    Disclaimer!!
    Never owned a truck
    Never towed.
    But a few thoughts
    .
    1) Well done Mike. Excellent objective analysis.
    I suppose being a Marine, a professional driver (.. and did you say NASA?) would teach you that....
    .
    2) Mirrors: would a pair of Bluetooth cameras on the trailer work?
    One more thing to add in "Tow mode" but easy to do.
    .
    3) Towing range: I'd love to see this in a Wind Tunnel, (one for Mike) there are ladder rack mounting points on the CT.
    Imagine a bolt on/ clip on wind deflector/ "wing", either on the upper set of mounts for a tall trailer, or the lower set for a smaller unit?
    Could be configured to divert either over, or around, with the tonneau still closed.
    Much depends on how much of the range loss is attributable to aero and how much is simply the "physics" of moving extra weight?
    .
    4) Accelerator: There's really nothing wrong with just setting a speed and letting the truck sit there on ("basic") cruise control. You always have instant override using the brake, or accelerator.
    I actually find it keeps me more relaxed, one less task, and I pay more attention to surroundings (no glancing at the speed).
    It doesn't have to be "Autopilot"?
    .
    Looking forward to the next tow test.

      Wow! Thanks for the watch and comment. So in a previous video of mine I mentioned Tesla selling some type of camera system which integrates with their center screen. I think this would help greatly when towing. I can definitely see a 3rd party manufacturing a wind deflector which mounts to the roof racks. Many have commented that range has more to do with drag than weight. I’m planning on doing more tow tests to see if this is true. Lastly I do agree that having the truck in cruise control while towing is fine, heck even using AP is fine as long you are staying alert of the road and your surroundings. Thanks again I appreciate you 🙏🏼

      @DelPhonic1 2 месяца назад +1

      Yes. I use cruise control on my Tesla when towing for sure. It doesn’t slow down when there is stopped traffic quick enough but an easy natural brake tap override keeps distance.
      Rear trailer mounted cameras seem to be the move.

    Just wanted to mention, his complaint about pedal feel is due to the anchor point. Most other trucks the swing point is above the pedal. The CT is anchored at the base. If he would adjust where he holds his foot and have his pressure on the top half of the pedal, his effort level will change. Just a thought.

      EV’s are different to gas vehicles. Their fuelling and way of driving is different. 99% of EV drivers charger their cars, on their driveway, overnight using ultra low cost off peak electricity. Tesla Supercharger network makes long distance journeys possible, but you gotta program in the stops. EV’s are more efficent at 55 mph and less efficent at 75 mph, which is the same as gas, but the refuelling regime is different. Wishing y’all health to enjoy your new Truck! 👍

      And also how the range holds up. Early on in the video the young bloke said he did a trip and did 95 miles with 37% juice left …. And it’s a new truck , that’s just shitful , and it’s still a Tesla with all the usual Tesla foibles .
      And the GVM is not great.

      Regenerative braking is huge in getting the most out of the batteries. In most situations you have some uphill, negative impact on range, and then in turn some downhill, positive impact on range. It helps balance it out which is why I like my tow test route as its a lot of uphill going but you then get the downhill coming back. Pretty balanced

    As one of those you may be referring to about babying the truck... After thinking about towing, I probably wouldn't be hammer down in California or busy traffic places, but I would be when headed to northern Maine with a boxy snowmobile trailer. After all I am heading into the woods to go 85 on a 10 foot wide trail. Mine as well go like hell on the way there, but if I had a camper or boat behind me, I may max out at 5 above. One of my biggest concerns is getting somewhere with enough power to get back to a charger and then charging for an hour with ICE trucks waiting for me.
    People that make these days trips, drop trailer and go, then return at night, load up and head out from very austere locations. Hunting would be another activity.
    Also, if you were going faster than everyone, you could take the mirrors off!

      Traffic makes it impossible to stay at a consistent mph here. I've tried to make videos of me going at 70 or 75 mph and when I go back to my Tessie app to look at the stats it say my average was 56 mph or so. 🤦🏻‍♂️

    Hi, Great review! Thanks, Mike and Butter_EV. I canceled my initial CT order, for the following main reasons: towing range, towing capacity and charging (in)ability with trailer connected. Own a 37ft Keystone Outback 328RL, GWVR 9000lbs., a little heavier than Mikes's Airstream. I am not towing often, but the CT just didn't fit the bill for my trips to Sturgis. If you guys want to do a range test with my trailer, I am happy to accommodate that. I am in the San Diego area. I may change my mind about the CT, as I have a 2nd order standing 😉

    I've towed with a Ram 1500 HEMI v8 and with a Tesla Model X. The Model X was MUCH easier to tow with, I can't imagine how great the CT feels. As for AP etc, I completely disagree. Assuming you're viligent and take over when you're concerned (e.g., busy merge etc) but the rest of the way, letting your brain, body and feet relax makes you a BETTER driver, more alert, less concerned with adjusting speed and distance all the time, etc. Granted, you'd want more distance but Tesla can make it happen. Driving with AP made me a BETTER driver - more aware of the surrounding, less tired on long road trips - and when there's a concern, I take over, easily. Unfortunately, the X did not have AP while towing (only adaptive cruise control) - I wish it did.

      @Butter_EV  2 месяца назад +2

      Thank you for watching and commenting. Oh the CyberTruck is a dream to tow with. In regards to AP, I am not completely against it but I do believe and recommend when towing that you need to keep both hands on the wheel and have your foot ready to brake just in case. I do love AP when on a roadtrip and not towing though.

    • @ranig2848
      @ranig2848 2 месяца назад +1

      @@Butter_EV First, THANK YOU for all the videos. I totally agree that towing you need to be more vigilant, my argument that using AP *CORRECTLY*, with more distance and being ready to intervene actually helps you be more vigilant - noticing more things around you (not just in front) and keeping you more relaxed and less tired (from continuously managing speed and distance) - so overall, improves safety and vigilance. I guess it's very personal and takes getting used to, and most importantly, understand where APs limits are an intervening where it needs help. I guess normal driving AP can be 99% of the driving (esp on highway), while towing it can still be 95%, but probably less than when not towing.

    Nice video. One thing I’m wondering about is power-assisted tow trailers/campers like the Lightship. That thing will have its own battery and power train that works to assist the truck to tow it. I am wondering how this will work, but if it proves itself successful, I can see lots of products using this approach to vastly improve the endurance of EV trucks. That, and it can be used as a power source when you reach your destination, whether for camping, construction, whatever. Look them up. There are good videos about them on RUclips.

    It isn't just about "range" per se, it's about the time that it takes to "refill" that range. I'd be fine with 120 miles of range (assuming of course the number of charging stations was similar to the number of gas stations) IF i could pop in and out in the three minutes it takes to do with my present ice truck. You'll see all those pro ev channels tell you "once you grab a bite to eat, use the restroom, get a coffee to go, etc it isn't that much longer…" and it's BS. On a four hundred mile towing trip my "downtime" to refill is literally three minutes, unless i need a pee so it might extend to five at most. In an ev my downtime without having to unhook is around two to three HOURS.

    • @Butter_EV
      @Butter_EV  2 месяца назад

      You are not wrong. Charging time is a big deal. Now in my experience on a long roadtrip my family and I always stop to eat and use the restroom. That is plenty of time to recharge and get back on the road but if you have to stop multiple times there’s only so much you can eat and pee 😂 Now I will say that once Tesla fine tunes the 4680 batteries and unlocks 350kw charging I think that will change charging times drastically.
