    My ART X-15 foot switch has been in use for 30 years. I called them up asking for a power cable for it and they sent it free of charge, 25 years after buying it. It was then that I knew ART was one of the great companies serving the music community. Of course we all grew up on ART multi effects and learned MIDI from them. Here's to many more!

      This makes me happy. I worked at ART here in Rochester, NY from 1990 to 1999. My first product was the X-15; I wrote the software. Looking back, I'd probably do some things a bit differently, and I would have pushed harder for a three-digit LED display. But ART was always about pragmatic products, and that's what I see in this review of the PRO VLA II: Do the best job you can for an affordable price and everyone is happy.

    Compressing on the way in while recording is definitely the way to go. Performance is everything! When bands hear something that sounds like a record in their headphones, they get inspired.

    • @sonicwingnut
      @sonicwingnut 4 года назад +5

      Yeah I'm considering that now, even if for the time being I just run a plugin. I have trouble getting the pitch right with headphones on and I suspect more compressed dynamics on the way in might help a lot when hearing my voice back.

    • @LouisLinggandtheBombs
      @LouisLinggandtheBombs 4 года назад +2

      sonicwingnut Different singers need different things. Some need an 1176 into an LA2A while recording. Others just need reverb on the headphone mix. Others find reverb makes them make even more mistakes!

    • @LouisLinggandtheBombs
      @LouisLinggandtheBombs 4 года назад +10

      sonicwingnut oh a super tip for pitch problems whilst singing is that if the singer is singing too sharp turn down the music in headphones a bit and if she/he is singing too flat, turn the headphone music up a bit. The singer then pushes it a bit more or slacks off a bit. Great trick.

    • @joshmiller5374

      People have gotten too dependent on their mix engineers and are too afraid to commit to sounds in the studio. I’ve always loved processing in the studio and having as little done in the mix as possible. That’s how CLA said American Idiot was done and that’s the highest selling pop punk album of all time

    • @jakobole
      @jakobole 3 года назад +4

      Yes! I can run compression as a monitor-effect only, and the singers I've tracked have all been like..."Dude, my voice sounds like a record already", and it's so much more fun and engaging for them. The results follows.

    I have owned its preamp counterpart for years now. I love the MPA II. i installed some Dr.J ax12s in mine. The best part about it is the ability the impedance match your mic on the way in. Then the balanced line out the back brings the best sound the mic can have with out impedance issues. I am gonna definitely get one of these now. Thanks Glenn!

    I've been using one of these, paired with the MPA II, on room/ambient mics for a while now. Especially with my ribbons (the MPA's variable impedance really comes in handy), I can really boost the gain on the pre and then squash with the VLA for maximum ambient resonance.

      Same, Mid/Side room mikes on drums. Both my MPA II ended up with an insane hum on one channel. When I opened them up I found some of the black diodes were microphonic on the PCB board. Tossed ‘em.

    I bought this a few years back. When I ordered it, I also ordered a pair of Mullards thinking I would no doubt have to upgrade the tubes to squeeze a bit more out of the unit.
    That was 2012. I still haven't put the Mullards in. Haven't needed to. This compressor is truly exceptional for the price. Hell, it's exceptional at two or three times the price. It is extremely transparent and compliments damn near any source you pass through it.
    I think a lot of people buy the ART because it's cheap and wind up keeping it even when they eventually add the 1176, etc next to it.

    Great Review about the advantages of using analogue on input chain! I used to have their 'Voice Channel' tube pre with comp/limit/expander channel strip. The comp was very similar to this one in a sense of 'there but not there'. The pre was ok, kinda weak below a certain point. Would recommend it over overpriced mid-level pres because it gives the Bang-For-Buck.

    I was part of a test for the original Pro VLA before it was released to the public. Was doing a live performance and advised the sound engineers that they were going to get a very hot and properly compressed signal (and that they should not run their compressors for the show). They left them on and I shut down a 10KW sound system twice during the performance. The one we used was a Pre-production unit that ART GAVE the writer (my good friend)...Pro VLA is one of the best tube compressors I've ever used to this day in a studio.

    Man, I have one of those ART Channel strips. I run the tube preamp in the yellow all the time and knock off 4 to 6db with the compressor in optical mode. The EQ section is fine, but usually I just bypass it and EQ in the box.

    The ART PRO VLA II is a solid piece of entry level gear and you can find great deals on used models. I swapped the tubes in mine and I can't notice that big of a sonic difference besides less noise but I only use it for light vocal compression and it does the job well.

    ART is pushing out a lot of good rack units for a low price, defintly worth checking out for the home and smaller recording studio.
    Got a TPS II recently since those I have in my mixer suck for dynamic mic's , plus I can use it as an all purpose Mic preamp on the fly with it's presets, lessens the workflow a bit.
    It doesn't reach the typical tube sound from much more expensive units but it get's the job done.
    Might also get their headphone amp soone or later.

    Another unit worth trying if you haven't already is the Art Pro MPA 2 dual tube preamp. I really enjoyed using it when I did to record electric guitar, bass and drums. The impedance control is your friend, to the degree that it makes for a great DI bass tone-shaper. The only downside is that you don't want to use it on quiet sources because it can get a bit noisy when cranked. I tried it out on room mics and regretted it, which is why you want to use it with loud sources and/or Cloudlifters. Great review as usual, Glenn.

      Micah Lindstrom The input or output levels of the Pro VLA II can be monitored by the analog VU meter. The VU METER switch selects the source of the audio for this meter. The ballistics characteristic of the meter provides an accurate indication of the average signal level. If you need peak level info (critical in digital systems) use the central stereo LED bargraph OUTPUT LEVEL meter.

      A cheap bass that's set up well and in good condition kicks the nuts off a poorly set up/bad condition bass in the £1k bracket. I've just got an active pup'd Ibanez TMB100 for less than £200 and the preamp is very good. Great gigging and recording bass. If you're going for passive pups I'd recommend a Sansamp Bass Driver Deluxe pedal - 100% analogue preamp, great studio and live tool (if you have good monitors). If you're gigging shitty PAs in smaller venues, my Trace Elliot Commando 12" 100W has been unbelievably reliable and versatile in that circuit. Best of luck fellow bassist.

      No shit Sherlock but there’s more than one way to skin a cat...
      I think of cheap as a perspective to what something costs compared to similar functioning pieces of gear. A $300 compressor is cheap compared to a $3,000 one. A $1,000 compressor is cheap compared to a $3,000. Both could also be considered affordable depending on budget.
      When I see something “cheap” in regards to what you said I call it for what it is: a piece of shit. Being “cheap” has nothing to do with what something’s retail price is. Just look at the vast selection of boutique pedal builders there are now charging astronomical prices for unoriginal shit gear you could build better yourself (I’m not talking about the big name guys).
      Again. Semantics. With a dash of perspective and pinch of subjectiveness.

    There was a Mic Preamp shootout in sound on sound a few years back, using the ART Pro MPA 2 , Ams Neve, SSl, API. It was a blind test. The ART came out top. It sounded best to my ears also. After the results were made available, you should have heard all the API, Neve etc users back peddling. Too late! The ART was top. After seeing that I bought the PRO VLAll for my studio, it is my prefered compressor, above my Avalon, Neve and the rest. Use your ears & forget the hype like industry standard. Ok this is not the MIc pre, but you get my point..

    The more I listen to hardware compressors, the more they just sound better to my ears than most plugins. Now, I know that regardless of which option you choose, whether software or any number pieces of hardware, good results can be obtained if you know what you're doing, but for whatever reason the hardware compressors seem to sound more natural and better-suited to the job. It's pretty awesome that a compressor like this is so affordable. I was looking into some of the Warm Audio stuff, which sounds great and is reasonably priced, but this seems like a better choice for someone just getting into the hardware side of things that doesn't want to spend a ton of money. Great bargain.

    This compressor is very cheap and there is many reasons. The electronic design is extremely poor and cheap, seems to be done by advertising office. Few examples why: tubes are there just for marketing and to ruin the sound (they are powered at 40V instead than >200, because no additional high voltage power supply), no ground planes on the board, only electrolytic capacitors (worst sounding on the market) on the audio chain, and no protection resistor on the output so if you connect a mono jack instead of a balanced one you burn one of the two amplifiers driving the output, no bypass capacitor stabilizing the power supply on EVERY operational amplifier inside. Seriously Glenn, on the technical point of view this compressor is rubbish, its value is probably one tenth what they made you pay for. I worked on it for quite a while: excluded tubes, changed every capacitor to non electrolitic, inserted the bypass ones, repaired the broken output amplifier. We chould do a original/modified comparison if and when you want.

      Dood, it's a $300 rack mount tube compressor, what do you expect? Of course they cut corners, but the results aren't as bad as you are painting them. I'd bet a full paycheck that you couldn't differentiate between samples mixed using this compressor and the same samples mixed using a compressor that cost 2X as much. I mean, you probably think you can, but it would be a guessing game for you (and I'm talking about full mixed samples, not just a simple guitar riff).

      @@stevesynan3910That doesn't change the fact that tubes are put there just for tricking you into believing "it's a tube compressor". As I wrote you can't run a tube at 40V hoping the sound to become better, the design would be better without it. Yes! I would be very interested to do a blind test actually! Sadly I didn't took any before/after sample. The one that I modified has been redone for mastering purposes, now it extremely neutral/clear and precise when it is not compressing, when compressing it kept the character of the compression as the circuit driving the vactrol is more or less the same.
