Woodturning Pierced and Hollowed Out Maple Egg

- Taking my piercing skills (that I've just acquired) to the next level, I chose an extra hard project (because why not go big??!), A pierced and hollowed out curly Maple egg. That took me a few good hours, I can tell you that. But I learned my lesson, hollow out before you pierce!! Or not, you might like a good challenge.

Your patience is unbelievable, Yuval. That piece is extraordinary! Great video, my friend. 👍👍👍🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
Safe turning,
.....Gord
Thank you Gord!! I don't think this piece takes more patience then some of your segmenting work. It's just a different type of work, but it's the same patience we put into these.
Yuval
Your voice over was the perfect addition to this project. The cut out designs were so creative. Are you still notified of comments 3 years later?
of course I do, very single one :) and thanks for taking the time to comment!
Yuval
I suppose if you are mad at the world, this would be a good way to calm down. I'll bet it was as soothing as it was frustrating. Whatever causes you to put yourself to the test like this, it's worth it. Very fine work, Yuval! This is an amazing piece.
Phil
Thank you Phil!! Did you notice the sting I sent you in the post text I put out on Facebook...? ;)
Yuval
That is unbelievable. Your patience must be really good. That is so beautiful.
Thank you Suzette!!
Yuval
Very nice, well done. Who the heck could dislike this, we need to hunt them down.
Well, 5 people so far didn't like it, and hey, what can I do? Maybe they didn't like my choice of wood, or maybe the soothing quality of my voice, or the way I chose to tackle this project! People should get a pop up making them explain when the click the thumb down! ;)
Yuval
Just incredible to see it come to be, you are one patient dude. Lovely end result. 👊👊👊
Thanks buddy!! Wait till you see what I'm working on now... ;)

@@yuvallahav you tease 😂😂
This time, to keep it a surprise I didn't publish the process on social media. Trying to spice it up for all the locked down peeps. ;)
@@yuvallahav great idea. I will keep my eyes peeled. How's the family?
Doing well for now, I might kill them all later on. We'll see how it goes.

Patience, that is an understatement. I take my hat off to you. This is a beautiful piece and very delicate. 👏

Fabulous work Yuval, think you got my share of patience,I probably joined the wrong queue!👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍😎
LOL! Thanks Alan! I have to admit, I don't mind at all sitting doing this type of work for even longer. It's like meditation for me, a complete disconnect from the world around me.
Yuval
Awesome work. Very creative...:)
Thanks buddy!

What a job ! I would have been super stressed with such a pice. Especially for sending. It came out very nice and elegant.
Bravo !
Thank you Sylvie! If they will let Italians out of the country once again, I might bring it with me to MC to show off ;)

Great idea 👍
Thanks buddy!! :)
Yuval
Yuval what a magnificent and spectacular egg. I thought that you were going to cut it in half then hollow it out, stick it together again and then make the holes. But the way you did it it just too awesome. Very beautiful
Thanks Kobie! I'm always up for a good challenge :)
Yuval
Beautiful, meticulous work. You have way more patience than I will ever have. Well done!
Thank you Paul!! That patience comes and goes ;)
Yuval
Hello, well that was a labour of love. I was going to ask how you would hollow it out before cutting the pattern, but my question has been addressed in the comments. Thanks for taking the time to show this work of art.Regards Chris.
Thank you Chris! It was indeed a labour of love, my love for staying in my shop while the kids wrack the house. I live in Italy and they closed down all the schools, so now we need to keep the kids busy while we're advised not to leave the house for unnecessary reasons... so shop time it is!
Yuval
High quality craftsmanship

Wow ... having done vases and larger shapes similarly I know that maple is NOT the easiest wood to carve with a dremel. Nice work!

this is amazing buddy. wow happy days 🎺
Thanks Nick!! Good thing that virus came and closed us all up so I could spend so much time in the shop. I only worry that it wouldn't make it an impossibility for me to get to Makers Central come May...

HiYuval thanks for sharing this master piece that is a hel of a lot of work but well werth it in the end well done me friend cheers Ian
Thank you Ian! That sure took some time, but all good things do, don't they? :)
Yuval
Yuval, a very nice piece, like a faberge egg, I think it needs a twisted stand to display it though 😉
Makes me think I need to complete a piece I started a long time ago that needs a lot of refining. ( wild is the wind )
Take care
Rob
Thanks Rob!! I might just do a followup for a stand some day soon. It might be twisted ;) Getting back to old projects is always a good idea, it shows you how much you progressed and you have a new eye for an old thing. Improvements are afoot!!

Nice video. I've not tried this, but I'm wondering if you could use a brad point drill in a pillar drill to remove a lot of material first? But is that what you meant in your comment, hollow out before you pierce? Thanks.
Thank you Peter! This was more of an exercise then anything else, but if I had to make more, I would draw all the shapes before hand, then drill out as much as I can in any point I can insert a drill but, which would make the work much less time consuming.
Yuval
Nice. Thank you.
Not really my taste, but nonetheless pretty and good work! A suggestion: Why not hollow out the egg first? I made some small hollowing scrapers with pieces of bent steel and even an allen key. Works perfectly. Regards
Thank you Hennie! As taste goes, good thing we all differ, or else we would be looking at the same things all the time ;)
I didn't hollow out the egg because I didn't want to create an large entry hole (I don't have small hollowing tools), but next time around I'll just drill everything out from every location using my drill press, to make it all quicker. But I do like the exercise.
Yuval
@@yuvallahav I agree, but very small hollowing tools can be made. Eg. Ellsworth's hollow vases. Anyway, I enjoy your work. Regards.
Yeah, sorry I ignored that in the last comment, I will be making a set of mini hollowers out of Allen keys for small projects in the future.
Yuval
Nice video, Yuval.
The egg looks great.
It's Easter soon.
Where did you buy the tool (the milling cutter, with which you hollowed out the egg and made the holes). :-)
Thanks Gunter!! When I made this I was completely unaware it's Easter soon :)
I got the cutter from the UK: www.woodart-products.co.uk/4_cutters.php

Amazing work Yuval. I was wondering how did you make it empty! Wow.
Thanks Itzik!! It took a lifetime to finish, but with the Corona house arrest (not really) what else can I do? :)

@@yuvallahav 😄☹️😕✌️
Hey, are items like this for sale? I don’t follow super closely but every once in a while something catches my eye and this is stunning. Didn’t see a website or anything linked in description or on Facebook
I don't normally put items up for sale, as turning is only a hobby for me, but I have been known to take a commission every once in a while, when I have time for it. I do it mostly for self exploration, fun, and education for the masses!! :)
Yuval
Yuval Lahav Woodturning thanks for the quick reply. I’ll DM you on Facebook :)
This is really super Yuval. Did you run the bits flat out or control the speed please?
Best Wishes, Brendan.
Thank you Brendan! I ran them at a constant speed, at 8/10 speed on my Dremel. I don't have variable speed control so I can't easily change it while I work so it's too much of a hassle. Go high or go home is my motto of the day!! :)
Yuval
Thanks Yuval.
Hello you use which strawberry for your dremel thank you
I'm sorry Jacques, is seems google has translated your message all wrong, but I think I know what you're asking... this is where I got he cutters from:
www.woodart-products.co.uk/4_cutters.php
Yuval
Great job Yuval. What was your total time to hollow?
Alan
Thank you Alan. Since hollowing and piercing was done as a whole, it took me about 9 hours in total to do it. divided into 5 sittings , I still have a life to take care of, and it won't allow me a 9 hours sitting in my shop, nor do I wish that upon myself ;)
Yuval
@@yuvallahav That exceeds my tolerance.
As I think about it, what do you think of using a drill press? 1) mark out the surface design, 2) clamp and drill deep into the interior staying inside your design. 3) use the piercing tool to refine and finish removing interior wood.
Problems: When clamping, a couple of cup faces to the clamp may help. Would have to stop if the stress became too much for the remaining wood. When drilling, not sure what type of bit would be best: a brad point would have problems hitting voids from previous bores. A Forstner sounds great in theory but may not come small enough to fit the design.
You started me thinking. Would appreciate your reaction.
Alan
I have to admit I've toyed with the idea of drawing the whole design first and then go on with a drill bit and drill as much as I can, but I didn't for a couple of reasons. First it would limit me in the design, if I mess something up later while carving, I have preset holes everywhere so I can't just change the design as I want. The second reason is purely educational, I wanted to see how hard it will be to do it. The thought being that I might want to do a small scale project like this but carve something inside the form instead of just hollowing it out completely. Since I find this work highly meditative and it helps me to cool down, I didn't mind doing it "the hard way". If I ever partake in a similar project and want it completely empty, I would probably drill it out as much as I can (using a metal drill bit).
Yuval
And we thought The Tree was exquisite. It was just a practice piece (not really) compared to this Fine Egg 🎨🏆 The lighted presentation is wonderful, as an added bit of showmanship, eh😃 Did you put any sort of finish on it ? Just so lovely, thank you Yuval 🙏 -Mike
p.s. If you ever want to do another similar egg how about leaving the insides inside carved as a soon-to-hatch chick 🐣😁
Thank you Mike!! :) I didn't put any finish on it, I didn't want to lose the light colour of the wood. And of course the next time I'll do something of the sort I will carve out something out of the inside. Maybe a chick, maybe a baby dragon?? :)
Yuval

I think your worst fear is that someone calls and wants 25 of these.
LOL!! Right now, I could really use the commission!! I'm sure I can devise a way to make these faster if the need arises.... ;)
Yuval
Now I see why one piece of Michael Alguire's work is going for $5K, :-)
LOL! Well, a one piece work is almost always harder to create then a compound piece.
Yuval
@@yuvallahav Sell it for 6000$ then, :-). Make some money.
Joking aside, very nice work on this egg, lot of patience, and stable hands. I did my first wood piercing recently, and not in a scale as yours, yet, I know what is involved, and you did great.
