Wood Turned Easter Egg

- I have made a segmented wood turned Easter Egg. The patterning for the segments is inspired from looking at Ukrainian eggs. I used 4 wood types: Walnut, Maple, Purple Heart, and Padauk. The egg is 6 inches in diameter and 9 inches long. I turned it on the lathe like a spindle and finished up the last end by holding the egg with a jam chuck.

You sound like David Blane explaining a magic trick. And boy, your work is magical!
+GinjaBreadMan Thanks
I'm from Ukraine. It was nice to see that our traditions inspire people for making beautiful things =)
Hello, I hope you are doing well amongst the tough times going on right now... Cool to see other people who have awesome traditions!
I'm blown away by the size! From the thumbnail in the video I thought it was much smaller.
Also, I'm surprised you've never used a jamb chuck before. I might also recommend a dount chuck, it's super handy!
+Peter Brown I was thinking the same thing about the size.
I also would like to recommend just donuts. Sprinkles optional.
Fellow woodworkers watch each other?
+Michael Gavartin LMAO... gold
Man i thought exactly the same and at first i thought he is gonna simply glue the woods together and when he was starting to glue in the egg form i was like what the hell hes doing now??? Pretty impresive video, the edition is also top!
it came out really amazing! That last chuck you made was an amazing technique! Thanks for sharing!
Love the use of CNC as a "time lapse" mount for your camera, hehe, nice.
One of the qualities I find in your videos is that you seem to be very peaceful in your work. While you insert frenetic fast-forward shots, many of the shots are you slowly and intentionally moving about the tasks of craft. Very refreshing. Often creativity is not found in the frenzy but no the stillness of the shop
So, thanks. There's a peace in your work that is inspirational. :)
I don't even have a genuine interest in shop work like this, but this guys voice is so soothing, and the cinematography is so good that I can't help but watch these videos, and now I find myself watching all these wood turning videos because of him and they help soothe my anxiety and relax me before bed it's amazing
that purple heart is a beautiful example of the species. it's wonderful. I love the gentle contrast between it and the paduke/red heart.
The ribbons coming off that were beautiful! Well done
I think it's really cool to see the progression of your technique and how the projects you make change over time, seeing you say something like "it would be too finicky, with too many little pieces" then fast forward to your world cup ball recently.
That came out really well. Creating the custom end to hold the egg in place was very well thought out
I can’t tell you how cathartic this is for me.
Thank you
I love the way you narrate! Great video format! Great project also, thanks for sharing!
Wow! Makes me want to get a lathe. Not necessarily to make something as fantastic as that, but probably just a basic egg shape. Having a big wooden egg just seems like a fun thing to have!
Outstanding in so many ways! Woordturning, film making, stoytelling, narration... Thank you!
These are seriously the most soothing videos I have ever watched. SO well done!!!!!
+Jessica L. Anne thanks!

I agree. My stress level has just fallen 50+ points.
+Big Mike is talking right??
+Jessica L. Anne when he scrolled down the egg images it felt so choppy
Very nice turning Frank, and it sounds like the start of a great new family tradition.
I like how you tell these stories. You are real genius and artist at same time!
frank! this is amazing, I showers my mom and she demands me make one for her. I explained to her I don't have a lathe, and she said well I will get you one, (I was thinking jackpot) untill she saw the prices!
showed**
+matthew riddle ha ha.
+frank howarth I'm currently looking for one on sale or Craigslist. any ideas?
+matthew riddle penn state makes some cheap multispeed lathes, wont be able to make this, maybe one a little smaller, but you can start by looking there
My mom was shocked when she saw the receipts for my lathe when my dad and I bought it.
You are a woodworking poet! Or a poetic woodworker... your woodworking is like poetry... I just can't get enough!
Frank, great video! The egg turned out wonderfully!
You are an amazing guy Frank. I'd say it is gorgeous but you already know that.
It turned out very beautifully ! This job requires a lot of patience !
it is beautiful Frank great job!
better job! !!!!!!!! frank that egg is a piece off art you are the man
Wow! Hello from Ukraine! Thanks for your awesome videos!
You and the Samurai carpenter are true craftsmen!!!
Frank, I chuckle every time I hear you use the words "keep it simple" even if it is just for a small part of the project… Beautiful job though!
Wow! We watched it twice just to see it again. Really cool.
Absolutely awesome, thanks for sharing. All the best, Jim
9:00 i love watching the ribbons change color as they kinda water-fountain spray out. so pretty
the low contrast combination of paduke, purple heart and walnut looks fantastic
Very nice. Could be a good tradition for your family. Something the kids and grand kids can fight over after you're gone.
Awesome job! Very fun to watch your progress and thought process
Wow look at those colors. Too crazy how many varieties there are in hardwoods.
My goodness, this is beautiful! Glad you got back to it after the kitchen remodel.
+Make Something Thanks David, its amazing what deadlines will do for you.
I love these woodpecker videos
Love the stop-motion X's.
Very Creative and a Beautiful Piece. Any Wood Working Show would be Proud to display that, at least they should !!
Gorgeous, I learn something new every time I watch your videos, Thanks for all you do !!
Frank. Your talents seem endless. What a lovely egg!
These videos are the best
Frank you are amazing... The planning and preparation before you even get near the lathe is daunting. A true artist. The time alone must be worth a million dollars. I hope the family appreciate the trouble you have gone to. Keep them coming
You're an artist Frank. An artist.
Sir, your technical precision is a pleasure to watch!
this dude deserves an award. so creative, and well done. top to bottom a+
I love this project so much that I have watched it about 8 times. I made my husband buy me a lathe based mainly on this segmented egg video. I watched a ton of videos and know tat I'm years away from this but it's my goal.
+Marsha Straub wow don't give up keep at it you'll end up loving it
The detail in the egg is fantastic. Keep up the great work. Derek
Nice Job Frank. Those pysankys bring back a lot of memories. My dad was country doctor (midnight house calls and all) in a small town in Illinois and had immigrants and first generation Americans from all over Europe, England, Ireland Scotland, Germany, Czechoslovakia, Ukraine, Russia, Croatiaa, Ireland, and Italy to name a few. He didn't
Dare I say an Eggcellent video? It also shows that you can learn something new with the friction chuck.
That egg is beautiful.Great video. Thanks for sharing.
Woodworking isn't really my thing, your filmmaking skills however, they're special!
this channel has the most random music and I love it
This egg is out of this world man! Awesome!!!

Another great project Frank! Very creative and beautiful!
Awesome! Now you just have to make about 20 or 30 more by tomorrow and you can have an epic handmade Easter egg hunt.
That is stunning. Well done, Frank.
Frank, wood turning isn't something that I ever see myself doing, but I enjoy watching you. The choices of wood and patterns and matching everything up here is truly artwork. Very beautiful wood, and design!

Excellent. I have followed your techniques in this video and I learned a great deal, I'm a novice woodworker who thanks you for this post and a most enjoyable challenge. I just wish my egg looked as good as yours. Thanks again.
Stunning! I love it! Beautiful work!
Of the 50 + woodworking channel I subscribed too, this is by far the best, at every level. Thanks frank.

That egg bring backs so many memories from when my grandfather was still here. we use to always decorate eggs at easter time as it was part of the Ukraine tradition.
what an EGGcellent design! Thanks for sharing Frank!
Love your stop motion!
That's really gorgeous, Frank! Awesome work as always! I can only imagine how nerve-wracking that last bit was.
Incredible project Frank.
I hate when a project sits for so long that I can remember what direction I was headed with it.
I am looking forward to meeting you in Atlanta this coming weekend.
I've been subscribed for about a year and I have loved all of your videos, Frank, but this is by far the best yet! beautiful

Nice job, didn't realise it was going to be so big but loved it.
Nice job.out of the ordinary. Thanks for the video.
Incredible, Frank!
This is awesome. It is clear that you are great at what you do, but you are also very talented when it comes to making these videos. Things like the stop motions and integrations of fitting music really make them fun to watch.
Frank, thank you so much for putting your creativity, skills, and process on display for us! As a neophyte woodturner (about 2 years in), it's an awesome education for me to see how you think about geometries, and cutting and gluing up this project to get the final result. I'm also really jealous of your workshop! Someday...
+Matt Iannacci thanks, slowly collect tools over time and you will get there.
A big eggsperiment that turned out great. :)
I love your videos, so educational and such great production values too. I especially am fond of the time-lapse tracking shots and the stop-motion animation.
That turned out beautiful, Frank!
Good luck navigating the Atlanta Air port! Beautiful work sir
