Yuval Lahav Woodturning you're welcome, thanks, I do find this channel very relaxing - you're very talented, this channel deserves more followers!! 🙂 all the best, Henry
Hi Yuval. Great to see you get into your shop again and the wonders you create, nice job. I think when you create a piece that you yourself are happy with, your talent exceeds your expectation, and fills you with the true joy of turning wood.
Thank you Ed!! You're right, I didn't have much expectations from this project, I thought that after not turning for 5 months everything will be offset, the cuts harsh and violent, but I guess it's more like riding a bike, once I had the spindle gouge in hand, and I put it to wood, it was like I never stopped and everything worked without a hitch... Good feeling for sure. Yuval
Thank you Leona!!! I hope to make quite a few more videos before Makers... Do you know if anything is planned this year like last year, with the coins, which I was not aware of?? I want to come ready this time around... Yuval
Yuval Lahav Woodturning yay looking forward to more videos from you. Only thing I’ve heard of for makers besides the coins (which are happening again) is the maker jenga game. Where each maker brings a handmade giant jenga block. I’ll PM you the measurements
Thank you Daniel! Italy doesn't have Yew as well, but I get it from friend from the UK, and last time I went I got a large batch. It's very hard and turns very well, but you can't thin it out too much as it tends to crack under pressure and/or heat.... Yuval
So good to hear from you buddy!! A simple turning to start this year off, I've been out of the shop (well, I was in it, but I was smoking and not turning...) for so long, now I need to get the brain moving for some new and exciting ideas for 2020... What are the chances you'll make it to Makers Central this year?? I mean, do I need to come and drag your ass from the US???! Yuval
Yuval Lahav Woodturning Sounds like both of us have been doing the same thing 😂 Unfortunately I’m not gonna be able to make it. I’d love to catch up with you again. It’s been a hectic year. Hope all is well on your end brother! 👊❤️
It is about time indeed. Now I hope to keep it up with a new video every week, maybe every couple of weeks. Life and work doesn't always work to give me time... Yuval
So glad you are back in the shop turning again Yuval! I was sad to see you had not filmed anything for a long while. The goblet turned out great, your design came out just like how you intended it to! Its always nice when things go as planned :)
Thank you Mitch!! I'm also sad I didn't have time to turn of late, but it's not for a bad reason. Life and work just got in the way, but I have a few free days now, so I think spending them in shop will be a nice change of pace :) Yuval
Thank you Roger! It's not very easy to turn, it is dense, which makes for good grain support, but it has a plethora of internal cracks that choose to show up as you finish your project. I didn't show it in the video but you can see, before I drill out the center I had to douse the thing in CA to avoid it cracking on me while hollowing... Yuval
Thank you for coming back and still making me feel like the rank amateur that I am. One day I will get to the level where I can show stuff that I have turned that I am very proud of.
LOL Dirk!! :) First of all, you can always show stuff you made and be proud of them, I bet you they are 100% better then anything anyone that doesn't do anything is making ;) I hope to be able to upload move videos now and help you get inspired to improve your skill and art. Yuval
You made a Pineapple! Only, you made so much more! It looks exactly like your drawing and I'm sure it feels great in the hand. Very nice, Yuval! Welcome back! Phil
LOL Phil!! Yeah, it kind of feels like a Pineapple as well ;) It's good to be back among friends, and I hope I'll be doing some more turning in the next few days! Yuval
Thanks Nik!! It was just about time I did... and I hope more time will be spent there in the next few days, I just need to think about what I want to do!! Yuval
An absolute joy to watch ! I love the word 'tactile' in the title and that you set it as a goal. I love to touch my work for probably the same reasons as you. Yew is very hard to get here in Pennsylvania. I think it is one of the best looking woods there is. -Mike
Thank you Mike!! I think our work as wood turners, unless it's high art, should be touched and felt and not just looked at. As for Yew, you can't find it in Italy, where I live, but I do travel to the UK at least once a year and friends over the pond keep me well stocked. It is pretty but with some limits, it's very sensitive to vibrations and to heat, if you try to turn it too thin it will crack right up. Yuval
Thank you Rick!! It's been a while since I had that rare combination of free time and inspiration.. hope to stretch it out for a few more days and a few more videos... Yuval
Great to see you back Yuval! The goblet is lovely and exactly what you set out to make. I’m not a big hand sanding fan so unlikely in my future but who knows. Take care my friend Mark
Thank you Mark!! Not a huge fan myself, but sanding by hand the groves was just a finishing touch that took less then 10 minutes, the rest of the sanding I did on the lathe, the flutes came out really smooth after the carving, I just needed to get rid of a few fussies... Yuval
Hey buddy!! I've seen you posted a couple of new vids, it's a slow day today so I'll be making my way to watch them!! It's good being back in the shop after so long, now I need to get the brain going for new ideas, you know I don't like to do repeat projects... Yuval
You take so much time to get this exactly right. A real craftsman. You should consider building a rose engine lathe - with so much dedication to perfection, you would be a very good ornamental turner. If you are interested, please contact me and I will help guide you.
Thank you Rick!! I thought about building one, a few of my friends did just that, but alas my funds at the moment won't allow me to even buy sanding paper, only things I need to live off. Some day when things get better I will take the time and build one. Although if you have plans for such a DIY project, I would be interested to go over them! Yuval
Beautiful work! I love how it "turned" out. Nice wood choice as well. On a side note, every time you start to speak I think you're about to say "Welcome back to another episode of Mr. Puzzle!" The two of you have very soothing, pleasant voices to compliment your videos. And very similar accents.
Thanks buddy!! I had to look "Mr. Puzzle" and watch one of his videos to know what you're talking about. Man, I don't have a Russian accent!! I have an Israeli accent!! Very different.. maybe not to the untrained ear... ;) Yuval
Lahav doesn't it make sense to hollow first before you took all that support out on the stem? Good example of what i mean is at 9:11 on your video where you can hear te vibration.
Well, I left enough of the stem before I hollowed it, and I prefer not to use the tail stock so viewers could see well what I'm doing, or else I would have used it to reduce vibration. All and all, it didn't explode, so everything worked out ;) Yuval
Thank you Dave!! It sure does, in the end it's the same, only this time, I couldn't bother with calculations, so I just did it (the spacing) by eye... but it all worked out :) In thinking what I want to do, after the long break, I thought about what I enjoyed the most doing in the past, and the hand carving of your vase, and the spiral goblet, was very enjoyable, so I did something of the sort. I want to do more, and take it to more extreme levels... Yuval
Hi Mark, I am in the middle of a big reorganisation so I will fire up a wee video to let you see what's going on.
