  • In this video I cover where the prices of Subarus are at now and where they are headed. Over the last three years we have seen an increase in car prices. Are we finally going to see the price of a new car come down?
I also share details on which new Subaru models are likely to see the a discount right now and which ones likely won't have a discount anytime soon.

It takes balls to call consumers who flip cars "unethical" given the shady BS that most car dealers subject customers to on a daily basis.

As a Subaru Finance manager since 2006 I would add that a “flipper”also deprives the ultimate buyer of the skill and expertise of the Dealership staff including knowledgable guys like Alex. One of my first experiences delivering a Subaru Impreza was a credit I questioned on the purchase order which read “delete cargo net”! Yes the tightwads in Madison WI who saved up to pay cash, and self funded repairs and maintenance got $45 off the car! I jokingly asked about it and they said they took the grungy stretched out stinky one from their 10 year old trade-in to put in their brand new Impreza. PS they could have made much more on the trade, including the tax difference, if they sold it themselves. Instead they saw later that a colleague bought it from us and then bitched on their SURVEY about how they were cheated!!! Have fun!

Alex great video and economics lesson! If your store participates in the VIP program, you can score points with your buyers by sharing that. This 2023 Forester Premium I just got was my first Subaru that I bought while not working for a Subaru dealer. The VIP through my new employer was an added, unexpected bonus. Had I driven back and forth to Wisconsin, Sommer’s would have given me a great deal, but from Albuquerque???!!! Meantime, my salesman pulled an inbound Forester off the pipeline and it arrived a mile from my home in about a month! Granted I was open to Red, White, Blue or Green, and ended up with Cascade Green Silica, that I have actually gotten several compliments on! Your generous nature will reward you long term in this business, my friend! Keep up the good work and added value you provide!

Just purchased 2024 Outback Limited XT from the local dealer yesterday. Most straightforward car purchase I’ve ever made. Options and colors we wanted. Already in the delivery process, 2 weeks out. MSRP discount, full value on my trade, no fluff.
We’d already looked at Toyota, Honda and Lexus for late model used cars and never had really considered Subaru before but were really tired of the typical BS in today’s market. On our way to Acura, we pulled into Subaru just out of curiosity.
We might not be your normal customer and Subaru isn’t what we had for the last 25 years. But we’re aging and retired. Our needs have changed. We’re not planning to trade again in two or three years. We’re more concerned with safety and cost of ownership. We’re not driving 30k miles per year anymore (we were and more).
It was SO refreshing to find a OEM dealership that was truthful and straightforward in this market and especially in this area (Austin, Texas).

With interest rates continuing to rise (with no end in sight) the current demand bonanza WILL end. Vehicle sales are already slowing over the last few months. As demand falls, so will prices. No one in their right mind should EVER pay a dealer markup, ever. Just search your area and you will find the car you want at MSRP or less. Be patient and don't get desperate. Dealers can smell desperation from a mile away! Buyers need to resist the narrative that these new inflated prices are the new normal. That will only be true if buyers continue to overpay.

People willing to pay whatever it takes to buy exactly what they want, love that so many people won't pay over an arbitrary amount like MSRP. They've been driving their TRD 4Runners and Tacomas, while you've been nursing along your jalopy or some vehicle that nobody (including you) really wants.
Life is short, and paying $1000 or $5000 extra simply is not significant to many people. It also helped to keep dealerships afloat when they were only receiving a few cars per month. You should be sending Thank You notes to people who paid over MSRP, not implying they're stupid or did something wrong.
Last but not least, in many cases, paying over MSRP back when interest rates were extremely low, turned out to be cheaper than paying MSRP at higher interest rates. And that's before considering the MSRP increases it avoided.
If you're financing a car that you actually NEED rather than just WANT, it's smart to grab it while you can.

Being it was the top trim (with the turbo) on a sedan I was able to get it discounted $1,500 under MSRP with no dealer add-ons. It’s simply because it is a sedan. People just prefer SUV nowadays, and apparently many if not all of them desperately consider outback a SUV as well, about which Subaru is very smart - if they didn’t lift the wagon and market it as a SUV, it would be a very very different story.

I am a Subaru fan, but their prices have gotten way too expensive, even in relation to other manufacturers. Hopefully, if supply improves, there will be at least some discount. Would also help if they made the 2.5L engine standard on the Crosstrek and Impreza and added a more powerful engine for the upper Forrester trims. As for supply and demand, other manufacturers seem to have a better supply situation than Subaru. For instance, Mazda CX-30/Mazda 3 have a more powerful engine on lower trim levels, and also are offering a small discount from list. Crosstrek premium with the 2.5L would be a great value, but with the 2.0L, not so much, and to get the 2.5L: requires a top trim which is too expensive.

As for the rest of your reply, obviously, one has to consider price in relation to the direct competition, not what the overall price is. Actually, regarding Subaru, I still say the price of the Crosstrek and Impreza make them a much less good value than they were a few years ago. I bought my Impreza in 2018 for ~ 20K, but at that time, there was very little in that price class that had AWD and the safety/driver assistance features of eyesight. Now the market is loaded with them, and Honda, Toyota, and Mazda have features comparable to eyesight standard.

Now with 67K very reliable, fast, great around town and for the occasional trips. I plan on keeping this SEDAN forever. No need for a SUV in NYC and it still looks showroom new.

I got a 2024 Crosstrek Sport with Option Package 22 and All Weather floormats 2 weeks ago for $1,750 below MSRP without even haggling from Sheehy Subaru in Hagerstown, MD.

Great information. I ordered a 2024 OBW from the factory since my local dealer didn’t have any in the green. I went with the full option package (moon roof, etc) plus mud flaps and hitch. All together the salesman sold it for 1200.00 less than MSRP. Hopefully that was a good deal… thoughts?

On the fence about getting rid of my Tundra that I have pretty much no real use for other than back and forth to work and getting an Outback or Forester. Just wish Forster came with the turbo engine. Hmmm

Anything higher than MSRP is a rip-off & dealership price-gouging. End of story. But, suckers abound.

You realize msrp is more or less a random price set by the manufacturer based on targeted profit margin and an assessment of demand and competition. If they guess wrong and demand is higher, it’s a free market and the dealer charges a premium. Guess too high and you get a “discount” that makes you feel good. They could just set msrp even higher and give everyone discounts, which some brands do, but it’s all a psychological game, nothing more.

Got my 23 legacy sports at Dec 22, 1.5K off msrp. Super happy with it. Only drawback is lacking in sound system, they fixed it on 24 version.

Legacy Premium with the OP 13 (1st, low grade package) is the bargain. I managed ~10% off a loaded Impreza RS trim - roomy, great driving hatch. I cross shopped Mazda and Honda but each had deal breakers - Mazda, cramped (though beautiful) interiors, Honda, notorious Stealerships and plenty of complaints on the 11th gen. Civic.

We bought a 2021 Subaru Outback from Gillman Subaru in San Antonio. I asked about the lawsuits surrounding the windshield breakage in previous year models; they told us everything had been redesigned. We had to replace 4 windshields in the 1st year, and Subaru was charging for 3 hours of calibration time plus glass and install. I will never buy another Subaru!

We bought our 2019 Forester Premium new in November 2018. Think we paid around $26k. Now has over 100,000 miles. No issues. Been very reliable.

local guy here is definitely discounting Outback and WRX and Legacy as well. 2k-ish off advertised on many of those models. Not much on Foresters and CT though.

Great video! I, super love my Subaru, Forrester sport! Great information and yes, no break in student loans. Very sad but we will overcome as we all have a degree and a job, but I feel so bad for those who had to take out much more than I did. I sacrificed better grades by working three jobs at the same time to do it. 😞😩 As a single female, I wish everyone luck to pay their student loans and hopefully there is relief in other ways soon. 😊

my local subbie dealer is loaded with cars and they are not really selling above msrp. when i was there getting my forester serviced they had 4 potential buyers talking to salesmen and from what i overheard from 2 of them they were astounded about the cost of an AWD SUV. about a year ago the dealer was short on cars and prices were inflated. the other dealerships need to get their chit together and pay attention to subaru. even the toyota dealer next to subaru is short on cars and the pricing point is above what it should be.

We have a 2018 Outback, and in the market for another vehicle. Local deal offer $500 off a Outback Wilderness, total was around $44K. So today we bought a Pathfinder for the same price, SL level trim. Just cannot justify that price for another Outback. I guess time will tell.
