Woodturning Ebony Ring and finally buffing!

  • Returning from Makers Central I bought some ring blanks, and breaking a long channel silence, I thought a small and quick project would be just the thing to start creating again.

      Thanks Billy, I usually don't turn rings, but man I'm glad I did ;) It was a fun little project, on the whole these could be done in 20-30 minutes each if you're set up correctly, and It's always a challenge to turn something small or extra delicate. Thanks for watching :)

      Thank you Barry! You should make some. I took one path in making these, the process can be different, I can think of 5 different ways to turn these, and I chose the "hardest" one because I like to show off my tool control ;)

    Great work Yuval you make it look so easy and I know it's not.i got some from Steve and put milliput in them and they turned out ok especially if you mix the colours.they are really good ring blanks too

      Thanks Les! I never worked with milliput, but I see some interesting things done with it... I will have to get to it one day, but last time I checked, they were not shipping to Italy. Some day... :)

    Interesting project Yuval, a very unique way of creating a personal gift. I’d love to give it a try, but my tired old eyes would be more of a hindrance than help.

    Hi Yuval! Beautiful ring my friend, I am sure your wife will love it. Isn't it incredible the difference in density between the sapwood and the hardwood in that ebony? I saw that you had to use CA glue to harden the sapwood. But it was worth the effort since the combination of colors look phenomenal. Cheers! Daniel

    Very nice. I like how you make little chucks for your projects. How did you attaché the buffing wheel to your lathe?

      Thanks Justin! The buffing wheel is attached using a morse cone, or can be grabbed with a chuck. It's a Chestnut buffing system I bought in the last Makers Central.

    Excellent work Yuval as always, could you use a thin cyanoacrylate glue for a finish but don't put the wooden ring onto the metal ring while finishing.

      Thank you Carl! a CA finish will work find, the only problem is my wife is allergic to many things, I wanted the ring to be as chemically clean as possible.

    Hello, I really liked your rings. I would like to know where you can buy blanks for making metal rings? What metal are these blanks made of? I myself am from Kazakhstan, I would like to start making rings. I would be grateful if you answer!

      Thank you Pavel! Sadly the seller of these rings have gone out of buisness, he was from the UK. The rings are made of titanium.

    Great looking ring Yuval, it looks stunning, I need to make one for me since I lost my wedding ring in the Mediterranean sea and my wife's ring is too small for her too.
    But unfortunately sizes they offer are to small for me :(

      Thanks Karol! I think some of the blanks I got were quite large, but then again, you are not a small guy ;) Nothing a hack saw wouldn't fix! (for the ring, not your finger!!).

    Did you glue the ebony to the ring core? I have some cores but the directions have you glue the blank to the core..

      I did not glue it to the core for a few reasons, first and most since I'm still checking other possibilities for making these rings, I might want to reuse that core...

    Sweet !!! The delicate and precise nature of the rings is exactly what I would expect you to tackle. Personally I could not see any big difference in sheen. Your critical eye astounds me.
