video again, I tried liking it twice hah! Is this a good compressor for rap? Faster vocals
The key to getting the desired effect out of this compressor is to first know how much gain reduction you want on the source. Extremes on the peak reduction knob will likely have an undesirable effect. If you aim for being in the neighborhood of 1-3 dB of peak reduction on the meter, you can’t go wrong. The results, regardless of vocal tempo, should be the same. Again, the key is keeping an eye on the meter and knowing your desired gain reduction. Thanks for watching ✌🏾🙏🏾
Warren Henry that sounds right! I appreciate it 🙏🏽
Warren is right I track through mines just to tame some peaks 1 to 3 db at most and you will be happy.. enjoy
Yessir and bumping that output gain a bit sweetens it all the more👍🏾 Thanks for watching bro
t3 wayz ok thanks for that input I appreciate it . You have an external pre amp first ? What’s your signal chain
Warren, Do the upgrade to the Black Lion Audio T4BLA Opto Element. It make a WORLD of difference! I hope you'll agree. It sounds literally just like an LA 2A and I know because I had one for 10 years. Worth every penny of the $100 ask.
Brother Johnny thanks for watching and the tip✌🏾👍🏾🙏🏾
I guess many of these clones are really good and may even compress similarly as the originals, BUT what they in most cases miss is the special typical SOUND the originals produced which is also what plugins in most cases can't deliver - since you really need the original tranformers and in the case of LA2A the original opto-converter to achieve this
Thanks for watching. You are 100% correct ✌🏽
@@WarrenHenry The problem is that even the Universal Audio Remakes got enormously expensive in recent years here in Europe and often even can't be purchased at all anymore in Europe. A few years ago the UA Telectronix LA2A still was around 3'000 Euro. Now it's 5'800 Euros which really is completely nuts for a few resistors and valves is a metal box. Luckily the 1176LN still is halfway affordable and it seems to copy the original's character well. The original 1176s got completely unaffordsble. An original blackface in good shape is around $10'000, and the original LA2As even $15'000 and more.
I btw purchased stere pairs of all 3 Klark Teknik clones, so two 76-KT (1176 clone), 2 EQP-KT (Pultec EQP-1A clone) and two KT-2As (still waiting for these - the order was made one year ago, still no delivery) since they were so ridiculously cheap. But I'm very tempted to still get an UA 1176LN since this really is the most versatile and legendary compressor with the original sound which can be used on everything.
I love to track vocals through mine.. my new chain is the tlm102 or the warm wa47 tube mic into a Avalon m5 preamp into the kt2a into my apogee ad da converter into my computer..
I shouldn't have to push the output over -18 to get GR should I?
It depends on what you are compressing and how much GR you want on that signal.
@@WarrenHenry Okay I know you dont need to see the needle moving to hear it working. But same time I shouldnt have to compress at 100 to see 1db of GR.
How would this connect to a Focusrite Clarett 2pre USB, just for vocals?
Larry what’s up brother. You would need to feed an outboard mic pre into the compressor feeding this output into your interface.
After using this compressor is it necessary to use another compressor in the DAW?
Thanks for your question. You can use a second for effect or if you think it is necessary. You would need to be sure that you use a little at each stage though.
@@WarrenHenry THANKS !
Is this good for rap vocals???
Thanks for watching, you would probably Want to try the KT76. The attack and the release time are fully adjustable.
I love your video, but I can’t stop laughing. This is not a comparison video 👍🏻
I wonder what it sounds like 🤷🏻♂️
